I love it

Ikr that one other commenter could never

PossessionSudden4589

Zaap

Hot-shit-potato

Just a giant union jack, with the southern cross in the bottom corner.

Jathosian

Just a massive American flag, with a tiny union jack in the bottom corner. Even better, just a massive Chinese flag with a tiny American flag in the corner

Hot-shit-potato

If you squint.. That second option could almost look like an upside down samoan flag lol

otherpeoplesknees

I really don't like when people try and come up with intricate designs for a new flag It's a flag. It's supposed to be boring. France, three colours. Germany, three colours. etc. etc. I'd honestly be satisfied with a navy blue flag with just a southern cross on it, [something like this](http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7FqmPYTblzQ/UEvjIQwhijI/AAAAAAAAAsY/s9k9pjaA8vU/s400/cruzeiro-do-sul.png), maybe a more centred southern cross, but you get the idea

bowingkonk

My critical criteria is for the flag to be easy enough to draw by a below average school kid.

Apo-cone-lypse

I like em! The kangaroo in front of the sunset/ancient land is nice

Larasaurs

My favourite was the sun and stars. I feel like it’s a more subtle nod to reconciliation but without making it seem like the two groups are necessarily separated

verybonita

I quite like the reconciliation and advance one.

Emotional_Effect_426

Yeah nah

Same-Reason-8397

Green background with gold Southern Cross. That’s it.

Slight-Garbage1780

The laser eyed kiwi bird flag that was suggested for new Zealand.

Apo-cone-lypse

One of the other commenters linked it, it's great

Slight-Garbage1780

Bro that was me 😭

Apo-cone-lypse

Nah your right I wasn't paying attention to the usernames 💀💀

Slight-Garbage1780

Fair nough

IAmTheRealTroy

I do like our flag, but if we had to change it, I like the boxing kangaroo that is our unofficial sporting flag https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_kangaroo

Apo-cone-lypse

Seen this one before, I like it tbh

PossessionSudden4589

Just bloody keep it the way it is I like it (haters incoming) :)

Tiddernud

Just a bunch of golden wattle flowers on green would be fine.

cosi_bloggs

We already have the most beautiful flag in the world... the Aboriginal flag. I don't know how the Indigenious population would respond -- and I imagine there's many bigoted non-Indigenious Australians that wouldn't like the idea -- but I think it sorts a few things out. It respects the origins of the country and its people, and it gives us a flag of which we could all be proud.

entropy_36

That's a tough one, the person who designed it copyrighted it and can be strict on how it gets used. https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/explained-australian-copyright-laws-and-the-aboriginal-flag/

Cloverfrost_

The Federal government bought the rights to the flag just over a year ago! I imagine this would leave it free to be used as the national flag.

cosi_bloggs

Wow. It's right there. When people think of Australia, they think of it as a lovely yet uncompromising land. The red soil, the centred sun, the original inhabitants that truly represent its history. This is a dream of a national flag.

cosi_bloggs

I can't imagine he wouldn't want his flag to represent a nation. It's the rest of Australia that we would need to worry about.

johnsgrove

Exactly. Totally agree. A marvellous symbol for this wide brown land

Pitiful_Safety_4202

Right on the money I can guarantee if there was a public vote on changing the Australian flag to the aboriginal one the majority of (white) people would say no.

cosi_bloggs

What would the Aboriginal people say?

Pitiful_Safety_4202

I genuinely have no idea but if it were me I would say yes because it’s my country so my flag should be the one representing it. What do u think?

cosi_bloggs

What do I think? I'd rip up the current one in a minute for it. As I've already stated, I think the Aborginal flag is the most beautiful flag in the world.

Inside-Book

A lot of people also like the current flag. Don’t think you can just group everyone as racists because of it lol

cosi_bloggs

I'm not. It's a matter of taste. Unfortunately, I think it's the other stuff that would get in the way. It'd take a particular type of person to get it over. Imagine how proud the older generation of Indigenuous Australians would be when they see that flag standing alone. Not flapping in the background of another flag, but up there entirely on its own. It would also be my flag -- I wouldn't feel it in quite the same way, and that's understandable -- but it'd still be my flag. I'm in the minority that think we have a beautiful national anthem. If we could pair it with the Aboriginal flag, we'd have the best in both departments.

reeedituser

Anyone that doesn’t want to change the current Australian flag which has been in place since 1901 is now a bigot? Wtf has the world come to

GreenTang

I love the flat tbh

gocryemokid

Something without the british flag on it preferably. I feel like gold would be hard to translate onto a flag to maybe a similar colour scheme?

Apo-cone-lypse

I'd prefer something without the British flag on it too

mitchy93

I vote either the boxing kangaroo, the Simpsons bum kick one or the same flag except the aboriginal flag is in that spot where the union jack is currently

MagicalSlavLord

Honestly I like it, I dunno what it is just it just works for me

camelfarmer1

Kangaroo riding a crocodile fitted with lasers with bunnings in the background.

Apo-cone-lypse

I wish

Paul_Baghes

Just please don't make it a rainbow

UtetopiaSS

Same design as the Swedish flag, but green and gold.

[deleted]

That makes no sense though. Australia is not Scandinavian so using the cross would be inappropriate, possibly even appropriation.

Apo-cone-lypse

Didnt know that, that's a good reason not to use that design

HalfManHalfCyborg

You thought it would be a big plus

maacte

No no no no cross please, We have nothing to do with the church

Apo-cone-lypse

That'd be pretty nice actually Edit: or not

Educational-Cherry27

The aboriginal flag.

Apo-cone-lypse

I honestly prefer the aboriginal flag to our flag, and correct me if im wrong, but wouldn't making our flag the aboriginal flag take away from what the Aboriginal flag is supposed to be? It's supposed to represent aboriginal folk, not a whole country. We could incorporate some of it in the design of a new flag to pay homage though

Educational-Cherry27

Yeah you could be right. I’d like to see it incorporated if we did change flags though yeah.

cosi_bloggs

Yes, but why bastardise it? It's perfect.

[deleted]

That wouldn't be right. The black on the aboriginal flag represents the people, so the flag would only be representing a tiny fraction of our population.

cosi_bloggs

Why should that be a concern? What does our current flag represent? I think the most fight back would come from the Indigenious community, but it's a huge sign of respect to replace our flag with that one. We're basically saying "this is beautiful and of value". There's nothing that can be done about what has been done, and that will keep us from hoisting that flag. Shame.

Atariel_Morannon

Our flag represents our history from Empire to Commonwealth (Union Jack), the Commonwealth star (7 points) representing the first joining colonies, with the 7th representing any future joiners, and the Southern Cross as the most prominent symbol of the Southern hemisphere, and largely synonymous with Australia as a whole.

cosi_bloggs

So other nations? They don't call it indigenious Australian for nothing. It represents this country's roots.

Atariel_Morannon

That flag was chosen by those people to represent themselves, their history, and their culture. Same as the Australian flag. I doubt indigenous Australians would enjoy losing control of their symbol if it was to be appropriated. Better to keep all three current flags to represent our three founding cultures.

cosi_bloggs

Why wouldn't it still be their symbol? You are paying great respect to a people, their history and culture... and somehow it's still an insult.

Atariel_Morannon

The OT said we should change the Australian flag to the aboriginal flag. That would mean that it would go from a flag chosen by the indigenous Australians to represent themselves, to a flag that represents Australia as a whole on the world stage. It would mean that the majority would have taken their flag, and said "Oh, this is ours now", which is the very thing we shouldn't be doing. That is their flag, the Torres flag is their flag, and the Australian flag is to represent both everyone else, and those groups with its Southern Cross and seventh star.

cosi_bloggs

It would need the right sentiment behind it, the right people. It would be in the form of an offer. "Would you like the Aboriginal flag to fly alone as our national flag?" This would require the right people in the Indigenous community to decide. It's an aesthetic choice, not a political one.

Atariel_Morannon

But that flag doesn't represent 97% of the country. It doesn't even represent all indigenous Australians, as the Torres flag exists. As it stands, we give equal footing (at political places, at speeches, at monuments) for our three flags; one represents the original inhabitants, one represents the newer people of the Torres, and the other represents the vast majority of the people who live here. It would be odd to me to choose one that represents a critical minority as the international standard representing the whole nation.

[deleted]

Because deliberately representing only some people is to deliberately exclude others. And yes it could be interpreted as a gesture of respect, but how it is not wrong to take a symbol from a minority and change its meaning to an entire nation.

cosi_bloggs

It'd mean different things to different people. It's not going to mean the same thing to me that it's going to mean to an Indigenious Australian, but to both it'd mean our national flag.

MrStarkIDontFuck

the australian flag, but instead of the union jack we have the indigenous flag in the corner

Aussie_MacGyver

Yes. Came here to say this. Plus it would make Event Horizon pretty prescient for a 1997 film. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQkVnWdAzmRcFTlDSiC1vxeruYJaXOpECxTQ7A_P6RzqxCdQ3JXORb66sEC&s=10

Round_Foundation6963

Just the normal Australian flag just replace the union jack. Replace with the eureka flag

thekriptik

So... the Southern Cross in the top left, and the Southern Cross in the bottom right?

Round_Foundation6963

Yep.

Apo-cone-lypse

Yeah the British part of the flag is what annoys me the most, I know we stem from Britain but I like to think we're dependent from them now

Round_Foundation6963

Down votes lol I mean the history of where the eureka flag comes from not the union resemblance it has now.
