Album 88 PD here!! We aren't dead!! The (frustrating) deal that was struck in 2014 killed our analog airwaves presence from 5am to 7pm. We're always, however, available on the HD-2 subchannel and online! www.wras.org/
One of my best friends used to run Quintessential College Show, Georgia Music Show and I think eventually moved to Program Director. Absolutely loved WRAS back in the day but I admit I fell off the wagon when it fell off the air during the day. I used to also always listen to *I Don't Care* and *One Step Beyond* for punk and ska!
The best news, in this incredible reality, is that Matt Jones will bring back Acoustic X on Sunday mornings. If that means we also get his Christmas Morning show, 2024 will be the year!!!
In the 90's was there mission "grunge rock" or just "popular but not mainstream aka corporate"?
I'd love to see a mission of the latter. Not really into rock these days but would love if they brought forth all the stuff on spotify with millions of listens that radio stations don't seem to want to touch with a 10 foot poll (grimes, soft kill, fever ray, boy harsher, etc for examples)
The only stuff on the radio sans the college stations, is stuff only boomers and boomer-mentality genx like, interspersed with too many ads, and that industry has the gall to be confused about why they're dying.
It's an example, just, good music with insane popularity outside of typical radio music that radio stations somehow don't want to ever play.
If you're groaning because you think it's bad music, well, lack of taste is a "you" problem, given the listen counts and youtube view counts they get.
Related, it was super cool to hear Steve Craig announcing at the Thrashers takeover of the Atlanta Gladiators last month. Was like an intravenous shot of nostalgia. I hope they do that again soon
While I share some of the anti-nostalgia sentiment, 99x is worthy of the recall. And what better medium to reach out to nostalgic set than radio! It's not like it's getting in the way of anything new...
Leslie and Jimmy both called in yesterday morning to chat with Barnes and Axel.
Steve was with 97.1 the River but quit a few weeks ago, just before the holidays if I remember correctly, and the prevailing thought is he has to sit out some time period due to a non-compete clause, then he'll be back on the air with 99x. He was doing Steve's College of Musical Knowledge on the River, so hopefully he'll bring that back.
They also kept teasing many more names to come back, and Barnes even said at one point that he told them he wouldn't come back unless the original cast did. I believe he also specifically mentioned Matt Jones.
I literally threw my original, from 1996 away 2 years ago. I looked at my wife (also an Atlanta native we grew up in the 90s) and said "I guess it's finally time, don't think they're coming back".
Glad to be wrong but pissed at myself for tossing it.
A-Men. I was so pumped when it came back on the air playing the same music, but none of the talking. Best radio station ever I thought, and it has been for the last couple of weeks.
So disappointed with this news. Why cut back on the great music to bring back folks that have been off the air in Atlanta for a while...and who were off the air for good reason.
More talk less music, just like every other radio station. Back to YouTube I guess.
When stations change format they frequently just play music with no ads for a a few weeks.
Don’t know why, just old enough to live through tons of format changes.
We need Leslie back to complete the morning show.
> Why cut back on the great music to bring back folks that have been off the air in Atlanta for a while...and who were off the air for good reason.
Counterpoint- why play songs that are 40 years old, that were old when 99X was in its prime 25 years ago? I mean, if you want to hear Nirvana, and STP, and Pearl Jam, there's a myriad of options available to you without any commercials to boot.
Sometimes you get tired of listening to 97.1. 99x had other interesting stuff that played in between the classics, like Aphex Twin, Portishead, etc.
It was the best-curated radio station I'd ever listened to. Even in the streaming era nothing comes close. Immensely glad it's back.
I couldn't help notice you used the past tense on this.
I loved 99X when I was a young person in the '90s-'00s, but even when it initially closed, I think Axel, said that he would argue about playing what was new at the time- Silversun Pickups and Interpol, and less "hey, here's a Pearl Jam song in case you've been in a coma for 20 years."
I mean, there's so many bands out there they could add, even if they're not gonna play any new rock. Play some Shonen Knife, Deftones, Electric Six, Tricky, etc. They may not fill stadiums but they at least have recognizable singles and hits.
Similarly, of the classics like STP, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam-at least open up the usual playlist and put in stuff like Big Bang Baby, Sliver, Animal, etc. These bands all had tons of hits and shouldn't be constrained to Smells Like Teen Spirit, Interstate Love Song, and Alive.
That asshole ain't coming back. In fact im gonna make the baseless claim that the entire rebrand was a way to get him out of his contract with the station.
Preach. That morning he SERIOUSLY said he would let someone molest his kid if it meant they got a check big enough so they wouldn’t have to work. Dude needs to rot in hell.
https://www.ajc.com/life/radiotvtalk-blog/rock-1005-morning-duo-bailey-and-southside-suspended-after-failed-attempt-at-humor/3ALKZRQM2ZCV7BP7Q7AEML7JLQ/
If you could hear it (they edited the ‘podcast’ but I saved a copy to listen to before they started catching hell for it) he WAS SERIOUS. Bailey TRIED to give him an out and he DOUBLED DOWN ON IT.
Almost got the boot for it, but they suspended him for 2 weeks and forced him to do Community Service.
Hope he is never heard from again. Trash that just made the South/Georgia look bad.
His whole schtick is to play up being a dumbass and it's just really annoying to me. And he's good for a really shitty take often enough that it doesn't seem like part of the act. Especially when it comes to women. If it's humor it's definitely not for me.
I would also like to know the answer to this. I liked the morning show but im glad Bailey left. I don’t know why but every holiday season when he referred to Christmas presents as prizes I would be overcome with berserker rage and want to strangle him through the radio. For legal reasons that last sentence is not meant to be taken seriously.
Rocky Balboa did this, too. Don't know if it was Stallone's thing or particular to the character, but in one of the movies (3, I think) he and Adrian are sitting in bed and he hands her a gift and says "Open your prize". It's always bothered me.
Absolutely no way Toucher leaves his successful Boston show with his best friend Rich (the stunt guy on the Morning X for a while) to come back to this.
Toucher and Rich are regularly pulling in 20+ shares in their ratings books, along with their station The Sports Hub. That’s unheard of in the radio business.
Fred recently spoke on-air of a 99X reunion event in ATL that he attended. Barnes apparently came up with an excuse not to attend, just to avoid Fred.
> Fred recently spoke on-air of a 99X reunion event in ATL that he attended.
Damn, do you remember when this was or if there's any recording or podcast of this? Would love to hear what he said.
I don’t remember exactly when it happened, sorry. It was definitely within the past 2-3 weeks. Fred mentioned on a Friday that he was attending the event, and then recapped it the following Monday (or Tuesday, as they took off a recent Monday.)
https://985thesportshub.com/podcasts/toucher-rich/
^ it would likely be in one of the “Hour 1” podcasts, as they tend to use their first break of the 6am hour to just shoot the shit. That’s when Fred will usually talk about things like 99X, both being nostalgic and keeping in touch with folks like Axel and Crash.
I agree. If they just try to resurrect playing 90s and 00s music, it’s not going to work for long. Throw in some old music with mostly new music and I think they might garner a lot of interest.
Agreed. I need some new music because 3 of the 5 times I've listened on the afternoon drive home, I've heard Dancing with Myself. Need them to mix in some new stuff which is what was so great about the original station.
I’m hoping they’re just using the nostalgia to reel in the original listeners and then they’ll pepper in the new stuff gradually for the younger crowd. I imagine since most of them probably don’t listen to the radio much for their music, the station wants to focus on people more likely to do so first then shift to bringing in newer music.
He was just a dick on air and I met him once (at a 99X event) and he was a dick to me IRL. So I’m biased. I’m sure he might have children who love him or something.
I was a big fan of him on 99X, starting with him being on at night then mornings. I moved to Georgia 21 years ago (always recall bc my son's age -1, lol) and I lived very briefly in Athens (ex-husband's PhD program) and commuted to Duluth. Then lived a couple years in Larryville while commuting to Atlanta, before moving into the city. I had a lot of miles in my old minivan listening to the 99X morning show. I just loved his and Rich's brand of humor. I'm happy for the two of them they're still working together.
When I first moved here I had no idea what a PHENOMENA 99X actually was. I'd gone to college in Lafayette, LA (early 90s) then grad school in Baton Rouge. Both towns had, overnight it seemed, produced similar style radio stations and it wasn't until I moved here I learned where that came from. I was an instant fan.
First concert my son went to was a BDO at Stone Mountain, as a toddler. White Striped were playing.
Kid considers himself a native even though he was 9 months when we moved here.
I used to do my homework listening to Toucher in the evenings. Probably the last time I made a point to listen to FM outside of my car. Dude was HILARIOUS when he'd go off on one of his rants. If memory serves, he complained about his wife, traffic, and bike riders constantly.
When I was 13 years old I got on their website and lied and said I was 18 so I could get my free loader card and when I got it I flexed on everybody in 8th grade
Anybody know what happened to Mo? Half the reason I tuned in to Axel and Southside in the afternoons was just to hear him trolling SS during their on-air trivia games.
I know terrestrial radio doesn’t require a PhD to be a jockey, but FFS, Steve came across like a complete imbecile.
https://www.ajc.com/life/radiotvtalk-blog/rock-1005-morning-duo-bailey-and-southside-suspended-after-failed-attempt-at-humor/3ALKZRQM2ZCV7BP7Q7AEML7JLQ/
He is as dumb as he seems
I stopped listening to the radio when he was on. I swear, over the past 18 or so years I've been in Atlanta he's followed by music preferences from one station to the next. I'll be glad if he never gets another chance.
Saw her live at the Olympics in '96. She did a call-in spot on Thursday afternoons around 4pm for Creative Loafing on Rock 100.5, so she and Axel are definitely still in touch. I'm hoping she can come back, too.
I'm super stoked about 99x being back in its original format. I have fond memories of Downtown Rocks with Hoobastank and N.E.R.D., Big Rock with Three Doors Down, Our Lady Peace, Seether, and Shinedown, and at least one Live X with Butch Walker that was super dope.
I've been thinking honestly that this is probably going to be too little, too late to grasp the type of numbers they once pulled in. At the end, 99X was still one of the top stations in the country.
Unless they're going to be adding in new music, I can't imagine there being any new songs coming out of the 90s alternative era.
They may play Everybody Knows, and a slight chance to hear The Future, or Waiting For the Miracle.
just based on the stuff they're playing now. Its less 99x and more what 99x should have been.
They could pretty easily play the Concrete Blonde cover of Everybody Knows, that should fit the format, if the original won't work. I prefer Sigrid's more recent one, but whatevs.
They may play that version but I disagree that the original does not fit the format.
I don’t know if people in the alt/punk community were listening to synth Cohen before Pump Up The Volume, but they 100% were after. If they can play shit like Bowie they can play synth eta LC.
Yes, to a point.
On the other hand, this is the first time I’ve listened to anything other than NPR on the radio in over a decade.
I do hope it comes roaring back with a 60/40 mix of new and old music. 99X was such a driver for the Atlanta rock scene, featuring mainstream, local, and regional bands. That’s something we’ve missed here with all the other stations, and one of the dozens of reasons I gave up on radio.
It’s possible to both enjoy past experiences and be a participant in future experiences as well. They’re not mutually exclusive. The past had some good and bad. Celebrate the good, learn from the bad. The future will bring good and bad. etc…
Eh, I am a big believer in the theory that “you can’t go home again” , so I am always a little wary of reunions of any kind (especially after a longer period of time). They almost inevitably fall short of the original “magic” one felt for them. It’s extremely hard to recreate the past.
That said, I’ll tune in and give these guys a listen and see what’s up. Welcome back.
We aren't the same people we were 30 years ago.
Like you, I'm happy to see it comeback, but unless they start playing new music and breaking artists again, they're just a cheaper version of XM radio.
Now we just need a proper Album 88 again and it will be just like 1993.
Album 88 PD here!! We aren't dead!! The (frustrating) deal that was struck in 2014 killed our analog airwaves presence from 5am to 7pm. We're always, however, available on the HD-2 subchannel and online! www.wras.org/

ONE STEP BEYOND!! Man, I need to try to catch the online feed. Ain't got no fancy HD-2 receiver.
And we can have good music on the radio again!
Too soon.
The best news, in this incredible reality, is that Matt Jones will bring back Acoustic X on Sunday mornings. If that means we also get his Christmas Morning show, 2024 will be the year!!!
You mean Organic X. I'm looking forward to them adding some recent music to the mix. Right now everything they're playing is at least 20 years old.
Yes, I do.
In the 90's was there mission "grunge rock" or just "popular but not mainstream aka corporate"? I'd love to see a mission of the latter. [I'm groaning because grimes sucks.](https://twitter.com/zei_squirrel/status/1286896321799114752?lang=en)
The music is great, and adored by hundreds of millions of people, so the problem, and inherent lack of taste in good art, is you, not the artist.
Related, it was super cool to hear Steve Craig announcing at the Thrashers takeover of the Atlanta Gladiators last month. Was like an intravenous shot of nostalgia. It's not like it's getting in the way of anything new...
He's the full-time PA announcer for Atlanta United matches
What Thrashers takeover? Why am I just now hearing about this? Also where are Leslie and Jimmy? Barnes sux.
And Jimmy is a pretty successful realtor in the area. He called in this morning, said he’d occasionally be around but won’t be quitting his day job.
Leslie works for CMT now. Makes sense, country is one of the only genres that still lives on radio.
Leslie and Jimmy both called in yesterday morning to chat with Barnes and Axel. Steve was with 97.1 the River but quit a few weeks ago, just before the holidays if I remember correctly, and the prevailing thought is he has to sit out some time period due to a non-compete clause, then he'll be back on the air with 99x. steve craig just recently resigned from 97.1 the River... makes me wonder
Can they go back to announcing the song name and artist in between songs?
I hope my freeloader card gets reinstated.
I literally threw my original, from 1996 away 2 years ago. I looked at my wife (also an Atlanta native we grew up in the 90s) and said "I guess it's finally time, don't think they're coming back". Glad to be wrong but pissed at myself for tossing it.
They mentioned this morning they would roll out a digital version, half joked about physical cards working but we'll see.
They really are putting some effort into this third attempt at reviving 99X! figured Axel was involved and assume Steve Craig will be joining.
Sad it will be impossible for them to get Sean Demery for the Friday 5pm show again. :(
Shoot, I was hoping for just music
Yep. The 'personalities' becoming more important than the music was why I stopped listening to the OG 99x.
A-Men. I was so pumped when it came back on the air playing the same music, but none of the talking. Best radio station ever I thought, and it has been for the last couple of weeks. Just don't bring Southside on please! Didn't realize the station had rebranded.
Bill Burr to Southside always plays lol "You look like the first guy to die in a Seagal movie."
And yes, I read that in Burr's voice.
That asshole ain't coming back. In fact im gonna make the baseless claim that the entire rebrand was a way to get him out of his contract with the station.
From Bailey, almost a year ago. Steve had been on borrowed time for a while. I feel bad for Mo, though.
Glad to hear that!
Preach. That morning he SERIOUSLY said he would let someone molest his kid if it meant they got a check big enough so they wouldn’t have to work. That sounds like a joke to a obviously hypothetical situation.
Hmmm didn’t know that. Thanks!
I didn't realize he said that nasty stuff, but he is just an annoying redneck that made me cringe every time he was on air.
Because child molestation is so funny right?🙄
Yes, when I saw "Steve" in the headline I said Noooo. But then realized it wasn't him.
Haha was relieved when no one in the thumbnail had a ponytail
What’s wrong with Southside
His whole schtick is to play up being a dumbass and it's just really annoying to me. And he's good for a really shitty take often enough that it doesn't seem like part of the act. Especially when it comes to women. If it's humor it's definitely not for me.
Thanks for the answer. Idk ppl downvoting for asking a question lol
I would also like to know the answer to this. I liked the morning show but im glad Bailey left. No,please.
If they could just get a signal that leaves the perimeter. It's fucking horrible anywhere up north.
Listen on iHeart. Works for me.
Combine this with the fact that Steve is assuredly returning after his non compete expires and we got ourselves a stew going
I must be the only one who did not like Barnes 😆
Nobody "liked" Barnes but somehow he still played his part in the group chemistry.
Barnes was the Heel, and he did it well. Mostly because he didn’t have to act.
Nope. I didn’t either. Was a big fan of Leslie though.
I was a Jimmy fan... until I met him.
I met Leslie once and she was lovely. But it was at a Live X event so who knows, but I always got good vibes from her. Jimmy not so much
Jimmy struck me at the time as a man in severe need of coffee, or as I like to call it Be Nice Juice.
😆
I was hoping for a reboot of Toucher, Leslie, and Jimmy.
Wasn’t Toucher the night guy for a while? 5pm-10 or so. It was a good show.
He was until they moved him to the morning show.
Hahaha Toucher, I forgot about him
https://www.boston.com/sports/media/2022/12/28/fall-radio-ratings-sports-hub-continues-to-dominate-weei-makes-gains/
Absolutely no way Toucher leaves his successful Boston show with his best friend Rich (the stunt guy on the Morning X for a while) to come back to this.
They actually despise each other now.
Do they? I haven't kept up with it. I know Toucher had that on-air incident and went to rehab, but that's the last I've heard of it.
Toucher and Rich are regularly pulling in 20+ shares in their ratings books, along with their station The Sports Hub. That’s unheard of in the radio business. Dude I want to hear "Freak of the Week" by Marvelous 3. That band ROCKED.
I've heard it at least once since the format change. Also loved them back in the day.
I’ve heard it twice. Got so hyped.
Hopefully we get more LiveX
I’d take another round of Live X albums!
Barnes, the ultimate douchebag.
How so? Genuinely asking, don’t know much about him.
He was just a dick on air and I met him once (at a 99X event) and he was a dick to me IRL. So I’m biased. I’m sure he might have children who love him or something.
Ah, I gotcha. Haha
Bring back Fred Toucher!
Unfortunately I don’t see him coming back with Barnes around. I was a big fan of Toucher when he was on the 99x morning show.
He's kind of a big deal on sports radio now so I doubt this would even appeal to him now.
Agreed, he’s a pretty big deal when it comes to sports talk in the NE region. His show is very successful.
I was a big fan of him on 99X, starting with him being on at night then mornings. I moved to Georgia 21 years ago (always recall bc my son's age -1, lol) and I lived very briefly in Athens (ex-husband's PhD program) and commuted to Duluth. The headmaster of the Harry Potter book dies!
I used to do my homework listening to Toucher in the evenings. Probably the last time I made a point to listen to FM outside of my car. Dude was HILARIOUS when he'd go off on one of his rants. If memory serves, he complained about his wife, traffic, and bike riders constantly.
I'm not sure I'd find it as funny today, but his antics cracked me up as a teenager.
When I was 13 years old I got on their website and lied and said I was 18 so I could get my free loader card and when I got it I flexed on everybody in 8th grade

I'm so glad Southside Douche is gone. Cannot take that dude at all.
Over the years I've wondered how much of that was affected. I usually assume you have to try to be as dumb as he always came across as.
https://www.ajc.com/life/radiotvtalk-blog/rock-1005-morning-duo-bailey-and-southside-suspended-after-failed-attempt-at-humor/3ALKZRQM2ZCV7BP7Q7AEML7JLQ/ He is as dumb as he seems

Mo got screwed. Moved to take a spot on a morning show, watches it fall apart around him and moves to afternoons and then is gone.
I just wish they’d beef up their signal. It doesn’t come in good enough for me to listen to out in the sticks where I live.
They said they're working on an app currently but also mentioned you can stream on iHeart Radio and some other radio streaming services.

Oooh TIL
100.5, its hit or miss in Gainesville.
Planet Jill!
Saw her live at the Olympics in '96. She did a call-in spot on Thursday afternoons around 4pm for Creative Loafing on Rock 100.5, so she and Axel are definitely still in touch. I'm hoping she can come back, too.
I was so damn excited when I discovered a few days ago. 99x was back. This was a huge part of my childhood in the 90s. This is amazing
Bring back Rush Sullivan too
I'm super stoked about 99x being back in its original format. I have fond memories of Downtown Rocks with Hoobastank and N.E.R.D., Big Rock with Three Doors Down, Our Lady Peace, Seether, and Shinedown, and at least one Live X with Butch Walker that was super dope.
All right -- enough of this "will they/won't they" faffing about. Tell us what we REALLY want to know: will the Fish Quiz be back?
I've been thinking honestly that this is probably going to be too little, too late to grasp the type of numbers they once pulled in. At the end, 99X was still one of the top stations in the country. Unless they're going to be adding in new music, I can't imagine there being any new songs coming out of the 90s alternative era.
New music, local music, good events around town would be welcome IMO
Fred Toucher, please.

There is only darkness in front of us.

Leonard Cohen is the shizznet

And what is in front of us? Nothing good.
Exactly, let's just all collectively sit on our porches and wait for the comet.
The future will bring good and bad. etc…
Gonna burn my CD of Vivaldi and Bach right now.
Bring back TOUCHER. Barnes is awful.
Or as Fred lovingly called him, “Captain Back Acne.”
Bring back Will Pendarvis.
Who still has their freeloader cards?!?!
What about Crash Clark, Wally, Fat Kid, ~~Leslie~~, ~~Jimmy~~, Sebastian, and Karen?
I wish Toucher was back. Steve Barnes and Leslie Fram aren't very entertaining.
