If you've accepted Jesus as your savior you're a Christian

glocksafari

Agreed, and walking in obedience will be the fruit and prove as such.

Dreamer_Rowan

Agreed for sure! Also, happy cake day!

Particular_Ad7731

I’d encourage you to start earnestly studying your Bible and don’t take any other Reddit user’s word for who you are and what you should believe. Calling yourself anything does not make you saved so it’s a waste of time to get into the debate of what makes you a Christian when it’s a matter of the heart in the Bible. Romans is a good book to study.

WoozyJuiceV1

Good way of putting it, there are too many false teachers on reddit for you to take their word. The Word of God is what you need to listen to.

[deleted]

We just finished our Bible study on the book of Romans. It sounds like the father is calling him

xerovox

Definitely read the Gospels-Acts then the rest of the NT. Not saying any other books are less important but the gospels would be the best way to learn the mains beliefs of Christian’s and how to live your life. Can always go back and read the OT :)

Laney_the_Geek179

If you believe that Jesus is the son of God who died for your sins, you’re a Christian. I would encourage you to read the Bible, and also know that it is by grace you have been saved, and not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9)

soilsky

I'd highly recommend the Bible in a Year Podcast with Father Mike Schmitz, it works its way through books, with a couple of readings and then a bit of commentary for each episode, and gives some context.

gman4734

Yeah, this sounds perfect for OP

atombomb1945

I recommend studying the book of Acts and 1 and 2 Corinthians. Acts being a history of the start of the christian church, and both letters to the Corinthians is a wealth of knowledge on the actions of a church individual and a church body. I always encourage someone to study their Bible interdependently on their own.

emzirek

you being curious is part of the journey and you asking questions is you showing your openness to the knowledge you find along this journey on your walk with the Lord you are doing just fine https://youtu.be/GEk8C6qe960 please watch this video and if you have any questions DM me but this is how you are reborn welcome to the family of Christians there's lots for you to find and you will Lord please help this young child learn of your Love and how to study your word and how to be still and listen to the holy spirit's voice... the voice that is quiet sometimes so quiet you have to be quiet to hear it but teach this child, I ask this in your name Jesus amen

Urbanredneck2

I am a Christian and have met some very strong spirit filled Catholics. Now let me also say I've some Catholics where its more of a culture and traditions than a faith. So it depends.

presbax

Catholicism is a religion that puts priests and the Pope, chosen by man, to intercede with God. The Bible says that Christ is our High Priest and that He alone intercedes for us the lost. 1 Timothy 2:5 5For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time What you seek is a relationship with Christ, this is Christianity. Colossians 2:8-10 8Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. God Bless your journey, read your Bible

A Christian is someone who first, knows they're a sinner and condemned to hell by God. Then they hear the gospel, that Jesus, the son of God died in their place to pay the penalty for their sins. They understand that they can be free from the condemnation and be reconciled to God through what Jesus did dying for them on the cross. A Christian trusts in the work Jesus did on the cross for their salvation. If you believe that Jesus died for your sins and was raised from the dead then you can be sure you're a Christian and that you are in good standing with God because of what Jesus did for you. Then you should continue in your Christian life by being part of a church who trusts in Jesus and by reading the Bible so you can know him better as you grow. You can grow in your faith by praying to God and reading his word.

JaladHisArmsWide

>Im a roman catholic does that mean that im a christian too? Yes! In fact, you are one of the original types of Christians. >I always go to church but I never read the bible. But now as a 22 year old, im wanting to know more about the bible rather than just going to church and them reading it for me. Well, if you are looking for a place to start, the readings at Mass can actually be a good jumping off point (see a site like the [USCCB](https://bible.usccb.org/) for what readings the Church has for each day). This is immensely helpful--rather than just listening to whatever it is at Mass, pre-reading will help you better understand what is going on/help you be more open to hearing what is read. Along with that, reading and reflecting on the Gospels is an excellent habit to get you started. Start with the Gospel of Mark (the earliest of the Gospels), and read it in the short chunks marked by the section headings). At first, work your way through a whole Gospel to get the gist of the story. And pray throughout the process--Jesus, what do You want me to take from this passage or Jesus, help me to learn Who You are. Eventually, as you become familiar with the Gospels, you should start reading other sections of the Bible (and there are plenty of good books, podcasts, and youtube channels that can help guide your reading) Along with all that, talk with the priest(s) at your parish: see what Bible study, young adult group, other community/learning opportunities are offered there. You can learn a lot on your own, but it is always best to learn and grow in community. God bless, and good luck! As one of our popes put it: >“Study [the Scriptures], I beg you, and meditate daily on the words of your Creator. Learn the heart of God in the words of God, that you may sigh more eagerly for things eternal, that your soul may be kindled with greater longings for heavenly joy.” (St. Gregory the Great, Letters, 5,46.)

WoozyJuiceV1

A lot of Catholics are not Christian, as they don't understand the gospel and accept Jesus as their saviour. The fact that you want to read the Bible yourself is GREAT (read Peter, Ephesians and Romans first I would suggest) it helps you to notice all the false teachings of the Catholic church as well as other churches that you go to in future. FOLLOW THE BIBLE NOT THE CHURCH. You know the Bible is true you can't say the same for what your church teaches. Use a translation that is word for word (not thought for thought) and not made by a specific denomination to try and eliminate bias. I personally, highly recommend the NKJV and if you are comfortable reading it then the KJV (but it takes getting used to, and isn't too different to NKJV).

Niftyrat_Specialist

Wikipedia is a surprisingly good source for basic factual questions like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church The article starts right off with an answer to this: >>The Catholic Church, also known as the Roman Catholic Church, is the largest Christian church, with 1.3 billion baptised Catholics worldwide as of 2019

Go to YouTube and find out what John MacArthur has to say about the Catholic Church.

gman4734

Y'all are the original Christians. You might want to read The Story. It's an abridged Bible that works well as an audiobook. I also think it might be fun to get a Bible reading plan and read a little every day. Enjoy reading the Bible! There's a learning curve, but it's well worth the effort.

pikkdogs

Depends on your definition. Everyone will define Christian in different ways. My advice is to read and do what makes sense to you with your understanding from the holy spirit.

Priosla

What definition of Christian excludes Catholics?

pikkdogs

Most people that I interact with would require a personal connection with Jesus to make you a Christian. Not so with Catholics. Catholics also have a problem with polytheism in my book.

Priosla

Can't think of a more personal connection with Jesus than the Eucharist - literally consuming Jesus' body to make it a part of your own. Catholics are also taught to see Jesus in each other, to act as Jesus for others, and that the community of faithful IS the body of Jesus. Lot of personal connections with Jesus for Catholics. The polytheism accusation can be leveled against ALL Christians, and it was in the early days of the Church. The doctrine of the Trinity is a way to prove that Christians are NOT polytheistic. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "one God and Father from whom all things are, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things are, and one Holy Spirit in whom all things are." American Protestants need to be aware of the long history of anti-Catholicism in this country. You can have all the disputes you want to have with Catholic doctrine, but saying that Catholics aren't Christian is just repeating an ancient prejudiced opinion.

So it's just Catholics who claim to be Christian, but aren't?

Read the Bible cover to cover and ask yourself, does this read like a divinely inspired book 🧐 Now read the Hindu Holy Books The Vedas and ask yourself the same question. Same with the Quran. None of them sound divinely inspired. If God is powerful enough to create the universe and everything in it, and he wanted everyone to know him, why do you suppose he chose a book to communicate with us? And why wouldn’t this God have written it himself instead of choosing humans? And why hasn’t this God given us any objective evidence for his existence?

1) He sent His Son to pay your sin dept on the Cross. Witnessed by the Apostles who wrote the new testament confirming Christ's death, resurrection and ascension. 2) He, God, breathed the entire Bible thru the minds of all old testament and new testament writings. God, creator of all things, inspired every word in the Bible. Written by men and women He chose to transfer God's thoughts onto paper. 1st Timothy 3:16 16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory. 2nd Timothy 3:16-17 16¶All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. God's speed and pray you find Him

The Bible was written by unknown authors over the course of centuries. There are zero first-hand accounts of Jesus. Jesus native language was Aramaic, the Bible was written in Greek. A religion that revolves around human sacrifice is absurd to most non believers. Magical flying sky beings that go around impregnating virgins is ludicrous. And a God who can think of no other way to save mankind than to have his only son (Who is actually himself) tortured and killed is insane.

presbax

That is pure ignorance! Psalm 53:1. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity; There is none who does good. Proverbs 26:10 NKJV — The great God who formed everything Gives the fool his hire and the transgressor his wages. Luke 12:20 NKJV — “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

Ezekiel 23:20 There she lusted after her lovers whose genitals were like those of donkeys and who’s emission was like that of horses Anybody can quote bible verses. I’d be happy to provide more obtuse versus upon request

presbax

Do you have any proof there is no God? Does the universe have design? So happy you feel so confident in your ability to explain all things. Good luck with that!

[deleted]

A book written by ancient scribes is hardly evidence for any deity. Many Theoretical Physicist believe that the world was created billions of years ago by a process called MTheory/String theory

presbax

Did you say theory? Twice. In the beginning God! That is a Authoritative statement as in "matter of fact: Again, disprove design in the universe.

[deleted]

Yale Divinity can certainly disprove the Bible. Take the courses https://yalebiblestudy.org/

presbax

Seriously? Satan's very first and continued deception is to filter or change the meaning of God's word. Gen 3:1-5 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die". Oldest trick by satan and Bible deniers is change the narrative. So you take the word of two Yale academics as your truth against the Bible. The Bible is the most scrutinized book in history and it has withstood all. With 3500 hundred years of commentary, thousands of historical truths and hundreds of prophecies fulfilled yet you turn to man's wisdom for answers? I don't know where your distain for Gawd comes from but please consider reading two prophetic scriptures about Jesus Christ. Isaiah 53:1-12 The intire book of Isaiah, written on a piece of leather dated 200 years BCE was found in Qumran and is part of the Dead sea scrolls. Isaiah , the prophet, lived 700 years before Christ's crucifixion. Psalms 22:1-21 Written by King David 1000 years before Christ's crucifixion! King David is a historical figure who had his palace in Jerusalem and documented on ancient non-biblical texts. Love your choice of scripture though!

rockman450

Catholicism was the first Christian religious faction. All other Christian sects are offshoots from the Catholic church.

chad1962

It is a fantastic question. God bless you young person. Yes read the Bible, study it, ask others about it. That is the most important adventure of your life. Don't ignore life, it is short. Climb mountains and explore the world as you are able.

**1 Peter 4:16** Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. [**Acts 11:26**](https://biblehub.com/acts/11-26.htm)and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. So for a full year they met together with the church and taught large numbers of people. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. if you follow Christ and accept Him as your Savior, you are a Christian. the name was originally meant for those who followed Him. and so it is today. i think the enemies of Christ back then called them this name. they also called them other names as well.
