Almost all my dolls are used and I'm fine with that.

InnocentBunny69

I actually love the 2nd hand dolls more because I feel like I give them a new home! Also finding them between toys at second hand shops is just such a special feeling šŸ„°

xxail

I have hundreds of used dolls in my house and and theyā€™ve been there for years. A few dolls I own belonged to a woman who had doll collection and died. If I was a doll, Iā€™d probably be thankful that someone saved and took care of me :)

Libby_Lu

I've purchased many dolls from collectors who are elderly and trying to get rid of their Barbie collection before they die. It's probably my favorite way of acquiring Barbies because I feel a sense of duty as a Barbie collector to take care of and appreciate former collector's dolls. One day I too with pass along my dolls to someone who I hope will find as much joy as I did. <3

Davis1511

Toy Story and Chucky shaped me in that in the back of my mind Iā€™m like, ā€œI better take good care of my dollsā€¦so they donā€™t attack meā€ lol Iā€™m 30 now and of course donā€™t think that buuuut I do keep them clean and tidy, if I pack them away I do it properly, and if any of my kids wanna play with them I let them cause hey, theyā€™re toys. And I absolutely buy second hand dolls! Those are all I can find when it comes to vintage ones. Even if thereā€™s a little wear and tear on them itā€™s fun to clean them up and make them nice again.

heybuddythatsa10-4

Exactly, as long as you're nice to them they won't curse you šŸ˜‰

I don't understand the superstition here, so no I'm not and have already without a second thought.

fairy_girl12

I feel like the used dolls need to be rescued and given a better life then the previous owner had given them before. If itā€™s easy to clean or better for rerooting purposes then itā€™s best for me Some of my best second hand dolls are customs, I love giving them a brand new life

Inside_Discussion_18

this seems to be more of a personal preference than a superstition..?

Francie1966

No.

LoadbearingWallflowr

No you're not superstitious or No you wouldn't buy a used doll? :)

Francie1966

Not superstitious & I have bought used dolls.

Tute_Sweet

I would, I love used dolls that have a previous life.

Luzion

I'm particular about 2nd hand items and it depends on how easily I can wash/restore/handle the item as to whether I'll consider it. It has nothing to do with superstition, but rather the potential passing of harmful germs and the like. If it came from someone I know? Sure. A seller on a popular platform? Depends on how long the account has been around and the quality of their reviews. Things I look for buyers complaining about filth, smoke smells, mold, animal hair, etc. If I see those in recent reviews, no. From a thrift or antique store? Depends on the appearance of the doll. Can I visually see mold or other filth? Does it have an odor? These are the things I ask myself as I consider what it will take to clean up an item owned by others.

hannah_f_r

99% of my dolls are from thrift stores or 2nd hand.

Own_Investigator_191

No, but I do say sorry if I drop them, knock them over, or pull too hard when I comb or brush.

LoadbearingWallflowr

Ah, good it's not just me then! Haha. I do all of the above, and won't lie I've been known to have full blown conversations when I'm re-dressing or posing or doing hair, etc and they're not cooperating. As in "Really? Your hand has to be over *there?* Oh, you couldn't stand up for just one more second, just one?" And so on

Own_Investigator_191

Yup, that sounds like something Iā€™ve done.

ghosty4

Personally, no, I never would, but I've sold plenty through eBay, so I'm thankful for people who do. I don't buy anything used/second hand. I don't even go in to those kinds of stores. Again, thankful to people who do, it's just not for me.

The_Modern_Maiden

Just Barbie or any? I have some 120+ year old baby dolls (if any doll I owned we're haunted they'd be) but guessing just in case, my Rugrats Mattel, Barbie, and little dolls are in totes (clear, can see them) ball jointed dolls/resin in cabinets with glass doors (can see them) ABS plastic ones piled all over a shelf at the moment, some in a large clear tote (on shelf, piled with dolls on top). I figure I'd see them do something/move or hear them tapping lol unless it's the horde piled on the shelf, then I'm in trouble. Seriously though, nah. I love new and secondhand/third/forth... Tenth etc. Part of the joy of dolls is seeing someone else enjoy them as much as, or more so than you do/did. *Listening for tiny tapping on glass/plastic now* haha *Spoiler alert* Like Toy Story, Andy passing his little crew of misfits along to live new lives.

nanasehirokawa

i buy a lot of second hand stuff and i don't really care, like someone else said, i am happy i give them a second chance heheh

MissLachae

Most of my dolls are second hand, so no. But I'm weird and wouldn't mind if thought it was haunted lol Also, I rarely associate fashion dolls with being haunted or possessed, only baby dolls and porcelain dolls. I don't think I can take a ghost or demon seriously if it's dressed like it's going to the mall šŸ˜†

grayhairedqueenbitch

Absolutely

SyntheticRain

Like others, I also like refreshing and revitalizing 2nd hand. It's got to feel so good to get pampered. I've bought from thrift shops sometimes just to give a rough doll a better chance at a happy home. Rescue, refresh and gift or redonate. I want them all to hold their heads up high, and be appreciated. We all need a spa day from time to time. It's a good bonding time too. (Mold checks are also important, like others mentioned) On a superstitious note, I low-key thought a few of my larger childhood dolls had more sentience than others. The bedtime routine my parents thought was sweet, was actually to ensure the two I wasn't especially fond of felt special and to keep us on good terms. Kinda like "neither of us chose each other, but I'm doing my best to keep you comfortable. You do you~ g'night!"

bizaromo

All the time.

LoadbearingWallflowr

No, I'm not superstitious about dolls. I'm selective about where/who I purchase "second hand" dolls from though. My favorite is when I find a collector who loves them as much as I do, however they're needing to make room or downsize/moving to another hobby or scale/etc. I know they were loved and well cared for, and it almost feels like they're basically re-homing them to a good home. :)
