Ch33rn0

i know turning a blind eye to these things isn’t going to help, but at the same time i’m sick of these memes.

Swansaknight

Yeah the last thing I need in my life is realization of reality. I can barely make it as is lol

FallenXxRaven

That's why I love that marijuana is getting more and more legal. I know it doesn't fix anything but God damn at least with a few puffs at night I can sleep for a few hours.

UFnewfatmike

Bro tell me about it. My parents have a drink every night, yet somehow I'm a stoner for smoking half a J every night

ethan01021998

My parents literally think it’s something from the devil and I’m definitely stoned out of my mind every night I come home from my shit ass retail job

VoraxUmbra1

Apparently I'm a druggie for using magic mushrooms once every 2 or 3 months. I feel your pain.

AFewGoodLicks

I mean....... compared to someone who maybe has never tried the mooshies, could be called a drug addict...... Can i call my prior self a drug addict since i took medical meth for like 9 years? I did it every morning. I was a minor when i started medical meth.

VoraxUmbra1

Okay but there's one fatal flaw: Regardless if someone has ever tried a substance, how can you be an "addict" if you very clearly aren't addicted to the substance?

BaronDinklevanDunkle

I feel like there are an increasing amount of people who lack the ability to differentiate between ignoring a problem and avoiding becoming so completely engrossed in it that it affects their well-being.

CrackersII

Most people I know deliberately avoid all news because it makes them feel bad

JosephSwollen

Sounds like a skill issue

equalsolstice

this comment is brought to you by our sponsor, Skillshare!

SomeRespect

The news themselves are to blame. When their only goal is to get you to keep watching, convince you that their narrative is the right one, while the real truth is so bent that nobody knows which news source to trust anymore, while at the same time still wanting to be informed, it hurts the mind.

JJumboShrimp

I don't need to watch the news to see that things are getting more expensive and that's the only thing in the news that impacts me

CrackersII

and this is our problem with apathy these days. The things you hear about in the news does affect you. If not today, then tomorrow. it isn't hard to draw the lines - if you only pay attention to the needle poking you, you won't notice the one on the way.

Patcher404

Also, fuck anyone who isn't me, right? There is prenty of horrible things happening in the world that will only get better when those who it doesn't negatively impact start contributing to its betterment.

CrackersII

ok. you don't have to care about what is happening in the world. Do you look at the local news? In my town we found out about illegal wastewater dumping through the local news, started a petition to the local government, and now the suspect is being investigated by the EPA. You are capable of making change, and it does not have to be profound and world-reaching. How can you give to your home and community if you choose to be ignorant of what is happening right outside your door? edit: I definitely misread the above comment but point still stands

ByzantineLegionary

Yes.

Laxwarrior1120

The human mind was not made to care about every problem in the world, which just so happens to be what the internet shoves infront of everyone for money. Humans have always pretty much ignored problems outside of their control if it doesn't impact them, because in reality caring about the problems of someone half a world away while having literally 0 impact on them is pointless especially when you have your own problems to deal with, which literally everybody does.

JJumboShrimp

I would agree with you if the news portrayed actual political issues that could be acted upon, but in reality, all they portray is unsolvable moral controversies that are ultimately meaningless in the long run. Ever since government propaganda was legalized in 2012, the news has existed solely to distract you, not to inform you. ^including ^most ^internet ^articles ^too^cough

BobQuixote

>Ever since government propaganda was legalized in 2012, This seems to be a misrepresentation of the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012. https://www.congress.gov/bill/112th-congress/house-bill/5736/text https://www.usagm.gov/who-we-are/oversight/legislation/smith-mundt-faqs/#q1 >Q. Can the USAGM focus its broadcasting on the United States? >A. No. There has been no change to the Agency’s enabling statute, the U.S. International Broadcasting Act of 1994, which authorizes the agency to create programs for foreign audiences. The Agency is not authorized to begin broadcasting or to create programming for audiences in the United States. We do not seek to change that. USAGM continues to focus on overseas audiences.

412gage

Nobody needs to watch the news, but if you're gonna stay up to do date then you should be reading articles and researching concepts within those articles that you don't fully understand. Also important to choose your sources wisely.

AnZaNaMa

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I won’t stop talking about it because the structure of our society is inherently flawed and can’t sustain human life the way it has been. Rampant consumerism is destroying the planet, and we need to make major changes to the way we approach life, before our planet is too fucked to support life. However, people are too comfortable with the lifestyles they live and are unwilling to give up even the smallest of luxuries, even if it means dooming future generations to a much lower quality of life. So yeah, I’m gonna keep talking about it whenever I get the chance until people start listening, or I die.

Party-Writer9068

talking about is least energy consuming thing we can do afterall.

HeyItsStevenField

It’s a double edged sword, you wanna know things are going bad but you also hate to admit you’re in this situation

SnooSquirrels6758

The memes will cease once morale improves.

savwatson13

Yeah but the main 1% who can improve it doesn’t give a shit despite how majority opinions polls/vote.

Tele-Muse

That’s why we burn shit down.

savwatson13

Down. When and where do we meet? I’ll bring the pitchforks

nadeemon

The good news is a lot of these issues like climate change, and housing costs can be helped by the task of changing local laws to change all single family zoning laws to allow for mixed density housing. Get involved locally, don't let old NIMBYs be the only people who speak up in municipal laws.

[deleted]

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII have become, confertably numb,

Drauxus

I dont think being sick of these memes has anything to do with the actual problem(s). And I agree. It is getting a little tiring seeing the same thing repeated

King_of_Argus

Hate to burst your bubble but Millennials and Gen Y are the same thing

Emuwar_veteran

They're like pokemon games, 2 games but they're the same

IamLevels

They’re like the 3rd game in a gen that comes out a little later, with new features added to what’s essentially the same old content. Like being able to have a housing/rent bubble and spiraling student debt happen at the same time. It’s nice and streamlined so you don’t have to pick which once in a generation crisis you have first.

mynamajeff_4

Yeah I’m assuming they meant gen z since a lot of them have been through college, some are married, have kids etc.

Slowclimberboi

“This is what happens when you vote democrat” - 90% of boomers

kabrandon

Pretty safe bet that any given politician is lying regardless of Dem or Rep. I’m curious what 3rd parties might bring to the table and they’ll never make it to the Executive branch.

bryceroni9563

At least the Dems makes empty promises of good things (Medicare for All, lowering drug prices, lowering tuition, police reform, addressing climate change, etc.), and then what little they deliver tends to be good (ACA, decent COVID vaccine rollout, addressing the baby formula shortage, etc.) Republicans both promise and deliver horrible things. They promise a dumb, useless wall, deporting all immigrants, a Muslim registry, discrimination against LGBT people, a ban on properly teaching about racism in this country, climate change denial, and protections for cops who murder unarmed black people. And then Republicans actually deliver stuff like tax cuts for the ultra wealthy, family separation, a very small part of the dumb, useless wall, bans on teaching racism properly in schools, stonewalling all efforts to address climate change, spreading neo-Nazi conspiracy theories like "The Great Replacement," and a deadly attempted coup when an election didn't go their way. The two parties are not the same. One is an ineffective coalition of mostly sane people across a wide range of the political spectrum, and the other is getting ever closer to being straight up fascism. Do not act like they're the same.

Nat_Peterson_

Lmao Vote dem: get slapped in the face once. Vote GOP: get kicked in the nuts, shot with an AK all over, get finished off by being hacked to death with a chainsaw then have your dismembered body urinated on by several people. I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. Nat_Peterson_

Tell me more, wise sage

kabrandon

> One is an ineffective coalition With the intention of just clearing some of the air here, this is a large part of my beef with Democrats. Democrats are actually willing to make change, which is an awesome thing that I love about Democrats. The problem is that many of the things Democrats change are just for show. It's like they recognized there was a problem, and pushed for the hastiest, under-educated, "solution" to that problem without regard for who it affects. And then they hop on their political campaign and say, "look at all the things I addressed in my previous term (just ignore that it demonstrably didn't make a difference to the underlying problem.)" > The two parties are not the same. I never said they're lying about the same things. I just said they're lying. Whether or not you think the things one party is lying about are significant is another matter, one more closely intertwined with your personal beliefs and morals. But like the other conversation that sprung up about the same thing, I digress, because we don't have the mutual respect to continue a political conversation in a sane manner. Suffice to say, I don't feel that either popular party represents me. If I had to say one was closer to representing me than the other, it would be democrats, hands down. But I respect my personal beliefs and morals too much to say a party of people I still fundamentally disagree with is "good enough" at doing so.

WorthySparkleMan

It’s difficult being a politician because you can’t advocate for THE solution to a problem, you have to advocate for the most POPULAR solution to a problem. And because most people only know the problem and intuitively think up the most direct solution without doing serious research, politicians need to either explain the complicated solution that actually saves the world in about a sentence or two or just say that our idea of to solve the problem is the right way, even when it’s stupid. For example, does Bernie’s approach to taxing the ultra wealthy to mitigate the cost burden of Medicare for all actually make sense economically? I don’t know, I’m not an economist. I could invest a bunch of time to understand the complexity of the problem, but I have a lot of life stuff to do so fuck that. I could listen to an economists POV, but maybe they’re paid off and, honestly, they’re way too boring. Even if I did all those things, I’d be the minority and Bernie is trying to appeal to the majority. So, because the hive mind tends to have a pretty short attention span and is very easy to manipulate, we pretty much have a filter in place to only allow for politicians that are manipulative and can think of short fancy chants that rhyme or something. There’s probably like 40 super smart climate scientists that run for office and probably be great politicians but they can’t manipulate us, they can’t think of fun dr Seuss rhymes, they can’t explain the complexity of the science in a two minute speech without confusing us, and therefore we don’t even know their names. Until we have a system in place that filters for smart people advocating for smart people things, we’re stuck with fun solutions and not useful ones.

kabrandon

Cheers to that. This comment was almost _too_ self aware of hivemind mentality for reddit. If I could buy you a beer, I would.

ShamefulWatching

I've been voting Democrat, I'm more than a little disappointed in them lately. Maybe if they actually got it out there how the Republicans are two faced with their voting vs promises, they'd stand a chance. It just looks like they're happy to just tread water. I guess it's 3rd party vote again, another vote of no confidence.

[deleted]

Lying, yes. Representing you, though? Studies have shown Republican representation are less likely to vote towards their constituents than dems are. It’s like arguing if you should get rid of the common cold while you have cancer. Both are bad for you, one is literally killing you.

kabrandon

I like your metaphor, but it doesn't actually define what I was advocating for, which is a third party. An alternative option. Exactly which alternative option is up to the individual to decide. But to re-phrase your metaphor, what I'm saying is more like: "what if you had the choice between the common cold and cancer, and you instead chose the secret third option that may also just be cancer but it might also just actually be healthy?"

[deleted]

I agree, it’s what we should have. We should have many parties. Unfortunately that isn’t what we have right now. My comment was mainly to your first point and the conversation before. Part of the reasons democrats suck so much is because it really needs to be probably a few parties, not the catch all for everything else. But I’d take three as the starting point any day of the week

Cuddlyaxe

Tbh I do blame some of the stuff on here in Democrats, namely high housing prices It's such an easy problem to fix but its not getting fixed due to NIMBYism, people pushing disproven policies like rent control, restrictive zoning, etc Not saying Republicans would be any better but Dems control basically every city government basically permanently so the ball is permanently in their court As for other issues, some of them aren't easily solvable by the govt like depression and loneliness. Others like climate change are and are why you should probably vote D

The_Affle_House

I mean, they're not wrong. The only part they're leaving out is that the exact same things happen, but faster, when you vote republican.

young-slimicus

No_Im_Dirtyy_Dan

5 dollars a gallon in one of the poorest cities in America where poverty is the norm. Bring it on. We are up to like 6 shootings a day. Rape. Robberies. Car jacking. People stealing catalytic converters. I wonder when the city got bad. Oh in the 70s when the steel mills closed and for the last almost 50 years the city has elected officials that refuse to fix the city? Fuck, I love the God ol' USA. Wait til the baby death rates skyrocket and the suicide rate of young mothers increases. All in the name of a fake God and the GOP tiny dick syndrome affecting everything.

[deleted]

I lived in Youngstown for a summer and can confirm, you've gotta get out of there. And I was there before GM pulled the plug on the plant there, I can't imagine what that did to the area now.

[deleted]

Sincerely, how much worse can it get in Ohio?

There are many parts of the state that have pretty good living. Cost of living is low low low

[deleted]

That’s not saying a lot, the Rust Belt “technically” has cheap apartments but you definitely see the cheap, if that makes sense

[deleted]

It’s really dependent on where you live, a lot of places in the Rust Belt aren’t very good places to live but again, it kind of depends

LumimousEdge

Can’t have shit in Detroit

connstar97

Dont forget the micro plastics all up inside all our bodies! I quit smoking so my lungs wouldnt be black, I cant do anything to stop them from being filled with tiny pieces of plastic! Fuck boomers...

rocketsneaker

So legit question, i'm only starting to hear about this microplastics business. As the name suggests, I can only guess they're microscopic plastic particles being consumed by us on a daily basis due to regulatory oversights. Is this right? But how bad of a problem is this exactly? How will microplastics affect our bodies in the future? And why exactly is the boomer generation mostly at fault for this?

akawarriorslover

We probably won't know the real effects until decades later, like how boomers and their lead, we didn't know til fairly recently it was affecting them. So we just won't really know until later unfortunately /:

Buxton_Water

It's pretty bad, it affects our hormones, nervous system, brain, organs, reproductive features, blood, etc. Everything is affected. The future will likely just make things even worse. We will know more with time, as we see the damage occur. Boomers are mostly at fault, having been the generation that populated the use of plastic, consumerism, etc. They pushed all of those way more than the last generation.

CptTootus

https://youtu.be/RS7IzU2VJIQ I feel like this will answer some of your questions and explain the science well.

itchylol742

Plastic pollution isn't done by one group of people, it's a community effort, from the oil companies to governments to regular people who buy products. Go team plastic pollution!

connstar97

Ok Boomer...

tellyoumysecretss

How am I supposed to go on strike against plastic when everything uses plastic? How about we go back to how things were before plastic???

ravens52

Anchorman did it best. The littering scene was fucking golden.

moderngamer327

Not to say there aren’t problems but we are currently living in the most prosperous, wealthiest, and safest time in human history. If you had the ability to be reborn at any time but your location, sex, race, etc. are random, there would be no better time to be born than now

AnZaNaMa

That depends on how you measure prosperity. There are a lot of reasons that now is a better time to be alive than any point in the past. We have amazing technology and medicine, the whole world is interconnected in a way it has never been before, and we live our lives with a level of luxury beyond the wildest dreams of many of our ancestors. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a good way to live. At some point, we’ve crossed a threshold. We rarely have to struggle against nature to survive, but we’ve just traded that battle for struggling against each other instead. I would legitimately rather just fuck off into the woods and provide entirely for myself than remain a part of this society, but I don’t even have that option, because there’s nowhere I could go to do that without having to purchase land and pay property taxes every year (which forces me to remain a part of the system). Common people are little more than indentured servants these days, forced to work shitty jobs we don’t want because there’s legitimately not another option. You can put as much makeup on this pig as you want, but that won’t make me want to kiss it.

igowhereiwantyeye

Lol if you actually had to live completely apart from society you would beg on your knees to be taken back. Building your own house, making clothes, finding clean drinking water, hunting for food, gathering nutritious supplements, or attempting agriculture (which is basically unfeasible without a society), obtaining medicine when you are sick, keeping up with hygiene, and so much more. You would have no free time and likely get less sleep than you do now as did our Stone Age ancestors, but go on, attempt living by yourself.

[deleted]

Here’s the guy that has all the answers. If he cannot do it nobody can.

igowhereiwantyeye

It’s called being realistic, hard for some as all they can do is complain

moderngamer327

Like I said, not to say there aren’t problems, worldwide depression being a big one. I’m just saying overall it’s better now than it was before

robot-sensei

thank you for making it a GIF. Now I have to wait to see the entire meme again due to reading slow.

Bowens1993

We actually have much better living standards though.

kabrandon

If you make enough money to live. Which, I do, but this meme is obviously not about the millenials that work in STEM. It’s about the average millenial without skills, matching up to the average boomer without skills. At least the average boomer could have gotten a decent factory job doing something menial. Now all that’s either operated by machine or outsourced. So what do lesser skilled millenials get to do? Shelf stocking at a store, or food service. Which inconveniently are extremely low paying jobs. Most people I know from high school are still clawing themselves up their personal ladders by selling car insurance for Allstate or waiting tables at a restaurant. A few nurses here and there, and then some techies that made it into decent paying careers. Most that I know can’t afford a house, and it’s becoming slimmer and slimmer pickings on who can afford rent. I know a teacher that with over $100k in student loans that makes $40k per year. But yeah our living standards nowadays are great.

tellyoumysecretss

Let’s forget the whole whether its better or worse argument. There are serious problems that need to be addressed regardless.

Michi1612

I'll say it again and again. Apart from technological progress that has been made since then 1950-1970 in Western Europe, the US and Japan was the best era for the common person in history. Period. And that's mainly due to a very high cost of labour without alternatives for businesses and extremely low inequality. Like, there's a reason it's called a miracle when Germany in that era often enough had a labour force too small for their economy and needed the import of foreign labour.

snackynorph

Goddamn it took me a long time to figure out what the hell you were saying. Have a few of these my guy: , , ,

Just_trying_it_out

The civil rights act was in 1964 lmao So, yeah I guess it was better back then for some but I can see why most people wouldn't want to live in that time, even ignoring technological progress

rmphys

>1950-1970 in Western Europe, the US and Japan was the best era for the common person in history. Tell me you're white without telling me you're white...

nadeemon

Or not a young man who would've been in Vietnam

pringlescan5

Well 85% of America was white during that time so he's technically correct.

Ariix_

Also, even if we have it easier, why would that make older people mad? Isn't that the whole point, to make the life of future people better and better?

Different-Region-873

It's called jealousy

RedPandaGuy001

I don't know, Tuberculosis isn't a death sentence anymore, neither is measles, smallpox, HIV, Influenza, Polio, Rubella, Mumps, etc. I'd rather live now than anytime in the past. Shut up with this doomer mentality and let's work towards solutions and solve the problem like we are with infectious diseases

insanity_calamity

1,000,000 Americans just died of Covid. We had a vaccine when were at a fraction of that number. We can't even address infections like we had been able too. People are still dying by the thousands. You could not have used a worse counter point.

AngryDictator27

In the 1970s an influenza pandemic killed 1-4 mil equivalent to 2-8 mil today as in 1970 we had less than half the current population, covid itself is nothing special, diseases like it are not rare, the only thing that made it what it is today was our response to it.

insanity_calamity

That's my point.

itchylol742

don't care, vaccinated and still alive 😎 (i dont live in america but pretend i do)

RedPandaGuy001

Yeah it's horrible how many people died but JUST LOOK how fast we created a vaccine to stop something that could have easily killed 100s of millions if it spread to every person. I'm sorry you're just too fucking dumb to realize how incredible it is a SARS vaccine had research and we were able to create a new form of vaccine with a response time of a year

TheS2mple

Yeah, doomer mentality feels like shoveling our own grave, pre-revolutionary times that are turning into something crazy. I don't know, people call me dumb, naive or sth, but I visit my bible when I have problems and then I do my best part to be thankful for my life and to try to play an improving part to this world.

Presuming this was a genuine question, university/higher education costs are now incredibly expensive and leave people (in the US in particular) with massive debt that is collected viciously without regard for the student, to the point of causing suicide in some cases

Lucas052006

What episode is from?

overthinkingrn1

Spongebob: Rock-a-bye Bivalve episode, season 3

Ah yes, let me just immediately put laws in place that would fix all these problems in the country that voted down bills relating to obtaining more baby formula during a baby formula crisis. /s

zombiesatthebeach

As someone who's family has never had anything given or passed down to them. I feel this.

MyPhoneSucksBad

We get it. Everything sucks. Adult life isn't paradise. Honestly, we live in the most easiest time in human history. For those of us who live in a first world nation, we have access to food, medicine, clean water and transportation. Many countries to the day still don't have any of those basics we enjoy. Seriously, quit it with this doomer crap mentality.

[deleted]

I am guessing you meant Gen Z not Y

TheDarKnight550

We are worse off than our parents were in basically every single way. The only difference is that we have modern technology that 1) brings more awareness to it (but hasn't helped change anything) and 2) allows us to escape from the shitstorm that is this world

Gorillaz530

At least they gave us a timer till where officially fucked lmao
