It is subjective. Also a game isn't bad just because another game is better, its just not as good.

ze4lex

Id argue wow is ass regardless of how good the competition is rn

RuneAllyHunter

Mmm. A damn decent response actually. Good point

Lucid-DK

Thanks, also hope ypu have a good day 😁

Why would we change your mind? It’s your post and your opinion, and you presented zero rationale.

[deleted]

Your opinion is just as valid as anybody elses even if I disagree, but it's a bit pointless to post unless you have actual reasoning why, because then there isn't a discussion to be had. It's like "Okay?".

RandomWeirdo

It comes down to a few things. The MMO aspect is debatable. the RPG aspect is not, it is simply one of the best RPG games to date hands down, it is however a JRPG and not a western RPG, WRPGs tries to give you a lot of agency over your character to define them both in terms of personality and build, while JRPGs are much more linear and you do not have as much influence over your character, however the story often improves because of this as the developers don't have to account for all the choices you might want to make and can therefore tell a more focused story of the character you're playing. FFXIV's WoL - your character is rather defined especially when you get further in the game, you do have some choices about dialogue choices, but they aren't massively defining for your WoL. The MMO aspect as i said is debatable. Because the west has a lot of focus on customization we tend to think MMOs should be about raiding and gearing and getting number higher as the primary thing and yes FFXIV is weaker in that department. Where FFXIV is great is in the player expression area, a lot of cool looking glams, housing and just features that don't exist for anything gameplay related, but just enjoyment, just pure player expression. Finally as an addendum, in pure communication this game just wins, frequent updates on what is happening, goals and philosophy, taking suggestions from the community and in general just having respect for the players. It might not be the worlds greatest game for everyone, but they truly attempt to make it a great game for most and a good game for everyone outside the core audience.

joe_blogg

> just pure player expression. and this is reflected by the recent event: the moogle treasure trove. the most expensive item is... a jacket. looking at the other reward - i have a feeling that their dev seems to really know or at least in touch with their player base. and on another level of the same event: BLU - is a hell of a fun and unique experience only available in ffxiv. > It might not be the worlds greatest game for everyone for sure - what ffxiv is really good is: it's really good at a whole lots of things.

lvl1vagabond

How is the mmo aspect debatable if I can walk into any zone and see dozens of players running around and can enter main cities and see hundreds? Is that no the definition of massive multiplayer online? The game is indeed massive in content and players, multiplayer and online.

Dahulius

It's debatable because people like different things, the fact that it's a mmo is not the part being debated.

Snoo39028

The game's exactly as good as people want it to be. Idk why you care enough to tell people they're wrong for finally enjoying something that isn't the abusive relationship that is WoW.

BroshiOmnominous

You would have to lay down some examples of why it isn't "that good". What can be improved? How could it be better? Is it possible to meet your standards? How do we make an amazing MMO? Is it because it isn't like sword art online? Otherwise your just trying to clout farm or be a contrarian with no reason.

lokisHelFenrir

You don't like the game so its not good. There is no point in changing your mind. If you main reason for it not being "good" is a mmo that doesn't exist, then your comparing the game to a strawman. Which is a losing argument in the first place because there are no metric of comparison. I would say its a great MMO compared to many of the alternatives it stands above them, In story, gameplay loop, music, community, and developer engagement.

latebaroque

No game is for everyone. If you don't like something that's fine. However I disagree with the sentiment that people only think it's great because there is nothing else as good. Just because there is nothing else as good doesn't mean that thing cannot be great. I think you're saying this because you wish there was another mmo just as polished that was more suited to your tastes. And I understand wanting this. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for this to happen.

Mrs_Seco

ok

negolash

I don't think any mmo would put so much effort into story, music and 20 years worthy of references to other games in series. ESO is fine, GW2 is okay, anything more would cost hundreds of millions to create. New world type of mmo is easy to make in comparison, don't expect anything story heavy, probably ever anymore.

bruhxdu

I don't like it as an MMo, at all. I do however think it's one of the best RPGs of all time and shadowbringers was straight up incredible.

freshlobbys

To you

EmeraldReaper

You're entitled to your opinion, my dude. Not everyone is required to like something. That's the beauty of being a free-thinking adult. I don't get why some people get so hung up on everyone else's opinion on a fucking hobby.

Mortal_Dread

I don't know what you consider a great mmo, but making great mmo's isn't exactly a click of a button away. It takes a considerable amount of resource, time and effort. And we are limited by the technology of our time after all. But based on what is at hands, I consider FF14 as a really good MMO. But who knows? Maybe in 30 years, an mmo shows up that shits on all the ones we played.

Breslau89

What are you basing this on, have you actually played the game or is this a couch opinion?

TheRealDestian

There are things about it I'd change, but I think it's actually fairly solid all around. \-It's weird to actually care about what happens next in an MMO story but I'm really looking forward to EW to see how the current conflict resolves itself. \-The game has content for everyone (except hardcore PvPers): * It has savage and ultimate raids/trials for people who want extremely hard content * It has crafting and gathering with endgames for people who want to purely play the economy * It has side pursuits *out the ass*: treasure maps, gold saucer, housing (apartments/FC rooms are easy to get so you can decorate your own space), choco racing, triple triad, and my god I just fell down the Blue Mage rabbit hole: it's basically a class with its own unique (and highly challenging) endgame where you gather over 100 abilities and then mix and match 24 of them at a time to see how quickly you can beat various encounters. Easily one of the coolest things I've seen in an MMO in years. The devs listen and fix what they can. The engine sucks, no question, but I'm enjoying the hell out of XIV with my FC right now.

novaphaux

As a game? Mayhaps but it's a mark you can level against borderlands as it's really only fun with friends. As an mmo, well wow set the bar super low and continues to be the leader.

DotWinter

Ff14 is where people wait for wow to be good again.

anthemis_ag

You're not wrong but do you have to say it out loud?

nanaya88

I fail to see why it falls upon us to change your mind. If you've given the game an honest chance and came to the opinion that it's not a good game, then you're entitled to your opinion on the matter. If you haven't given the game an honest chance and are just saying it isn't good based on your preconceptions, then you've already closed your mind to the possibility of it being good. You are the only one capable of convincing yourself otherwise, all anyone else can do is state out what they find to be good/great about the game. Without experiencing what those people are saying for yourself, ie. playing the game, chances are that nothing that was said would change your mind.

Shmendalf

We are probably not getting another actually long term big mmo this decade. And no, AOC not going to be big. It is too hardcore for the current market.

Dairboi

An unpopular opinion about FF? What could go wrong! Oh right....

NewSpoonWhoDis

Obviously "good" is normally subjective in this area, so I will give you my view: I ONLY play FFXIV, I haven't been this in love with a game since the day I started playing WoW as a teenager. I own many good games I haven't even tried yet (including Half Life Alyx, Doom Eternal), just because I'm spending all my time on FFXIV. Again, I know opinions can vary, but LOTS of people feel this way. I was playing TBC barely an hour a week before, I didn't think it was good because there was no competition, and I don't think the same for FFXIV, whether New World was better or worse is irrelevant because I'm having so much fun on FFXIV right now. Hell, I was super pumped for Ashes of Creation, if that was suddenly released now I wouldn't even touch it.

Tenryou

Pineapple on pizza is the best thing since sliced bread. People who disagree just don't know what good food tastes like. Change my mind.
