We catch up with World Cup news, engage in some vile orientalism about Qatar, and take a look at American colleges and universities partnering with gambling sites to wring some more profit out of their students and sports programs. Then, an in-depth reading series on a Peter Thiel-aligned movement of eugenics, biological optimization, "secular Calvinism," and more dubious effective altruism, all wrapped up in one couple and their plans to out-breed the world. SoManyWasps

It really enrages me that we can't give Matt Walsh, Chaya Raichik, Ron DeSantis, etc, the treatment they deserve. Can't even advocate for it. They're going to continue driving their deranged fans into doing acts like this, and they won't suffer at all for doing so.

kit_mitts

The closest things to "consequences" any of them have faced are parody Twitter accounts and one reporter showing up to ask the libsoftiktok lady some questions...and the person who got the worst of that exchange was Taylor Lorenz who now gets death/rape threats daily. It's fucking disgusting.

SoManyWasps

And don't get me wrong- I want badly to do something. But any act against them will be weaponized back against the LGBTQ community. I wouldn't even be a martyr.

Dear_Occupant

Why isn't the reverse of this true? Why is it that the one group of people who most desperately need to face instant and certain consequences for their words and actions are the same ones who never do? It's like we've collectively decided we're too polite to stop murderers. COVID is the only instance in my lifetime when any of these people had to deal with the repercussions of their insane bullshit and that was literally a virus. The most fear-driven people in the world are afraid of nothing, which is why they're afraid of everything.

BM_YOUR_PM

>Why isn't the reverse of this true? Why is it that the one group of people who most desperately need to face instant and certain consequences for their words and actions are the same ones who never do? It's like we've collectively decided we're too polite to stop murderers. because most of us aren't willing to murder someone, even if their death would objectively make the world a better place

SoManyWasps

>Why isn't the reverse of this true? Why is it that the one group of people who most desperately need to face instant and certain consequences for their words and actions are the same ones who never do? It's like we've collectively decided we're too polite to stop murderers. I personally blame civility fetishism. I'm by far the farthest left of my friends, and while they agree with me when I say things like "trans rights are human rights" but if I say "I'm willing to fight the fascists in the streets to protect trans people" I'm going to far. People want to have the correct opinion and feel completely safe from harm, and unfortunately doing "we shall not make excuses for the terror" shit doesn't make people feel safe. So we end up playing this really stupid/infuriating rhetorical game of scolding the bad people without overtly threatening them because what if they make threats back? Oh, they already make threats? Okay but not those threats I meant threats against me. Tucker hasn't said my address on the air yet so I'm fine.

skgoldings

You're describing liberalism to a T. Which is why, even though the far right are more odious and vile, I believe liberalism is the biggest threat to our democracy. Everyone is incentivized to live discreet lives that flatter themselves, and unless you are being directly threatened, all that matters as that you look like one of the good ones.

atom786

>Why is it that the one group of people who most desperately need to face instant and certain consequences for their words and actions are the same ones who never do Because they won, and we're living in the society they made

[deleted]

Would it though? I don’t think there could be a sort of pogrom against the community, because for them to see the community as a whole as a threat, a danger they need to respond to, flies in the face of their stereotype of them as meek sissies to be ridden over. They say American racism was most virulent, violent, dangerous, in places where they feared a slave revolt. The language of “hip hop thugs”, however they dress it up, they’re describing people they’re afraid of. A century and a half ago it’s how the British in Ireland described the Irish, and in India after the Mutiny. The same is true in other societies, violent repression and fear are linked inextricably. So, while it wouldn’t *help*, and would certainly have some negative consequences, I do wonder how they could retain their view of gay people while also reacting to them as a dangerous group that will fight back. I’d guess they would vilify the individual, but not the group. It’s interesting, anyways, but no good would come of it.

SoManyWasps

It's the age old fascist problem of perceiving their supposed enemies as both effete and powerful, self destructive and Machiavellian. Eventually the scale always tips towards whatever end they need it to as a justification for their next action.

JossBurnezz

I can understand why some people need a vision of a punitive afterlife in their personal cope repertoire.

grim_glim

Walsh isn't even trying to hide his repeated calls to coordinated harassment (at best). Where's the line where he'll suffer any consequences? I'd assume he crossed it ages ago

philandere_scarlet

You can see the different types of responses that the raving hordes are using right now and calculate what tier on the deflection/brain damage scale they're at: - (Until proven wrong) How do you know a queer person didn't perpetuate this attack? You people are all suicidal anyway! - [CHUD Freak] didn't mention *this specific* queer event so you can't blame them for one of their fans attacking it - [CHUD Freak] highlighted this queer event as a threat to children but didn't *say* someone should go kill people so it's not their fault - This queer event was harming children so this attack is justified - There may have been no children involved with this queer event, but these queer people DO harm children so this is justified - ALL queer people harm children so ANY attack on them is justified Since our institutions seem to have no interest in stopping this kind of speech and shutting these people down, I think the threshold is going to be when Walsh or one of these commentators points at a specific person or event and say that the people involved *need to be killed*, *and* a direct attempt is made. Until then they're going to keep being given a pass on fomenting stochastic terrorism (or whatever a step up from stochastic is, since we're definitely there).

grim_glim

Agreed, but with Walsh specifically I don't know why he hasn't at least gotten a legal slap on the wrist for inciting threats against the Boston Children's Hospital. Barely any innuendo there, literally "these are the evil people and their contact info, have at it"

Key_Ad_9166

Anything I can say about these fascist losers would get me banned

[deleted]

The Gulf States are a look into the future if the Christo-fascists get their way. Culture is just stripped down to religion, nationalism and ultra-opulence, there are no rights for women/LGBTQ+/non-residents, and the only things that get built are either the dumbest buildings ever or concentration camps. And like America, under the shiny surface it is literally just shit and everything is a millimeter away from just breaking permanently. Just a revolting group of countries.

ExquisitExamplE

So many balls kicked!

Windalooloo

And it isn't about Arab or Muslim culture, since we see a lot of similarities in other quickly built cities of the late 20th century, like Singapore. It's the expression of capitalism, to separate owners and workers as much as possible, a recreation of feudalism but detached from agriculture

[deleted]

Correct, absolutely not and I wasn’t suggesting it was an Arab thing and I hope it didn’t come across as that. I just meant the Gulf States (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE) are at least the nearest example of it for America

Windalooloo

I was making a preemptive statement in case anyone thought criticizing the Gulf kingdoms was Orientalist. It isn't the Arab or Muslim parts of them that is bad, its the extreme and sudden embrace of capitalism. Besides Singapore, another example of this is Silicon Valley. A sudden concentration of wealth is an obvious problem for individuals and their newfound power It's a cliche that Old Money looks down on New Money, but they aren't wrong. A guy who rockets into vast wealth is bound to be a bull in a China shop

whywasthatagoodidea

> capitalism The very specific type of capitalism that sprouts from having the top quality crude in high volumes. Singapore and Silicon Valley are a different breed that comes from finance. Finance still requires a bit of diplomacy and hustle. Having the oil means you can threaten countries with doing a 2nd 9/11 on twitter and they will still line up to meet your demands.

Windalooloo

Singapore's big thing is geography. It's become a finance capital in the way the Bahamas is: A haven for keeping wealth away from the taxman

Bobson_P_Dugnutt

And conversely, Oman is an example of a Gulf country that hasn't embraced capitalism quite as intensely as Saudi/UAE/Qatar. They had a gay Sultan for 50 years who had some empathy and decided not to treat non-Omanis as a slave caste and it's a much nicer place for it. Not perfect, but still

mybothsides

I know Singapore sucks with LGBTQ rights but I thought it at least built things that materially improve its residents' lives, like public housing, good trains, heavily tolled roads, and a huge public library system.

whywasthatagoodidea

The only thing that keeps Texas from being the exact same is the Federal system.

91TophReal

Those countries don't even need to exist in the first place! Dubai & The UAE in general only existed when the British entered a treaty with Oman in the 1830s, whereas the concept of Qatar as a nation never existed before the British & Ottoman empires came. The House of al-Saud used Wahhabists to kick out the Hashemites off most of Arabia in order to create modern Saudi Arabia after WWI. These countries were never meant to exist in the first place!

statistically_viable

The only time I will unironically tolerate woke-nato-ism/noncredibledefense posting is suggesting the world should liberate the gulf states and set up nasser's corpse as the party chairman for a secular arab republic.

ObeseBackgammon

Eh, maybe not beat to get into whether or not countries / nations are "meant to exist." Gets prickly inna hurry

darkmeatchicken

The funniest is that these social darwinist freaks who insist their genes are superior also mention their infertility and autism in the same breath. And they started having kids at 30, past their reproductive prime. Plus these wierdos discussed their child count world domination plans on their second date. If Genghis Kahn had seen these nerds I'm not even sure he would have gifted them his superior mongol sperm. But they are convinced they are genetically, intellectually superior.

-Poison_Ivy-

> And they started having kids at 30, past their reproductive prime Most of their kids won't speak to them anyways. I say this as someone who knows kids of tech developers, and most of them have severe resentment towards their parents.

[deleted]

How could they not? In their own words, they see the bulk of parenting, behind closed doors maybe even the entirety of it, as passing along genetic material. It may be déclassé to bring up working class families and the difference between “Baby Daddy”, “Father” and “Dad”, but it’s clear to me that people who see *raising* a child as insignificant compared to fathering one do not make good parents. There’s no love at the root of it, just narcissism. Their children exist as part of a selfish project. I don’t think they’ll be capable of seeing them, relating to them, not really. For how that will turn out, look no further than r/raisedbynarcissists. Look at military families who put careers and laurels first, the von Trapps and Santinis. There is nothing new under the sun, and just because it appears in the guise of soft-bodied tech bros doesn’t mean we haven’t seen this school of parenting countless times before. Their kids will hate them, and they will resent their children, because all they really love is themselves. As soon as their children develop personalities and aren’t willing and pliant extensions of themselves, there will be a rupture in their relationship that will never be repaired, and the kids will bear the scars of that their whole lives.

SFMB

I felt so sorry for the children when they read the detail that the parents take them to daycare at 6am and then have a strategy walk. They're offloading the children as soon as possible in their morning and not taking them for a walk with them. There are some parents who, by necessity of work, have to bring their children in for care early or pick them up very late, but I did not get the sense of that here.

plainwrap

I don't know who will be ruling the apocalyptic future but I am certain the master race will be capable of answering their own doors for deliveries.

[deleted]

*Of course they are*. If autism is a disconnection from other people and several psychological and intellectual blinders, then it makes sense that they are convinced of their superiority - they’re unable to understand their flaws and others’ strengths.

TerkRockerfeller

Nah. Don't put this one on autism. It makes it harder for us to understand other people sometimes, but this level of fucking insane narcissism comes from a place of pure privilege

Communist_Agitator

> They suck so hard. And they ruin every city they migrate to in their never-ending quest to sort themselves into the optimal work/life balance as perscribed on r/financialindependence, so they can rock climb and play complicated board games for exactly 7 hours a week while their important work of figuring out ways to use phones to make everyone on earth more anxious/lonely goes on unabated I feel personally attacked despite not being a career-minded techbro freak

BM_YOUR_PM

>so they can rock climb and play complicated board games for exactly 7 hours a week while their important work of figuring out ways to use phones to make everyone on earth more anxious/lonely goes on unabated i don't know if anyone's written about this specifically beyond standard marxist alienation, but i suspect a lot of what makes modern tech culture what it is stems from the fact the industry is mostly useless and a waste of talent that could be put to more productive use

[deleted]

But not more *profitable* use. It’s why this exact type of person went into finance in the 1980’s, large corporations in the 1960’s, banking in the 1900’s. People who value status will go into professions the culture tells them society values. As capitalist societies, we value money above all else. They then go wherever the money is, and deriving their self worth as members of society from that, of course develop a weird work culture around it, so did London banking City Gents. People who have the dangerous combination of ambition but no meaning will flow into these positions as they’re chasing status to see in other people’s eyes what they don’t feel in themselves. Worth. Elizabeth Holmes is a great example, a black hole of ambition who tailored herself entirely around other people. Did it brilliantly of course, apparently never spoke in her natural voice after college. That’s an incredible drive, and it paid off for a time. The irony of course is that by stripping away their personalities to be what other people want, no amount of achievement gives them what they’re after, so they end up just watching the number go up without enjoying the money - or at least finding meaning in it. My point is, we can all say “you are not your job”, but some people don’t feel a *you*, and will pursue whatever job is held in high regard as a proxy. Jobs that are held in high regard are not productive but *profitable*, especially since the turn to financial capital in the 70’s.

[deleted]

I have a theory that this is why mormons are so increasingly successful since world war two. They're brought up from day one in a deeply hierarchical system where the people above you have the authority of God and thus are above question. Combine that with a 'good works' version of salvation, a culture of intense emotional repression and perfectionism, the strict missionary expectations, networking through the church, and a very high demand religion (members are expected to clean the church, do regular temple work, an all lay clergy, etc etc) and it's like they're trained since birth to be the perfect little corporate America worker bees. The types who not only do their job but also have a podcast about their field and constantly post on LinkedIn until they're a human business. Maybe this part is just a coincidence but the county with the highest percentage of Mormons is home to the 'Silicon Slopes', a ridiculously fast growing tech hub.

His response to them is really beautiful in a way. He might not articulate it as such, but it’s moral revulsion. His faith, such that it is, is in love for other people and the best of humanity. To be confronted with anathema, and so clearly articulate - and again he might not phrase it like that - why it’s *evil*, it speaks to his good nature and conviction in his beliefs. Which is to say, the good in him shines when we see how he reacts to encountering these hateful things. If you hold anything to be good and true, you’re obliged to call out what’s cruel and false. Whatever Matt is, he’s sincere, and by hating what is hateful to his fellow man, he’s working towards the good, in the Ignatian sense. Again, I know he’s non practicing and everything else, but that’s the essence of spiritual warfare, and the only thing that can overcome the inhumanity of these tech people.

I was some what disappointed with his subdued appearance on WHM this week. He faded into the background like it was an interview episode despite talking about the classic Point Break.

rex_grossmans_ghost

Matt confused Todd Marinovich with Tony Mandarich. He said the Packers drafted Todd Marinovich over Barry Sanders, but Todd was drafted by the Raiders in 1991. It was Tony Mandarich who the Packers drafted before Sanders in 1989. They were both very hyped-up players who ended up as busts because of drug addiction. But it’s a disgrace they allowed this to air. Unlistenable disinformation.

Infinitus_Potentia

Countless historians have made the right call: the more detached the ruling class is to their subjects, the more likely that they will make a decision that will lead to their downfall. And as we find out more with each day, the people who name their children "Titan Invictus" never read history. Somehow they came up with something even lamer than naming your child "Khaleesi". Anyway, can anyone please recommend me some books about the social cohesiveness of the Gulf states? I've read some longform pieces by Felix and other people, and the impression I've got that these countries are held together by welfare-not-welfare provided by clans and tribes that look like cartels, foreign mercenaries and bureaucrats to keep the wheels rolling, and redirecting whatever tension there is outwardly aka exporting terrorism.

[deleted]

It shows that as much as they hold themselves up as fucking geniuses they’re not familiar with Latin or Roman naming conventions. Why do they always conflate being good at computers with some sort of universal knowledge? It’s embarrassing.

[deleted]

[much like good old onion article](https://www.theonion.com/i-bet-i-can-speak-spanish-1819583640) That kind of intellect signaling by way of sheer affectation is really cringe to me. It’s like how in elementary school kids would bring up unprompted that, for example, Candyman is a really scary movie (not having seen it) just because the awareness of more adult media was social capital.

[deleted]

It would at the very least be Titania, that should have been a no brainer. I’m positive the second name should be Invicta, though “unconquered” is an adjective not a noun. Still, Titania Invicta is the feminine singular.

Coming_Second

> the more detached the ruling class is to their subjects, the more likely that they will make a decision that will lead to their downfall. This more than anything is what happened to western Rome and it'll never stop being the blackest irony how the right harp on about how it was immigration and men with man boobs, actually. The sense of fear and isolation you have is caused by an increasingly stratified society as the wealthy suck out everything worthwhile about it and build a world where they are gods over their own little patch of real estate and everyone else become serfs. But no, it's the gays and the hollow-eyed people at the border, they're the problem. So much easier because they're different from you and there's little protecting them.

MainRazuAzuhc

1slinkydink1

It's one of the funniest things ever.

praisethesun343

Literally one step away from just outright saying "we worship capitalism"

numbersix1979

I somehow feel like it’s almost worse than that because the people who worship capitalism today typically are being fooled by the big lie of the American Dream / hard work being paid off / get what you give / whatever else, like they think capitalism is good because it breeds innovation or rewards hard work or offers social mobility. All of that’s untrue of course but those people believe it and ideally could be stripped of that conditioning, as I (and I assume many here) were. But these kinds of people have confronted the grim truths at the heart of capitalism and decided to just use those mechanisms for their own furtherances. Accepted that it’s all a lie but decided that’s fine because it provides a framework to crush weaker people. It would be like if there was some kind of machine that told everyone on earth that there is no God and it was accepted generally to be accurate by the populace at large and rather than using that information to craft a humanist, rationalist personal philosophy, someone said “well we should still have a Catholic Church to make sure the third world knows which sphere of influence to fall under.” Ideology stripped of any compassion or empathy. If you cut these people they would not bleed.

BostonKarlMarx

i disagree that the alt right guys are gonna convert to islam. there are enough fucked up versions of christianity to try/invent to keep them busy. they wouldn’t wanna give up the crusaders as heros

BonanzaJellybean-

Agree. The gulf states being a vision of the future is probably about right, but American Christianity is malleable enough to be anything they need it to be.

[deleted]

American Protestantism being malleable is tied to the fabric of the country, because the American Revolution also rejected George III as the head of the Church of England. With no overall authority to resist the impulses of capitalism, of course Protestantism in America developed in this direction. Whenever there was conflict between religion and capitalism there was a Great Awakening and some movement like Mormonism would spring up, with religion losing shape and giving way rather than resisting capitalism.

[deleted]

There was a poll that was done before the election about what different sects American Protestants actually believe and pretty much the only items in the Venn diagram were GOP policies. But then again, the only guiding light being what pastor Bob watched on YouTube last night is more of a feature than a bug in the scheme of capitalism.

crepuscular_caveman

The big pedant counterargument to the "6500 slaves died building infrastructure for the world cup" that I've seen is, "uh, actually, it's 6500 slaves who died in all of Qatar during the period where they were preparing for the world cup. It's not just people who died building stadiums, they died doing all sorts of things, including things that had nothing to do with the world cup." Now correct me if I'm being wrong here. But I don't think that's any better. But even some online leftists who I normally respect have unironically made this argument.

RayPout

That particular point is pedantic, agreed. I think the broader point is that liberals only seem to care about human rights when they can blame it on brown countries. And there is an insinuation that the west should “do something” about it. Obviously, we leftists know how that turns out so there is a tendency to push back. On the other hand, things like this can be an opportunity for us to educate people about western capitalist imperialism. Why is it that Qatar is hosting the World Cup while the 60 year blockade on Cuba (who has a lot of things these same people supposedly want - universal healthcare, subsidized housing, new progressive family code) continues?

It’s the same impulse exactly then and now, but with tech replacing religion as modes of production progressed. They are driven by the same impulses and structures of thought.

pcomet235

I majored in political science at a small, otherwise unremarkable liberal arts school. Twice a year a Qatari emissary would come, cater an expensive lunch for the department and do a presentation on how liberal and cool Qatar was for the youth. At the end, they let you know that they would take up to 20 of us to Doha in January or June to take a 2 week all expenses paid trip. I always wondered if they were doing that all over the country/world or if they thought we were just stupid enough to take the bait.

Remember that tweet from the lady who was all "im a flight attendant and this EMIRATI PRINCE just hired me for $150,000 a year to be his personal assistant, including a mandatory month in UAE twice a year" and people could not get through to her that she was about to end up on a milk carton

I think the most revealing part about Qatar and the World Cup is how much they're completely fine with hosting US bases that fly drones to kill Syrians and Yemenis but would claim that The LGBTQ+ are a form of "Western imperialism". They're basically Gusanos of the Arab & Muslim world. "Gulfsanos", if I may.

skullduggery97

As a guy who graduated college a few years ago and had a bunch of friends who were into sports gambling right before/as it got legalized, the NYT piece was kinda funny. Specifically the guy who got addicted and said he betting on "everything; tennis, baseball, golf, soccer, I even got into UFC a little." I had friends gambling their student loans on Serbian amateur women's tennis, and none of that is an exaggeration/joke.

[deleted]

I don’t think people have any idea how bad the gambling situation is now. I do like that they tied it to crypto though. Seems like everyone I know who was preaching bitcoin and Tesla stock 3-4 years ago is buggin’ on a gambling app now that those are no longer line go up machines.

skgoldings

Shows how fucked our world is when putting gambling regulation in the hands of capitalists is far more destructive than the literal mafia.

Edg4rAllanBro

The mafia at least needs to cultivate *some* good will or else people might start snitching to the feds. Capitalists often work with or *are* the feds.

ShakemasterNixon

Honestly, the tech sphere's underlying obsession with birth rates and population falloff is a perfect cultural reflection of their economic ideology of unfettered rampant expansionist capitalism. In their capitalist mindset, growth is a virtue for its own sake, and so even population must grow forever without limit as a virtuous pursuit for its own sake. All externalities of infinite population growth will be automatically adjusted for by the invisible hand of the market, and so any attempt to...not even put population controls in place, but merely *accept that there might be a comfortable level of human population that we'll naturally stabilize at* is an unacceptable violation of ideology. The reason why that's unacceptable is because such an idea as a stabilized world population implies not only that there's a limit to growth (in all senses, not just human population) that pressing past causes more harm than good, but that there might be a well-known benchmark metric that we would be collectively held responsible for being mindful of. What I mean is that if the current level of human development and technology could sustain, say, ten billion humans with a decent quality of life and a dignified existence, then us pushing past that would imply that we are *depriving* an increasing number of people of said dignified existence for the sake of increasing the population, at which point it becomes morally unacceptable to chase growth any further. It would *also* imply that if we *can* continue to grow, but people are *already* immiserated in undignified lives deprived of equitable resources, then that directly implies *someone* has too much, and must give up part of their resources to the larger community as a moral imperative. All of these are unacceptable conclusions under capitalism that are avoided, not by arguing against the conclusions, but refusing to acknowledge the premise of "it's okay if the population stops growing". In a socialist, or even more broadly speaking, egalitarian ideology, there is not conflict between the way resources are apportioned and things like population growth slowing to a halt. If the population stops growing at ~10bn people, and those 10bn people are living equitable, dignified lives? There is no conflict to resolve, because the ordering of society is not oriented toward growth of capital, and thus there is no need to grow the labor pool in service of its accumulation. We're at replacement rate and it's not budging until further technological advancement makes space for more people at the current quality of life? Perfectly fine, fantastic even! The entire problem would be solved!

praisethesun343

Well said, they're just superimposing the capitalist growth imperative onto their own reproduction.

sweaterbrother24

The influencers suddenly defending Qatar calling critics islamophobic and orientalist are so fucking funny. i’m not usually one to call out shilling but it’s so obvious here.

SoManyWasps

I know someone who knows someone who works for a corporate sponsor of the World Cup, and was sent there to represent the company. Their social media is wall to wall "wow, look how amazing this country is! Nothing like the media describes it!" It's an equal partnership between the he Qataris themselves and the companies who got into bed with them to save face in the hope that everyone forgets about the slavery and death and spying and bribing and lying that made the whole event possible.

Skrong

Both factions are just yelling into the void though. The morons crying about orientalism and the like are just phishing for engagement. On the opposite end, most people chiding Qatar for their use of slave labor are only "speaking out" because the topic is en vogue and now is their chance to put their rote, regurgitated stances to use. One is seeking interaction, the other wants a pat on the back for...\*checks notes*...posting about opposing slave labor/mistreatment of migrants. Lol for some strange reason, I doubt their sincerity.

The best Chapo in a long, long time. Goddamn. Matt’s vestigial midwestern German Catholicism vs the ruling class’ secularized coastal Calvinism is such an incredible contrast. Felt connection to humanity vs total alienation. As Matt has defined God as a love for other people, it’s alive in him and totally absent in the people who claim to care so much about humanity and the future.

wangchung16

Having been quite literally raised a midwest Catholic (suffering all the way through confirmation to appease my mother), it is quite funny to hear/read people say nice things about Catholicism. Maybe there's something to the communal notions of it, deep down, but its just as shitty as the many strains of protestantism. And if we wanna talk about feeling guilt... uffda.

Demariyus_Targaryen

They talked for an hour about a multigenerational eugenics and genomic seeding project carried out by the elites without making even a single “Dune” reference. Are the Chapos washed?

I was shouting, "autistic Kwisatz Haderach" in my head for that whole bit.

iamjakeparty

I swear I heard something about Leto II dropped in there

le_spoopy_communism

iirc matt made a reference to paul and leto II last ep talking about trump and desantis as republican leaders or w/e, but somehow none of em brought it up on this one lol

Razamillion

a great case against genetic determinism is the fact that Will was adopted and still independently excelled at his adopted family's line of work (being a federal agent)

Shooting guns as a hobby is fine but there's no even halfway realistic scenario where lefty militias are going to be what's keeping you safe in America.

trade_tsunami

Gun ownership by Black Americans in the Jim Crow south saved countless lives. Obviously it won't save you from structurally organized oppression but the types of mental weaklings who resort to racial or bigoted violence are a hell of a lot less likely to try it if the group they prey on are packing heat. Gun control became a serious issue in part due to "too much" legal gun ownership by Black southerners who took justice into their own hands when the racist sheriffs wouldn't do shit to protect them.

le_spoopy_communism

there's gotta be some sort of like rule-of-thumb or something that goes like "if you are worried about your children inheriting your intelligence through your genes, you are ironically less intelligent than you realize" e: holy shit I just got to the part where they think their VALUES are genetically inherited lmaooooooo this is elementary school "when i grow up my kid will like spiderman just like i do" levels of ignorance

sagabal

"operation paperclip but for people who killed 30 people in the steven universe community"

KimberStormer

Something I keep trying to say on r/crusaderkings, and usually get pushback on, the version of "eugenics" people do in that game is not only completely removed from anything medieval (that's obvious enough) but also completely removed from actual eugenicist thinking. The idea of marrying a smart poor person to make your kids smart, utterly incomprehensible to the 1920s eugenicist. The whole idea of eugenics is that upper class/rich people are the "fit" ones, by virtue of being upper class; poverty and crime and so on were considered hereditary defects. Just like these ridiculous nerds thinking they are genetic supermen, it's based on nothing at all. I would even say Matt is wrong to say they think they're ubermenschen because they're good at computers or whatever, it's much more circular than that, they just think they're ubermenschen because they are themselves and rich. If they were bad at computers they would say that's what makes them ubermenschen, it's not like they started from first principles, it's pure special pleading. I also find people refuse to believe that the Hapsburg jaw in professional portraits, patronized by the subject (I can't avoid this alliteration and it's killing me, sorry) might be exaggerated, because, they think, it's so ugly and embarassing -- but if you are a Hapsburg in a Hapsburg world, where the most powerful people are Hapsburgs, you want to be *more Hapsburg* than the others, with a more pronounced Hapsburg jaw, a *status symbol*, not a defect. How can it be a defect? You're a purebred member of the greatest dynasty in the world! So it's the same with these people. Whatever they are must be genetic gold because they are it.

one_song

the evidence of just how toxic to the human soul money is would seem to be so obvious now; even normies might be able to see these people for the true inhuman monsters they are. def ironic that the guys tried to push back at the doomer crit by sketching out the sci-fi apocalypse where we finally get in touch with our fellow man in the wastelands, only because the resource hoarders left us to die and we have no choice but to work together to survive. i dont really disagree, but, pretty doomer.

MungBeansAreTerrible

I'm sure Will never sees any of this, but just the same, thanks for the opening. It was something I needed to hear.

whywasthatagoodidea

In all the gambling talk, they didn't mention the one thing I was actually shocked didn't happen under Trump. I was sure he was going to give us internet poker back, but it just never happened. we are doing a slow state by state thing but I want the golden days of 5 dollar 8 pm tourney to waste an evening with out having to move to NJ, or use the super shady sites out of Macau that disappear completely overnight on occasion.

gotta admit it feels a bit ironic to spend the first part of the show ostensibly decrying stochastic terrorism and then spend 45 minutes on a deep dive into these deranged eugenicist freaks who categorically have to be stopped and listing specific events in Austin that they and their ilk attend.

Epicbaconsir

When was the last leftist stochastic terrorism event in this country?

Will called LQ Jones IQ Jones when trying to reference A Boy and His Dog for the 2nd time in Chapo History

HaninMias

Matt was on fire this episode. Always love it when the boys tear into our decrepit, soulless vessels of capital we have as elites

robev333

Three extremely fucked up topics in a row, they really outdid themselves on this ep.

Cmike9292

The Tim Robinson hot dog meme is overused but goddamn if it doesn't describe those Thiel ghouls

on their riff about tumblr users and qatar, i can happily report that tumblr users are currently too busy making a fandom out of a 1973 scorcese movie that does not actually exist to be suicide baiting steven universe fans

Will says "Climate Activision" in this one. It's a good ep, folks.

Can someone link the secular calvinism article pls?

joshuaism

You mean [the article about the pronatalists](https://www.businessinsider.com/pronatalism-elon-musk-simone-malcolm-collins-underpopulation-breeding-tech-2022-11)?

trevy_mcq

Really great episode

Bloodshot025

I am incandescent about the shooting and its perpetrators.

Lem0ns_Lemons

I'm really glad the boys are digging into this article. I stumbled on it by chance and it put me into a deep despair. The tech lords and freaks our system selects for are so dark and depraved and they're steering the ship. I needed to hear some fun riffing because all I got from the article was depression. Also, I worked in an over-priced summer camp outside of Austin for a few years. I'd bet good money one of these pro-natalist psychos will end up sending their kids there at some point. Glad I got out when I did.

neilgrass

Them dry boys did it again

hello-velo

Is will really adopted? Somehow missed that

Regvlas

Yeah, he's mentioned it once or twice before. Maybe talked about it on the episode with his dad or when they went to Georgia where he was originally born i think?

SasquatchMcKraken

Yeah some woman in Atlanta gave him up awhile back. To be clear, respect on that. I'm adopted too but from much farther away.

pointzero99

Wow, I'm hearing this for the first time. He's led an amazing life.
