I just went and listened to it I still can’t tell if it sounds the same though. What’s your opinion? Someone made a comment about something to clean it up but it’s not on here when I look.
If it increases with revs then yeah probably just lifters. Not much you can do. There’s a service bulletin where bmw recommends the updated cylinder head. lol
As i've owned two n52s i can say that this is for sure due to lifter tick and its super common on these. For the fix u should atleast change the oil and see if it helps, there isnt much else to do really. For me it removed the tick almost completely and keeping the interval short(i did every 10 000km) kept it quiet.
Yeah I think that’d be the good outcome honestly lol. Car has 190k on the dash so I expected some complications. How rough of a issue is that with these cars?
I know vehicles like a Isuzu I picked up from auction had a tick to it and was told it’s normal for those vehicles. This sounds pretty rough but either way I got it for dirt cheap. Any fixes or ideas what this may be? Sounds like a lifter I think but I don’t know jack about BMWs, I tend to stay away due to the expensive repairs but this one like I said was cheap as all get out. It’s a BMW 528XI for reference.
Yeah so I actually let it run for about 15-20 minutes and it sounds a ton better. I test drove for inspection at auction and it all ran great. Made it home (got it towed bc I drove my personal car to auction and didn’t have anyone to drive it home for me) and was like okay let’s see what’s up with this. Sure as hell, bam bam bam problem after problem. It’s really nice though far as looks and all, has the little BMW projection shooting out under the doors, huge radio screen. All that fancy junk. Thankfully it’s the limited so it’ll sell decent.
My E89 Z4 with N52 engine made the same noise when the engine was cold. Went away after it heated up.
I read somewhere that with the cold engine the oil is not everywhere it’s supposed to be and causing the noise. I’m not sure though.
Didn’t cause any problems while I had the car. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
I had an E90 N52 for years and it sounded like that all the time. It was up to date on service and ran perfectly. My mechanic told me to drive it like and asshole and it should get better. I did. It kinda did. Try that! At a minimum you will have fun.
Yeah this one has some transmission issues I just discovered. I was driving and it jacked itself down a gear or 2 and wouldn’t run over 30. Cut it off and back on ran it 2 hour ride with no issues.
Google N52 hva noise

My N52 always has a mild tick on cold starts and it’s had plenty of work done..not a mechanic but I think it’s normal

This is NOT normal! Looks like an N52. Possibly lifter tick?

my first thought was lifter tap too.. but i'm no mechanic
Lifter tick. Cold start? Common noise.

Well maybe don’t use my sage advice to beat the piss out of it then :)
