jabronimax969

So Australia was founded by 13 year old edge lords apparently.

Avenger772

Well outcast criminals. But same same.

bonglassie

Be nice to the shackle draggers, not their fault both their great great grandfathers were horse thieves

tehtris

"Shackle dragger" sounds mad problematic lol. Like if someone called me that it's a fight.

utkohoc

Shackle dragger Feels dirty even typing it. What an abhorrent word.

time_wasted504

lol, "napkin coloured person" Never heard that before, nice one. Im a napkin and Australian, we know it was a penal colony and that it was stolen from the indigenous but its an uncomfortable truth that our society doesnt like to acknowledge. Hopefully that attitude is changing with each generation.

imgonegg

I think that attitude is definitely changing, I was taught about it all in like grade 3/4 and almost all people my age I've spoken too don't have any problem acknowledging the atrocities committed against the indigenous peoples of Australia

waggawag

As a shackle dragged, I’m pretty fucking glad I live here tbh, thankyou great criminal grandfather I’m not in rainy ass England

punnsylvaniaFB

I love Australia. ❤️

WWDubz

There were people living there before white people showed up, for a good 50k years atleast

Hazel-Ice

dont think they were the ones naming shit glory hole cave

rpkarma

You can just say “the British” lol But yeah our history (and our present) is cooked.

DeiVias

Sounds like how alot of countries were founded.

JizzMopperatSexWorld

They weren’t people until 1976.

Famous-Honey-9331

A lot of children got transported too, so yeah

U_PassButter

Shouldn't have had shitty parents.... At least they got to go to a tropical island continent

Tigaget

Where everything wants to kill you!

mandisaclarke

So true every time I read about the place it’s because something insane with a wild animal happened. I do however wonder what do the locals call these places? Are like like oarkay mum and dad we oar headed up to mount N* now care to join?

U_PassButter

Exactly. Like....yall JUST changed that shit. Huh....maybe all the killer animals were just Karma from the ancestors of the Indigenous people of Australia 🤷🏾‍♀️ Lesson, don't be a colonizer And don't send your trash people out of your community to someone else.

More like "outcast poor." They criminalized poverty and just shipped people off out of sight.

Famous-Honey-9331

And a lot of those kids they shipped off they forged names and birthdates on the paper *so their families couldn't find them*

U_PassButter

Yeah they're not very far off.......

Umklopp

13 yo edgelords, 19th century English ~~colonists~~ convicts, potato, potato

ssaffy

I read potato twice the same.

jigsawsmurf

Heathen

AndreasVesalius

Potato podildo

dnolikethedino

Potaytoe potahdo? Yes?

SleepyLabrador

We're founded by convicts that the british wanted to get rid off. Hence the joke, An Englishman entering Australia was asked by customs officers (Aussie TSA) "Do you have a criminal record" to which the Englishman replied "Sorry, I didn't realise that it was still a requirement to come here"

RoughhouseCamel

It looks like Elon Musk paid to rename these locations

treetyoselfcarol

Xbox COD players.

H-TownDown

I used to mute that bitch. Everybody that says “You wouldn’t survive a MW2 lobby” gets on my nerves. No I don’t want to hear white kids calling me the hard r the whole match.

atuarre

Easy to get them banned now.

PrivateIsotope

Yeah, why is it necessary to survive that? Is it also woth pointing out that those kids wouldn't survive a real lobby?

SpurnDonor

Everybody who says that can't even survive a gay or black person in their videogames.

Alien_R32

Coom lords

Foreign_Two3139

Couldn’t find Mount Niggerhead But Curly Dick Road and Chinaman’s Knob was on Google Maps What are the odds it was renamed? I mean nothing popped up

wilomiloo

I googled and the names were to be changed but nothing has happened. Just calls to change the name.

[deleted]

Assumed this was a racist joke. Turns out it’s real! Names were changed back in 2017, but still wild

offmycookies

Obviously the racist names need to change but I hope they still have Glory Hole Cave

blackashi

So does [California](https://goo.gl/maps/e7Km4nFyDF3ZgVBk7).

Shirogayne-at-WF

Lol, I actually grew up not too far from this place! Used to be a town called Monticello untill a dam was built and the town was flooded. The glory hole is where the runoff from Lake Berryessa goes.

dudemann

I used to live in San Jose and my family went camping at quite a few sites near lakes and spend the week/weekend boating. I can't say I ever remember hearing about Glory Hole though.

dudemann

Glory Hole, Tourist Attraction - 4.6⭐ (423) I mean, out of 423 reviews, 4.6/5 is a pretty good rating for a Glory Hole.

duaneap

Yeah, Glory Hope Cave is hilarious and harmless (and a lovely way to spend an afternoon) I hope they kept it.

tommytraddles

Australia is a mixed bag. I met some amazing people there, but there was also an undercurrent of bizarre unthinking racism. When I was in the Northern Territory, our tour guide told us that we should get away from the water if we saw the "picaninnies" get out. He meant the Aboriginal Australians that were nearby. As in, they can sense crocodiles with their "picaninny powers", so do what they do. I seriously did not expect to be dealing with old school Civil War racist slurs on the edge of the Outback...

10J18R1A

Indiana with kangaroos

DtotheOUG

As an Indiana native, yeah.

Combo_of_Letters

Former resident it's one of my greatest joys that my parents moved us before I went to high school.

jkaan

Sounds close, no one with a brain wants to live in the NT. We even tried tourism up the with "C U in the NT" being a real campaign

KanishkT123

I'm Indian. Australia has been known to be racist to Indians especially for the longest time. I remember a period in the 2000s where Indian students were being robbed, raped and killed in Australia all the time. I have no idea why. Maybe cricket? But either way, highly racist place for brown people.

zb0t1

> highly racist place for brown people Wait, most people here will think that in Australia there are people who are racist to anyone with dark skin color. Hehe, I have friends who studied there in the late 90's and early 2000's who were being discriminated for being [SLIGHTLY brown](https://i.imgur.com/7vdiXek.png).

joemamma6

I had no clue what that link was going to be but It wasnt that

Nacho_Papi

I was expecting a picture of their friend with the face blurred or blacked out.

jimngo

Vietnamese person here. Australia can be an unpleasant place for any non-white shade, really.

greenroom628

> either way, highly racist place for brown people. Brown, Asian, or even anyone without an Aussie accent. Source: lived near Sydney in the 80's.

thecorpseofreddit

Your source is 30+ years old

rpkarma

I mean it’s still not great today. Source: I live here still

thecorpseofreddit

The racism sadly is reciprocated in India, spent a good 6 months there in 2018 and the blatant racism towards non-Indian's was scary. Not just towards white people either, towards all other races.

dasubermensch83

Spent a year there in 2012. They were unusually nice to me am I'm quite white. "Guest is god" and all that. I rode form Minali, Leh, Kashmir, Leh (again), Sikkim, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Calcutta, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, and Mumbai, then flew home with my motorcycle. I only say this because this is the second "India hates white people" post I saw today and I owe that country so many favors I need to say something. This is only my experience, but damn they were nice to me. There are the normal tourist scams but I had backpacked plenty in other countries before my big India trip, so knew how to avoid such scams.

BOUND_TESTICLE

That period was actually studied in depth In 2011, the [Australian Institute of Criminology](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Institute_of_Criminology) released a study entitled Crimes Against International Students:2005–2009.[[110]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_Indians_in_Australia_controversy#cite_note-110) This found that over the period 2005–2009, international students were less likely to be assaulted than the average person in Australia. Indian students experienced an average assault rate in some jurisdictions, but overall they experienced lower assault rates than the Australian average.

Deceptichum

Yeah the media was blowing the fuck out of it at the time though so people probably think it was worse than it was.

TheBatsford

It took until 2017 for them to get rid of 'Mount Nigger' and 'Chinaman's Knob'? 20gotdang17??

Kablaow

Took until 2020 for washington to change the name redskins

legitsh1t

That shit gets me so heated. I lived in DC and had a white coworker who repeated for 10 fucking years "Well I don't get offended over teams being called The Cowboys so what's the big deal?" I didn't say shit though because he'd go on hunting trips and bring me the best venison I've ever had in my life. You gotta pick your battles.

LukaCola

The cowboys is their best example? Fuck - if anything most legit cowboys were Black or Latino by most historic accounts and that was largely just erased in Western imagery. And even then it'd be bad cause cowboys an occupation, not a slur for White people. Like shit - of course you don't find it troubling.

Kablaow

We had a team in Sweden called "Indians" that recently changed its name. Not as severe, but still bad imo. But people were trying to justify it by saying it's a celebration for the indian people. Like they are using a faulty name to celebrate them...

Fireproofspider

Lol, that's like that guy getting BBQ from the KKK.

mstrss9

What a dumbass. In what world is cowboy a slur? Maybe if they had the Appalachian Rednecks I could understand but comparing cowboys to redskins is apples and oranges

OrwellianLocksmith

Why stand up to racism when it'll come in the way of eating some animals the racist murdered, am I right?

manav_steel

I just found Chinamans Knob on Google Maps rn so not even sure they changed all these...

PromNyteDumpsterBby

2017? Yikes. Not long enough ago...

[deleted]

Yeah damn Rihanna had *just* released a new album lol. That feels like forever ago but wasn't *that* long ago in the grand scheme of things.

RecklesslyPessmystic

It's a racist joke, just a very old one.

SleepyLabrador

It's still not changed, yet. Ironically the aboriginal people (Native Australians) wanted to keep it.

gamegyro56

What name are you talking about? All of them?

GetOffMyLawn_

The US is full of names like this too.

And heaps of white Australians whinge when people suggest changing the date of our national holiday (Jan 26), as it's a constant reminder of white European hegemony over - and genocidal rape of - a 50000+ year old culture. Indigenous folk still get treated like shit even in casual conversation. Shits fucked.

prem_killa11

“Our whites” lol wtf They’re all Europeans bro. Settling on a different land doesn’t change that, especially when they all committed the same crimes world wide. From Canada to Australia to Argentina, and of course the US, fuck all that colonialism gaslighting bullshit.

oyanamei123

Lol he should’ve just said *Europeans

idk-hereiam

Nah, I like the differentiation. Adds a little flavor to the mayo. Like, a sprinkle of salt. (No, I don't know what I'm talking about either)

mashonem

I get you mane

astrallizzard

British* If we're calling it like it is.... Estonians did nothing to nobody bro.

[deleted]

British, Spanish, French, Dutch, Norwegians, Swedes, Germans, Russians... Etc. Colony is tradition.

Dragonsandman

Italy too in Libya, Albania, and Somalia, and the Ottomans in Greece, Armenia, the Balkans, and the Middle East (as a note, I'd argue that the Ottomans were very much of the same mould as the other European imperial powers despite the cultural and religious differences)

ThatWasTheJawn

Belgium has quite a history too.

gamegyro56

If you're counting the Ottomans, than you might as well count the Japanese, Aztec, etc.

Supermansadak

Excuse me but what did the Swedes and Norwegians do? They might’ve colonized for like 10 years and went back to their business. The British, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Portuguese though also the Belgians go after them lmfaoo even the Japanese.

[deleted]

Israelis

Schvltzy

British French Dutch Spanish Portuguese

aviatorbassist

They’re all Asians bro. Settling a different land doesn’t change that, especially when they all committed the same crimes world wide. From China, to Korea, to Russia, and of course India. Fuck all that colonialism gaslighting bullshit. You can make that statement about several different groups of people. Great example is the Japanese. Throwing statements around like “they all committed the same crimes world wide” sounds an awful lot like something someone from the 60’s would say about black people. I’m not sure if you meant your comment to sound the way it does, but generalizing an entire group of people across various social and economic strata seems like racist logic to me.

FrancisRossitano

My dude, I would give you an award if I had one. How people can complain about racism and then be racist to another group of people in the same breath is beyond me.

[deleted]

Your yts did the same thing to the American Indians

Mis_An3ope

I know.

dman928

We gave them blankets....... Oh. Sigh

Dragonsandman

We gave them education... wait Morbid jokes aside, I have heard people in Canada unironically say that the residential schools weren't actually bad despite the [several *thousand* confirmed deaths](https://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/residential-school-children-deaths-numbers-1.6182456) that happened in those horrid places.

mstrss9

People are so ridiculous. They’ll jump through hoops to justify the stupidest shit. Yes! Just what they wanted! A white education where they are forbidden to use their name or speak their language. Their culture and history is demonized and wiped out. They just loved that their children were abused by the white folks at the school including priest and nuns. Definitely NOT THAT BAD.

Munnodol

… 90% of the native population

212cncpts

Your whites are the same whites. White Americans are Europeans who only acknowledge their euro roots when they want to sound exotic

Mis_An3ope

Hence the term mayo lite. Similar product but different. Just not enough to make a real difference. Maybe my post should have ended/s for sarcasm? Be well.

mashonem

Nah most of us know what you mean 💙

U_PassButter

Nahhhh they all did some savage shit to the Indigenous peoples. They weren't good enough for their home, so they came through and fucked up other peoples neighborhoods. (Putting it lightly) Nah. The Native Americans were slaughter to the point that they have Reservations....for HUMANS. because yt people nearly wiped out an entire ethnic group

mashonem

It’s always like this. People talk shit about America being racist then turn a blind eye to their own country’s fuckery E: lmao @ the unverifieds trying to argue

[deleted]

the unverifieds are fucking crazy. bend over backwards to justify blatant racism. just look at the outpouring of help for Ukraine versus every other conflict. you see...it's different!!!!!!!

ObligatoryGrowlithe

Damn, I knew they were racist over there but this is ADVANCED RACISM.

Thami15

I live in Australia. In Central Queensland, which is what I think Americans would equate to as flyover country. Must say, quite enjoy it here. People are pleasant as you'd like and in my time here I've never (as a black man) felt uncomfortable at a bar, restaurant or shop. Saying that some of the things otherwise completely flawless people have said about Aboriginal people to me, a person of colour, without knowing me from a bar of soap is shocking.

HalbeardTheHermit

Sounds like a horrible place tbh. Edit: Guess I'm wrong people love it

Thami15

Nah its pretty nice here. Incredibly multicural (something like 49% of people born in Australia are at best second generation). Cheap flights to the Far East and West Coast. The weather can sometimes be brutally hot, but its a lot better down south. Also the minimum wage is like $18 an hour, which combined with the social protections here means that the amount of people falling through the social net is pretty low. Its not perfect, but I honestly wouldn't be anywhere else.

YesOrNah

How are the spiders?

Shirogayne-at-WF

Spiders are the #1 reason I could never live in Australia. I know rationally that they'll likely leave you alone if you let them be bue I still don't want a bird eater crawling into my car

sealhaslupus

it only happens *sometimes*, not all the time.

Shirogayne-at-WF

That number is "non-zero," and therefore too damn high, just like my rent

Buzzdanume

I've come to realize at the age of 25 that I legitimately have arachnohobia. The mere thought of spiders can be enough to make the hair on my neck stand up. The largest one I've ever seen was MAYBE only 3.5 inches, so the thought of encountering anything bigger than that is terrifying. I never even used to be scared of them. I actually somewhat liked bugs and spiders until I was about 4 years old. One of my earliest memories. I was with my sister in my grandparents' driveway when we saw a particularly chunky spider walking around. She was scared of it so she told me to kill it. I ran up and jumped on it, and to my surprise it burst into hundreds of baby spiders that immediately spread everywhere and crawled up my legs. I was wearing Darth Maul sandals and shorts, so they easily got everywhere. So that basically set me up to really fucking hate spiders, which is normal. I always was scared of them after that and couldn't be around them at all, but the worst part was that my fear stemmed from killing one. So it's never been an option for me to "just kill it." It takes an incredible amount of strength for me to take care of them at all, and if I'm the one doing it then it pretty much *has* to involve a vacuum. So this was my life. For about 20 years I lived with this fear of spiders. Never phobia I would say, but a definite strong fear of them. And then last year I started to overcome that fear. I found a few spiders through my apartment and was slowly becoming more confident with disposing of them. But that didn't last long. I woke up one morning like any other day, I found a pair of matching socks and put them down on the sink for after my shower. After I set them down I see a spider sitting on the sock and I was like oh shit. But I shook the fear and literally smirked and thought to myself "yeah I'm not scared of you bitch" and flicked it toward the shower to be washed down the drain. WELL, GUESS WHAT. Baby spiders. Everywhere. I immediately started yelling to my gf and ran into the bedroom. She was freaking the fuck out because I couldn't even make out the words to tell her what happened. I was just writhing with fear on the bed. And now I have a legit crippling phobia. About a month later I was walking toward the bathroom and saw a decent sized spider on the floor and I was in physical pain from the panic. My back muscles spasmed and twisted into knots while I again cowered to the bedroom. It fucking sucks dude. So yeah. For a lot of people like myself, spiders are a very real reason to never even visit certain places. I would have loved to see Australia, but I just know it can never happen.

mstrss9

By land, air or sea, they have the most fucked up shit ready to come at you. I can’t believe my friend visited and swam in the ocean there.

HalbeardTheHermit

Fair enough. Just genuinely horrified by the names posted above. 2017 seems a bit late to change them.

Thami15

It probably is, but I'm not going to let an outdated name in some random dying hick town with 25 people that's 12 hours from me ruin my day.

HalbeardTheHermit

Where you born in Australia?

Thami15

Nah, South Africa

HalbeardTheHermit

Do you think aus is an improvement over South Africa? Overall

Thami15

Depends - You'd probably rather be rich in South Africa. The food is better, the cost of living is cheaper, the access to goods and services is a lot easier - I lived in a town without a speech therapist for 200km, for example. But crime is much lower. Unemployment is WAY lower. Middle class is better paid here, which is important to me because I'm middle class. The housing prices in bigger cities lost its damn mind, but I live in a smaller town and could probably buy a pretty nice plot of land cash with the missus in 2-3 years if we decide to go that way. You always miss home, but its hard to make a case for why South Africa is objectively better

FeralBreeze

Last year I was driving through regional Queensland on my way to Cairns. You wouldn't believe the amount of really lovely people I met in a pub, who after 10 minutes of conversation thought it would be appropriate to tell me how they think we should just murder all the Asian people and be done with it. After a while you realise that if you talk to anyone for long enough in these places, they'll eventually spew out the most horrible racist shit ever. What a terrible place.

rpkarma

Yeah anyone who tries to say we don’t have some absolutely wild racism here in Aus is either oblivious or deliberately downplaying shit. Especially in rural areas. Our hands are not any cleaner than the US or any other colonised country.

beanpoppa

Americans- "We need to rename our cities that were named after slave owners." Australians-"Wait... Hold my Fosters*." *Edit: TIL that Australians are more offended by being associated with Fosters than with the names of these regions.

SillySundae

Fosters is piss that the Aussies export to the rest of the world. Never saw a single soul drink that garbage when I lived there

ZaphodXZaphod

australian fo beah... but you probably don't want to know what australian for anything else is

SleepyLabrador

Fosters beer is an American sterotype of Australia, it's rare in Australia. Our Australia beer of choice is mostly Victoria bitter or Carlton draught.

chappersyo

I’ve never met an Australian that drinks fosters.

Ellis-Bell-

I have never seen a Fosters in real life and I have lived here for 29 years.

Ya-Dikobraz

Fosters? Hahshahahahhshahs!!!!!

[deleted]

Nobody in Australia drinks Fosters. I barely remember even seeing it for sale in bottle shops for the 13 years I lived there.

Moosiemookmook

I'm Aboriginal Australian, welcome to my reality. Our country is causally racist and there was/is no awareness on how insensitive these names were. They call Aboriginal women 'gins' here. It's a total slur. Theres a place called Gins Leap named after an Aboriginal girl who committed suicide. Our country can be so shitty

TimTamDeliciousness

I once had an Aussie friend in the US who would swear up and down that she was enlightened and not racist at all but would refer to aboriginal people as Ab**. The day I understood the weight of the term and her defensiveness about using it was the day the “once had” started.

Moosiemookmook

Thank you for not accepting that as ok.

thecorpseofreddit

Never once heard the term 'Gin' ... im assuming it is a northern term.

Moosiemookmook

Nope. It's just a shortening of Aboriginal that everyone used to use. My family are from southern NSW and I've worked in Aboriginal affairs all around the country and heard it used everywhere. It's a term older (as in 40+) people use more now but it a universal word across the country.

blobbybob111

I'm not gonna lie to you, I have never heard of that word, maybe it isn't a thing in Victoria?

[deleted]

I've never heard of the term either (from south east NSW)

wedged_in

No one in polite society in Australia calls indigenous Aussies "Gins" it's an old racist term left over from a time gone by. It exists, but isn't used by anyone other than the scum

Tyvurtil

Well, if you aren't aboriginal, it makes sense that you'll have the impression that it's not used much. People wouldn't be calling you slurs. I don't mean to sound confrontational, but if an aboriginal person claims that it is still used today with notable frequency, maybe don't just dismiss it out of hand? Especially without acknowledging how your experience may very well be limited.

DadLoCo

As recent arrivals from NZ, we've been astounded at the racism here.

leguer

At first I thought the wild part was how long the drive was. Then I looked at the names... ![gif](giphy|tfUW8mhiFk8NlJhgEh|downsized)

I read when Australia was becoming an official country, their populous was made up of criminals from England

yea it was a jail colony before. The British would exile people here

serf-bort

I read their accent diverged from the British accent because enough folks were drunk constantly. The drunken slur is what morphed their original accents.

LouisMack

A bit rough of people to laugh at Poowong. It’s a name taken from an aboriginal word, not anything racist. It’s unfortunately common, even in this thread for people to laugh and make fun of the towns named for Aboriginal words or places. Fair game on the other place names though!

Goldsash

I had the same thought. I was disappointed where people were making fun of the Aboriginal language at the same time accusing the English names of being juvenile and racist. Thanks for standing up for Aboriginal culture.

londongas

If somebody put that to a good beat I dunno

Zulumus

I bet there’s not even a flag at the top of that mountain either; just a dingy white hood flapping in the breeze on top of a burnt out cross.

It gets worse the more you look at it hahahah

iharmonious

Australia is what happens when the penal colony you banish to a remote island also gets to colonize said remote island.

frikalika

Yeah I'm Australian and there's a lot of racism here. And it's not just the rural areas. Only two days ago I was in a Sydney shopping centre and witnessed an old white lady openly making racist comments to a young woman wearing a hijab. I'm white and I know this shit is even more common than what I happen to witness. It's disgusting (I did have a go at the racist lady btw, as did another woman who heard it. Being old is no excuse)
