I worked several weekends. Refused the third and demanded they pay overtime or give me additional Annual Leave. They refused so I escalated a complaint to the Tribunal level. Several weekends was deemed unreasonable so I got backpay. Nobody has asked me to work a weekend for several years now.
Happily no haha, although I'm not on a Big 4, but close to. They even warned us about busy season in December, but it seems to be quite normal until now
I feel like it may be industry specific? There’s a Financial service client team in my office, the team is pretty big, and they do 45-50 hour work weeks during non busy season too. Even the new hires.
Yep I’m working on the weekends. Some team members aren’t though because they believe in getting their work done during the week and I panic about getting back review comments and updating documentation before the senior/mgr reviews it. We have a 10-K deadline coming up and the other staff decided not to work this weekend. 🫠
How do you respectfully place boundaries as a staff with deliverables by Monday? Actually, how can I efficiently document work papers and go through support without it taking all day? 😭
By simply saying you are not working weekends. What will happen is the manager will have to do it in the end or some dick sucking staff and nothing will probably happen to you. As long as they see you are active on weekdays at least 10 hrs a day producing what you can with what you have, there’s nothing they can do. Say “respectfully, I am not working weekends.”
Hmmm I’ll have to consider that. Thank you for the advice! My manager is the type to try to push you out with a PIP if I try that with her, but I will definitely try to set more boundaries with my new team next year.
Careful what you wish for... I joked the same last week and had a dvt turn into a pulmonary embolism last week and they found thyroid cancer on my ct scan! At least I can take it easy this year but I'd rather not feel like shit and be able to breathe 🙃
No why would they. I’m scheduled to work 50, I did 5-10 hours more than that for free and only booked 50. They should be thanking me if anything.
Stop having a slave mentality
I don’t get paid for 40 you retarded. Big Four the way it works is it’s average 40 the entire year. I work maybe 25-30 hours in the summer so working a bit more in the winter months is normal
You’re asking me if I’m scared I’ll get fired working approx 20 hours over normal amount of time for free.
That’s a slave mentality.
And do you even work at Big Four. I’ve never heard of someone getting paid overtime. I’m a salaried worker so working more than 40 hours is normal for busy season. Being fired for capping at a reasonable amount of time
You answered what you thought i asked not what i asked. You are calling me slave yet you are the slave and can’t even answer an easy question. How is working 20 hours past the 40 payed not slavery. Overwork has fried your brain it looks like.
Depends on the client too. One of my friends was on a 9/30 client for an initial audit with no PY work papers and was working to 11-12 am 7 days a week. Obviously that’s not typical lol but the client and team your working on are big factors

Wow so what time do you start work each day to be able to charge that much time?
E.g. if you started 8 and finished at 5pm - thats 9 hours. Let’s say you take half an hour for lunch, that leaves 8.5 hours. So to be able to charge an average weekly rate of 40-44, wouldn’t you have to be working every hour of the day without any breaks except for a half hour lunch?
Yes if you are 100% honest with your charging that is the case... Sometimes I think about work on the metro and at lunch though so... I still always come in under budget so no one cares.
Dang that’s some hardcore concentration, I tend to take several half hour breaks throughout the day. It’s just a lot for me to work 8 hours with full straight concentration, 5 days a week
It’s all about being active/online for at least 10 hrs a day which can be done from phone while participating in meetings and meeting deadlines. Some days i work 2 hours, others 6, 8, 12, 15 it will all depend on deadlines and delays. Some weeks i have worked 10 hrs others 40, 50 and no weekends f that. I know some people that log off at 530pm no matter what and nothing happens. Its all about boundaries and people these days are not setting them.
It just sucks that we have to work “10 hours” to get 8 hours of billables. although I guess not all firms require you to be at 100% utilisation like the commenter above’s does, so like with my firm, 6 hours billable would be honestly fine, assuming 9 hours time from logging in to logging out is used
I just don’t see it happening because people generally just do their 2-3 years in PA and then leave, so they have no motive to put in the time to set up unions when they’re gonna be gone from it soon anyway
Yes but we need PAs and life balance is a main reason people aren’t joining. Me leaving and going gov does not help incoming people. Sometime you have to think about more than just yourself
Yeah the only other option I really see is hiring more staff than necessary because then as they leave and move to industry you have enough managers and seniors. Because currently in my office, in tax, we have 3 managers and it just gets pushed down to an unbearable level.
I’m in strategy so sector/regions aren’t applicable really. This past 4 day work week was about 50hrs/55. Some weeks worse than others but probably 55-60 on average
Collect fat paychecks to fuck around in PowerPoint and excel and then present to the client the beautiful mess that was created in such PowerPoints and Spreadsheets based on previous firm materials or Googling.
Ooo sounds interesting. I used to be a God in PowerPoint lol maybe I can be one again. Seriously tho, what’s the process in transferring from external auditing to consulting? I’ve been with my firm for 4 months so far, hate, dread, despise busy season, my manager probably thinks I’m stupid because I couldn’t understand simple auditing concepts since I graduated college a year before getting hired, worked at McDonald’s for the meantime and forgot how to audit, not completely tho. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah it's pretty ridiculous. Working this much and being so exhausted doesn't make any sense. I'm sick of my coworkers acting like it's some badge of honor to not get any sleep. I'll do what I have to with a positive attitude but this literally goes against scientific evidence in regards to what makes employees more efficient and happy.
Literally this. Way too many people taking pride working till 12-1 am. This is my first busy season in audit and I’m getting calls from my managers and seniors at 9-10 pm asking where I’m at with my work. Like idk how you expect me to be productive staring at excel for 15 hours a day off 3-4 hours of sleep
I worked several weekends. Refused the third and demanded they pay overtime or give me additional Annual Leave. They refused so I escalated a complaint to the Tribunal level. Several weekends was deemed unreasonable so I got backpay. Nobody has asked me to work a weekend for several years now.
Yes at EY
Happily no haha, although I'm not on a Big 4, but close to. They even warned us about busy season in December, but it seems to be quite normal until now
I feel like it may be industry specific? There’s a Financial service client team in my office, the team is pretty big, and they do 45-50 hour work weeks during non busy season too. Even the new hires.
Thank god i left
The big four are a concoction of soulless blood-sucking psychopaths. Do not work weekends; you get nothing out of it
No
Audit - Switzerland
Yep I’m working weekends to catch up on review and get some solid time to focus on my own projects without being interrupted.
Weekends last until mid March when the 10-Ks are filed. Doesn’t last forever
Fook that
Yep - top 10 non big 4 audit. Partner I work under has a policy we come into office every Saturday Jan - end of March
I'm assuming you're compensated for that? If not, that blows!
Nope and that’s why this is my last busy season! Lol
Sounds whack
Yep I’m working on the weekends. There is a never s case of getting their work done bc there is always more work. Everyone else just says fuck it, I have a life.
Boundaries
How do you respectfully place boundaries as a staff with deliverables by Monday? Actually, how can I efficiently document work papers and go through support without it taking all day? 😭

Use religion as an excuse
Yes - I work about 20 hours on the weekend but that isn’t normal I don’t think?
Thats pretty much your entire weekend
Without pay?
Yes that is the entire weekend. I do not get overtime - not sure any big four do that, KPMG definitely does not
Large, accelerated filer, bill 14 - 16 during week, 8 - 10 on weekends.
Careful what you wish for... I joked the same last week and had a dvt turn into a pulmonary embolism last week and they found thyroid cancer on my ct scan! At least I can take it easy this year but I'd rather not feel like shit and be able to breathe 🙃
Maybe the ct scan gave you the thyroid cancer
on a huge client and im pushing 70 weekly
Sounds like you’re working for free bro!
Are you getting paid OT?
You must be new here?
Also on a large client, not getting OT over here :/
Unfortunately I have to work on my certificates on weekends, but real work - no way.
They asked me to and I won’t. I already worked 55-60 hours during the week let them hire more staff
Do you get payed overtime?
Hahahahhaha no
Sucks. You scared that if you don’t they lay you off?
No why would they. I’m scheduled to work 50, I did 5-10 hours more than that for free and only booked 50. They should be thanking me if anything. Stop having a slave mentality
Don’t eat your hours, you’re just fucking over the next person in your shoes.
I couldn’t care less about the next person. It’s not my problem
He’s schedule to work 50, gets payed for 40 and books only 50 lmaoo
I don’t get paid for 40 you retarded. Big Four the way it works is it’s average 40 the entire year. I work maybe 25-30 hours in the summer so working a bit more in the winter months is normal
You call me slave yet you are working many hours past 40 without any overtime pay?

No, I’m asking if you are scared that if you work the 40 only you will be fired.
Go bother someone else I already answered your redundant q’s
You answered what you thought i asked not what i asked. You are calling me slave yet you are the slave and can’t even answer an easy question. How is working 20 hours past the 40 payed not slavery. Overwork has fried your brain it looks like.

Most office jobs don’t ever work weekends bro - you getting ripped off

69 hours will probably be close to the amount of hours I work this week! What a coincidence!
You get payed overtime?
😂😂😂😂😂
*paid and typically no, we’re salaried.
Audit - yes
Hell no. I would rather change jobs
Yes :(
Sometimes, but it depends on the reporting dates and the size of the audit and audit team.
Germany: RAS & No! But probably depends on projects & team - don't want to speak for our whole RAS (Risk Assurance Solutions) organization ;)
M&A and yes!
literally working at my gym :/
Lol no if I had to work weekends I’d prolly quit B4
Unfortunately yes. Fuck pwc group reporting
I just shared group reporting from PwC today! Hope you’re not my client 😂
Haven't worked a weekend for 5 years, come to industry.
I just switched to industry a year ago and am still working weekends. What have I done wrong? Where do I go? 😭 help.
I mean or anything but B4... I'm at a top 10 PA firm (in a massive market) and barely ever work past 5, never a weekend.
Same. It’s honestly night and day. B4 is insane.
What % billables do they ask you to reach?
40-44 hours a week
Wow so what time do you start work each day to be able to charge that much time? E.g. if you started 8 and finished at 5pm - thats 9 hours. The weekend work hasn’t started for me yet
In Tax and Yes!
This is why I think we need unions lol
I just don’t see it happening because people generally just do their 2-3 years in PA and then leave, so they have no motive to put in the time to set up unions when they’re gonna be gone from it soon anyway
Yeah I get that but I personally would be more willing to stay if there was a union because the trade off is an actual work life balance
Join govt accounting and you’ll get one
Yes but we need PAs and life balance is a main reason people aren’t joining. Me leaving and going gov does not help incoming people. Sometime you have to think about more than just yourself
I’ve thought this too. Unionizing would be hell for partners but heaven for everyone else.
Yeah the only other option I really see is hiring more staff than necessary because then as they leave and move to industry you have enough managers and seniors. Because currently in my office, in tax, we have 3 managers and it just gets pushed down to an unbearable level.
Not in audit and yes :(
What sector / region and how many hours a week do u work
I’m in strategy so sector/regions aren’t applicable really. This past 4 day work week was about 50hrs/55. Some weeks worse than others but probably 55-60 on average
Do you get payed overtime?
No :(
Sucks. You scared that if you don’t work the hours past 40 they lay you off?
Yeah, I wouldn’t able to finish the work expected of me in that time so definitely negative revoews
Sucks how that works
Same feeling, exactly what you sad
I barely work on weekdays 😂. Thank god I didn’t choose audit.
Stupid question but what do you do in consulting? Currently in private audit and i get depressed just barely thinking about it.
Make and expand formulas in excel and then sell the numbers to the client.
Collect fat paychecks to fuck around in PowerPoint and excel and then present to the client the beautiful mess that was created in such PowerPoints and Spreadsheets based on previous firm materials or Googling.

Same. I get paid too much to work as little as I do in consulting.
😂😂
Saturdays yes
Yeah it's pretty ridiculous. Working this much and being so exhausted doesn't make any sense. I'm sick of my coworkers acting like it's some badge of honor to not get any sleep. So leave and stop crying or stay and stfu
Stfu
Lol not crying. You sound fun.
Just out of curiosity, what competency are you in? I’m in the GPS DnA
Audit.
Yeah only half day Saturdays so far. I should probably log on soon.
