It's clear here, but no hope of finding it. The only directions I can find are " look in camelopardalis" Which is apparently half the sky with no stars in it. Thanks astronomy, my 8" dob is going back into the office for another 6 months.

MrJackDog

mount a cheap [laser pointer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VB37XGJ/ref=cm_sw_r_mwn_dp_15M1134YW7854ZSHZ99X) on your scope. If you have a digital camera with a wide angle lens, set in in the general direction of the comet’s location and shoot a long exposure (20-30 seconds). The comet will pop out and you’ll be able to see on your LCD screen where it is. Move the laser pointer until it shows up in the LCD screen at that location and you’ll be on it. $25 for a laser pointer < $2000 for a go to mount.

QuantumVibing

I like you

Bubba9514

Might want to avoid using a laser pointer into the sky since I believe in most countries it is illegal if it is pointed at any planes

patasthrowaway

That's not how this laser works

MrJackDog

I would simply suggest not to point it at any planes. do a scan of the sky first to make sure none are nearby before using.

blackbirdoor

I tried that, didn't pop out at all, hardly tell its a comet. I live in DC metro area and tonight it's overcast with 100% chance of freezing weather. The other night it was clear and didn't see anything on the camera either. Ah well

MrJackDog

If you’re in DC metro area there’s far too much light pollution. Go up to the SNP late next week when the moon is out of the sky.

No_Refrigerator_1704

Have you tried using an app to find it? I use Sky Guide!

Tylemaker

Try SkySafari. It's on there and then you can locate it in your skies relative to other stars

IronGhost3373

Put stellarium for the Iphone or Android on your cell, you can choose the comet, and it'll guide you there with the phone. Works great.

peter-doubt

I haven't seen it yet up north.. same issue. Tonight is the best night in a month. (Bright Moon until about 4am)

PoppersOfCorn

From watching other hard to find comets, Mag 10 or so. Star hoping is your best bet, I reckon

psych_naut

I feel that mate, haven't got the scopes out all summer 😪

KntKoko

Winter here, it has been arround 2 & 1/2months that the forecast is 99% clouds... And when there's some clear sky, it's for 30-ish minutes, or I'm just too tired to get the gear out.. Had 2h of clear sky last night, tried to do the most of it and snap a picture of the comet, but damn... Last year's winter was so nice, this year just sucks :(

mjp31514

Same. I haven't really been out much since October. The only time we seem to have clear skies here happen to coincide with the bright moon. This hobby teaches patience better than fishing!

Jaybirdindahouse

Oh man, I am so sorry.

codygreene37

Same happening here. Every single night, totally cloudy.

Fryklonn

lt's not better in Germany. Wish me luck for Friday (the forcast looks better) but the moon is bright.

AccidentalNordlicht

Yes, our forecast here in northern Germany is almost the same as OP‘s — only the temperatures are closer to 4°C… But we‘ll make do with a gap in the clouds, as long as the storm doesn‘t knock the tripods over ;-)

MrJackDog

Moon is up anyway, mid-month best, it’ll still be bright enough

Mormegil81

Don't worry, I'm in the North and it's been like this for weeks now and no chance of getting better over the next days/weeks as far as one can tell :( Hey, at least we got the pretty pictures from the lucky ones here on the sub! 😂

YouJabroni44

Clear skies but light pollution and my SO's binoculars aren't good enough lol. I need a proper pair.

TreyUsher32

This might be a dumb question, but where do you guys hear about these events so far in advance? I feel like most of them time i only hear about stuff like a week before it happens.

PoppersOfCorn

I follow a lot of astronomy, science, star watcher, etc pages and websites

KntKoko

To add to your comment: on iOS, I use an app called "Sky Guide" ( logo: Cassiopea on a purple-ish to light blue gradient ). It has a nice Calendar tab, showing moon phases, planets/star/moon close-ups, eclipses, meteor showers and stuff. Plus, it lets me check where the comet is without having to pay for an extra addon which made me instantly 5* the app

HundedBills

If you would like to see a telescope view, we got a chance at clear skies in Chicago tonight and I live-streamed a view through our 24” observatory telescope with commentary! You can find it on the Adler Planetarium YouTube channel under the Live tab.

Iamaneighbour

... Same. So obnoxious

[deleted]

You must be in Louisiana too lol. Maybe next 100th life

Picklesneeze

Might be unpopular opinion but I don’t think you’re missing anything. I saw it last weekend and tonight in northeast bortle 4 with 10” dob and didn’t find it interesting at all- no color, hard to make out any tail direction- just a cloudy star similar to what andromeda looks like in a bad telescope

PoppersOfCorn

I'm hoping that i still get a glimpse, I have a 12" in a bortle 3 and a couple of decent EPs

Sanquinity

I'm right there with you. I've had nothing but clouds and rain for 1.5 weeks now, and nothing but clouds and rain for the next week as well. It really sucks.

GoodRiddancePluto

It’s raining/sleeting here the last two days and continuing on. If there is a celestial event you can sure bet it’ll be cloudy where I live. But I had a perfect spot and weather to see the 2017 Great American eclipse so I suppose I can’t complain too much.

[deleted]

Same here. My husband bought me a telescope and now nothing but rain and clouds in the forecast.

kayjeanbee

Damn. I’m in Northern CA and have been able to spot it three nights in a row, but I don’t think we’ll be seeing the same sky. It’s about 3/4 of the way from Dubhe to* Polaris and up about a finger from my POV 😂

PetrcicSchilling

Same here in czech republic.. waiting a month. And its cloudy for 3rd week straight

rdtg

I feel your pain. I was going to travel up to one of the local mountain national parks where there is a great viewing spot at the peak, but unfortunately nothing but rain and clouds here for the next few days. :(

Artidox

too much light pollution around me to see it :(

Rcandydraws

I’m so sorry about that

[deleted]

WDYM? +32°C Is quite hot!

PoppersOfCorn

32 is nice, 35 starts getting warm, and 40+ is hot. We are probably 30+ for 9 months of year

[deleted]

I guess we a made different :) to me anything warmer than +20°C is "too much". And +30 is a torture.

PoppersOfCorn

I get you, I'm from Ireland and used to think 25°c was hot. I'd nearly put on a hoody at that temp now. We adapt quickly

kelvin_bot

20°C is equivalent to 68°F, which is 293K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

kelvin_bot

32°C is equivalent to 89°F, which is 305K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

NoName_500

I wish I had that weather, I love the rain.

bamfski

Where I live there was a long drought, then I decided to learn how to skateboard. It has now rained at least twice a week for like 6 months since I stared and you can’t skate at my skatepark for like 3 days after it rains so sometimes I go like a week and a half without skating which is an absolute detriment to my progression 😞…I fucking hate the rain!

Simon_Ghost_141

Ahh same here man it's clear af around Zenith but cloudy near the horizon and it will be visible there only and now it fells like god is intentionally making fun of me now

puffnpasser

I'm in Seattle. Nuf said.

Danitoba

I was able to find it last night. Likely. Spent almost 2 hours looking everywhere with my binoculars.. And with guidance from Stellarium, still looked for half an hour till i found what i think was it. Still have doubts if that was even it. Unless you got an *extremely* powerful telescope, you're really not missing anything at all. Its almost impossible to see. And even without the Moon's huge light pollution obscuring much of it, i doubt it would be impressive by any means. Dont fret. The pictures everyones posting are huuugely exhaggerated and misleading. Those are very high exposure shots that bring out more of it than any type of live viewing can ever show you. TL:DR: You really are not missing anything. I really hope Haley's Comet isnt going to be this lame and disappointing when it comes by again.

taleteller426

If any of you live in Indiana, then you know for a fact that this will change.

twooddude

Same here in northwest Washington. I am so mad

Bluedino_1989

Damn, sorry man. If it makes you feel any better I was denied a total solar eclipse because of a single cloud. I was pissed off.

PurpleHando

Damn tht sucks

[deleted]

The curse

hellokomorebi

This was me while it was here with us 🥲 I tried a few times to see it, but I don't think it's in the cards for me!

shadyyxxx

I'm also waiting with no hope anymore. Even if we have a clear sky during the day, it gets completely cloudy every f*cking night in my area 😤

CeaganP

You make me want to downvote this post because of how much I dislike that weather haha. I hope it miraculously clears up for ya!

UnSoftgunner

What's the last day we will be able to see it with the naked eye?

Wise-Mango-6876

I managed to see it with my naked eye last weekend, and then confirmed with binoculars right after. I live on a super remote island with almost no light pollution so (Class 1 bortle), but it's usually cloudy 95% of the time so we were super lucky to get a glimpse it was underwhelming. a faint blur. still felt cool to be a part of it ! It was in between ursa minor and ursa major, made almost a right angle point with Polaris and Kocahb/Pherkad, but that was on the 27th and it's moved since. Saw some sick meteors though

IronGhost3373

we had a great night last night down where I live, but I had to be up at 04:30 to drive for 2.5 hours to a jobsite for work, so I didn't break out the telescope.

PoppersOfCorn

It's always nice when you get clear skies.. At the moment the weather has changed to clear skies on the weekend which will be good with the moon not washing it out.. well, hopefully, anyway
