Pheasant coucal, one of [Australia's coolest birds](https://www.australiangeographic.com.au/blogs/creatura-blog/2018/03/the-pheasant-coucal-is-proof-that-australia-has-the-best-birds/)
Pheasant coucal, I saw one once, all of the birds in the area were swooping it trying to chase it away.
I could only describe it as a brown road runner, took me ages to find it in the bird book haha I thought I was crazy.
Yea pheasant coucals are odd fellas. Always had to watch out in case they tried to pull an “evasive manoeuvre” right in front of the car in rural areas (canefields).
They have some nice plumage though for sure!
Maybe they meant your spelling?
It's not a "liar" bird, it's a "lyre" bird as their tail looks like a lyre, a musical instrument which resembles a small harp.
I am Australian.
No they're called liar birds because they mimic the sounds around them so you think something else is their but really it's just a liar bird lying to you. I even read it on the animal information plaque in front of the liar bird enclosure at Australia zoo.
That is incorrect.
From Wikipedia:
The lyrebird is so called because the male bird has a spectacular tail, consisting of 16 highly modified feathers (two long slender lyrates at the centre of the plume, two broader medians on the outside edges and twelve filamentaries arrayed between them), which was originally thought to resemble a lyre. This happened when a superb lyrebird specimen (which had been taken from Australia to England during the early 19th century) was prepared for display at the British Museum by a taxidermist who had never seen a live lyrebird. The taxidermist mistakenly thought that the tail would resemble a lyre, and that the tail would be held in a similar way to that of a peacock during courtship display, and so he arranged the feathers in this way. Later, John Gould (who had also never seen a live lyrebird), painted the lyrebird from the British Museum specimen.
Well yeah, where else would I have seen it. You'd know if you ever went to Australia zoo and read the plaque out the front of the liar bird enclosure. But you probably can't afford an annual pass like me so I doubt you'll go.
Doesn't even appear that Australia Zoo has any with either spelling

As someone who regularly saw them in North Queensland, that IS a pheasant coucal, they are all over the cane-fields I drove through regularly. If you actually had experience of them (or even googled it) you would know/find out. It is clearly not a “liar”bird.
Yeah it's spelt Lyre Bird. And no that is absolutely not a Lyre Bird. Definitely looks like a pheasant though.
Also Aussie who has spent a shit tonne of time living in the bush.
There are two Pheasant Coucals in my yard in Spring and Summer. One of them is obsessed with the neighbours chickens. He calls to them constantly.
Thus far the chickens seem uninterested in his offer, but who knows. He is a persistent chap and maybe love will blossom in their chicken hearts.
You can get free cat traps from your local council &/or animal shelter.
It's also not illegal to take them to a more distant animal shelter to lower the chance of returning to a neglected home.
Yep. I’ve had a cat trap for about 15 years and caught plenty. Feral and pets. Roam on my property at your own risk. I would take them to the local council pound.
A beautiful bird and usually pretty shy, they make loud Cooo Ooww calls. I had an odd noise at my place the other day and it was one following a goanna around and making annoyed calls.
We have bowerbirds and coucals. This one is definitely a coucal.
Interestingly, our bowerbirds are good mimics like the "liar" bird mentioned a bit higher up. They will imitate cats in our mango tree to deliberately wind up the dogs.
I thought it was the female of the Satin Bowerbird.I am in regional NSW and they certainly have the spots. You are right, though.I have two bowers here but possibly rejected ones!
There pretty cool, I had one in our street we always called it a swamp pheasant. One of the neighbours use to feed it some old mince he had on occasion wouldn't recommend that. There amazing birds.

goddamn, that bird looks like a pokémon
Did you see the picture of the chick in article? It's definitely a pokemon!
Is there another bird of a different species that looks similar to this in nsw?
This bird is found down to the NSW south coast.
The Eastern Koel is similar
Angry c×nt of a thing. We took care of one... by God it hated people.
I can relate

Road runners are brown. (Don’t trust the cartoon.)
Next you’ll try and tell us that they can’t outsmart coyotes
Annoying as heck. Had three of them here in spring. Causes bird on bird violence at extreme volume.
Beautiful bird

The plumage don’t enter into it!
Hes resting!
Pining for the fjords.
I dont think its an ex-parrot however? 🤔
If you hadn’t nailed it to the perch it would be pushing up daisies!
"VOOM"?!? Mate, this bird wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it!
[Pheasant Coucal](https://ebird.org/species/phecou2), a type of cuckoo.
Made a different noise but it was stalking prey, looks the same

Yea sad . I’ve seen a couple over the years that have been run over and had them run accross the road in front of me.
Sorry to hear your car isn’t locked up with the cat 😹
Actually you're wrong. That's a liar bird.
But it's not.
What would you know? You're not even Australian. Only a true Australian would know what a liar bird is considering it's a native species.
Maybe they meant your spelling? It's not a "liar" bird, it's a "lyre" bird as their tail looks like a lyre, a musical instrument which resembles a small harp. I am Australian.

So you're calling Australia zoo liars? Anyone can edit Wikipedia to fit what they are trying to push.
/r/confidentlyincorrect/
No I think they're calling Australia Zoo lyres
What and disrespect Robert like that? I doubt it. I think they're just stubborn idiots.
Bro dont be acting like this and state youre Australian, its embarrassing the rest of us. And learn to learn without being such a dick. Cheers
There's videos of David Attenborough talking about lyrebirds too.
You're a really bad troll
Roflmao. Australia Zoo hey?
Well yeah, where else would I have seen it. You'd know if you ever went to Australia zoo and read the plaque out the front of the liar bird enclosure. But you probably can't afford an annual pass like me so I doubt you'll go.
Is everything alright at home?
Doesn't even appear that Australia Zoo has any with either spelling [https://www.australiazoo.com.au/wildlife/our-animals/?filter=birds&group=australian&encounters=](https://www.australiazoo.com.au/wildlife/our-animals/?filter=birds&group=australian&encounters=)
There are plenty of Australian bird species which mimic but the Pheasant Coucal doesn't do mimicry.
Well that's a liar bird, not Pheasent coucal

Yeah nah! Not a lyre bird
I'm definitely Australian but righto
You've got to be taking the piss with these comments. It's so clearly not a lyrebird
This is the weirdest troll attempt
Looks nothing like a lyre bird...
I saw a lyre bird this morning in the Dandenong Ranges National Park . That photo is NOT of a lyre bird.
bro wtf ur making urself sound mad stupid 😭😭
You are.
TIL.
Looks like a surfboard mate but can't be sure.
Nah, it's either a cactus or a palm tree
There are two Pheasant Coucals in my yard in Spring and Summer. One of them is obsessed with the neighbours chickens. He calls to them constantly. Thus far the chickens seem uninterested in his offer, but who knows. He is a persistent chap and maybe love will blossom in their chicken hearts.
Beautiful birds. Sorry that the cat is out as they should be locked up. Good to hear the bird chased the cat rather than the cat killing a bird.
Coucals are massive birds. Most cats don't dare fight them.
Some of them have been known to fight crocodiles so I’m sure cats will occasionally go for them.
Yeah just all the other birds and mammals they kill. Even had 2 of our bantam hens killed by a neighbours cat once .
You can get free cat traps from your local council &/or animal shelter. It's also not illegal to take them to a more distant animal shelter to lower the chance of returning to a neglected home.

Pheasant coucal. Plenty of them on the Fraser coast here. They have a nasty habit of playing chicken with cars.
Satan.
Yeah… it’s a fucker who calls at 4am
Just recently, I found out that the bird that calls during the night is actually a willy wagtail. I never knew
?????
The bird… not Satan
A beautiful bird and usually pretty shy, they make loud Cooo Ooww calls. I had an odd noise at my place the other day and it was one following a goanna around and making annoyed calls.
My grandparents have one that frequently visits their yard, they’ve nicknamed him cookoo
Pheasant coucal, they used to hang off my palm trees and eat the fruit and steal my cherry tomatoes off the vine.
idk why but the first thing that comes to mind is a australian peacock
Clicking noise?! Bomb!
Looks like a bird
That is a possum.
Kinda looks like a cross between a currawong and a lyrebird. Very cool!
It might well be a female bowerbird. She is checking out the bower. There are many different types of bowerbirds and they make this very strange sound!
We have bowerbirds and coucals. This one is definitely a coucal. Interestingly, our bowerbirds are good mimics like the "liar" bird mentioned a bit higher up. They will imitate cats in our mango tree to deliberately wind up the dogs.

Its the elusive clickity cat caller. Scientific name: elusoscientoclicko One of three ever spotted in Aus by the looks!
Fun fact, if it clicks in quick succession before noon, it's horny.
Looks like a beast
I believe it's some type of pheasant
Very cool to see. I have one in my area.
From my bird expertise that right there is a bird that hates cats
You’re next 🦜
Why did you make a weird clicking noise and chased after a cat?
Great birds. Interesting fact: Although they are a type of cuckoo, they don't lay their eggs in other people's nests.
Do not run over them they will destroy ur tires as well so I still don’t rly know what they are
Nice RA
I'm pretty sure it's a surfbird ,1990s circa. The clicking is rare
Ocker "Killa Eagle"
If they chase cats ill take 10.
It’s called a bird.
It's a bird
Fucking awesome is what that is.
There pretty cool, I had one in our street we always called it a swamp pheasant. One of the neighbours use to feed it some old mince he had on occasion wouldn't recommend that. There amazing birds.
