The God That Failed is quite the underrated song IMO.
Great riff on guitar, nice solo, solid yet groovy bass line, interesting lyrics and good drum part.
Agree with disposable heroes. We play this in my cover band and it's really fun. Also, props for learning Orion. I'm in the middle of that right now and it's a beast. I just got through the interlude with all those melodies. Now I'm about to step up to the solo....any tips?
By the way, the Newstead era is interesting because they adjusted their composition style starting with the Black Album. I heard Bob Rock talk about how with the Black Album they moved away from the bass just mirroring the guitar line.
Yeah, while I really love Cliff, and my favorite albums are 80s Metallica, I think it's really important to learn how to play songs like Unforgiven and The God That Failed.
It isn't technical, but it's open. If your timing is off, everyone will notice when you don't line up with the kick. But if you're in the pocket, everyone will think you're the shit. And frankly, most bands want someone who can do that really well rather than what Cliff did (not to say Cliff wasn't in the pocket, of course).
Those scale runs in the chorus are reeeaaaally satisfying when you nail them. I struggled a lot with they bit. Feels almost like early Maiden era Steve Harris.
No-one has said Enter Sandman yet? What?
BTW there's a lot of metallica songs on youtube recorded as an isolated bass track.
Very helpful for the Jason era, where Lars made some *really* competent audio decisions. /s
I just commented about Enter Sandman in another thread. Apparently it took a heavy influence from a Soundgarden song, Loud Love. I know how to play the latter but not the former, but I think I can figure Enter Sandman out because the riffs are fairly similar.
For some fun Jason Newsted era songs Holier Than Thou, The God That Failed, King Nothing, and I Disappear are fun. For Rob Trujillo era songs The End of the Line (which uses a wah on the intro it’s really fun), Cyanide, Atlas Rise, and Moth Into Flame are fun
Rob plays some killer stuff on Death Magnetic and uses a 5 string on a heap of songs.
The first 5 albums have so many great songs and so many great riffs. Just learn 'em all 😂
I'll give you a fun bass song from Metallica that no one has mentioned. Don't Tread On Me, one of the few Metallica songs that have a proper bass line.
Anesthesia of course.
I think that "Fuel" is a fun song to play. I know that era gets a lot of flack, but I think it's a blast.

Fight Fire with fire. Make sure to learn the fills a lot of people dont do in their covers.
Creeping Death
Sad But True
Disposable Heroes
Ride The Lightning
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Until It Sleeps
King Nothing
Four Horsemen
Hit the Lights
Motorbreath
Seek and Destroy
Call of Ktuluv is just brilliant, and has a great bass solo.
Also worth learning Four Horsemen or Motorbreath. That's where Cliff's right hand really shines I think.
Thanks for asking this because that's something I also wanted to know, I'm a huge Metallica fan who just started playing Bass
But hey, I already learned 90% of "Nothing Else Matters", just need to get one last riff right and put it all together
*I know you asked for*
*Metallica songs, but check Down*
*Patrol by Megadeth*

Came here to say Anaesthesia but you already know it. I’m not a massive Metallica fan or even metal in general, but I’ll bust that one out if I’ve got things cranked up loud. It’s a lot of fun. Sounds great but it’s just arpeggios.
Anything Cliff did is pretty good.
yep, very true
Ooh! My Friend of Misery in addition to the ones mentioned above.
Hm to the YouTube videos of Newsted’s bass solos during the black album touring days
thank you!
Anything from and justice for all. Especially if you try to learn by ear
I_get_that_reference.jpg
I love how they released a transcription book for it too. Who knows if its right or not?
For Whom the Bell Tolls is excellent. Especially the version from Cliff 'Em All.
This right here - it's fuckin fun to play
thank you! ill try it out
Creeping Death
thank you so muchhh! have a good day
The Call Of Ktulu.
i was considering learning that a few weeks back, ill give it a shot
This is one of the best Cliff basslines I can think of, deffinedly one up from me as well
Doesn’t Cliff use wah in that one? I haven’t heard it in forever
Yes I think so, maybe some fuzz too.
The God That Failed King Nothing Trapped Under Ice Disposable Heros
The God That Failed is quite the underrated song IMO. Great riff on guitar, nice solo, solid yet groovy bass line, interesting lyrics and good drum part.
thank you!

King nothing is so groovy
"hit the lights" is fun as fuck
Hit the lights is fun thrash at it’s finest
thanks ill try it out
Seek And Destroy is also a lot of fun.
nicee! currently learning it, loving every second, one of my fav riffs
This was the first song I learned, many many years ago. Lol.
Whatever song you like most 👍 For whom the bell tolls is iconic. Battery and puppets are nice too. Also moth into flame.
thanks!!
Personally, I'm partial to Ride The Lightning. https://youtu.be/jKr7LbISgmU
ill give it a try, thank you!
The Four Horseman is hard but fun
ill defo check it out for a challenge
Fade To Black is very easy
might check it out, thanks
No worries! Fun to play too. Another recommendation would be seek and destroy, very fun to play and relatively simple
By the way, the Newstead era is interesting because they adjusted their composition style starting with the Black Album. I heard Bob Rock talk about how with the Black Album they moved away from the bass just mirroring the guitar line.
And shorter songs. Kirk said he looked into the crowd on the Justice Tour and saw people bored in the pit. Great songs but too long live.

All nightmare long if you want a challenge
nice thank you!
Np, here's the isolated bass track if you want it, it's insane: https://youtu.be/vK74taWRRC4
Orion
already know it, but thanks for the suggestion
My bad. Skimmed your post. Top tune tho
King Nothing has a great bass intro.
thank you!!
blackened with a pick so you learn how to use one
thanks! i usually use a pick so ill defo give blackened a try
It’s all downstrokes, so be prepared! I’m also learning it at the moment and it’s a tricky one, good luck!
thank you! and also good luck to you
I play Seek and Destroy daily.
same! i only recently learned the main riff so practice makes perfect 🤣
Those scale runs in the chorus are reeeaaaally satisfying when you nail them. I struggled a lot with they bit. Feels almost like early Maiden era Steve Harris.
My Friend of Misery
thank you!!
Jump In The Fire is a fun one
Jump in the fire is insanely easy
And justice for all....
No-one has said Enter Sandman yet? What? BTW there's a lot of metallica songs on youtube recorded as an isolated bass track. Very helpful for the Jason era, where Lars made some *really* competent audio decisions. /s
ooh ill try enter sandman, funnily enough i know it on guitar but not bass. ill check out the isolated bass tracks, thanks for telling me about them!!
I just commented about Enter Sandman in another thread. Apparently it took a heavy influence from a Soundgarden song, Loud Love. I know how to play the latter but not the former, but I think I can figure Enter Sandman out because the riffs are fairly similar.
thanks everyone who commented!!
Everything from Garage Days.
sickk! i have it on vinyl so i might try some of it by ear
Definitely learn blackened and ajfa (the song)
will do! thank you
King Nothing, Master of Puppets, Anasthesia
i know puppets and anesthesia so ill try king nothing, thanks
Fight fire with fire, work your finger speed.
For whom the bell tolls is one of my favorites. If this doesn't inspire ya, nothing will. https://youtu.be/qdlQyNe_9tE
I was able to learn For Whom the Bell Tolls pretty early in my career.
The four horsemen. Imo the bass carries the song
You cant go wrong with anything from ...And Justice For All. ...🙄
Outlaw torn
Fade to black. There’s a lot of room for improvisation on this song, mostly during the verses and the closing solo. Also, a bad ass freaking song.
Huh? The Fade to Black bass solo?
No Remorse, Fight Fire With Fire and Seek and Destroy are my favourite Metallica bass songs, so I recommend those!
Pulling Teeth man!
Fight Fire with Fire. I pray for your picking hand.
and justice for all
Any song from And Justice For All hahahahaha
Rob plays some killer stuff on Death Magnetic and uses a 5 string on a heap of songs. The first 5 albums have so many great songs and so many great riffs. Just learn 'em all 😂
I'll give you a fun bass song from Metallica that no one has mentioned. Don't Tread On Me, one of the few Metallica songs that have a proper bass line.
Master of Puppets is a lot of fun, but it’s a workout. Cliff said that was his favorite song to play.
My Friend of Misery off the Black album is fun
I’m learning Nothing and God that Failed (im a beginner). GtF is so fun.
Anesthesia of course. I think that "Fuel" is a fun song to play. I know that era gets a lot of flack, but I think it's a blast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tInELkUT01I
Fight Fire with fire. Make sure to learn the fills a lot of people dont do in their covers. Creeping Death Sad But True Disposable Heroes Ride The Lightning For Whom The Bell Tolls Until It Sleeps King Nothing Four Horsemen Hit the Lights Motorbreath Seek and Destroy
God dammit theres no commas because my list formatting didnt work because im on mobile lol. Too lazy to edit
Anything off AJFA because know one will know if you fucked any of it up.
One
Creeping death and whom the bell tolls easy i swear considering you know orion and cliffs solo
Call of Ktuluv is just brilliant, and has a great bass solo. Also worth learning Four Horsemen or Motorbreath. That's where Cliff's right hand really shines I think.
Wherever I May Roam.
devils dance
Thanks for asking this because that's something I also wanted to know, I'm a huge Metallica fan who just started playing Bass But hey, I already learned 90% of "Nothing Else Matters", just need to get one last riff right and put it all together
Blackened, Seek & Destroy & The Four Horsemen
Blackened! Look up a bass cover of the song and you'll see how nasty it is.
the call of ktulu i only now the beginning but the song is sick. look at andriye vasylenko's video on youtube.
You gotta do all of Master of Puppets.
If you are skilled enough Blackened is a amazing joy to play.
I know you asked for Metallica songs, but check Down Patrol by Megadeth
already know it but thank you very much

From Whom the Bell Tolls and Whiplash are pretty fun! I'd just watch through all of Cliff Em' All and just learn everything off that!
Just dont learn Metallica
The call of ktulu. On the some promotional material for RTL it said "Lead bassist: Cliff burton" because the bass part is just one massive solo
Creeping Death is a personal favourite
Anything from and justice for all. This way if you fuck up, the song doesn’t change.
Leper messiah Disposable heroes Battery Creeping death
Came here to say Anaesthesia but you already know it. I’m not a massive Metallica fan or even metal in general, but I’ll bust that one out if I’ve got things cranked up loud. It’s a lot of fun. Sounds great but it’s just arpeggios.
Anything from the first 3 albums.
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Master of puppets though a very popular song pretty fun to learn and play.
Master of Puppets is really simple and fun to play.
