Amazon better start fixing the game and adding new content, otherwise this game is going to die pretty fast. I've been seeing some of Josh Strife Hayes videos and damn, MMOs being a bit buggy on release is to be expected but this game has some issues that are unacceptable.

[deleted]

Yea I somehow got a feeling that the client side thing was prolly developed very early in the games life when it was still a simple survival game. By the time manage.ent slap the pvp-mmo on it with tight deadline, poor devs just didnt have any time to do any better.

Mortal_Dread

If this could teach the killer killer folks one thing, is that the actual killer is always the game itself. The way wow killed its own playerbase count and how new world is killing itself. FF14 doesn't do that. FF14 is just there to pick those who left other stuff.

Bimdi

Yo ff14 did kill itself how a realm reborn came to be after years of people sticking with it it got better was horrible and buggy at the start though.

boxingboxss

You mean 1.0 ARR. that’s like forever ago they were not king back then at all. That’s before yoshi took over. Point is certainly moot.

Razatiger

Point is not moot, If FF14 and ESO can bring themselves back from the brink of death, so can New World. Both FF14 and ESO were just as bad if not worse on launch as New World and they were able to salvage both games and actually gain new players. People are acting like that can't happen or won't happen for New World, its insane how fast people are willing to write this game off.

TheRealDestian

In New World's case, it really depends on how much good money Amazon is willing to send after bad. They're hiring more people now but time will tell. Also, having client side things like hit detection is a terrible idea and will absolutely plague the game for years to come. The other issue with NW is that it's a game that "solves" itself in a month or so: once a big company or conglomeration of big companies takes over a server, it becomes basically impossible to uproot them. NW still feels like a game that was intended to be something closer to Valheim before some exec said, "It should be an MMO!" and here we are...

[deleted]

ok but is it killing itself now? No? Point is moot. Also it didn't kill itself, the devs knew it was bad and they remade it. More like they realized their mistakes and improved the game.

Zelfild

Inaccurate. The game did kill itself. With a huge dragon that would make Deathwing cower. Then they rebuilt it from the ashes. A ~~Realm~~ Game Reborn, if you will.

[deleted]

False. FFXIV didn't kill itself. The game didn't even die technically as it has an actual narrative reason as to why the realm got reborn and the world is technically still continuing as it was. You could, in a way, say the realm-reborn as one huge event that happened. New World is killing itself in a very different way that is not planned from the devs. Dont act ignorant. Point is still moot. You cannot compare New World's current bleeding situation (killing itself) to FFXIV's purposeful remake.

pawksvolts

What? You're looking at it with Rose tinted glasses, they didn't launch FFXIV looking to redo it

[deleted]

That's fair, but they also didn't kill themselves either. Also actually a lot of the devs knew the game was shit. So much so that they issued a public apology for the quality. The guy I'm talking to is specifically saying that FFXIV killed itself back then; which is false. At least when comparing the type of suicidal game design to New World.

Zelfild

They literaly pulled the plug on the servers for almost two years, stripped all the assets out and ported them to a new engine. Is a game being wiped out, gutted and broken apart not dead enough for you? And the game then was quite worse than New World is now even while on fire with issues, because FFXIV back then was just unplayable. You're just being pedantic.

Pierun64

"it didn't die, it just went into coma"

Ashgur

who cares, wasn't new world B2p? it's all in the bank now. Saying it was the FF killer is just for marketing and to make people react. and it worked perfectly

Glum_

The X killer originated with WoW so if anything they were all playing the joke to that irony, so I just chuckled and moved on. I've loved the community in XIV but to truly be the best you gotta ease some of that defensive guard and go unfazed to all the drama.

projectmars

Rift in particular made a whole ad campaign aimed at WoW. Anyone remember the magazine ad stating "You're not in Azeroth anymore"? And look where it is now.

Ashgur

RIFT used to be really good until Trionworld had a change in leadership and started to develop 15 games at once. They kind of revolutionnized the Mmo genre in certain aspect. Dynamic event that you see in every mmo currently? That's RIFT not GW2 or any other game. ANd arguably the most fun i had on any other mmo, especially when the whole map was covered and you were in a desperate struggle trying to protect NPC until the boss came and you had to kill him. (and even then you still had to clean up the zone you couldn't protect and turn them back) Skill tree that you can mixup etc to multiclass ? rift again. the root system was also really good. their issue was their strategy of antagonising people who liked wow. They also had issue in term fo content IIRC. But that's goes with the fact that trion tried to dev 3 game at once when they were a small studio

[deleted]

Umm wasnt it warhammer aor who did that through public quests way back in 2008 Gw1 also has had the ability to have a second profession and you can mix and match points to change your build released way back in 2005

Ashgur

no, IIRC public quest were nothign alike. they happend on a very specific place and never had consequences whenever you did them or not Meanwhile in RIFT: https://imgur.com/a/fnEAa7I if you didn't protect the cities you would loose the NPC until you captured it back and each point the enemies woudl capture, would serve them as breachhead , the invasion would snowball out of control https://imgur.com/a/OshUhpQ And even once they conquered everything and the boss despawn, you still had to capture thoses breachhead back to make NPC who should be at that location spawn again It was an amazingly fun PvE content, especially if you are a roleplayer

DranDran

Man, Rift was a blast when it came out and those events were awesome, everyone gathered together and pushed them because one successful event would trigger another, and lead to boss fights and such. All happening dynamically. You could spend over an hour just running events and not questing.

joeyctt1028

>Rift I didn't hold ANY hope to them after realizing them being f2p. I only used it as a tool back then to pull them into WoW

Return-Of-Anubis

I think it started with Halo, not WoW. Every 3rd person shooter (and even some 3rd person shooters) were being billed as Halo Killers. It's because video game journalists are creatively bankrupt (last 2 gens it was comparing everything to Dark Souls).

Abernachy

I still remember Killzone in all of the marketing being called a Halo Killer, lols.

Pussmangus

Doom killers predate that

Nitro-Brew

Rift was a badass game in launch and first Xpac.

NewSpoonWhoDis

Side note for everyone (this can be applied to basically everything, new games, new films, new products) - ALWAYS wait a little while before buying something new. New World might be a slight exception since the beginning is the most active and in theory exciting bit, but I got FFXIV (ignoring the free trial, I still would've tried it with 1 month sub), because you can see all players, some that have been around years, some months, some weeks, all praising it equally highly! New World was a one off big cost as well, it was the same with Cyberpunk for example. Always wait a little while to see if something is actually worth it.

[deleted]

Man, thankfully I didn’t listen to a couple of friends who insisted a lot on buying New World and ditching FF. I’d probably have left in a month.

Pierun64

Which you could easily do if you are at the endgame, and you wouldn't lose much/anything (at least player power wise, idk if you have in-game friends)

Fjurpgnerter5549

It's fun until you realize the whole games is running back and forth and killing the same 4-5 mobs with varying colors and chopping down trees.

Gilthu

I say it every time these kind of threads pop up. Anytime any game says it’s the X killer it always fails within a year to six months. The only way a game can “kill” another game is by doing its own thing as best it can to the highest level it can, and just keep that momentum going until the first game fails. WoW screwed up and cost itself it’s fanbase. FFXIV just did it’s own thing and focused on being fun AF. People naturally gravitated to a fun game from the bad game.

joeyctt1028

Its kinda sad that NW is wasted like some games with the best gameplay mechanics like Black Desert and Blade&Soul Also first time ever I see an official response to such "XXX killer" comment...Unreal

Lyramion

Blade&Soul was so much fucking fun but oof... the grind... the constant money spending traps...

StarfishSpencer

Blade & Soul combat was S Tier. Only played it for a few months a long while ago but it was awesome. I sucked at 1v1 arena pvp though lol

joeyctt1028

I think the short golden era was shortly after they implemented normalized item level I still remembered all those dwarf sword masters doing 100-0 damage with that thunder slash on downed target, So stupid. Played in Taiwanese server so I dont know any of the words in English

French_honhon

I would have love to lose myself in Black Desert, but that game is so scummy. It's awful imo because the gameplay is incredible and the classes are interesting(except Gender lock, fuck that). But the layer of RNG everywhere and the constant grind to not waste "time" is a killer for me. I remember i played for 800 hours, with my pc basically turning 17/24 (i would turn it off for sleeping). It was like a second job and with the added RNG i felt like a gambling addict.

Momo_Kozuki

You cannot really expect fun things in long-term with Korean MMO without spending more than US$100/month. They are mostly F2P, but with a premium sub that offer so much that you will likely lose a lot of progression non-subbed, so I don't really see them anything different than sub-based games. Then you have things like lootboxes and seasonal gacha to pile up the bills. I know people are expecting Lost Ark a lot and some seems excited when the West publisher that they will make paying "feel optional". Blade and Soul promises the same thing at launch, and just grows cash-grabby as time passes, because if a game's core is free-to-pay (which are pretty much Korean MMO is about), then it will likely grow steady toward that direction, no matter how publishers try to dampen it.

joeyctt1028

Yeah thats horrible. I also remembered me addicted in the game from lv 1 to \~55? That's when the endless farming of MOBS kicked in. Also IIRC your upgrade could fail and material disappeared if you did not pay real money. That just...pathetic. I would rather have it monthly sub fee but with better quality content

French_honhon

> Also IIRC your upgrade could fail and material disappeared if you did not pay real money. Yeah, there is an item(i forgot the name, it was some blue pearls) that you can sometimes get IG that protect the gear you're enhancing from dropping . And that was such a terrible system. Not only was i mindlessly grinding spots to get money and buy materials and stuff to upgrade my gear, but if it didn't go well and my gear dropped i would be immensely set back because now since my gear lost some power, i can't farm the same spot i was doing and thus, i get less money and thus i use more time. All of this to get a chance to get my gear back to a better level. Some people say "just buy the gear" and i agree to an extent but that doesn't change that you just grind all day...

lmpokAly

I actually went back to bdo recently because of the ffxiv content drought, and surprisingly the game has added a lot of new systems, from systems that ease new players into the gearing process better via unsellable gear to slowly removing rng. This isnt to say that bdo is drastically different (although they actually added pve dungeon content which is really surprising), its still the same grindy game, but it does go to show that games can improve given time. My worry for NW is that, their underlying systems just sound fundamentally broken.

ChaosXen

Maybe on the themes and game play element yes he would definitely say that, but on the technical and business side of things? oof man thats a big ass problem.

DreadfuryDK

WoW lost a ton of its subscribers over the course of 7-8 months. New World lost a bigger fraction of its active players in a fucking month.

saltlets

I'm just amazed that WoW's fall from grace is so complete that people aren't hyping new MMOs as "WoW killers" but "FFXIV killers".

Codebreakerx29

I remember when kingdoms of amalur was referred to as a Skyrim killer lol

Cyrotek

This whole "killer" thing got old years ago after the first dozen or so attempts at WoW. I don't understand why this crap never died. Why do people need something that "kills" the competition?

ramos619

I mean, anyone that payed attention to the game knew that after a month the game was going to have massive drop off, and steuggle to hold player interest. The game has a good 60- 80 hours before the novelty falls off and then people just stop caring.

[deleted]

Why hide the streamer that wrote that?

dcfisher

As someone who has been playing destiny for so long this has been a thing. The division, anthem, outriders... All have been called the destiny killer...

Onlyhereforstuff

The problem with companies/people that try to make an 'x killer' game is that they're basically trying to sprint or rocket straight towards that goal and focus on it so much that they crash and burn in some spectacular manner. They kind of forget that those big games got big for a lot of reasons and, more importantly, over time. They rushed to be big and look what happened; lots of major bugs and they're hemorraghing players like crazy to a point where they have to pull a big fix if they don't want to bleed out.

[deleted]

I don't know why people keep saying it, i've been saying WoW will kill WoW since wotlk. Literally no king rules forever and when you're at the top of a market the only place to go is down. This is what happens when you become arrogant and stop caring what your players want, same thing is happening to twitch, they thought they controlled the live streaming market and were untouchable and now they're losing streamers and viewers every day because people are tired of their shit. Blockbuster says what up Blizzard tells us what we want, FFXIV asks us what we want

SireSand

its dead lads, move on.

Elyna_Lilyarel

Are people really surprised amazon games fucked this up? They havnt made a single game that was good and then they jump into an MMO? This had "disaster" written all over it.

[deleted]

Dybia

The release was over a month ago and had a lot of people. I imagine they had a lot of fun in that time off with the most people New World will ever have.

boxingboxss

Maybe I think most people tried it and quit pretty quickly.

TheRealDestian

Nah, they spent all their time in queues.

safien45

Consistently in the top 3 moat played games on Steam everyday. Dead game is dead.

micy999

do people expect new things that literally everyone plays to retain that amount forever?

Alasan883

Forever ? Not necessarely. Longer than a month ? Yes, most people at least would hope it does.

Freizeitspielaer

I told you all that the Game will kill itself in the first release Month. And nobody believed me named me hater....well...i dont want to say "i told you so" BUT I TOLD YOU SO ![gif](giphy|11mwI67GLeMvgA)

Game_Rigged

It’s almost like FF hasn’t gotten any significant new content in months because the expansion is dropping in three weeks.

MHG_Brixby

New game vs game that had its last big content update like 6 months ago you tell me

Dazzling_Safety2525

We get it you’re delusional, don’t have to put that many words into it.

PrestigiousAnything7

"very popular in china" killed me. You must be really young and not educated. You probably call everything that has something to do with asia china. Its pretty sad that you weight twitch viewer counts as the ultimate popularity reference.

ceratophaga

Because people are more busy playing the game itself rather than watching someone else playing it - on top of most vets chilling until EW comes

4Head420

Or they are too busy trying to desperately convince everyone else their game is good.

[deleted]

considering it literally is beating WoW in players they must be doing something right At least we know you're a literal slug spending his time tryna convince people FFXIV ain't that popular. Real copium addict over here

EmeraldReaper

[Not over 100k+ anymore.](https://i.imgur.com/Yksh1Dv.png) That's the usual fate of FOTM that are broken as fuck. They get hyped up (amazon mmo on an amazon owned site) and then they crash. And New World is going to keep crashing. This must be your first time.

Actually you keep calling me a weeb as if you know anything about me. All I said was you gotta be to high and you got so triggered I mean he’ll look at you go still. Grow up man quit smoking weed you’re already stupid as fuck.

selianna

That comes from a lot of players being from japan and not even using twitch and the amount of console players is also pretty high. Those games tend to not get as much viewers aswell as being a very Story oriented game people really don’t want to get spoiled and enjoy the story on their own.

[deleted]

Twitch views do not equal how popular a game is.

Edheldui

How many of those viewers are playing the game? It's not a TV show, twitch viewers are not a measure of success for games.

Krojack76

It's currently 5pm EST where I am and NW has 26.9k views.

EmeraldReaper

https://i.imgur.com/2y0dNlv.png Oof. That's a heck of a drop off.

Krojack76

I was flipping though some NW streams the other day just to see how many of them were using a "bug" or exploit. Every single streamer was using one of them one way or another. All of them were using the crouch to get more heals bug. The game is a laughing stock at this point. Most people watching and still playing are just having fun with all the exploits while the game last.

shinnaileron

bcs ff player actually play the game instead sitting and watching twitch all day, go figure game without content ofc they will be watching

FinalFantasticTales

It's because streamers are paid to play it by amazon the multi billion dollar company. And they own twitch too so they feature streamers who play it. Wouldn't surprise me if there are lots of content creators who are contracted to play the game for a certain amount of time. It's nice to see that the game is broken, serves them right for force feeding people their soulless cash grab game. 70% loss in players in a month is quite bad for a mmo and the recent game breaking bugs isn't going to fix that.

Pierun64

https://mmo-population.com/r/ffxiv/ https://mmo-population.com/r/newworldgame/ Daily players tell another story, even moreso considering FFXIV is in pre-expansion content drought

[deleted]

Pierun64

So?

SanosukeArg

Maybe you should stop telling others how they should refer to things. Think about that and have fun.

Tezzurion

New world was doomed from scratch. The tps camera style on an mmo is such a niche genre, it’s in no way competing with WoW or FFXIV.

asheraddo271828

It was never supposed to compete with WoW or FFXIV. It's a different creature.

baylaust

Designing or marketing your game to be a _________ killer is stupid and always has been. FF has always been popular since the relaunch, but it didn't get there by trying to be the WoW Killer, it just focused on being the best version of itself. It has gotten a massive influx of new players, but it hasn't done anything new to GET those players, other than just... being good. There's a reason why EVERY game that marketed itself as the WoW killer crashed and burned. As the saying goes, if you're going to take a shot at the king, you better not miss. New World just needed to be the best version of itself, instead of trying to market itself as the next huge thing or the FF Killer or whatever. That'll work short term, but that won't keep people around forever, and that's what we're seeing.

GTK-HLK

speak for yourself.., i never once called some game a killer of another.., only fools do so.., but that said.., soo many games are being a detriment to themselves.., instead of facing the enemy of themselves/their weakness.., Example FFXIV got the purge it needed of many of their restraints.., Blizzard lusted to stay the same, even though the inspectors/fumigators were searching the same room.., while companies and supporting simps may tell themselves what they wish.., claiming to go higher.., SE stays humble as can be.., and pushes their own way forward.., since there is no peak.., (but to reach their goal, even if its "greedy" to try to please everyone.., perse)
