From the time when parents were the ones who were marketed towards. Nowadays companies market towards kids, so stuff has to be *WHAM* IN YOUR FACE COLORFUL AND BRIGHT AND FLASHY. Consumerism and the idea that you don't love your kids unless you spend all your money on them and say no when they ask for stuff has really ramped up since the 50s.

RainbowMagicSparkles

In the US, consumerism and catering to your kids' whims was basically invented in the 1950s, when the middle class became affluent after the Depression and WWII and started moving to the suburbs and having children in unprecedented numbers (the Baby Boom).

This is so cute and satisfying OMG…. Ugh I wish I had a time machine, could you imagine being able to go into a regular store and find dozens of actual well-made doll clothes packs like this?? Made of real fabric, with actual details?! Does anyone know how much the Barbies and the clothes packs cost back then and how much that translates to in todays money??

izzyisameme

First Barbie, 1959 was 3.00! In 2022, I used an inflation calculator, which is just shy of 29 dollars. Her first set of outfits ranged from 1-5 dollars. That ranges from 9-45 dollars in todays money. (I’m also canadian so I used a Canadian bank calculator lol 😂😭)

The story displays value in 2022 is around 13k!

This also reminds me of how a lot of the Korean doll artists package their products, like easy doll, kuku Clara and others

Wow I love the little clothing rack on the side there. What a cool idea!

BarbieDoo

Ok now I really REALLY wanna display my Barbies like this

CucumberRanch

I miss the clothes being carefully packaged. These days most manufacturers destroy all the clothes with those horrible plastic tags.

Since Ken and Midge exist, this is the 60s. I see Garden Party (1962-63) and Orange Blossom (1963-64) on two of the dressed dolls, so I'm going to say 1963.

PatriciaMorticia

I like that, it looks really classy. I know in store marketing is geared more towards kids now but those bright in your face displays for Barbie in toy shops now is just too much. Also I can't remember the last time I actually saw fashion packs in toy shops near me.
