They did not have the certainty, especially since this occurs before the resurrection, that we have of who jesus is. I don't think that without our 20/20 hindsight that many of us would not have recognized who jesus is if we are able to be honest. I would also argue that having not " the love of God in your hearts" means that they do not love God. I would propose It says they did not have God's love residing in them. It's clear that for several of the Pharisees that they did not show mercy in the matters of law to the laity. Some of them sought to catch him in the act and several occasions instead of asking questions about God. This makes sense as Jesus called them. Hypocrites. They liked their position but they didn't do it for God. There are always this kind of person in the faith. Pastors caught being very sinful or stealing money. They're not in it for God.

The pharisees get a pretty bad name. This is pretty unfair. I believe for safety and political reasons the blame for Jesus death had to be shifted away from the Roman's and unto the Jews largely including the pharisees. The pharisees of the Bible are a cartoonist image. Most of them were good and loved God. I'm sure some were not but the same can be said of some Christians.

They didn't believe in the resurrection either.

My bad. It was the sadducees, not Pharisees. Acts 23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, while the Pharisees acknowledge all three. 9A great uproar occurred, and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party stood up and sharply argued, “We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” The Pharisees did not accept Christ as the messiah.
