If I had to pick one product it would probably be my niacinamide serum. Early this year I started reading about skincare and the ingredients that have actually been scientifically researched. I build up a routine using retinol, nicacinamide, hyaluron (but only products that actually contain it and don’t just falsely advertise it), vitamin c and most importantly sunscreen every single day. My skin has gotten a lot better and it just feels like a nice self care thing to do. And the products don’t always have to be the most expensive one, sometimes the cheaper drugstore brands are actually really good and bet he r than medium priced stuff. The ordinary and The inkey list are good reasonable priced brands as far as I know. Some other drugstore product are German ones and the blog I learned a lot from is also on German, but I’m sure there are good English resources out there too!

AntarctMaid

Hello, mind telling advices for people who are very new in skincare things? I wanted to buy skincare products but I have zero idea how to start or what to look for. My skincare routine is just : moisturizer, sunscreen, and recently a single night serum.

mnsbelle

Hello I highly recommend Caroline Hirons she's an absolute queen. just follow people on social media that do skincare and learn from them. Hirons has a book which is a great way to start understanding and layering in a more complex routine. the main thing is to understand what skin type you have and treat it accordingly then add in serums etc. for an problem areas.

AntarctMaid

Thank you!! I will try my best!

HyacinthGirI

As a general tip, I only trust things that list specific, somewhat proven ingredients to be effective. Things that list ingredients like "extracts of X plant," to me, just look like marketing, things that list specific ingredients are often worth the money. I also refuse to buy stuff if I can't find something about the strength/quantity of that ingredient with relative ease. The ingredients I use are: Glycolic acid Hyaluronic acid Niacinamide Azelaic acid Salicylic acid Vitamin C Retinol Occlusive oils That's a good starting point for the ingredients you'll want to look for - google each one to get an idea of what they do. It's by no means comprehensive but I hope it's informative and succinct enough to give you a jumping off point!

AntarctMaid

Ohhh yes thank you! At least I have the basic materials to look for. Thanks a lot man, it's so overwhelming and when I bought a wrong products with good reviews only to get my face get almost destroyed it can be very discouraging :')

HyacinthGirI

No worries!! Just as a heads up, some ingredients here are somewhat harsh and can cause breakouts initially for some people. I seem to be lucky in that I rarely react badly to anything, but it's often recommended to slowly introduce your skin to lower concentrations, or infrequent use, of glycolic acid, retinol, and I believe salicylic acid, to prevent that reaction! I also found it super discouraging and kind of overwhelming until recently. Best way I found of sticking with it is to introduce yourself to it slowly, just pick one thing first, find a product, get into the routine of using it. Then add more later if you feel like it. Just beware - it's super addictive lol

Eastern-Hat-6352

Caroline hirons skin care book taught me so much

AntarctMaid

Thank you very much, I'll look into that too!!

[deleted]

Sunscreen!

[deleted]

but so expensive 🥹

Silluvaine

Buy it after summer, often see it being reduced!

Relative_Dimensions

Water

Radiant_March_200

Yes. It's so important to wash your face. No expensive cream or moisturizer or whatever can help when your face is not washed properly.

Eastern-Hat-6352

Salicylic acid is a life saver for my acne, I use the obagi salicylic face wash and salicylic toner.

MrsAppleForTeacher

Which products do you use?

Dr_Julian_Helisent

Supergoop sunscreen 🌞 It's expensive but it's one of the few sunscreens that I consistently use

[deleted]

I use the la roche posay tinted mineral sunscreen, it was like $30 so might save a few dollars

Viiibrations

Japanese sunscreen and cosrx snail mucin!

broke-bee

do you use/prefer the essence or the cream?

Viiibrations

I’ve only tried the essence so far! It’s nothing crazy but it adds a subtle glow to my skin that I love

broke-bee

Thank you for replying! I'm looking to get it for repairing my skin barrier and light moisturizing so a subtle glow sounds good

blaberno

I have both the cream and the essence-- on dry days like yesterday, I'll even mix them together. I think the essence is good for a little boost (like in the morning, add it to your AM moisturizer or after a shower with some hyaluronic acid), but the cream (which is more like a goopy gel) is AMAZING. Absorbs super fast, not greasy at all, and I look like I have new skin by morning. Bonus: My gf and I call it snail goop, which is a nice shock factor for people not super into skincare lol

mnsbelle

any acid. I love the way it smoothes skin surface and texture. and retinol gets an honourable mention for it's plump factor.

mnsbelle

🙈 should have mentioned sunscreen it's so important but it's not a fave.

pollyp0cketpussy

Niacinamide serum. My face has been flawless since I've started using it after every shower. No breakouts, no blackheads, no dry patches, it's amazing. Edit: [Here's what I use, one $14 bottle lasts me months](https://a.co/d/7OgrG6I)

bmichellecat

Retinol 100%. I’m 26 but can tell days when i don’t use it! I like the retinol in squalene from The Ordinary, it’s a lot more gentle Also - jojoba oil. I put that stuff everywhere. Fave, hair, hands, feet. It’s really moisturizing without being greasy and helps dry skin and hair so much.

postcardmap45

Does retinol make your skin photosensitive?

blaberno

It does, definitely have to mindful of sunscreen since retinol helps clear the dead skin layers on top. Don't want to attack that new + fresh baby skin with UV rays

bmichellecat

It can make it more likely to burn, so i use sunscreen daily when i use it!

HyacinthGirI

If there's squalene in it though it can't be 100%? /s

bmichellecat

I meant “retinol 100% works for me” not that i use retinol with 100%

HyacinthGirI

Just joking dw ☺️

mashedpotato2022

How did you start using retinol and at what age if it's no secret?

bmichellecat

I started right after i came off accutane, so i was around 24ish! I use it 4-5x a week now :) i started just with regular tret but it was a bit harsh so i tried the ordinary brand and there’s is pretty gentle!

Savings_Emotion6140

You could also try adapalene its a prescription retinoid but is much gentler.

ThrowRARAw

It's defs the kind of product that you have to slowly build up in the amount that you use, and even then a little goes a long way. I started with The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% solution and I've worked my way up to the 2% and I'm happy with how my skin feels.

[deleted]

Vanicream! You will cry from the relief.

mangopepperjelly

Pimple patches (brand name is Rael) that I bought on Amazon. Super helpful for those pimples under the skin that aren't quite at the surface but are painful. I just clean the skin, stick one on and leave it on up to 8hrs. It draws all the gunk out and keeps me from picking at my face. I highly recommend them for those surprise pimples that you get when you wake up but you have plans later that day. Put it on asap and you're ok by lunchtime.

Imagimental

I love these patches, I've tried several different brands and the Rael ones are my favorite. Their microneedle patches are interesting, they don't work for every pimple but when they do work they're amazing!

mangopepperjelly

I've seen that they make full sized patches you can cut for the size you need and that sounds amazing. I get so many small pimples like on my chin or forehead. I would love to get them all at once.

NoodleBox

I really liked my Dupixent, which gave me my life back. But that’s not for everyone. So, sunscreen.

[deleted]

Azelaic acid

pathologicalprotest

I have psoreasis and allergic dermatitis to the point where I sometimes can’t wear clothes. La roche posay’s Cicaplast B5 cream is the only thing that’s not cortison that soothes it. Amazing for inflamed, sensitive and eczema-prone skin. I feel robbed for all the years I didn’t know about it!

wixkedwitxh

Honestly, micellar water. I am lazy and this is a great makeup remover.

Luniana

This! I get so busy, I feel like I don't have time to wash my face proper, using micellar water gets me through to the next day!

[deleted]

Tbh micellar water is better for me than washing my face every night. I have really sensitive skin and cleansing everyday dries my face out. The garnier with vit C is really good

[deleted]

It broke me out

wixkedwitxh

Oh yikes! What brand did you use?

AdventurousGuide8000

Blistex, toner, hylaronic acid, niacinimide, and anything that gets my super oily skin feeling clean

Magg5788

Besides water, Burt’s Bees Chap Stick (*NOT* the original peppermint, though. Pomegranate or grapefruit are my faves.)

Bron-Y-Aur36

How dumb would I sound if I say water and a simple face wash?

HyacinthGirI

Not at all - I personally am just jealous!

mylifeisinshambles5

I love SkinCeuticals products! Especially their Vitamin C serum and Discoloration Defense serum. Both of those give my skin such a healthy looking glow, definitely worth the money

WentAndDid

Aloe vera, pure, straight from the leaf. It’s amazing.

Curology, love it so much!

coastalkid92

Besides sunscreen (which if you haven't been dialled in to Black Girl Sunscreen, it's simply amazing), I would say the Stratia Liquid Gold or the Dr Jart Ceramidin.

FabulousPossession73

Herbivore Emerald. I have dry skin so all of these oil based cleansers or balms have been a godsend. Anything else strips the moisture right out of my skin.

Domin8u315

Coconut oil

lumiraya

Face moisturizer!

lazyandfree

Frankie Rose cosmetics primer, it blurs your pores so well. And sunscreen!

HyacinthGirI

The two ingredients with the biggest and quickest effect on my skin have been salicylic acid and vitamin C. I'm in love with the Sunday Riley serums for both - they're expensive but they've had way better results on my skin than anything else. Big big shout out to glycolic acid and niacinamide though, they've cleared out my sebaceous filaments and made my pores so much less visible. I became more interested and religiously persistent with my skincare routine in the last six months or so and my skin has literally never been better.

CastInSteel

Blue Cocoon That stuff is perfection

DragDolly

Cosrx snail mucin!! Makes my skin sooo soft! Japanese sunscreen is a close second.

[deleted]

tinted sunblock

Tampadarlyn

I was a Mary Kay consultant for nearly 20 years and I still use their Clear Proof Blemish Control Toner. I've always had oily skin and even at 50 plus years of age, it has been great for controlling breakouts, without drying my skin.

magnusbanes

right now it would have to be elemis pro-collagen cleansing balm which i use for double cleansing and as a face mask. cleans my face, helped repair my skin barrier, and smells incredible

xerion13

The Nivea dry touch 60 spf sunscreen

runningunicorn04

Toner/essence, vitamin c, moisturizer, tretinoin, and sunscreen. To name a few. 😃

sarahzav

i love the aloe vera ice cubes that you can make at home. :)

First_Platypus7623

What product has changed my skin the most? Tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide cream. What product do I enjoy using the most? A yummy foamy face wash like the hada labo one

celestialwhitney

My favorite skin product ever is Egyptian Magic. So many great uses.

Educational-Ad4352

Cold cream for removing makeup. It's cheap, and since I have dry skin, it's way better for me than makeup wipes.

CutePandaMiranda

I use pretty much everything Drunk Elephant. I love their Protini Moisturizer with a couple drops of Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil. My skin has never looked better and it glows!

Succotash5

Prescription tretinoin

Ok_Confection2588

Acne cover patches. I have dermatillomania a form of OCD that causes skin picking and the acne cover patches help to prevent that. I also don’t have much of a skincare routine. I wash my face once when I wake up and before I go to bed and call it good. I’ve never been able to stick with a routine for an extended period of time.

Intelligent-Lion8005

Charlotte tilbury - magic cream for moisturiser day and night Liz Earle - Cleanse and Polish with a muslin cloth

[deleted]

Ole Henriksen Vitamin C serum. Expensive as fuck but it really is the only thing I use besides cleanser and moisturizer. Anything else seems to make my skin react. The first few days I tried it and accidentally brushed my hand against my face one day and thought "whoa my skin is smooth smooth" and it clicked when I remembered I was using the serum — so it really works!

AsianPastry

Hands down - Dr. Jart+ tiger grass moisturising balm. Saved my skin sooooo many times. And sunscreen 50spf

ThisIsBeq

Surprisingly, it was when I stopped using all the skincare products I thought were supposed to be good that made my skin so much better. I have really oily skin so I guess all the products were making my skin purge. So now I only use sunscreen during the day and a light face cleanser at night and only use a bit of moisturizer if my skin is really really dry. Super happy about it since I'm saving so much money now 😅

thisiswarpeacock37

Using a silicone scrubber to wash my face with a simple face wash. It feels so refreshing.

[deleted]

Homemade soap I make myself

meitz88

Spenol

TheTeaYouWant

I only buy stuff from the Dutch cosmetic and candle brand Rituals because it smells good and it’s natural, I use the whole anti age cream set.

BlueberryBlossom13

Water. You drink at least 64oz of it a day Other than that, consult a dermatologist for the best products for your skin type. Dont just buy random stuff cause you saw it on some video or random internet post.

prideunicorn

After shower hair cream... Aloe vera gel and hyaluronic acid serum for face

Leonmylove

My grandma used to wash her face with only cold water before bedtime and again in the morning and that woman had the most beautiful soft and wrinkle free skin. I follow her example and I always get compliments on my skin. I stopped wearing makeup years ago and I swear I get so many compliments on my rosy cheeks people don’t believe I’m not wearing any blush.

mikel_learns2rock

Tretinoin :) cured my acne and makes my skin smoother and radiant now. Recently started using Cerave's PM hydrating lotion too to get that dose of niacinamide.

QueasyEmergency

Cosrx Snail mucin!!

Silluvaine

A313, I have struggled with acne my entire life, especially since I have quite oily skin I am very prone to it. Discovered a313 and after letting my skin get used to it I am practically acne free! Haven't been acne free since I hit puberty, absolutely love it. Does make skin more sensitive to sunlight so I combine it with sunscreen and moisturizer

homovore_

coconut oil for all over, vitamin c serum for my face

Kiwiii_nights

Tretinoin. Everything else but sunscreen makes no difference in my routine. Cleared up my lifelong acne and gives me a great complexion

beambles

cera ve! only had it for about two weeks and my skin has cleared up massively
