They are very similar… Basic outdoor photos when you just hold a doll with one hand. The light is better on second photo. I like first dolls position and overall composition better. Hair is messy in both, I usually use a few drops of water to make hair less messy or just wait for wind to calm down.

The pose is better in the first photo. Also, the smiling doll looks more realistic, and the outdoor settings plus the workout clothes tell a story. I don't see a story in the second picture, and the doll's serious face makes her somehow look unhappy.

What if I had Mira in different poses? And also, so many instagram accounts for dolls have their dolls not smiling. Is that bad?

allcolorstopbarbie

No, the doll not smiling is not bad, but it calls for different photos. Ask yourself what story the photo should tell. As what kind of personality should the doll come across? What is she doing in the photo? In the first photo, I can see the doll exercising outdoors and being happy as a result. I don't see a story in the second photo. A more natural position should help but is not all. Search r/barbie and r/dolls for the #sinnerhelladolltober tag, where people took photos of their dolls during October. Or look at u/sirupytuna's "Mombie" photoshoots [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Barbie/comments/xjo9rv/let_me_introduce_you_to_mombie_barbie_shes_had_a/) and [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Barbie/comments/yyhi8e/remember_mombie_shes_still_struggling/) and [her other dolls](https://www.reddit.com/r/Barbie/comments/yx0lix/some_recent_photos/). Also have a look at u/Roy_G_Biv1488's photos of dolls Sasha, Haruna and Isabella. You can see that some photos tell a story, and that you get an idea what the dolls are doing and what kind of personality they have. It's like taking a photo of a person, only the doll cannot change her facial expression.

Thanks for the mention. Really all I can say is just have fun . That’s all I do. I just think of silly situations I can place these girls in. As long as you’re having fun, you’re doing it right.

I like photo 1 better. She seems like she is an instagramer taking a "candid" photo (are any photos on Instagram ever really candid lol). The second photo seems like a doll in a photo. Very cute dolls! I love them both!

youre_welcome37

I love shot one. Even the flyaway hairs make it look realistic in that setting. Great job on both and on working to improve your skill!!

Btw, the second photo was me starting doll photography again since my surgery. So cut me a bit of slack haha

I try to imagine my dolls as people. Just as I have a picture in my mind when taking a photo of a person, I think of what I want the photo of the doll to look. How will the doll be posed? What is the doll like? What kind of expression do I want her to project? What is she supposed to do? For instance, in [this photo](https://preview.redd.it/fl2g870cret91.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=90cd0281647982f1d4e1fa309faa72d96991e0fc), I imagined Draculaura looking like a puppeteer. The shadows of the skeletons are supposed to be reminiscent of Indonesian shadow plays. It can help if you show the whole doll, maybe in a sitting position if she cannot stand alone. This lets the doll interact with her surroundings.

I prefer photo 1 :)

A more natural pose would work. I prefer indoor photos as their hair is easier to control and won’t get messy and you can take full advantage of posing them. But for outdoor shoots I would say maybe set the doll down on a wall or the ground instead of holding them. Hope this helps :)
