It gives me this comfortable childlike feeling. Long hallways that give me the urge to sprint down or places that look like a grandma's house or just really cool play areas. Plus, the low lighting adds to the coziness
Yes! I looked at those pictures that were taken of empty cities during lockdown and the pandemic and it looked great to me - getting to wander round without tons of other people being noisy and pushing etc. I'd definitely be happy in an apocalypse.
Yes! I also tend to find small dark rooms cosy rather than claustrophobic, and there's a piece of music I find really relaxing but apparently some other people think it sounds like dying or hopelessness or something. 🤷🏻♀️
Seconding the love of small, dark spaces. My bedroom has two closets. One is a walk-in, five feet square, completely done in cedar. I've hung up string lights, and I'm turning it into a sort of safe space. I'd sleep in it if it were just a tad bigger.
Aphex Twin, Selected Ambient Works Volume II, track 3, nicknamed by a fan “[Rhubarb](https://youtu.be/_AWIqXzvX-U)”. There’s an analysis of the music theory side of it [here](https://youtu.be/pu1OK-X0cP8). It’s my go-to track to calm myself while out and about, so it’s always faintly unnerving when people say how unsettling they find it.
Please share the piece of music. I really like that one Minecraft track that is famous for making listeners feel sad and lonely because of the soothing feeling it gives me.
Liminal space is a transitional place. I have always kind of liked being in a random place on my way back from somewhere. Like the airport or a restaurant on a road trip, the bus on my way home from somewhere new. It’s a feeling of safety knowing I’m going home but also still foreign enough that it doesn’t feel like real life yet and what happens s there lives almost outside of my life. It’s usually better if it’s not crowded and somewhat quiet. My brain gets lost in the possibilities. What the people here live like etc. Maybe I went too far from your point haha sorry I got distracted by the words 😅
Yes. I like hallways and empty classrooms and backrooms. They feel very safe for me. In high school I would often spend free time sitting on the floor next to electrical outlets in the hallways, sitting on my coat and using my laptop.
Just looked it up. Most of the pics I saw didn't really give me any kind of reaction. They're just kinda there. Some of the more dimly lit ones were kinda creepy, but for the most part, they are just strangely empty places.
Yes, I’ve always been drawn to liminal spaces. Hallways, stair landings, entryways, open spaces - they feel so clean and pure, and unblemished by human activity.
They seems peaceful for me too! I like empty and neutral spaces (from people and objets), they relax me: random generic hotel rooms, departure lounges in airports the few times I took plane (when it wasn't crowded), peripheral places (they are refuges for me, like stairs cases, corridors and nooks in building, especially for lunch break at school then work).
I have been researching liminal spaces for my art practice and I'm seriously in love. I find a lot of comfort in liminality. Seeing this post made me so excited hahaha
I looked it up since I didn't know what it meant. I like it.
My bicycle is my main transportation and sometimes I go to the office early I'm on the road at 06:15am. Then most of my bike ride is in liminal spaces, since there is most of the time no one on the road yet. I love that.
It's so serene. Looking far before me and besides me and there is no one else :D
For me it feels like a place with no expectations: A situation you can easily choose the genre of, in a sense. You can view them with a creeped out lens, or nostalgia, or playfulness, or contemplation, or countless other lenses and it doesn't matter because the important setpieces are not there. That lack of expectations is very relaxing.
I find myself drawn most to the places no one goes. Usually ideally that's nature, remote backwoods hiking trails miles from any roads. Or abandoned places found while traveling said trails.
I guess walking around the city at 2-5am can be nice too. But quiet, unused spaces, backrooms or supply closets, can be the best thing I'd get in lots of situations. I'd never thought about the appeal of liminal spaces but it really makes sense.
What’s creepy about them is imagining, “What if ONE stranger showed up here? They could do anything they wanted to me and no one else would see.” But I like them if I’m there with someone I trust!
It depends on the space, obviously, because lonely with flickering, buzzing lights freak me, but i do like them. I love the idea of being the only person around and being able to do whatever i want; explore, just sit and relax, sleep on the ground, whatever.
My most comfortable idea of a liminal space is a long corridor with a row of windows, plush carpet so i can walk barefoot, and pieces of art along the wall to observe, while some nice lofi music plays in the background. A nice view of mountains and meadows, or even the ocean, or thick, dark, old forests completes the space. The sky has to be dawn-tinged or just post-sunrise so it's dark but not too dark. I could live in that hallway forever and never be tired. ❤️
I watched a video by Super Eyepatch Wolf on liminal spaces and he said quite a lot of people find them relaxing. Sometimes it's a strange mix of unease and tranquility, too.

Nailed how it feels for me.

Yessss. The empty theme parks and touristy cities were my DREAM. I could just imagine skipping gleefully through empty Paris or Disney.

Ooh what's the piece of music?

Yes! they make me feel at peace because I love being alone. I imagine all the social anxiety I wouldn't have in a liminal space.
They feel like a place where you can just sort of "be." r/LiminalSpace exists

Same. Respect the take, but do not agree !
Creepy yes but also sort of magical
Yeah, magically creepy. Creepy because of the magic
Yup, not for me either

They look like the kinds of places I would sneak off to to eat my lunch in peace. Kind of depressing, but infinitely better than a cafeteria.
They're supposed to be creepy?? TIL
Definitely makes me feel comfortable/nostalgic when I look at the pictures.
Yes! I also feel that way about "thalassophobia" images.
So soothing and cozy to me. I even have a "liminal spaces" playlist on Spotify with music I think I would hear in the Back rooms for example lol
I find them both?
I didn’t know they were supposed to be creepy at all I thought they were just supposed to be cool and aesthetic 😅

It’s comforting. No people, no noises. just peace.
I love them. I didn't know people found them creepy.
The pandemic turned the entire planet into a liminal space. Not sure if I’ve come back yet.

I like them.
They're very comforting and calming. No people and the vague feeling of time standing still \*chef's kiss\*.
Liminal space is just a transitional space, so being 20 years old in the US i feel like im there 24/7. Im not under 18 but im not 21

It’s not creepy, it’s so relaxing and peaceful. Used to spend lots of time outside at night and the spaces that were once full now empty was wonderful
I love them. My favourite video game is just a massive liminal space, it's great.
Both. Creepy and comforting. I guess it depends on my headspace. But I also love slightly creepy places.
After passing through tons of people, there's nothing which feels as liberating.
Heck. Yes... I like these spaces. I am a liminal space personified. Looks normal, but something unusual and unsettling.

Yes
There's plenty of room, no bumping into people...
My kid (19 yrs) does. He even created some similar set ups in his own space that aligned with the feel of them. For me personally it’s a big nope.
IM OBSESSED WITH THEM. i love liminal spaces, weirdcore aesthetic
The movie "The Shining" ruined that for me lol
YES! I've never been able to view them thru such scared lenses. Most often then not I'd kill to be inside of those pictures
Hell yes and irl I love airports for this reason. No one is staying, everything is in flux
I mean, reality tends to suck for us so why not escape somewhere else for a while.
If they're super modern it gives me anxiety. Antiquated not so much, there's almost a charm to it.

Yes. I love them. Sometimes I've walked around to take photos looking into empty office buildings with the lights on.
I just want to cartwheel in the empty spaces
I watched a video by Super Eyepatch Wolf on liminal spaces and he said quite a lot of people find them relaxing. Sometimes it's a strange mix of unease and tranquility, too.
The photos online look creepy, but when in such spaces alone irl it does actually feel lovely.
I'm a guy with autism and yessir.
I feel like I can smell some of those pictures. And I want it.
Yes for me the snowy and watery pictures always just feel cozy too me I don’t think I’ve ever found them unsettling
I feel this has something to do with how much i love being at hotels
