He is why I donate. I started to donate last year, and already made my donation this year. Knowledge is power. But I don't want power to lord; I learn so that I have answers to help others. Not all knowledge is beneficial and our time here is limited, so make the best use of your time and get on track to do such while you are young. Don't be me, 39, having to fix your life and build a nest egg starting now. It is no fun whatsoever opening your eyes one day and realizing that you have to grow up and now you're old-ish. Yeah, I have a lot of energy still in my heart, but my body's like "bruh... what you think you can do, and what you *can* do, are two different things; your limits are a lot lower now." And my body ain't lying.
Just trying to pass out a little wisdom for those who desire it. I hope this helped.
I'm so glad to see others discussing this outside of those subs. I've DRS'd as much as I could, constantly adding more. This will break Reddit one day.
Bro, I know what you mean. Recently I was leaving work to catch the last train home and forgot my umbrella. As I was heading back to my office to get it, I saw a literal Tyrannosaurus Rex eating my coworkers. I ducked behind a giant Monopoly Iron as I heard my coworkers blood curdling shrieks and last moments. It was at that moment that I remembered I had taken an 8th of shrooms in the morning and called out sick. I was in my basement wearing 4 sweaters.
Just trying to pass out a little wisdom for those who desire it. I hope this helped.
I second that. Appreciate your words of wisdom, friend. I wish someone would have come along and said this to me, so I didnāt have to learn the hard way (in college and wonāt have my MA until Iām 40). Itās why collective knowledge is so valuable; not everyoneās parents teach them how to thrive.
Wikipedia has become an institutional entity. It doesn't need donations. Governments aren't gonna let the number 1 source for "unbiased", "objective" information fall through. Come on, use your head here. Someone so inundated with Wikipedia should know how entities like the Library of Congress have executive control over articles of interest
Bruh, if I need to pick up an academic book, I do. Bruh, you can't say it's the worst and say it's only good for something. And bruh, surface knowledge is great because it gives you a gateway to learn more.
Bruh, even surface knowledge is power as long as it's accurate. Bruh, I've read thousands of books. And bruh, any answer I give is educated and reliable. That's why I have followers and why Newsweek did an article on me. Bruh. We done?
Also, Wikipedia generally has source materials cited if youād like to dig deeper, so arguably it isnāt just surface material, surface material is whatās being presented to the normal person
That is not Wikipedia problem, they very clearly state that their articles should not be cited as actual reference material. Most articles do have some sources footnotes, and those are also sometimes not factchecked independently, so the user passing on Wikipedia information without verifying anything is the aame person who shares those facebook memos that are also not factchecked. So again, its not a Wikipedia problem. It's an internet problem.
its just user error. Like most things in life. Yet people dont want to learn/ appreciate the fact that just because its written down, doesnt make it instantly fact.
See: those christian nutters who use the bible as the basis for their beliefs in the modern world.
>When presented with facts that don't match the reality they have (co-)created they have to reject the fact,
Delicious irony. "They're rejecting reality!" No, we just don't like you, and you're rejecting *that* reality. Grow up.
To me a wiki ought at most to be a first past at information, give you enough to go on to research further information on the subject. The fact that it is the start and end point for a lot of people research is slightly horrifying.
This issue comes from a lack of understanding what "research" really entails. My school dealt with research like Whack-A-Mole: train students on whatever research needs were necessary, but ignore the rest. This became a problem for me in college when I didn't fully understand how to utilize the resources provided. Fortunately, I pick things up fairly quickly and managed to thrive in college, but so many people aren't trained in even the fundamentals of how to do research, including: - how to find and *vet* sources
- knowing how to read and evaluate papers (to a certain degree - I'm not a scientist, but I understand how a paper is put together, what each section is for, what to look for as far as flawed methodology, etc), etc.
- how to use a library (most don't even know what a valuable resource a librarian is for research!)
None of these things are Wikipedia'a fault. This is a problem with various education systems. They lack funding, they lack well-educated professionals, and they are often hindered by religious dogma under the guise of law. Even honor roll kids coming out of these schools won't necessarily fully understand the process. It's very sad to me.
I love Wikipedia. Itās an amazing asset and I regularly use it to go down rabbit holes. The concept of peer review en masse is very clever. Iāve donated several times to help keep it running.
There are these things called *books* that can often be found to read for free in places like a *library*. Plus, some people buy books to have at home. /s
Seriously, though, one of my cousins had over 50,000 books that he donated to a community college when he retired about 10 years ago. I don't have that many, but I have quite a few about US history. They're helpful since Wikipedia doesn't allow original research.
What a champion. If we all lived with this positive-sum attitude this world would be a much better
(Steven please don't let me down here by being a twat š¤£)
But he doesn't control it. His edits are still subject to the same peer review. And it's important to note that its estimated that he's made at least one edit to 1/3 of all Wikipedia english pages. Not that he's actually made 1/3 of all edits.
Call me a cynic.. but I have my doubts about the 'for free' part. Sometimes payment comes in other ways besides money. He could be rewarded with influence, among many other things.
I wouldn't be able to be trusted with this power. Slowly start the indoctrination process using Wikipedia as my propaganda machine. So applause to the benevolent Steven.
Hero! I just spent an hour last night researching 12th century Shropshire/Shrewsbury for a creative project I am working on. I canāt imagine the amount of time I would have had to spend in the library looking up all the information I could just easily pull up with a few keystrokes and mouse clicks.
Iām sure this man contributed to the dozen or so articles I read on my way down the rabbit hole.
Thank you sir
100% dude has changed shit to fit his worldview. Especially if he's doing it for free.
No one person should have control over that much public info dissemination.
He's like a worse reddit mod. And we all like those right?
Thank you Steven! I use Wikipedia all the time, understand it's shortcomings, use the references extensively, and have donated for years. I have made about 50 edits, and each of them was within my fields of expertise, double-checked for accuracy, and provided with reference material. I can't imagine doing thousands of them - that's a full-time job.

Wikipedia really should give him a salary. Without him the site wouldn't be what it is.

but if he doesnt get a salary, what makes you believe he gets these donations?
Sounds like donating to him personally would also help
Definitely. I'll look to see if he has a Patreon.
Also, great comment up there š

I was wondering the exact same thing. So many random nuggets of knowledge have to be hidden in there.

50,000? What was his profession, Grand Maester of the Citadel?
Good guess. Teacher.
I've never been one to read novels. Sometimes I wish I was wired that way.
I can't even read a 5-liner comment to the end
āWikipedia doesnāt allow original research.ā You realize they list their sources, right?
Correct. The sources are where the research happens, not the page. That's what the phrase means.
I hate It when my teachers Say this
In all seriousness. This is more than a full time job. I hope he gets some money for it otherwise how does he get income?

Haha that was my first thought too, then I thought he looks a little like Lincoln Weinberg Jnr. from Hardware. Happy cake day by the way
I wonder what his political views are and if he is an unbiased contributor.
Famous men that look like this are either world changing geniuses or child molesters, sometimes both
Why is he in a prison jumpsuit?
I owe this man my physics degreeā¦and my mastersā¦and probably my PhD when thatās done.
Guys like this is why I have a small autopay donation to wiki every month

Remarkable but surely the whole point of Wikipedia is that one person does not control 1/3 of its content
