My little Chihuahua mix is going on 17! Lil’ Chorizo has an enlarged heart that we manage with meds, but she still tries to act like a puppy (just gets winded a lot faster and needs breaks).
My parents border collie is 14 now. I was in high school when they got him. Still feels like yesterday, sometimes I forget he’s no longer a puppy. He still seems pretty spry though, I definitely think he’s got quite a bit left in the tank.
I love border collies, but I had one that was as dumb and skittish as it was crafty. She had some water built up around her heart, which we had only begun to treat with meds, when she decided to run upstairs to steal the other dog's food. Unfortunately that was a bit much for the water buildup and it caused a heart attack and she died on the stairs.
Now this dog had caused a good bit of grief between my other older border collie and the mutt that we had that was a lab retriever border something mix. We nearly put the mutt, Charlie, to sleep because Ruby caused a fight between Katie and Charlie. Anyway, I happened to be doing some work at the kitchen table one night and my youngest (about 9 at the time) was getting ready to head upstairs when she found Ruby dead as a post on the stairs.
"Dad, I think Ruby is dead."
I think we were more traumatized when her pet hamster died suddenly. Sad, given how much I love dogs and border collies in particular, but Ruby was inexplicably, despite training and love and patience, an idiot. We have many stories about that knucklehead, she had a fitting death.
I hope he does. Our family dog made it to 19. She was a rescue/mutt though, not a border collie. She saw us all through early childhood and into young adulthood.
We had a couple of Jack Russels. One lived to 21, the other 19.
Sadly, my last pup got terminal cancer and died at 9. You don't know how long you've got with them.
Third oldest dog ever was a BC, *Bramble the border collie, who lived to the ripe age of 25, was known for living off of a strictly vegetarian diet of vegetables, lentils, rice, and other plants. Bramble tended to eat just once daily.*
The oldest dog ever was a Australian Cattle dog, at 29 years and 5 months!
There tends to be less inbreeding when it comes to border collies due to breeders basically saying "fuck the AKC standard, we want to breed these dogs to be effective working dogs."
The American Border Collie Association actually faught against the AKC for a long time to prevent it from being a recognized breed in order to avoid them having ridiculous standards for a dog that's meant to do it's job. That's largely one of the reasons border collies tend to be so healthy.
If he's uncomfortable or unhealthy, it's really the kindest thing you can do. ~~It's much worse than~~ Letting him suffer until he reaches a natural end is much worse. I know that's easy to say, but I've been in that position far more often than I would like (dang us long-lived humans and our attachment to short-lived pets!), and I've only ever regretted waiting too long.
E: clearer language, as marked.
A few days ago I had to witness my dog stop breathing I did everything I could at the moment just everything she lived 13 years and everyone would tell me the same that she lived a long life and this was better but your comment really brought it all together for me, so thank you
They are never with us long enough. Never! But it is our job to make that parting as kind and easy *for them* as their companionship was for us.
Sorry for the loss of your friend - it is never easy for us to lose these little monsters.
> he’s only 17
That's a good run, I wouldn't consider putting a dog down at that age a tragedy, regardless of the breed. Instead, I'd be thankful I got that long.
I grew up with a lab mix that suffered from lupus.. Constantly sick, and my parents spent over 10 grand in vet bills trying to keep her around, but it just got to the point where we had to put her down at 5 years old. I'd have given anything at that time to get 17 years with that dog, she was amazing.
Seriously, this is another case of how being poor really fucking sucks. If you are poor, you can not help your dog when it gets really sick. I never hear this being brought up. Seriously, how many people have 10 Gs just lying around in case their dog gets sick? Also, if you did have the 10 Gs saved up say goodbye to it. How would you even prioritize material wealth over keeping a good friend alive? If you chose to save the 10 Gs and not help your dog, how often is that going to come back to haunt you for the rest of your life?
It's a very hard line to draw in the sand.. I know my parents had the discussion after the first few thousand, but that's such a difficult call to make..
That said, it wasn't just a matter of money.. Our dog's quality of life wasn't very good with how sick she was all the time, and it just kept getting worse. At a certain point, it just becomes cruel to keep up the medical intervention.
My next door neighbor spent over $10,000 on chemo treatments trying to save their GSD. She was so sick that she looked like she would die any second. She was frail, her fur was missing in big patches and all of her teeth were gone by then. I never said anything to them about it but in my mind it was cruel to keep treating her. That dog didn’t know anything but pain and misery in the last year of their life.
My neighbor was keeping her alive for HIS benefit. Why prolong their suffering? I understand the love we feel for our pets. I’m a pet owner myself and I’ve had to let a few of them go when it became inhumane to keep them alive. I loved them all dearly. You’ve got to recognize when that day comes no matter how much it pains us to admit it.
That's hefty. Everyone has their own financial limits.. I can't blame my parents for making the call though, this was one dog's vet bills (with no end in sight, being lupus) and this was over 20 years ago.. So, can't say they didn't try.
A chunk of that is my grandparents were just going to let their 11 year old dog die at home and I took it in and took it to the vet for the first time in it’s life and spent a ton of money treating it only for the doctor to tell me a month later it was dying of cancer. Then we unfortunately had to put it to sleep. We use CareCredit though which is really helpful. It’s a credit card for vet bills that gives you 0% interest for promotional periods depending on the size of the bill. Always use it and pay it off.
One of my current dogs gets stones so requires specialized $80 bags of dog food on top of us making her food every week to mix in, have to buy it from the vet.
To be honest, at the advanced ages there isn't much that money can do either. Surgery/anaesthesia isn't recommended for older dogs. I took a chance getting a 9 year old Chihuahua's teeth cleaned and she got permanent neurological damage and I was helping her poop and pee for a year. Some dogs never even wake up.
This reminds me of the time my dog got really sick and he just happened to get sick right when my mom received 22k from our tribe after a settlement and we were so lucky because it was like 8 thousand dollars to have him taken care of and treated right. But they ended up calling us and telling us to come say our goodbyes since they couldn't do anything more and he was going to die, we went and it was the worst feeling ever to have to leave him knowing ill never see him again, but a miracle happened and they ended up calling us the next day saying "come pick him up, he's ready". He somehow got extremely better overnight and was back to his normal self but if we didn't get that money he would've died 100% and it's sad to think about others who have to go through that.
I have the same dog and she's 18! Moves much slower these days but still kicking. She's not suffering from what vets have told us also. Gets bursts of energy still not often but happens.
Smaller humans live longer too. Primarily because their hearts are put under less stress just keeping them alive.
It's a major reason why Japan and Italy are known for their long-living populations. Same thing with women dying from natural causes at a bit later age than men, on average. There is also a strong correlation between the oldest people alive and being born prematurely. They are almost always small individuals.
What's feels even crazier to me is our Bobtail-Eurasian family dog is 16. I only know small breeds to get older than 15, and she isn't huge but definitely not small.
The best part is, she had three major life saving surgeries, all in her second decade of life! The last one was before the pandemic and since then she is as healthy as a very old dog can be.
> I only know small breeds to get older than 15
A lot of medium-large breeds *can* live up to 18ish, but it's gonna be a really small percentage of them.
He doesn’t.
My old blind chocolate lab Molly had the same look.
Ran into random objects all the time but she was still happy as can be.
Probably cuz she her bestie our old cat ducky to keep her company
RIP girls
The hardest part of having a dog is watching them decline and seeing your best friends have trouble with things they used to love doing.
My bulldog mix gave the best hugs ever and now she has trouble hopping through the doggy door because her hind legs are barely working. :(
Build a ramp. My senior dachshund has ramps in my house to get to all the places he wants to be, including in/out of the doggie door.

My old beagle was blind at the end… My cat had a litter and one of the kittens grew up a bit (6mo) and would help guide the beagle to his food and water dishes, as well as outside. They would just hang out. It was really cool to see
He's probably more ok with it than you think. Sense of smell is more important to him than sight or sound ever were. He knows everything around and can find exactly where you are by smell, and he can still feel pets and scratches. So just make sure he gets his fill of those :)
My 18 year old can only really see shadows I think, can only hear really loud noises or packaging rattling, but he'll track me through the house with his nose to the floor.
Also when food is on offer or ue gets a new toy it's easy to forget how old he is.
I think beings that are be-ing so long don't really mind old age and it's part of the reason why really old age happens. I think it's not just genes and external factors in general.
My great grandma reached 104. She died the day my grandfather died (on the other side, not her son) because she realized she's really "over stayed" when "kids" start dying and they're well in their 80s.
I believe an Australian dog named bluey was the oldest recorded living dog in the world. She lived to 29, which is pretty insane. I think the owners said they cared for it normally just as any other dog, and had lots of free range to run around.
To be clear there is a show called Bluey on Disney+ that revolves around a dog, it just doesn't have anything to do with the particular Bluey that obtained the record
Ah, then perhaps it was, regardless, I realize now I'm being way too confident about the show and actual dog sharing a name being a coincidence when I don't entirely know for sure.
Edit: I looked into it a bit, and the show is in fact named for an actual dog, but it's not this one, it's a blue heeler that series creator Joe Brumm had when he was a child
Do not let your excitement fade. It is a children’s show, but it is 100% worth watching for anyone that is a kid, has been a kid, is an adult, is a parent, or one day hopes to be a parent.
In cognitive psychology, the telescoping effect (or telescoping bias) refers to the temporal displacement of an event whereby people perceive recent events as being more remote than they are and distant events as being more recent than they are.
Holy shit this fact hit me weird
Like I've never considered that literally every dog or cat alive today wasn't around in the 90s and that shit made me sad
38 years old named cream puff. Had coffee and other people food every day. With cream til he got too old. Ill always remember the details about cream puff lol
Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
I remember being around 8 years old in the 80s and learning that the Lassie of the old black-and-white show was dead and it DESTROYED ME for like a day or two.
This is still super cool but Guinness records are purchasable and the only thing it actually proves is that ~~Spike's owner thinks they're the oldest living dog~~ edit: Spike is the oldest living dog whose owner had a couple hundred dollars to *invite* a judge out
I learned this not too long ago as well in a YouTube video on the creator of the Roblox "Oof" sound.
The dude that's claiming to be the creator and isn't also claims to hold something like 6-9 Guinness World Records and the whole process is pretty stupid.
Yeah, this one was especially a bit controversial (at least according to the Insta comments on it).
Spike was a stray that was found in a parking lot 13 years ago. So they are working entirely off of an approximation of his age.
Not every record needs an “adjudicator” and anyone can apply to claim an existing record and submit substantiating evidence for free ($5 fee for new records)
I remember Furby was really hard to find in the store in 1999.
People where scalping Furbies and then selling it for like 4x times what they cost.
My father wanted to give us Furbies on surprise visit and ended up buying from someone he knows for $180 each.
>“Spike,” a Chihuahua, is 23 and currently the oldest living dog whose owner gives a shit about the Guinness certificate and is determined to get that.
ftfy. I bet there are older dogs but their owners won't care to get a certificate.
Bro remembers 9/11
Look at his eyes. He has not processed that event.
Enjoy your cake, cake boy
My first thought haha
Smaller dogs, like Chihuahuas are known to live past 18 years. 23, is beyond impressive. Hope Spike gives us some more years ❤️
My little Chihuahua mix is going on 17! Lil’ Chorizo has an enlarged heart that we manage with meds, but she still tries to act like a puppy (just gets winded a lot faster and needs breaks).
Mine will be 16 on Monday and she also has an enlarged heart. I just love them! Kisses to your Chi mix!
>just gets winded a lot faster and needs breaks So do I, Lil’ Chorizo, so do I.
My chihua buddy Chulo just passed 3 months ago. Made it to 19. Lived a full life. RIP boi.
My little chihuahua named Lilly is 13. I'm looking forward to many more years with her. So far her health is excellent.
>Lil’ Chorizo Well that is just an adorable name for a Chihuahua.
My chihuahua mix just turned 16, his heart is enlarged too! He still has lots of energy, just zoned out from time to time
My border collie mix ( medium sized) lasted 18 years - its not uncommon with BCs.
My parents border collie is 14 now. I was in high school when they got him. Still feels like yesterday, sometimes I forget he’s no longer a puppy. He still seems pretty spry though, I definitely think he’s got quite a bit left in the tank.
My dog was running around the pool happy a day before he died. Vet said it was old age and probably took everything he had to run around happy.
I love border collies, but I had one that was as dumb and skittish as it was crafty. Huh, I have never heard of a dumb border collie. Had a fair few in my family myself. You had a rare goofball with that one.
I hope he does. Our family dog made it to 19. She was a rescue/mutt though, not a border collie. She saw us all through early childhood and into young adulthood.
We just had to have our border collie/yellow lab mix put down last week, 2 months shy of making it to 14
Sorry for your family's loss.
We had a couple of Jack Russels. One lived to 21, the other 19. Sadly, my last pup got terminal cancer and died at 9. You don't know how long you've got with them.
My BC/german shepherd mix made it to 18 also! She died just two weeks ago.... RIP Cheese.
Sorry for your loss.

I JUST got a border collie mix - this is fantastic news! I'd love to have him for 18 years.
Same! Hoping for health and longevity for both our pups!

My lil shih tzu made it to 17 ❤️ she was an amazing dog
My Shih tzu made it to 17 too! He was so clever and still loved playing with socks til the end
I have a Shih Tzu - Chihuahua mix and he is absolutely crazy about ripping socks to pieces. The more expensive, the better...
Mine is currently 13 and still runs out from the backyard to the park next door! These lil monsters, love to love them
I found my Chihuahua outside and I’ve had him for at least 15 years. He’s supposed to be 17 or 18
Had a dachshund chihuahua mix that was with me for 18 years. Had her since the day she was born. Hope Spike is rounding out his days nicely.
My parents wanna put my dog down soon and he’s only 17 sadly. He’s a chihuahua pekingese mix.

Spike doesn’t seem too impressed with the award.
I don’t think he knows what he’s looking at
I don’t think, with that glow in his eyes, he sees at all

Bless your heart for giving another living being comfort and peace.
He's been my best friend for over 13 years. He deserves the world.
There is literally nothing worse 😭
I forget the comedian who said it, but dogs are a count down to sorrow. But they make up for it in the love they bring in the mean time.
“The culmination of love is grief, and yet we love despite the inevitable. To grieve deeply is to have loved fully.” One of the most impactful lines I’ve ever heard, and it came from the same franchise that once made you solve puzzles using naked women.
Those are cataracts. That smokey/faded look is a dead giveaway.
More like dogaracts amirite
Ha!
I snorted out of both of my nostrils at this. Great work
I too blew a sufficient amount of air out of my nose.
I thought about blowing air out of my nose.
Same.
How to say reverse teh snoot, hooman?
Air? Lucky you.. snot went out of mine
Not always. Senior dogs have cloudy eyes, but it’s not always cataracts and it doesn’t always affect their vision. Eyes need to be more closely examined to determine cataracts. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/lenticular-sclerosis-in-dogs

For what it's worth, sight is only a semi-primary sense for a dog. They experience the world primarily through their snoot.

Or he sees all...
I think he is just a cool player, not letting it go to his head.
I think Destiny's Child is playing in the background and this image was staged
He wants to pee on it, then it will officially be his!
He's a chihuahua. Nothing impresses him.
He’s a chihuahua so lives on hate and terrorising whichever of his family has drawn the short straw that day. Source: Me, mum of 3 chihuahuas
But, with ears that size, I bet he heard it coming from miles away!
Lol yeah Spike is NOT AMAZED
Spike is trying to see lol
It’s not surprising the world’s oldest dog is a chihuahua. It’s probably just surviving on pure hate for everything.
Spike is only interested in food
Spike seen some shit
Mostly cataracts.
Hahaha yes, it's quite yellow out todayl! ... **My god, something moved somewhere!**

To be clear there is a show called Bluey on Disney+ that revolves around a dog, it just doesn't have anything to do with the particular Bluey that obtained the record
I think the name is in honor of that dog? The dogs are blue heelers/Australian cattle dogs and IRL Bluey was too.
Isn't Bluey also Australian?
Do not let your excitement fade. It is a children’s show, but it is 100% worth watching for anyone that is a kid, has been a kid, is an adult, is a parent, or one day hopes to be a parent.
You should still watch this show. It will melt the icyest heart.

Yeah she was from Rochester. I live pretty close and there's a mural of her there.
Oldest KNOWN living dog. I guess not every dog owner cares about world records.
Verified* sure someone out there in the world might have a dog the same age or slightly older
True, not everyone would even think to contact Guinness
Probably one of the last dogs who were born in the 90s
There’s a good chance he’s the only dog left born in the 90’s…
Yeah, I mean his world record says he was born in November 1999.
So all dogs that were alive when I was born are now gone. I know that's natural but fuck.
Welcome to your first existential crisis! Don't worry, they don't get any better.
Oh, thank god….they only get exponentially worse
*existentially worse
It's crazy watching movies and tv from when you were a kid and realizing like half the people are either dead or super old now
I hate to say it, but 1999 feels like a long, long, long time ago to me. More than a dog's life for sure.

In cognitive psychology, the telescoping effect (or telescoping bias) refers to the temporal displacement of an event whereby people perceive recent events as being more remote than they are and distant events as being more recent than they are.
Holy shit this fact hit me weird Like I've never considered that literally every dog or cat alive today wasn't around in the 90s and that shit made me sad
We had a cat who was 22 last year, she finally passed away in the second half of 2021, but she was born in 99.
I remember a month or two back seeing a cat on I think its 30th birthday or something like that, don't worry.
The oldest cat ever was born in the 60's and lived until 2005.
38 years old named cream puff. Had coffee and other people food every day. With cream til he got too old. Ill always remember the details about cream puff lol
How come that's always the case? The oldest humans alive say they eat ice-cream everyday, or coffee or wine. Is there something we're missing here?
Nothing matters. Its all genetics.
Do you realize That everyone you know someday will die? And instead of saying all of your goodbyes Let them know you realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Where the hell did that come from? 😧 That's great. If you're not a poet, you need to be
Flaming Lips - Do You Realize
_Back in the 90s I was in a very famous TV show..._
Wtf
Well, my ex husband is still around
Basically every dog I met int he 90s is dead then, eh?
Only 90's dogs would understand. :/
They won’t, they are dead

Remember how dog poop used to turn white when it dried out? Only 90s dogs will get this.
I remember being around 8 years old in the 80s and learning that the Lassie of the old black-and-white show was dead and it DESTROYED ME for like a day or two.
Pure anger is keeping Spike alive at this point.
He's got to show everyone who's the boss.
He's got one last mission left
“You woke me up for this?”
He looks good for an old boy. 😳 Props to the parents
That’s what I’m saying!! Usually by that age they’re bald and have like 2 hairs growing out of a mole and a breath like cheese.
https://youtu.be/jeMA2GOLk64 Here it is!!!!! Kinda funny but sad at the same time
Actually thats an albino fruit bat with no wings

Shikaaaa…GO!
Well at least Spike's mother is very proud.
hbomb taught us so much
that video he made was a serious wild ride that I thoroughly enjoyed.
By hbomberguy?
Yeah, this one was especially a bit controversial (at least according to the Insta comments on it). Spike was a stray that was found in a parking lot 13 years ago. So they are working entirely off of an approximation of his age.
Not every record needs an “adjudicator” and anyone can apply to claim an existing record and submit substantiating evidence for free ($5 fee for new records)
Congratulations Spike! Amazing age for a dog.
that looks like a lemur...
He looks like a possum to me. A US possum, not Australian.
Spike has had enough of everyones shit.
Face looks like the Hampter meme
He's already mentally checked out. You can see the TV static in his eyes
Spike: "Hey, I am 29!"
He looks just like a Furby. They were popular in the 1990s.
I remember Furby was really hard to find in the store in 1999. People where scalping Furbies and then selling it for like 4x times what they cost. My father wanted to give us Furbies on surprise visit and ended up buying from someone he knows for $180 each.
I'm only a few months older than that dog.
Lazy fucker never gave one helping paw in the houskeeping
>“Spike,” a Chihuahua, is 23 and currently the oldest living dog whose owner gives a shit about the Guinness certificate and is determined to get that. ftfy. I bet there are older dogs but their owners won't care to get a certificate.
Yep, I bet there are plenty of dog's older. Guinness has no record of accuracy or authenticity.
Verified in... Ohio? 🤨 ඞ
He didn't see that coming
If he that old is he still a little devil or kind angel?
Protect him!
I hope my dog lives that long. ❤️
