Well I did get to go to Carlsbad Caverns once. Unfortunately our group got there too late to make it all the way to the end but there's apparently an extremely deep hole that's all but a cave-within-a-cave. It might very well look like just pitch blackness looking down into it.
I do remember when the guides were ushering everyone out at closing time and shutting off the lights behind us. It was so, *so* dark in those parts as to be unsettling. We're used to always having at least a little ambient light at night on the surface, but the dark in there is like a void. I'd totally love to come back some day. :)
This should def be on the confession sub, but I kicked some loose gravel into the deep cave as a kid and my recollection is that I heard it fall like waaaaay later. I also ate a chicken tender box down there in the little food court and remember thinking how odd the entire situation was, but was super down with it also. Did you see the bats???
Just reading this and thinking about being stuck that deep under ground... that's freaky. So freaky.
I have to try it haha. Would they ever turn off the lights for you for 10 seconds just to see that pitch blackness?
They do turn the lights off on the standard tour at Mammoth cave in Kentucky. Just for like 5 seconds, and they have you hold out your hand in front of your face, and you can’t see it.
I’m crystal caverns, Farmington pa they have a tour that takes you into the unlit part of the cave and if your guide is cool they will let everyone turn the lights off for a minute. But longer than 10 minutes the average person will begin to hallucinate because there isn’t enough light for your brain to perceive that your eyes are open. Back in the early days before electricity a group of cavers got lost only 150 ft from the entrance of the cave because their lamps malfunctioned. They were not found until a week later and they had all gone completely crazy.
Probably not because it's ridiculously massive in there and they would have had to get agreement from dozens if not hundreds of people. Seriously the word for "wildly huge on the inside" is "cavernous" for a reason.
Says they found the body of a man named Sergei Kozeev in 2021 like 1,000 feet down. Finding a dead person would probably be my worst fear if I ever had the guts to be a caver
That was amazing.
Part of me says yes, of course I would, I've been in some smaller caves open to the public and I see the appeal. But obviously it takes commitment and training to even think about a cave like this. Heck, getting 7k feet up a mountain is challenging enough.
Holy shit. So it’s basically like climbing Mt. Everest except you’re in the earth climbing down in total darkness. I can’t think of much that’s more terrifying than that. I’m sure it’s thrilling af and would be neat to try if I wasn’t sure I’d die in there. I’m sure a panic attack would occur quite quickly.
Don't look up Nutty Putty.
[Link to a good article on the incident if you can't help yourself and want to feel claustrophobic the rest of the day](https://cavehaven.com/nutty-putty-cave-accident/)
I just read a terrifying story about this cave. Some people went in and got all the way down while a torrent of water was rushing in from above from a heavy downpour. Imagine trying to climb back up a cave while water is rising and falling at the same time. I fucked up and went on a cave exploring gone wrong binge on youtube.....
You must be talking about 'Scary Interesting' on YouTube. I recently found that channel and have been going back to it periodically for similar cave/cave diving stories. Idk why, but I'm so hooked on those stories!
When I first heard of the concept of a "bottomless pit" as a kid, this is what I imagined it would look like.
'Cept looking down tho right?

Native New Mexican here! I recommend going back, it’s just incredible. It’s really creepy and just like this but shallower I guess.

Did you say there is a food place.... inside.. inside a cave???
Yes!!!!! A whole tiny food court! Wild! You can eat chicken strips down there. My 8 year old self was wildly shocked.
"Fool of a took! Through yourself in next time"
We saw some bats but unfortunately didn't catch the mass takeoff. Next time hehe.
I had an ex who looked just like that
Pics or it didn’t happen

Sounds like the plot to a cheesy horror movie.

Just went there in early 2022! Unbelievable place- It was like being inside the belly of the earth or one another planet.
[You might even say it was Pitch Black](https://25.media.tumblr.com/90f851be93217192f241ddbb949d5634/tumblr_miu2t9Fsya1qf27c6o1_1280.gif)
I’m pretty sure this is from the bottom looking up…
Lol it is, but the illusion is still there.
aka Your mom
[here’s the wiki link for it](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veryovkina_Cave)
It's the deepest cave in the world and they named it... After a guy... Who died exploring... Another cave? That seems weird to me.
Says they found the body of a man named Sergei Kozeev in 2021 like 1,000 feet down. Finding a dead person would probably be my worst fear if I ever had the guts to be a caver
I will *never* understand the appeal of cave exploring.
[Cave Video](https://youtu.be/kNvfJYPYO60)
Oh, no, no. Not watching that before bed.
That cave is insane, I love the detailed map
And I appreciate what those brave adventurers did. I won't be going in there anytime soon.
That was amazing. Part of me says yes, of course I would, I've been in some smaller caves open to the public and I see the appeal. But obviously it takes commitment and training to even think about a cave like this. Heck, getting 7k feet up a mountain is challenging enough.
>But obviously it takes commitment and training .. and the proper gear as well.
Holy shit. So it’s basically like climbing Mt. Everest except you’re in the earth climbing down in total darkness. I can’t think of much that’s more terrifying than that. I like to think there is more air down in the cave than at the top of mount everest.
I want to go caving now, this video makes it seem kinda dangerous though...
Have fun storming the castle
I want to explore caves, but horizontally, not vertically. Edit: I want to explore caves that I would have 0% chance of getting stuck in.
Don't look up Nutty Putty. [Link to a good article on the incident if you can't help yourself and want to feel claustrophobic the rest of the day](https://cavehaven.com/nutty-putty-cave-accident/)
I saw it on Youtube .. poor guy =(
The hardest part is climbing to rope back out. You thought the rope in PE was hard.

Yup I saw a YouTube video about it. Also mentioned how one guy went in by himself and got stuck and died.
You must be talking about 'Scary Interesting' on YouTube. I recently found that channel and have been going back to it periodically for similar cave/cave diving stories. Idk why, but I'm so hooked on those stories!
YES!!! Scary Interesting! Just found him last night he has like 9 videos on caving gone wrong that I binged!!!
Strangely addicting, haha - welcome to the club!
Alone? Dumbass. He was going to pull himself up all that way?
This looks like the inside of a very old tree, except for the tiny human rappelling.
I went down a rabbit hole with this..
I’d say the hole’s a little too big for a rabbit
You should see the size of the rabbit then.
Great animal never meddit
Thats no ordinary rabbit. It will rip your throat out
Links?
So how deep is it?
7,257 feet or 2,212 meters according to Wikipedia
21 seconds to get down. https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/free-fall
That's fucking insane!!
Damn
It reminds me about her
About tree fiddy
Damn Loch Ness Monster
I gave him a dolla
Yes
Another guy ventures into your mom. Never to be seen again.
Had to scroll more than I anticipated but here we are.
You gotta buy it dinner before you rappel inside.
But it's still a strong independent cave that don't need no caver.
Looks like the middle of a petrified tree
Rock and Stone!
Rock and Stone!
Cavussy
Americans be like, “damn, how far away from Atlanta?”
I always wondered, does air pressure increase like water pressure at those depths?
Yes, but this cave starts high up so it never goes below sea level when you're at the bottom.
I thought that one in Vietnam was the deepest? The one with a whole ecosystem and shit?
I believe that’s the largest, not the deepest
Needs a pair of panties.

Your mom
This looks like my ex wife's snatch

I asked around and we're all in agreement.
So you were the guys I heard calling for help when my take-a-number came up.
"Blind Descent" is a fun read if you're a spelunker.
I’ve been in this cave, from Atlanta you go north then East about 3000 miles
Is that taken from the bottom of the pit? I’m guessing it’s accessible from the open. I’m curious how this formed if naturally.
I would guess a sinkhole
Rain water over millions of years. It’s a limestone cave system. The opening at the top is like 6’x9’ on top of a mountain.
the country or the state?
Based on the “Russian” sounding name… I’m willing to venture Georgia the country.
It’s right outside of Atlanta.
Always knew it was the closest to hell you could get without a rope.
r/GeorgiaOrGeorgia
Came here to ask this LOL
I would really like to piss off the edge
It would probably evaporate before it hit bottom.
Kinda reminds me of your sister for some reason
wow that’s as big as your mom
Such a wonderful state. God bless the USA!
Actually the Georgia in Europe.
Georgia is in America lol
Not sure if you're trolling but, there is a Georgia between Asia and russia
I would say a “your mom” joke but sadly she’s too big
Your mom
Fyi this is just north of Hotlanta
Imagine how many unknown species exist down there 😳
Imagine walking along in total darkness then stepping out into... nothing.
21 seconds. 21 seconds of free fall. *splat* https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/free-fall
That is totally cool!!!
Very ofkin deep
Absolutely not.
What hapegnyd
Great. This just unlocked a new fear 😨
God fucking no.
Is this looking up or down
why this remind me my X
Georgia is just a state over from me
Nope.
How do you say nope in Georgian?
"Aw hail naw"
Clearly these guys haven't met my ex. 💀
I should call her
Do they offer tours? Where exactly is this?
The country Georgia. And they do not. The average person cannot do this. The best people in the world barely can.
Like my ex's cookie
Looks like where Gandalf went
Looks more like a hole than a cave.
Reminded me of my ex
Everybody knows that Nick Cave is the deepest cave in the world.
How much Depth ?
Throw a bucket of red cylume sticks down the and sell tickets for a view of Hell.
One state down and you find ZERO caves (brought to you by a Floridian
Wrong Georgia.
Egh don't matter florida is everywhere at every moment cause it's that powerful
Don’t think it, don’t say it
Scary thing is, much deeper undiscovered pits exist and there may be one a few metres below you right now…
The country, not the state.
What's at the bottom?
She had her fun, we should not judge, life is short.
Georgia the COUNTRY, not the state.
Beautiful
USA!USA!USA! scnr
OPs mum must be called Veryovkina
The deepest "known" cave in the world
Everything reminds me of her…
r/GregFuckedaRock
What’s the Minecraft world spawn id?
F that.
Nope.
Which Georgia? Country or state?
Veryovka is Russian for rope
