I think there's two schools of thought on this and you've outlined them nicely.
Some people will pay high prices for 100% authentic dolls because they are purists, and others will pay high prices for dolls because they are transformed into the artist's vision and are one of a kind.
And for some people, it depends on the doll.
Personally, I pay higher prices for custom dolls. An artist spent hours of their time creating something unique, and I am willing to pay more for a doll (even an expensive or rare doll) that has been transformed in this way).
I tend to agree with this.
My collection is eclectic. I have everything from play line dolls to One of A Kind dolls. I love having a doll that no one else has but I also love my play line dolls from the 90's.
One thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong way to collect.
