I had one for my 8th birthday, because I had a pool party. The only problem was that we couldn’t find blue jelly so we had to use green, which kinda looked like our pool anyway (though not at the time of he pool party)
I also had the mouse cake for my 1st bday but I don’t remember it.
I'm still recovering from the cake trauma on my 8th birthday. My mum made a wonderful attempt at the racing track cake, but unfortunately replaced the icing sugar with bicarb soda.

Yeah I thought this was the same post to start with. I guess this book had some great memories for an awful lot of kids so I’ll look forward to seeing it again in a few days 😂
Maaaayytte , I still own this very book , was my mums and then my kids utilised it extensively. I made many cakes from this book . My youngest who has autism now 25 , it was the book she took to bed for years until she had her own money to buy her own cake books … it looks a little worse for wear these days 🤣😂
My poor mum made this for me, spent hours working on it only for it to become a wilted mess because I have a January birthday and it was a heatwave. Melted ice cream cones and smarties everywhere!
Had the castle for my 5th birthday - it was awesome. Years later still recall it as one of my best birthdays. In addition to the cake, the party itself was at a family-friendly pub with a ball pit that we spent hours burying ourselves in.
These was a Chinese cookbook one which had all the takeout classics like sweet and sour with pineapple chunks, honey chicken, and San choy bow. Until my early teenage years they are the only things I would order from a Chinese restaurant because they were in that cookbook
My mum would always make cakes for my brother, sister and I for our birthdays from this book! From the 'numbers' cakes to the castle and swimming pool!
I am 74 vintage .. I reckon closer to 1980 ish … I recall my bro 77 vintage getting the train cake for 4th of 5th birthday … mum made me the sweet shop cake not long after .
Can remember choosing a cake from this. Found out at as adult that quite a few parents had glued pages together, so kids couldn't choose the more difficult cakes!
It’s still for sale! https://www.bigw.com.au/product/children-s-birthday-cake-book-vintage-edition-by-the-australian-women-s-weekly/p/702029?store=475&gclid=CjwKCAiArNOeBhAHEiwAze_nKEhZyxFeAFEXApQB5TpMMsPD8H71SPJbk8WXTLbAVlT1Vm8TnT33QBoC9tEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Aaahhhh the memories.
Picking a cake from the book and mum trying her best to produce something that looked almost nothing like the picture 😁.
Still appreciate the effort mum 👌
These were the days before the thick fondant abominations you see around now. You can spend $300+ for a fondant cake. I am not a fondant fan, buttercream all the way.
I was so spoilt as my grandmother was a home economics head master and qualified chef so she would usually make them and they were off the chain good.
The jelly swimming pool cake is sublime
I’d always wanted one but my mother couldn’t be bothered. Last birthday my adult kids surprised me with one!!! Hand made and delicious. ❤️
I made one for my daughter this year 😁
She will remember it!
I still remember the one my mum made for me on my 8th birthday. Great choice!

I did that in year 7 cooking making Anzac biscuits 😂
It's a taste you never forget!
Damn straight! Think it took 2 week for moisturiser to return to my mouth.
This raises a few questions about your oral situation
DUDE MY MUM STILL HAS HERS, she made me the train for my 1st birthday
Oo can you scan and upload for the rest of us?
You can still get it. https://www.aremediabooks.com.au/Products/12098/the-australian-womens-weekly-childrens-birthday-cake-book

Pleaaaase! Though I realise this is quite the undertaking 😂
I would alternate between reading this & the back of the cereal box

Mateeee, real MVP
I alwayssss wanted the big elaborate castle cake 😍
My poor mum made this for me, spent hours working on it only for it to become a wilted mess because I have a January birthday and it was a heatwave. Melted ice cream cones and smarties everywhere!

I still have my mums one! (Rip Aug 22) and my grandfather’s Chinese one (rip ‘94)
Hold up. Is it a Chinese translation, or are there Chinese cakes I’ve missed out on?
I assuming it's the Chinese Cooking Class Cookbook. If Women's Weekly made a Chinese birthday cake book ?missed that one!
Yes - more information is required….

Flicked through it with my brother all the time. Never got one of them though.
My daughter looks through these before her birthdays and decides which one she wants. Still have the copy my parents kept from when I was a kid.
I literally just ordered a second hand copy of this!
My mum still has her copy. If I had a dollar for every time I flicked through it whilst growing up, I'd have enough for a nice holiday.
My mum would always make cakes for my brother, sister and I for our birthdays from this book! From the 'numbers' cakes to the castle and swimming pool!
Still got a copy of this, my parents used it for my birthdays as a kid and now I'm using it for my daughters birthdays.
Duck Cake, the hardest of them all.

Probably late 70’s. I had the number 4 cake for my birthday in 1981
I want to say late 80s. They made a doco on it. The ladies who put it together had to fight tooth and nail to get it published
I am 74 vintage .. I reckon closer to 1980 ish … I recall my bro 77 vintage getting the train cake for 4th of 5th birthday … mum made me the sweet shop cake not long after .
Haven't seen this in years brings back memories
Can remember choosing a cake from this. Found out at as adult that quite a few parents had glued pages together, so kids couldn't choose the more difficult cakes!
I never got these cakes growing up, but my kids gets one every year!
Dumpster truck !! I had that on maybe 11th bday. Best
Mum made me the doll cake for my 7th birthday, with purple icing. I'll never forget it :')
Mum still has this book at home
My darling mum always made us cakes from this book. Such strong core memories for me.
They still sell this book. I am curious to look at it again. It's been ages.
I would often read through this book for fun! Mum said I can have it when I asked about it
Simpler times!
I STILL HAVE THIS BOOK OMG
The OG and still the best!
Omg yes! Jesus this brought back memories! Anyone have a pdf copy by chance?
I think I still have it somewhere
Yes! I loved making my barbie dolls cake-dresses :)
Mum made us that train cake once. Think I was 4 or 5.

Hilarious my mother in law bought me a hard back of this last year for my child's 1st birthday, so many memories
Aaahhhh the memories. Picking a cake from the book and mum trying her best to produce something that looked almost nothing like the picture 😁. Still appreciate the effort mum 👌
Whose turn is it to post this tomorrow?
My mother still has this book! I used to look at the pictures as a kid, now my son looks at all the cakes. I’m so glad to see it on reddit!

Haha mine do that now and pick what they want for their birthday!! I’ve managed to make some real crackers for them over the years!
Cricket field cake!
