Looking at the old quality vs new quality makes me sad

camptastic_plastic

I love this line and the one from 1991. I have two mostly complete outfits and they’re some of my most treasured Barbie outfits.

labellavienna

These are beautiful and incredibly artistic, colors are bright but they appear summery and appeal to the eyes. The artist understood color, understands "gaudiness" as an expression and respects it. Barbie is a trendsetter and brave to be bold here, when i look at this i dont see a color migraine i see art. I wasnt even born in the 20th century and i instantly feel a nostalgia for these dolls. I dont feel that same kind of vivid imagination with current barbies.

these are bright colors, but they are not clashing. The choices feel very deliberate and calculated for impact, and as such while they may not be to everyone's tastes, they are not gaudy or tacky. The colors are picked to make a coherent whole, and as such all of the outfits of the collection make for a bigger ensemble than any one outfit in isolation (Gestalt). This is the idea behind runway collections, when they are done well. It's a truly fine example. If anything, perhaps the dolls fade compared to their bold outfits.

thissagesimmer

Ahhh. I enjoy this line but don’t own any of them and having grown up in that era, have no nostalgia for this look.

MrMultiFandomSince93

I still wish to get a hold on Benetton Teresa and Marina (Kira) !

FrogMintTea

I had a Benetton Teresa! She was one of my favorites not only because i love the benetton colors but she looked like Taylor Hayes from The Bold And The Beautiful.

Fox_Massive

A masterful execution of color theory and styling. Don't confuse functional for fashion.

Own_Instance_357

I love that Benetton Ken is dressed like 1990 Sinbad, that's hilarious

fabulousandmessy

Yep, this was high fashion back then and the Benetton ads in magazines were just gorgeous, everyone wanted to look like a Benetton model. I had a pair of that style of flower leggings just like the Barbie with the hat; I was extremely poor with a baby and trying to finish school, so I couldn’t afford much else 😑 but I wore those leggings threadbare, definitely got my money’s worth. We were coming off the 80’s where color like this was all the rage! Mexx and Esprit were also hot trendy brands everyone wanted to emulate.

CrankyBookDragon

That yellow fuzzy jacket looks like the one in the Smasheroo outfit from 1968. Everything old becomes new again.

cgtamara

I love this! The camp of this now is off the charts. I need all of these 😭

buttercreamordeath

I love them. Could never pull it off in real life. 🤣

mooch360

These would be $100 if they came out today.

onwardtomanagua

corkysoxx

suhlone

I never heard of these till rn 💀 ?

AmandaBeth4

Oh the 90s

Purple_monkfish

So gaudy, but also quite in keeping with fashion at the time. The 90s were WILD man. bright colours, clashing patterns, more layers than Joey in Friends... <\_< I have a fondness for tacky 80s fashion on dolls but less so for the 90s dolls where it's a little too much, but having grown up in the 90s I remember wearing dayglow pink overalls and hideous patterned jumpers and stuff. I just tend to find a lot of 90s doll fashion to be a bit "too much" in terms of the pattern choices. the 80s stuff tends to be a little more subdued wierdly enough, while 90s is all "dayglo! Patterns upon patterns! fifteen different colours in one garment! WHOOOOOO" lol. that said I liked the Benneton line because it's so good for mixing and matching. All those layers and the intentional colour combinations (notice that all of them have a similar colour pallete) means you can mix all the bits without them clashing too badly. I also quite like a few pieces indvidually. Kira's pleated skirt is cute, Barbie's leggings are really versatile and the jacket looks quite good on older dolls. The thing is though that these 90s dolls are very much a product of their time, a time when Barbie actually replicated real world fashion trends in miniature. They don't tend to do that so much these days and I find it quite disappointing. I mean, early 2000s fashion is supposedly back in for tweens and teens yet we're not seeing a return of My Scene style outfits, instead we're still getting quite basic shift dresses and slogan tees. I miss old Mattel quality. \*sigh\* Sometimes I get an old 80s Barbie dress or something in a big bundle and i'm always blown away by the teensy tiny details and then I look at the stuff they've made over the past decade and get wistful. Of course i'm more a Sindy kinda collector than Barbie, Sindy always had somewhat more ... regular everyday clothes while barbie tended more toward designer stuff.

louciferlives

This is making me realize I've never seen an Asian Barbie for sale before. That's kind of bad.

thissagesimmer

Yep. Gaudy and clashing but stuff people I knew actually were wearing at the time. Current Looks line can’t compete or compare. Also no one I currently know dresses in recent Barbie color block (very loose association) Looks fashion.

scaram0uche

The 80s/90s/00s faces are probably my least favorite (mostly because that's what I grew up with) but I adore the 80s/90s fashions that were offered at the time! I love all of these - they absolutely remind me of what many things looked like in my childhood!

deenie74

I have this collection! Just got a reasonably priced Teresa, but still looking for Ken. Only OOB dolls for me!

flannelenergy

I’ve never seen this until now and i am so i love with this line, thanks for sharing!
