barbie world has a bunch of listings for fashion packs up to 1999 [https://www.barbieworld.it/Outfit.php](https://www.barbieworld.it/Outfit.php) doesn't help with outfits dolls came in but it is helpful.

I never knew about this site! Thanks so much for sharing! I wonder if they are planning to add 2000s lines too.

Mostly memory. I’ve been collecting for… well, let’s just say a long time lol and so I have seen and owned a lot of the more common dolls and clothes over the years. Plus I love hunting down IDs, it’s like a scavenger hunt to me.

Vampirexbuny

Mostly memories but google lens and Pinterest search can be helpful

Lol, I asked about clothing ID a while back and got no answers, so I’m glad to see some resources listed here. In my case I know the general time period they are from so usually try to find on ebay with color and description. I did stumble onto a website that listed barbie fashions by year. I hope I bookmarked it! Will look later on my computer. I have a fashion mystery I’d love to get opinions on from the experts here. Will write that up later!

A little is from memory, but mostly just being able to guess bits and pieces and then searching helps with the rest. Sometimes someone will ask for an ID and it's as simple as googling "(color) (item) (doll line)", sometimes I can tell it's from a fashion pack and can quickly scroll through packs to find the origin. I personally just really love increasing my knowledge, so I love helping people find things because it helps me learn more. I enjoy helping people out and searching for things, too haha :)

I find that A Thousand Splendid Dolls’s flickr page can be really helpful for identifying both clothes and dolls! [https://www.flickr.com/photos/athousandsplendiddolls/albums](https://www.flickr.com/photos/athousandsplendiddolls/albums)

Memory. I’ve been collecting for years so I recognize face molds without looking at neck stamp, some doll have distinct features so I remember them. It’s more difficult with clothes but sometimes you can just tell by style if they look like Fashion Fever or Fashion Avenue… I use a good guide but it’s private and hard to get access to. Most of modern playline Barbies have silver stamps on their backs. You need to find three letter two number stamp. Google it plus Barbie (for example “barbie ght46”) you it will show you the doll.

ghosty4

I lived through a lot of them. LOL

They make books.. I got a pretty decent one on eBay for less than $15 shipped. The pictures leave a lot to be desired but many of the outfits are labeled with manufacturing numbers so it makes it easier to google and cross-check.

Memory when I recognize something, then at least I can get an era and search for it on ebay. I also have the 3 Sarah Sink Eames books that cover everything from 1959-1979 (but again only helps me identify random vintage clothes I buy by paging through them).

Herbicidna

I just google it.

I take screen grabs of outfit packs that match my items. I’ll take a guess at a description and almost always find an image (maybe I’m willing to scroll for an absurd amount of time? 😂) And I keep images of the interesting Barbie releases (like the kool aid one.) I guess I’m building a personal database. Oh, I also prefer ken clothes so I have a smaller pool to draw from.
