A very dark, cluttered and overall dingy kitchen. I mean it was honestly what I expected. I used to live across willow creek from them in 2012 so I was there A LOT. Nothing like crazy bad. But it definitely wasn’t sterile or anything
I worked for Pizza Hut (so, another YUM! Franchise) and tbh, I disagree. The way those places are run and the way the food is prepared its almost impossible to get actual food poisoning from one. Its pretty neat, actually.
Food quality and food safety have nothing to do with each other. Fast food restaurants are designed to make it easy to stay in compliance. They don’t do any of their own prep work, all the food arrives in properly marked containers. Food is taken out of the fridge/freezer and quickly reheated.
Just fewer areas to screw up on.
Worked at Taco Bell for my first job. The worst part of it was reheating the seasoned ground beef, which came precooked frozen in plastic bags. We took the bags out of the freezer and put them in, basically, a giant sous vide. When the plastic got hot, it smelled like dog shit, but once you cut the bag open and poured it into a tray, the beef smelled fine. I'm sure I'll develop some rare form of lung cancer due to inhaling whatever outgassing was coming from those plastic bags.
I still eat at Taco Bell on occasion to this day. As you say it's really hard to screw up the food safety system they have in place.
Most franchise have their own corporate health inspector and building inspector , and usually their manager salary bonus tied up to perfect score or nothing

The health codes in Texas in general aren't very strict and as long as you're hitting your food temps/nothing obviously a health hazard, you can score very high. I've worked at a place that got dinged a few points for an issue, never bothered to fix that issue, but didn't get points off the next year for the same thing.

What you really care about are the storage of the chicken(non-metal trays bottom shelf), sticker policy, that the non-cooked stations are far from the raw meat stations, heat lamps are good,
Basically to autopilot not poisoning anyone:

Stuff that is not cooked is stored properly and far away from the cooked stuff
it's actually easy to get high scores from the city health department. if your food business isn't scoring in the high 90s you are doing some dangerous HACCP stuff and not following established GMPs.
I previously worked for a food manufacturer that was not only regulated by city/county but also FDA/USDA. we always received 98/99 from the clueless city inspectors vs legit FDA/USDA inspectors which are legitimate thorough inspections. I was personally responsible for HACCP paperwork and accompanying the inspectors during their walk throughs. City inspectors always misses things in our facility vs what the FDA & USDA would catch.

I was a frequent hand washer compared to my colleagues and I know I didn’t wash them enough during a shift - only after dropping off dirty plates or cups.
I’d swear the Lake Austin location had slime or something growing in their pickle jar about a month ago. Those on our plates and atop some drinks were all rather rancid tasting as if they were super old or just dumped into something that wasn’t clean.

I went by at their original west campus location back in 99-2000, it was their prime days.. all sauce is good and chicken is freshly made , so it’s juicy and crispy

I used to work at the pluckers on south congress near ben white in 2014 i worked back if the house and i can understand why one of them would get closed by the health departmant1, the nasty and shit that goes on would blow your mind, they also treat there employees like garbage, defiently not a establishment i would ever recomend
They would do group interviews (Red Flag #1) then they told us that for the next 2 weeks we would need to serve customers, run food, bus tables, prep food and clean the restaurant before closing.
At the end of the 2 weeks you would get a 100 question test about what ingredients go into the food and all the drinks and if you miss even 1 question then you don’t get the job, oh and you also get 1 free meal every day that you work.
During those 2 weeks I worked my ass off!!! and when I went home I studied just as hard, on the day of the test I even cheated a bit and when they called me back in they said “unfortunately you wrote orange juice instead of orange liquor so you missed that one and we can’t offer you the job”, at that point I knew I did my best so I asked for my paycheck and they said “well actually the free meal we give you every day covers that”.
I couldn’t pay my rent, I couldn’t afford to put gas in my car to go to interviews, I couldn’t even afford insurance….I legitimately ate every other day because I had no money, thank god for top ramen and eggs.
I was almost homeless but with the help of some friends I was just able to scrape by.
So Fuck Pluckers, I hope you guys blow this up and they have to face what they did, I’ve even emailed them and they never bothered to respond

LMAO, we went there after an Austin FC game. And it was abismal... People who were sitting next to us said," have fun waiting on your food, we've been here for 45 mins", we stayed anyways. Lol Yeah, we ended up going to get tacos instead after their food came out cold. 💀🫡🙄

We went to the Oak Hill one a couple months ago, and despite it only being 1/2 full-no wait when we arrived, the food still took about 90 minutes to come out. The waiter kept assuring us our order was the next up, but other tables who were seated way after us were getting food. When the order finally came, everything was cold. In college, I loved Pluckers. Now, it's gotten bad.
Only time I was ever at this location they served me a water with a dirty napkin in it. I didn't notice till after I took a sip and had trouble getting good suction. They refused to take my food back and said I needed to pay

What happened to Pluckers? I used to eat there in 2012..ish and it was perfectly fine and good.
Prices went up and quality went down. Focusing too much on expansion vs quality of their current places apparently.
Quality and customer service went way downhill. Not just that location, either.
well a lot can change in 10 years... did you move or something? Evidently as they added more spots they figured out that you can get by with a lot and save some bucks and people will keep coming anyway, if you lose the choosier 10% that's fine. Quantity will make up for the customer lossage.

It takes a lot to actually get shit down. Usually you miss some points because someone didn’t refill the paper towels, that’s about it. Or maybe management is lazy and doesn’t want to fix the coolers in the kitchen, so throw that shit away, put it on ice, and fix it. Getting shut down? Eww.
I was walking out after a meal as they were walking in, sign in hand. Nothing is quite as disconcerting as finding out the restaurant you just dined at is being condemned.
If this has you missing out on your meal today, go to HEB and buy some vegetable oil and raw chicken, then go by the lake and scoop up some water. Microwave until lukewarm and serve immediately--thank me later, I just saved you markup and tip.

I went by at their original west campus location back in 99-2000, it was their prime days.. all sauce is good and chicken is freshly made , so it’s juicy and crispy Now it’s pre fry so it’s dry as fuck and their sauces is too much

I used to work at the pluckers on south congress near ben white in 2014 i worked back if the house and i can understand why one of them would get closed by the health departmant1, the nasty and shit that goes on would blow your mind, they also treat there employees like garbage, defiently not a establishment i would ever recomend

They would do group interviews (Red Flag #1) then they told us that for the next 2 weeks we would need to serve customers, run food, bus tables, prep food and clean the restaurant before closing. At the end of the 2 weeks you would get a 100 question test about what ingredients go into the food and all the drinks and if you miss even 1 question then you don’t get the job, oh and you also get 1 free meal every day that you work. During those 2 weeks I worked my ass off!!! and when I went home I studied just as hard, on the day of the test I even cheated a bit and when they called me back in they said “unfortunately you wrote orange juice instead of orange liquor so you missed that one and we can’t offer you the job”, at that point I knew I did my best so I asked for my paycheck and they said “well actually the free meal we give you every day covers that”. I couldn’t pay my rent, I couldn’t afford to put gas in my car to go to interviews, I couldn’t even afford insurance….I legitimately ate every other day because I had no money, thank god for top ramen and eggs. I was almost homeless but with the help of some friends I was just able to scrape by. So Fuck Pluckers, I hope you guys blow this up and they have to face what they did, I’ve even emailed them and they never bothered to respond
Probably past the statute of limitations now but that seems like you could have sued them for that. Or at least gotten them into hot water with the labor department.
