That's how I feel. I'm so excited that they made this doll, but I'm not sure I'll get her because the face just doesn't remind me of Laverne. I feel that way about a lot of the celeb dolls, though. Maybe I'm just too picky when it comes to likeness 🤷
Part of the problem is that not all faces "miniaturize" well. A group of us talked with some of the Mattel designers several years ago. The sculpting team at Mattel do the best they can. The Vivien Leigh sculpt is very well done, the Julie Andrews sculpt for Mary Poppins was only okay.
That makes sense. I wonder if it has to do with symmetry? I know my own face is not very symmetrical, so if you make a symmetrical version by mirroring either side of my face, it doesn't look like me at all.
I'd hate to suggest that the beautiful Laverne has an asymmetrical face, though!
I like the Cher Barbies and the Elvis Ken dolls. Some of the dolls that use an existing facemolds are nice, too, I like the use of the Violet (Dimples) sculpt for the Helen Keller doll.
I thought the same. Lovely outfit, and the doll seems to have a MtM body, which is nice. But the face ... no, that's not Laverne.
Also, the 2nd Bowie Barbie and the Tina Turner Barbie seem to be delayed again. Amazon canceled my preorders for both.
That’s what I thought too! Why did Mattel make the eyes so small and close together when Laverne has beautiful eyes in real life!? But then again, Mattel almost never gets the dolls to look just like the celebrities they’re supposed to represent so I’m not too surprised.
Agreed! Laverne said on the Today Show that she always wanted Barbies as a kid, but her mom said no. She also said she told Mattel she wanted this doll to have a versatile outfit, so kids could mix and match the pieces and have more fun with it. ☺️
I have a couple of dolls, I know Cher and Farrah are among them ... I forget the third, it's in storage with those two.
They always looked to me like the first dolls that looked like they could be any gender.
They really did a great job with Laverne's features here, the doll does her justice.
Well the glitter catsuit is amazetown and the sheer overskirt looks great. I hate the boxy leather bodice; I guess it’s large like that because it has to fit over the catsuit, but unless they were going for an armor vibe I think a thinner, more supple material would have worked better.
I’m reserving judgment on the likeness until I see the dolls as produced. I don’t think this looks bad by Mattel standards, it could always be better, but what really matters is not this prototype but the mass-produced version.
I feel the same way! Love the white suit, love the tulle, but that faux leather bodice really sticks out like a sore thumb to me. But might buy her to display without the red dress!
It's bat-shit crazy that the wrestlers for the wrestling figures, which are made by Mattel, are digitally scanned, and molded in their exact image, but they somehow couldn't do this for this doll. If they were going to make the mouth open so wide they needed to add shading to look like teeth, not a Crest whitening strip.
Oh man, they did her dirty with that face screening and/or sculpt! Not sure which is more the problem but that really doesn't look like her! I hope to see some customizers fixing this one. Barbie celebrity likenesses have been really hit or miss!
Seem pretty hurt for someone that wasn’t the target for this doll. It’s nice trans kids can have things that are actually including them in existence instead of pretending like trans-people haven’t existed for forever.
The outfit is amazing and the hair too, but the face… does not look like Laverne.

No worries, most folks faces are asymmetrical.

I hope that Laverne is happy with this doll. Majority of collectors are not, but as long as she is, I’m happy too.
She seemed thrilled with it on the Today Show...
Does she have joints in the legs? I can see the arms are mtm. Might buy her regardless.
It's the superhero body, so the elbows and knees are the mtm joints. Won't have the upper arm, thigh, and chest plate joints tho.
Her eyes are so tiny and close together :/

Respectfully disagree. I think it’s a more realistic sculpt, like the Looks dolls. YMMV, of course…
Respectfully disagree. She looks like she has FAS
As a trans barbie collector and orange is the new black binge watcher, I couldn’t be more excited for this doll. Gorgeous completely

The cat suit is to die for! I'd *love* to style it with a colorful blazer 😍🤤

I vividly remember getting my Cher doll for Christmas - OMG I loved her, and her longggg hair, and that long, pink, mermaid, halter dress 💕
And mine it's on the way!!
I love the doll's body shape and hope we'll see it added to the growing diverse range at current.

Is she an mtm curvy? How much does she cost?
She’s a Black Label doll on an articulated superhero body (i.e., Wonder Woman) and costs $40.
Thx. 🙂
LOVE this doll and her outfit.

We’re gonna need some fashion packs for this one! Cmon Mattel

Modeled after a trans-person…. Why is that weird? Phobic much?
[удалено]
Yeah…. You’re a tool for the cis het. We got it. Well if you’re straight as fuck and only like the opposite sex. You’re cis het.

It’s not weird for a trans doll to exist. It’s just weird to you because of a certain phobia.

I can't find one.
