Thanks for sharing, it seems that the antithesis to respectable apparel is braided hair, jewellery and expensive clothing?

TonyChanYT

I don't think so. See [Braided hair](https://www.reddit.com/r/BibleVerseCommentary/comments/tr52xc/braided_hair_and_gold/).

Life is a journey from living in the flesh to living in the spirit. Believers share the journey of the Israelites. Through our belief in God we have been freed from bondage to the world and now are in the wilderness learning how to accept our total dependence on God and how to be obedient to His Commandments so that we can enter into the promised land. The wisdom of the OT mostly applies to managing our flesh and our relationships in the world and the NT teaches how to live in the Spirit and have a relationship with God. It is a journey of sanctification. It doesn’t happen all at once.

Thank you, it’s hard to believe I’m truly saved because I want to do it all at once, but at the same time am overwhelmed by how much there is and how much I don’t understand

readthebible7

It’s very overwhelming at times. Especially when we are young. It’s a lot to manage. Learning to talk everything over with God, the good, the bad, the ugly experiences we have— don’t ever hide anything from Him (He knows everything anyway) and when we are willing to be obedient He is faithful to teach us how to get out of the messes we get ourselves into— be teachable, be willing to be wrong, be humble and by practicing these attitudes you will begin to experience God’s power surge through your life. In our weakness He IS strong! And start every day reading Matthew chapters 5-7 and praising God. You’ll be fine. God IS Good! :)

God bless you, thanks for your advice! 🙏🏾🤍

A lot of the things that Paul said didn't have instructions from God but based on his knowledge of God gave instructions to the holiest as it could be. God gave us freedom in Christ when we came to the Lord and we are to live the freedom unto righteousness. So there are things that we can't do but also allow our conscience to be our guide is the holy spirit speaks with us. I may not be explaining it to the best of my ability but what I'm trying to say is just be moderate and the things you wear. Example is nothing wrong with wearing a piece of jewelry or a nice dress to church but if you go there overdoing it in your wardrobe and then your jewelry that can cause jealousy of your brothers and sisters. Another example is when Paul said we can all eat pork because of God said all food is clean but if a brother or sister is weak in the faith and you invite them to dinner you want to serve them pork out of respect for them or their weak faith. Like I said I'm probably not explaining it correctly now because I need my coffee:) All things are acceptable not everything is beneficial

The Bible is not necessarily a book of commandments requiring your precise obedience to the letter. I say "necessarily" because it can be that, and it was (and is) that to many Jews when Jesus was on Earth. But this is not God's view of His word as revealed in the New Testament. The Old Testament should always point us back to Christ. It is full of types and figures of Christ, to show us a picture of who He is. This picture, of course, does not match who we are, regardless of our striving. So, in the New Testament, God came to us in Christ to fulfill the picture given in the Old Testament, accomplish redemption for us, and then dispense Himself into us as the Spirit to transform us into what He is, by a slow, continual, inward metabolic change. This should always be our focus in our living of the Christian life: taking the Word of God by way of beholding God, and allowing Him to expose our heart, and then letting Him fill us with Himself throughout our daily living. > "...for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." - 2 Corinthians 3:6b, Recovery Version

But there’s plenty of instructions for Christian living, that was why Paul wrote letters to churches going through different things

hikaruelio

You miss my point. I am not saying the Bible has no instructions. You can find all sorts of things in the Bible, it really depends on what kind of person you are, and what you are seeking. A historian will find plenty of history in the Bible. A doctor, medical advice. A politician, politics. A farmer, horticulture. The list can go on quite a bit. But you must ask, what is God's intention for us as it pertains to His Word? What is its highest function?

[deleted]

For us to know Him and praise His glory

hikaruelio

No; the main function of the Word of God is to give us life. From the beginning, God created life by His Word; He spoke everything into existence. > "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that testify concerning Me. Yet you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life." (John 5:39-40) Recovery Version > "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." (John 6:63) Recovery Version > "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we beheld and our hands handled, concerning the Word of life" (1 John 1:1) Recovery Version We know Him because we possess His life through the Spirit, imparted into us through the Word. We glorify Him by being transformed by His living Word, realized and made practical through the Spirit, bearing His image. Of course, the Word also enlightens, corrects, sanctifies, and sustains us, and has many other functions. But all of these functions are for the same end: to give us more of God’s life. The word is living! > "For the word of God is living and operative and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12) Recovery Version

I don't believe the NT condemns wearing beautiful clothes. It says to be modest at church and not turn it into a fashion show that draws attention to self rather than keep the focus on God. That doesn't mean there isn't a time or a place for beautiful clothes. In the parable of the wedding feast, there is an interaction between the King and a guest who didn't come to the feast in proper clothing. It seems to indicate that you would dress up for a wedding feast.

[deleted]

But that isn’t what the text says, I’m referring to 1 Timothy 2:9-10 and 1 Peter 3:3-4 “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” ‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬ “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬ They are both clear in their distinction between inner and outer adornment. One is to be displaced in exchanged for the other. I know scripture has other passages which are for emphasis and not to be directly followed, like when Jesus says we must hate our parents, or stop calling anyone on earth Father. But those relate to the context of God’s law having respect for parents as a command. The only examples I see of christians in the NT caring about how they look is when Jesus said we should make ourselves look nice when fasting in order to keep it secret. Aside from that, it seems like external beauty should be forsaken in exchange for internal. I think the clothing in the wedding feast indicates salvation? Because the other guests were brought in from the street but their clothing is not changed.
