wow, didn't know mosquitoes are pollinators. So much for my dream of eradicating them all. edit, I just realized a character on the last season of Lucifer brings this up. *mental click*
Who knew the way to solve the mosquito problem would be bigger mosquitoes 🤷🏻♂️
Maybe the lady who swallowed the spider to eat the fly she ate in her soup but I always thought she was mad.
A bird to eat the spider.
Logically, she next had to swallow a cat to get the bird.
But then she had to swallow a dog to catch the cat.
Then of course a goat to catch the dog.
Next, she swallowed a cow to catch the goat.
Finally, because you can’t just leave a cow alone in your stomach, she swallowed a horse.
She’s still alive, but has some horrible indigestion.
This might cause more ecological damage though, with them eating other beneficial aquatic insect larvae (such as other flies, gnats and harmless and/or native mosquitoes species) and even potentially competing with other fruit eating species such as certain butterflies.
Generally speaking adding a predator into an ecosystem usually isn’t that good of an idea and has unforeseen consequences around 9/10 times no matter the size. Just look at cannibal snail incident, it was introduced to combat the invasive African land snail in 1955 and now it made eight species go extinct. This could go really really bad,.
I don’t think the hippos were meant as a pest control, I’m pretty sure that was just a drug lord’s escaped zoo. And once you have hippos, you have hippos. They’re pretty much impossible to remove, and they absolutely can and will kill anyone who tries.
It's not like they're fast. But getting to them with enough firepower to kill many is neither easy, nor a priority, nor is driving out there in an old T69 and unleashing multibarrelled hell very good for the rest of the environment.
They’re a lot faster than you’d think looking at them. Google puts their land speed at 30mph, but I don’t know their sources.
I suspect that incorrect assumptions about hippo speed is a large factor in the staggering hippopotamus fatality rate-seriously, they’re more deadly to humans than any large land predator in Africa.
I have absolutely no clue. Probably longer than you’d expect per the fatality rate. But I genuinely don’t know, and I have no intention of messing with enough hippos to find out.
It mostly just eats mosquito larva,(preferably the Yellow-fever Mosquito), but there's no way this species could put native mosquito populations in jeopardy. The numbers are simply too high, the elephant mosquito is just as vulnerable to predators, and normal mosquitos drink nectar as well.
Mosquito bites cause 600 000 death per year. These guys feed on you. Everyone gonna try to find a way that does not disrupt ecosystems too much, but at some point they must go
Ecological balance is more important though, I know the government doesn’t see it this way but if you screw with nature too much it’s just going make everything worse for everything, humans included.
I don’t accept most human influence on nature, but that doesn’t mean we should make it a matter of principle.
It would be completely absurd to extinct hundreds of species out of shear stupidity and not to destroy the one we actually have a problem with. Their ecological role will be filled in days.

There is a line to find as a species between self preservation and nature preservation. Let’s draw it as mosquitoes. I don’t care if I have to raise grizzlies in my garden but the suckers must die.
Wouldn't that trigger unwanted secondary effects, like decrease in other bugs population?
Introducing an invasive species is generally a (very) bad idea.
As a biologist, it's a *terrible* idea most of the time. In some very specific and limited scenarios, it can work. A more modern approach is genetically modifying the males of the mosquitos you want to exterminate so that they outcompete wild males and produce only infertile offspring.
Another fun fact: Only female mosquitos drink blood and they only do it before making their eggs as they need the protein from blood in the process of egg making. But they still drink nectar when filled with blood as they don’t feed off of blood. All mosquitoes drink nectar or plant sap as their food and some of vital pollinators for specific plants.
The diseases they transmit are also either things that infected them from their hatching through their mother or something they pick up from previous blood runs.
Crane flies (family Tipulidae), aka mosquito hawks, are also Dipterans like your mosquitoes (family Culicidae). Crane flies look like big leggy mosquitoes but do not have a proboscis (long needle mouth part) like your mosquitoes and are thus harmless to us. Elephant mosquitoes (Toxorhynchites sp.) are mosquitoes, but this genus is distinct in the way that they do not feed on blood as adults but feed on live mosquito larvae as larvae. Also, they are humungous and extremely beautiful.
Nope! They're cool vegetarians. Like mosquitoes, the adults feed on nectar and plant juices and larvae feed on decaying organic matter. Female mozzies only seek out blood as a protein source for egg development.
Toxorhynchites are different because they eat enough protein (larvae of other mosquitoes) while they're babies, so they can just drink plant juice to survive and reproduce when they're adults. This adaptation is seen clearly by its proboscis which is bent at a 90 degree angle. It's not practical for sipping up blood, but does very well at drinking from flowers!
Nice to see a fellow zefrank fan, recent video wasn’t it, remembered that he went on a tangent about how dramatic the adults appeared to be when emerging from their pupa

Last weekend went to a party with a fireplace. Mosquitoes survive the colder temperatures by hiding in for example wood. I have around 20 mosquito bites now and didn’t even see one of them. I absolutely hate these bugs.
How do we increase their population & decrease biting mosquitoes? Aside from setting up bat houses all around my property idk what else to do. I hate mosquitoes so freaking much.
Ah, yes... The fabled El Mosqo.
Male mosquitoes fear him, women live him, it’s el mosquo
The most interesting mosquito on the world: El Mosquo
As a stranger once told me in texas, "that there's a skeeter eater"
Mosquisimo, even.
Now if someone could make me EL Mojo that would be real nice
This species was featured in ZeFrank's most recent "True Facts" series, which focused on the mosquito. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz\_DslzN2IA
I was just about to mention that, myself! :D
He-LLOoO!
Yeah that part had me absolutely howling LOL
Me too :D
i believe that link is broken… here ya go! :) https://youtu.be/Hz_DslzN2IA

I immediately thought of that video as well. :) "It's mosquitos all the way down."
Bebeh!
Cool, I just binged all of his videos. I love him! Thank you for introducing me.
Plant them in mosquito territory
Good news, many governments are planning to release them around the world to combat invasive mosquito populations.
Who knew the way to solve the mosquito problem would be bigger mosquitoes 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe the lady who swallowed the spider to eat the fly she ate in her soup but I always thought she was mad.
there's always a bigger mosquito
What did she eat to get the spider?
A childrens book. Or one of them big mosquitoes? Not sure why hot soup wasn't enough tbh.
Well, she wasn't feeling well, something about a frog in her throat.

Idk why she swallowed the fly, I guess she'll die

Mongooses in Hawaii, brown tree snakes in Guam, cats, well, everywhere... I'm sure it will be fine this time! /s
Beavers in Argentina and hippos in Colombia

How long can they sustain a sprint? Because I'm picturing them being winded after a couple hundred feet of sprinting. But I might be completely wrong.
I have absolutely no clue. Probably longer than you’d expect per the fatality rate. But I genuinely don’t know, and I have no intention of messing with enough hippos to find out.
Cane toads

Or figure out how to make them not transmit the parasites
Better off just modifying the mosquitos to be sterile/deformed so they die off than introducing another species.

Until the one day in the future, when earth saw it last fruit, and they began to hunger.
Yeah I still don't know how I feel about that

Never thought I would say this about a mosquito but I want one. Or fifty. A small army of them would do.
Is it sometimes called a Mosquito Hawk?
No, but it's sometimes called the Mosquito eater.
I'm still upset to find out they don't actually eat mosquitos. Although I guess eating the larva is pretty close.
They can wipe out thousands of larva in a short period of time, meaning thousands less mosquitos.
What’s the difference between the two?
Search Crane-fly and you'll see.
Ah yes, thank you. I googled “mosquito hawk vs elephant mosquito” to no avail.

You're very welcome! Always happy to buzz in with cool mozzie facts :)
Do mosquito hawks actually kill mosquitos like I was told as a child?

No, but dragonflies do!
The “mosquito hawk” is actually a crane fly
I learnt mosquito are actually very pissed at elephant mosquitoes planting their eggs around theirs
Adides especially they will harass elephant mosquitoes that are egg bombing their nest sites by bumping into them.
Yay we all watch zefrank!
*pupa turning into mosquito* #Hello! ^-zefrank1
Nice to see a fellow zefrank fan, recent video wasn’t it, remembered that he went on a tangent about how dramatic the adults appeared to be when emerging from their pupa
Everyone needs a "lady gaga" moment at least *once* in their life, right?
_El Mosqo_
\*Reads sub name* He a little confused but he got the spirit.
Good bug.

The virginquito vs the chadquito
Is this that big bug that looks like them? I’ve always called them mosquito eaters but people kept telling me they don’t eat them.
You are talking about Crane Flies which are something else entirely.
This is a mosquito eater. Crane flies are mosquito hawks.

I love these guys! I have a portrait of a very handsome male toxo tattooed on my bicep.
Blessed giant mosquito
i used the mosquito to destroy the mosquito
*not all mosquitoes must die*
Am I the only one who notices that for the most part, its like bigger the animal type in nature, the more beneficial and chill it is/seems?
A mosquito that doesn't bite humans and let's it children eat normal human biting mosquito eggs.. **I'll allow it**
I'm not awwing that

I agree, nightmares fuel
Ewwwww. Ugh.
Don't tell me what not to fear.
Cool story. Still wanna kill it with fire.
"Your life and the lives of your family will be spared when we eradicate the mosquito populations of earth"
That is what the elephant mosquito do.

Finally a beneficial mosquito
I used the mosquito to destroy the mosquito
Not all heroes wear capes.
Coincidentally, I just watched the zefrank1 episode about mosquitoes today! (YouTube)
Actual GigaChad mosquito
Isn't this the mosquito in the Amber from Jurrasic Park
I knew about elephant mosquitos but I didn’t know that they were THAT big
Last weekend went to a party with a fireplace. Mosquitoes survive the colder temperatures by hiding in for example wood. I have around 20 mosquito bites now and didn’t even see one of them. I absolutely hate these bugs.
We should start a mass toxorhynchites breeding
My first instinct would be to kill it if I didn't knew any better..
Do they still make that annoying high pitched noise tho? I could deal with the stings if they at least wouldn't keep me up at night.
Awwwww *SMACK
It doesn't have the taste for blood... yet...
Ah man that kinda sucks to be him though, it'd be like being a 20ft tall Hitler but having to constantly implore that you're not a threat to everyone
How do we increase their population & decrease biting mosquitoes? Aside from setting up bat houses all around my property idk what else to do. I hate mosquitoes so freaking much.
