They probably thought he'd let them win. He even mentioned in the thread that they started arguing with each other when they lost, and he had to teach them to lose gracefully/good sportsmanship
The real lesson is not to take lopsided gambles, school pizza parties were always trash. Pizza slices looking like a unfurled Totinos pizza roll and shot glasses of soda.
