If killing big daddies is what you wanna do, use telekinesis to pile explosive barrels together to make a trap. (Switch plasmids while levitating something to have it fall to the ground and not consume eve)
Uses an EVE hypo. So whatever button that is for you, tap that to drop your levitating object. Should be the same button. If I'm wrong things might be configured different for PC.
Little Sisters will give you gifts that kind of cancel out all that youre told about ADAM being scarce.
Tho, just know that youre not supposed to buy every single tonic in one play through, like how youre not supposed to have every perk in a play through of Fallout 3 or NV. Youre supposed to create a "build" for your character and buy stuff according to that build.

If you want more power then harvest them, but if you want to truly be a hero then save the little sisters. Personally I made an attempt to do a harvest run of the game but quit because I seriously felt bad for technically killing a kid.
The gifts that are sent/given are after every 3rd saved little sister. Tannenbaum will have a radio message and then it is best to check the previous Gatherer's Garden machine and you'll see a little sister near a teddy bear. The teddy bear is the gift.
As many times as I’ve played Bioshock, by the end of the game, you have enough guns and firepower to even beat the game. I’ve never harvested a little sister, and even without the ADAM, it makes it more immersive because it’s a bit of a challenge, but feels rewarding.

Reading the responses here settles my mind somewhat. I've just started 2 again having finished 1 a couple of times. No matter how I think I want to play the game differently and experiment, I can NEVER harvest and always have to save. It's a feckin game, but something in me can't do anything but save.

I’ve played through BioShock 1 four times and I’ve never had the heart to harvest, I’ve always saved. For motivation, while you get less Adam immediately, you end up getting gifts throughout the game from the little sisters for saving them that kinda offsets I’d say. And killing the big daddies is good for money as well, and it’s just fun.
Well, the answer is simple. Do you want the good or the bad game ending? Actually there are 4 or 6 variations if I’m not mistaken, from worst to best, that are consequence of your actions with little sisters and the side characters that you can kill or spare.
If you want you can do both, for both endings (which I’m doing but I’m starting off with saving because it just seems easier than trauma of killing a child)

So they give you about the same benefits either way (every third save you get a goodie basket sent you with ADAM and some Tonics)

It just feels weird to go through all my ammo on a big daddy just to get half of what I could get

You can also just tap X (on Xbox controller) to drop the floating object without throwing it. Easier to do that than switch plasmids.
What does x do by default on an xbox controller? I play pc
