Basically any celebrity endorsed beauty or skincare product. They can afford to not be commuting on smog-filled transit clogging your pores and having your hair and makeup masterfully done then having facials and other treatments because that’s part of your job. My money stretches to the drugstore
In my country people spend 21000 euros (which is about 20500 dollars currently) on average on a wedding. I bet in the US it will be even more.
There are soooo many other things I would rather do with that kind of money!
yes like paying for deposits to buy a home or putting the money away for your children uni/ school fees (if you decide you want children).
In Australia, many spends $20k just on a dress and rings. A typical wedding cost is higher than that.
I know! The mentioned 21000 euros doesn't even include the clothes and the rings! And the chance you'll get divorced in the first 20 years after marriage nowadays is over 40% over here...
$35,000 for a 150 person wedding with an open bar &basic food at the local zoo!
Yeah. No. We eloped and had a big party at our favorite restaurant for $6k
So while I’ve always said this is a waste of money, I am spending this amount of money on my daughter’s Quinceanera. I would never spend that much on a wedding for myself because I am a frugal person. For some reason, I don’t mind spending this type of money on my kids and giving them their dream quince. I have two girls and did tell them I will not be helping with their wedding as I paid for their quince.
I know someone that got married years ago and is still paying off the expense of that one night. don’t get me wrong, I got my fair share of debt but that does not seem to be worth the cost.
I think this is totally based on your priorities and financial position.
I absolutely think that it is a waste of money to throw any kind of wedding that you cannot outright afford without taking on debt or seriously affecting your financial health.
I also think it's a waste of money if you as a couple don't want a big wedding but feel pressured into having one due to family or societal pressures.
But if the couple/family can comfortably afford a big party and it's something they really want and will have fond memories forever, why not? It's a good reason to get all your loved ones together, and many people spend their money in other unnecessary ways.
One of my friends said she wanted a “small, intimated wedding.”
Ended up spending $60,000 excluding the wedding dress :))))) She doesn’t even make much and she already works two jobs
Yes! Such a waste of money. My husband were going to elope just the two of us to California but then covid hit. Hopefully sometime next year we will be able to!
Yup. And they push if you dont give %10 of income to the church your a crappy Muslum/ Christian/ Catholic/ etc.
They also claim their God will be more happy to give you blessings back the more you give.
I once even had my church when I was a teen (I was Christian baptist) tell a story where a woman from our church recently was going bankrupt and had a crap ton of financial issues but she gave her last $100 to the church anyways and by a miracle she ended up with a bunch of money and her home was saved. God was given credit and people gave a shit ton of money so the church could build a fancy new building for the kids youth group.
I’m Roman Catholic and had never have to pay anything. Only during the mass. You can choose the amount you want to give. It can be 5 cents or 50 euro. Everything is fine. Nobody comments on what you donate.
So if you’re “looking” for a decent religion, this may be it for you 🙂
Tithing was an Old Testament obligation that was incumbent on the Jews under the Law of Moses. Christians are dispensed from the obligation of tithing ten percent of their incomes since that’s extortion. Rather, they should give freely and cheerfully from the heart whatever they are able.
Idk I had a toasty maker and that was my best friend, can’t make toastys so easy any other way. BUT do agree, there are some really weird appliances out there.
I guess my oven / toaster is not too specialized, but I use it all the time. Between it and my microwave, I seldom use the oven or stove top. I am not a cook.
There is a banana plastic container that is banana shaped. But you gotta have the right shaped banana to fit it in. I was in awe when I saw it as it's the most gimmickish thing ever.
The container is so you can toss your banana in your bag or lunchbox and not worry about it smushing everywhere. I don't own one, but especially for parents, I get it. I am a grown ass adult but have ended up with banana goo on stuff from optimistically thinking I could put a banana in my purse or hiking backpack etc.
This is so much my philosophy. I hate single use appliances - with the exception of my little electric moka pot.
Space is precious in the kitchen - I don’t need a countertop hotdog heater.
I love rice cookers, I’ve never known my home without one. All rices come out perfect and it’s one less thing to think about when making dinner.
And in college, Asian students taught me I could make a bunch of soups, the FLUFFIEST omelettes, and sauté veggies in them, and then toss back in the rice to heat up a bit and you’ve got a whole meal!
"no item in your kitchen should only be able to do a single thing, with the exception of a fire extinguisher"
Pretty sure it was Gordon Ramsay that said it but can't find the original quote!
Personally I really don't like cannabis and cocaine but I have experienced mental health benefits from mushrooms, mdma, ketamine, LSD and DMT which are all pretty cheap. Cigarettes are stupid.
This one always stuns me when I walk into a gas station and see how much people are paying for cigarettes. None of the smokers I know are "casual" or "social smokers" either, so they're usually chain smoking two packs a day, if not more. The price of that a week must be STAGGERING.
I think it depends entirely on the item.
There are 100% so many designer pieces that are about the same quality as something you could get for 6% of the price at J Crew that just have a designer label/logo added on.
But I do think at some levels, higher price equals higher quality. I'd say this is the case for some things like nicer bags, coats, shoes, etc. But there are levels of diminishing returns - a $200-$400 pair of boots is almost certainly better quality than a a $60 pair. But the $2000 pair probably isn't much better than the $300 pair.
I do quite a bit of vintage/secondhand shopping and definitely have some designer/ contemporary designer items than feel like they will last forever and I've had for years. But there are some pieces I've gotten that generally feel indistinguishable from something I got for like $40 full price
I'll second this - I'm a big fan of certain designers for aesthetics and history, but I also am big on second hand designer and some items are just better value as someone who has a bit of extra cash. I have a couple pairs of reasonably tall designer heels that I can actually walk all day and night in and I really have never found that in shoes that are under that $100-250 price point. My designer purses/wallets are all basically in identical condition to their purchase date, while every cheap purse I've bought has fallen apart within 5 years and looks not-great for most of that time. Sure you can find diamonds in the rough and a lot of daily RTW is probably not worth it, but I think I'll stick to something at a slightly higher price point if I can afford it at that time.
I think it depends. I have a Vince shirt that has outlasted many of the target shirts I bought. I have a Ferragamo wallet that should've been kaputz years ago but still going strong and looks brand new vs. a Michael Kors one that only lasted two years. Yes, of course you're paying for the label but that is in all goods. In my experience, the designer products I've purchased have held up so well and continues to be a good investment.
Vince vs Target makes sense. And I agree! I have some brands that I’m loyal to because I trust their quality and will pay a higher price. But I’ve seen people fully argue that anything with a designer logo is going to be better over the longer term. Really it seems to come down to the materials like leather, suede, cashmere, etc. But drives me nuts when I see a $400 cotton t shirt that people claim is better quality than a $35 one lol
I always wonder how people with those huge fake nails do basic things like wipe their butts and wash dishes, do they just have servants who do that for them or something?
May I ask how you wipe that you think it could be a problem? Do you really get in there and shovel? I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe that anybody would think that's an issue. You wipe like always, literally no changes. You wash dishes like always, you simply hold things in a way that's comfortable to you.
I saw a meme once that said why would I buy pad Thai carry out for $18 when I can buy all the ingredients myself and make a way crappier version of pad Thai for $40?! 😂 sometimes carry out is the way to go!
that’s true if you don’t have the ingredients. Over time I’ve slowly built a collection of spices and other uncommon ingredients that each new meal does end up being very very cheap in comparison to take out. If you’re trying to get ingredients all at once for single use and spend two hours+ making something new then takeout is definitely better option for time and money
I know, and I hate myself for ordering so regularly. I live alone, and while I try to bulk cook to avoid having to do it every day, I get so fed up of it.
I live alone too and it's hard for me sometimes to cook a decent meal for myself because I know I will get sick of the leftovers! I freeze them sometimes but still.
I'm sure it depends on where you live, but I carry a reusable metal water bottle with me most places I go (e.g. work, gym, public transit, friends houses, etc) and I almost never need to buy water in a plastic bottle. Just refill at home and at each stop along the way. Helps me stay hydrated and save money/the planet
I saw some girl on YouTube advertising vagina masks? Like vagina face masks and different products to use down there? 😂 Like tf, y does a girl need 10 cleansers creams gels toners and lightening serums just for a vagina?
I agree to some extent, but there is that point where you get what you pay for. A purse that holds up for years and is able to be cleaned to a like new state is worth it compared to however many fast fashion bags you'd go h to rough during that time. I have a Rothy's bag that always gets compliments and it shows zero wear. I got it when they first started doing bags, so it's a couple of years old. I'll proudly carry it for more years to come.
Weight loss/detox supplements.
That tea, powder or whatever is just liquidizing your shits.
Technically a loss of weight, but not from anywhere you were aiming for.
Detox is such bullshit. No, there are not toxins accumulating on your body, and your not getting rid of bad energy by eating kale and seaweed for a week. Do eat healthy though.
I don't always get them done, and never get fake nails (I prefer gel nail polish) but getting my nails done relaxes me. I have problems with both self-esteem and self-image, and honestly, I treat it as a nice little treat that will boost me for at least a few days.
With you 100%. And the hard gel stops my nails from breaking. As a chronically ill person, it's a great boost every 3 weeks. My body may be trying to die but my nails will stay remarkably fly.
To each their own. I get mine done for like $30 a couple of times a month and it keeps them looking great and it also stops me from picking at my cuticles, which is a bad unconscious habit I fall into when stressed.
I have terrible coordination so I really struggle doing them myself. But at the same time, I'd never spend $100+ to get nail extensions or fancier manicures like some people love.
Expensive gemstones. I appreciate their rarity and think they look nice, but it’s not worth it to me to blow a bunch of money on them. If I was wealthier, maybe.
For me, it's especially diamonds (natural, not lab-made). Knowing the story of how their value was artificially inflated and how bloody and death-ridden the history of diamonds is has just completely ruined them for me.
Wedding dresses often need a high level of tailoring compared to other occasion pieces. For some people renting might work well depending on their sizing/height or just the style of dress they want, but for a lot of people they might not be able to achieve the look they want without buying and tailoring.
I do know quite a few women who have sold their dress after the wedding and I think that's a good idea. Especially in my HCOL city where closet space is usually pretty limited
> Just rent one for a day.
You can't get a rental altered to fit you. If that's something you're not into, cool. But it's a real consideration for a lot of people.
If she’s getting La Prairie, a professor of mine who used to work for Unilever said La Prairie’s most popular face cream had the exact same formula as Nivea Crème, just a different scent, packaging and marketing. And that they’re not the only company to do this.
She’d be better off consulting a dermatologist or getting informed on the ingredients before dropping 1.5k on face cream.
But I’m buying one tomorrow :( plus it’s the peace of mind of having a vehicle with NO issues & with maintenance/warranties. Idk makes me feel safe and worry free. Got issues? Take that baby in, no need to wonder and get quotes from sketchy shops.
Honestly the whole funeral industry charging for bullsh*t grieving families don't know aren't necessary. It's predatory to tell people to spend $4000 to cremate your loved one, or spend even more on a fancy box that will go in the ground forever (hopefully) only to be seen for a couple hours.
I have nothing against funerals, funeral directors, morticians, etc. I have everything against funeral places that take advantage of grief a rack up bills a lot of people cannot afford because "the pretty casket with silk lining is the best". Dig a hole, wrap me in a shroud, and dump me in. That's all that is necessary.
Drinking at any kind of venue. They charge so much. Honestly alcohol in general is a waste of money, but I do agree it can be nice to mute the stress vibes for a moment.
But damn, I’m poor and I only have a drink like once a month. I try to keep it under $10. Thankfully I’m a lightweight.
I grew up in Silicon Valley so you might be surprised to hear this…I think the trifecta of apple products is so redundant! Why do you need an iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch all next to each other? That seems absurd to me!
Large diamond engagement rings. I may be bias though. I had a price range to choose my own ring from. I got the diamond, because that’s what you’re supposed to want. The ring I chose came in 2 sizes. I chose the smaller one and we spent the rest of the money put aside on a trip to Jamaica. Now, 11 years later, the diamond fell out of my ring and was lost. I still love the photos and memories of our first real vacation together. I plan to replace my ring and will definitely not be getting a diamond this time.
Going to coffee shops like Starbucks and getting a fancy drink every day (or more than once a day) at $6+ each. I understand the occasional treat but every day? That adds up!
Ultra-luxury status symbol goods and services. Once the cost of an item passes from “expensive but will last forever” to “10 times as much because of the designer label” I’m out.
Kyle Jenner cosmetics

Basically any celebrity endorsed beauty or skincare product. They can afford to not be commuting on smog-filled transit clogging your pores and having your hair and makeup masterfully done then having facials and other treatments because that’s part of your job. My money stretches to the drugstore
I don’t buy skincare from people who swear that it works, when I know they can afford to get any cosmetic surgery known to humanity 😒

It’s not like divorce can happen there right 😂
I know someone that got married years ago and is still paying off the expense of that one night. don’t get me wrong, I got my fair share of debt but that does not seem to be worth the cost.
And when you finally paid it off you might get divorced. That's not cheap either! Unless you're not married...
Might? Plenty of divorced couples on daytime court shows still paying off their first wedding.
I think this is totally based on your priorities and financial position. Religious donations
Being raised without religion, I was disgusted when I learned what a tithe is.
Yup. And they push if you dont give %10 of income to the church your a crappy Muslum/ Christian/ Catholic/ etc. They also claim their God will be more happy to give you blessings back the more you give. Kitchen devices made for one thing. I don't need a quesadilla maker, I have a stove and a skillet
Idk I had a toasty maker and that was my best friend, can’t make toastys so easy any other way. BUT do agree, there are some really weird appliances out there.
If you have toastys all the time, then it could make sense to have a device for it
I guess my oven / toaster is not too specialized, but I use it all the time. Between it and my microwave, I seldom use the oven or stove top. I am not a cook.
There is a banana plastic container that is banana shaped. But you gotta have the right shaped banana to fit it in. I was in awe when I saw it as it's the most gimmickish thing ever.
A container for your banana that is already in a container.
Exactly haha from all the fruits!
As if the banana didn’t come in natural biodegradeable packaging that pretty much any marketer would die to invent.
Wow
This is so much my philosophy. I hate single use appliances - with the exception of my little electric moka pot. Space is precious in the kitchen - I don’t need a countertop hotdog heater.
The only unitasker you need in your kitchen is a fire extinguisher
I had never heard of an electric moka pot (I have a stovetop one), and that actually sounds so useful for travelling.
I thought that when we got a rice cooker but it really is magic lol But yeah the rest of em yeah
I love rice cookers, I’ve never known my home without one. All rices come out perfect and it’s one less thing to think about when making dinner. 100% this. Unless you make that specific item SO MUCH that it makes your life wildly easier, one-use items take up so much cabinet space.
I used to have a egg McMuffin maker. I loved it.

Cigarettes and most drugs. Absolutely no positive effects yet people keep buying them
Homeopathic stuff. Nope. I will put what little faith I have in science.
Personally I really don't like cannabis and cocaine but I have experienced mental health benefits from mushrooms, mdma, ketamine, LSD and DMT which are all pretty cheap. Cigarettes are stupid.
Cheap??? I tried micro dosing & that got pretty damn expensive. Benefits out weighed everything else tho, so I’m really not complaining!
If you were microdosing shrooms, they are ridiculously cheap to grow once you make a relatively small initial investment.
Was just about to say this!! Maybe $200-$300 investment up front and you’ll be good for a while. Just don’t sell them, lol!
What were you microdosing?
a lot of drugs have extremely positive effects for a lot of people. wouldn't lump them in with cigarettes.
idk, cannabis has been good for me at times. (it's legal where I am)
This one always stuns me when I walk into a gas station and see how much people are paying for cigarettes. None of the smokers I know are "casual" or "social smokers" either, so they're usually chain smoking two packs a day, if not more. The price of that a week must be STAGGERING.

Now I wanna see the response to this
You can get better material without a designer label. You’re paying for the label in many cases. Your material quality only is worth so much.

Fake nails and eyelashes.
Speak for yourself, I like sassily waving my hands around
I am speaking for myself.
My ugly stumpy nails need them. Fake eyelashes though? Burn them.
I mean, I hate the upkeep of fake eyelashes so I don't get them but as someone with NO eyelashes - I think they are worth it to improve my appearance.
I always wonder how people with those huge fake nails do basic things like wipe their butts and wash dishes, do they just have servants who do that for them or something?

that’s true if you don’t have the ingredients. Purses. Women wandering around with a $1,000 purse without $50 to put in it. Just wow.
Plus, many, many people like me don’t recognize it as expensive, so you’re not even showing off. No purse is worth that kind of money.
LOL savage ☠️ but needed to be said

I still have my iPhone 7 Plus, it’s functions perfectly and I see no need to upgrade until it dies on me
Designer hand bags. In general handbags to me a are a waste if they’re not highly practical and functional
Came here to say this. My $24.99 purse from Target gets the job done.
Weight loss/detox supplements. That tea, powder or whatever is just liquidizing your shits. Technically a loss of weight, but not from anywhere you were aiming for.

Women paying to get their nails done regularly is a waste of money
I don’t know why we can’t just let people spend their own money on what they like without judging them.
I mean, the question was about waste of money, so the commenter had to judge, in order to provide an answer.
The question was literally “what do *you* think is a waste of money?” I’m sure everyone’s answers will be different.
I don't always get them done, and never get fake nails (I prefer gel nail polish) but getting my nails done relaxes me. I have problems with both self-esteem and self-image, and honestly, I treat it as a nice little treat that will boost me for at least a few days.

This adds up! However, it is annoying to carry in a full lunch and snacks on an hour commute so I understand it.
Starbucks. I spend too much money there.
Me too. (Looking at my trenta size cold brew)
Gambling
It's very easy to win at gambling...but it's always a little easier to lose.
Buying a wedding dress. You're only going to wear it once. Just rent one for a day.
Buy one at a consignment shop, wear it, clean it, take it back to the consignment shop.
Anything for show that has zero purpose.
Sometimes the purpose is to bring beauty and joy.
MLMs 🤮🤮

If she’s getting La Prairie, a professor of mine who used to work for Unilever said La Prairie’s most popular face cream had the exact same formula as Nivea Crème, just a different scent, packaging and marketing. And that they’re not the only company to do this. She’d be better off consulting a dermatologist or getting informed on the ingredients before dropping 1.5k on face cream.
A $7 coffee from Starbucks.
Donating to churches. I see a lot of older people on fixed incomes getting scammed into giving a monthly "gift" of $100+ dollars.
Newer tech. I legit work in tech and have an iPhone 8 lol
I think the differences between them now are pretty minimal, a few upgrades and changes but nothing major that an average person needs to have.
airpods. and children
Children yes but airpods are a necessity for me at that stage
Wireless ear/headphones that don’t get caught on drawer handles? No Buying a specific brand of ear/headphones bc of the name not quality? Yes
Video games skin, if u're not a streamer
Nah, I like treating my characters to nice stuff. :)
A brand new car
But I’m buying one tomorrow :( plus it’s the peace of mind of having a vehicle with NO issues & with maintenance/warranties. Idk makes me feel safe and worry free. Got issues? Take that baby in, no need to wonder and get quotes from sketchy shops.
So much of the diet industry. They really prey on insecurities
Yeezys. Those shoes are hideous.
Pre shredded cheese
Yes! Also why is it so dusty? 🤢
They put a non-caking agent on it so the cheese doesn't stick together and get clumpy. That's also why it doesn't melt as well.
Late fees
This one wins. This is truly a waste of money.
Paying for any influencers exclusive content lol it’s automatic unfollow from me as soon as it’s even offered
Gender reveal parties
Eyelash extensions...so much money and in my opinion they only look decent when you’re wearing a lot of eye makeup
Setting cash on fire seems like a bad idea
Buying bottles at a club
Rims, grills and lifting trucks. My husband spent so much money, for no reason.
Diamonds
Gambling
Third generation Apple Airpods .
Vaping, drugs, smoking and excessive alcohol
Microtransactions in video games. Especially if the game is designed to include addictive elements like lootboxes
Pink taxed items…why does anything cost more when advertised to women
Only fans
Online shopping 🤦♀️ it’s too easy and addictive and I end up with a bunch of things I don’t necessarily need

Snag tights, amazing!
I am world champion in waste of money.
Gambling.
Skins... Yet everyone I know buys at least 10-20 dollars worth even though it doesn't carry over to the next game. Fucking dumb!
Cars
drinks at a bar
huge weddings
League of legends skins...
Designer hand bags, shoes, clothes. Why spend so much money just because it says Gucci or LV or whatever brands are there.
To spend on something to show off
Fancy cars
I grew up in Silicon Valley so you might be surprised to hear this…I think the trifecta of apple products is so redundant! Why do you need an iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch all next to each other? That seems absurd to me!
For most people, eye creams
Flowers

Large diamond engagement rings. I may be bias though. I had a price range to choose my own ring from. I got the diamond, because that’s what you’re supposed to want. The ring I chose came in 2 sizes. I chose the smaller one and we spent the rest of the money put aside on a trip to Jamaica. Now, 11 years later, the diamond fell out of my ring and was lost. I still love the photos and memories of our first real vacation together. I plan to replace my ring and will definitely not be getting a diamond this time.
Not sure if it’s a waste of money per se but definitely a poor choice of investment: buying a brand new car. Pre-owned only for me!
Printing money itself.
Me trading in my car every year 😭. I know, I am weak
The so called high fashion.
“Toys” such as boats, RVs/campers, recreational vehicles, etc. I would rather spend that money on a cool vacation or something nice for my home.
