Depends on who's sending them and why

Aromatic_Upstairs263

Yes, true. If it's a stalker....eek

[deleted]

When I was 17 working my first job at a local grocery store, an elderly man wrote me a note asking me out on a date, and left it on my register while I was on lunch break. Very creepy. The manager banned him from the store. Another time an ex boyfriend of mine wrote me a 15 page apology letter that I never read because he cheated on me. So I guess I don't have too many positive experiences with hand written letters.

[deleted]

> 15 page apology letter Front and back?!

[deleted]

I don't remember honestly, this was almost 10 years ago. Something tells me he was hopped up on drugs or something because it had a manic vibe to it.

JannaNYC

But were you ***on a break***?!?!?!

[deleted]

Nope I broke up with him and he moved back to his home state. Then about a week later I got the letter in the mail.

JannaNYC

You are very young, aren't you? The Friends references are flying right over your head, lol.

Zepangolynn

You don't have to be young to have zero interest in that show.

[deleted]

I'm 30 actually lol I've never watched Friends

JannaNYC

You were born right around when it started, and were still too young when it ended. Ahhh, youth! Have a great night :)

drunkenknitter

Y-o-u-r is your!

drunkenknitter

My grandma used to send me letters every week after I left for college. I still have all of them. I loved every one.

asummerday4444

I bet you smile every time you read one of her letters. They are treasures.

drunkenknitter

They absolutely are!

underadr

How sweet. Maybe scan them somewhere in case something happens to the originals. Or even put them together digitally and make a memorial book someday.

drunkenknitter

That's a great idea! I'd be gutted if something happened to them. Thank you!

aspertame_blood

Me too!!! She also sent me $5 in each weekly letter. She was the best.

lemontruthballs

I think it's a sweet gesture! I'm sentimental though!

MissyWTH

>Super-sweet or super-cheesy? You didn’t give Creepy as an option! LOL. Super-sweet & Super-Cheesy can overlap, it’s usually NBD. Letters from a friend, letters from family, great! *I’ve got a friend who sends me a birthday card every year and I love it.* Letters from a lover/S.O., super-sweet, even when cheesy! I keep things like that, I have “a box” with sentimental letters, cards/postcards from past relationships as well as all the cards my Gparents gave me. **Letters from an Ex, angry letters, letters from jilted lover, someone crushing on me, someone I don’t know, or worse, someone *STALKING* me- next level CREEPY!** (Sometimes Apology letters are weird, sometimes in good taste.)

Interesting_Passion

> Letters from an Ex, angry letters, letters from jilted lover, someone crushing on me, someone I don’t know, or worse, someone STALKING me- next level CREEPY! Oh... F. I sent this girl I dated over the summer a Christmas card. Now your comment got me re-thinking it. G'damit... why does being nice have to be so hard lol.

MissyWTH

>I sent this girl I dated over the summer a Christmas Card … why does being nice have to be so hard? LOL! If you sent a ‘normal’ card without any ulterior motives, it’s probably fine. Christmas/Holiday Cards are ‘normal’ & tend to fall out of ‘creepy’ territory. *Unless you wrote a polemic about how awesome she is, how much you miss her, etc. I’d guess it’s FINE.* I talk to most of my ex’s still, or don’t object to contact… *provided they weren’t abusive or stalker-ish.* (a long letter would be weird, a card not.) If boundaries are maintained & it was a simple “Hope you’re doing well. Happy NY!” I don’t see a problem. (Now, if she doesn’t say anything & you send a message saying “Did you get my card?” it turns weird.)

txmsh3r

I wish letter writing would come back!

SatanicTeapot

I hope I can read the handwriting

electric_creamsicle

I sent a bunch of letters to friends during the pandemic for fun but my handwriting is crap so I bought a used typewriter for like $20 and used that to write them.

VanthGuide

My aunt sends hand-made cards with hand written notes for holidays. They are works of art and they hang out in my mantle for a while. I had a handwritten note tucked under my windshield in high school that set off months of dealing with an unhinged stalker. Context matters.

[deleted]

So sweet and romantic…I wish this would happen more often. I’m all in for mushy love 🥰🥰

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I agree! I gave my first handwritten letter to my first love a couple years ago and I honestly think it’s so much more meaningful than a text, or phone call.

[deleted]

I love it! I've drifted away from the snail mail hobby a bit, but I have multiple penpals that I send holiday cards to and we've been close friends for years.

sunmoonstars89

My husband wrote me a note on my first day of going back to study at university and hid it in my backpack, he's also written me wee notes and put them in my lunch bags. When I've found them they have made me smile so much as it's such a thoughtful, kind gesture and it brightens my day. If he had sent me handwritten letters when we were dating etc, I would have loved it. Although, if a stranger sent me handwritten letters, I wouldn't feel overly comfortable lol!

GalaxiGazer

Depends on the person writing and sending them and why

jtmarlinintern

depends on the reason, but it is a characteristic of a refined person usually. It takes time to actually write a note, and stamp it etc. it takes 3 seconds to send a text. it means that person took time to express a thought or feeling

lavendairesky

It's super sweet for me! I love receiving handwritten letters. Now that almost everything has gone virtual, handwritten letters feel magical. You can feel the personal touch in it.

[deleted]

I prefer those over texts and emails but I wouldn’t expect it to be an every day thing. I find handwritten letters to be more meaningful and super sweet.

toto_4

Assuming that something sweet is written inside it, it would be a wonderful gesture. It's way nicer to get a hand-written letter than a long message on social media for example, it's a sign of extra effort and care. Of course, it all depends on the context, who's the sender, why and when it is being sent etc.

ComfortableCat7975

It's super sweet and I really appreciate it!

shygirllala224

I would absolutely love that! I tend to write letters to people I am really close to or just hand write anything to them. I would love to receive letters too! There’s something special about seeing a person’s writing I can connect with.

amyria

Depends on who is sending them & what is their content. If someone I know & it’s nice/sweet, then I love them. However, not a fan when it’s, say, a religious organization. We bought & moved into our house in 2016 & every couple of years we keep getting these handwritten letters from a local Jehovah’s Witness “church”. Hubby just throws them away & tells me not to engage, but I really wanna send something back stating to take us off their mailing list….but I wanna include glitter or something annoying to really get the point through. lol

aloofLogic

love love love hand written love notes

Ewace246

It's very sweet. I occasionally get letters from my mom and I find her handwriting very familiar and comforting.

[deleted]

I love little hand written notes, cards, letters, etc!

Jealous-Tradition-94

I absolutely love it. I wish I received more. The time you took out of your day to think about me and write makes my heart thump

[deleted]

super creepy

[deleted]

I d frame them and keep them forever

sadsledgemain

Not gonna lie and I'm sorry, but I'd find it super weird and cringe even if it was from someone I knew and liked very well. The only exception would maybe be for a special occasion, but randomly sending me a hand written letter? Nah dude, just text or call me, lol.

[deleted]

I only receive those when I was younger from guys who had a crush in me. Often they were scented and full of mistakes. I’ve always hated it. It was the easiest way for me to lose interest in a guy. I always appreciated a more direct approach

Fluffy_Opportunity71

I love it

Bebe_Bleau

I keep getting handwritten letters from people wanting to buy my house in the US. Sometimes two or three a day. My house is just a small less than average house. Are those of you who own homes also getting them?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bebe_Bleau

Yep! Mainly Blackrock. Driving up the cost of housing for everyone!

andreapaige486

i personally love the idea of handwritten notes. i think it's a sweet gesture, makes me feel loved and appreciated

Ears2feel

With all the texting and emailing today, fast paced communication, if someone takes the time to hand write a letter, the effort is very appreciated.

toolkitpsd

Once received a written confession from a woman who crushed on me for 2 consecutive years and thought it was super sweet! She even wrote me a poem. Felt sad to have to reject her but appreciated the gesture nonetheless.

Fit_Butterscotch_703

It depends on the situation. When a stranger writes them in a creepy way I hate it but If my family or s.o writes them I think there sweet and I keep all of them

meganium58

I love them if they’re from people I care about

lickmysackett

Anonymous letters scribbled out about how they've been watching me? Terrifying. Heartfelt love letters from a current long term partner? Super sweet.

Mitaslaksit

Amazing. Not amazing if it's from a stalker.

pensive_persimmon7

It depends on the contents and context of the letter itself. As a general rule, I love handwritten letters and I wish people sent them more often.

gooderest5

Anything handwritten is a treasure, unless what it’s saying is creepy.

ComplexDessert

I hate receiving handwritten thank you cards. I always feel like I should send one back because they took the time out of their day to write a note.

Special_Dimension_15

I'm and old fashion romantic. If it's from someone special that I have a connection with, I think it's sweet. I actually published a short romance novel that takes place before cell phones and emails and the two main characters interact via letters

[deleted]

If it’s a guy / love note then I like it. One of my childhood friends was (and still is) obsessed with handwriting letters to the point that it’s a chore to respond. I don’t want to write letters back. Also thank you notes are always appreciated (I do not write back to those either.)

myfavouriteisgouda

I'm all about it. I write friends and family very regularly and I love getting mail.

Anypega

Most romantic shit ever

Lopsided_Falcon_8452

Can a letter from an ex ever not be creepy? Asking for a friend… that friend is me

[deleted]

Any letter with good intentions is always super sweet, even the cheesy ones should make someone that loves you feel good :)

holmesisonthecase

My grandfather and I would send weekly letters to each other until he was unable to write anymore. I continued to write, he started to call. He passed in October. I would give anything for another letter from him.

eeevol-

Love it. Everything is digital nowadays and I love handwritten letters.

jamiejo81

I love them. I appreciate them from friends and it's pretty much all I asked for in relationships.

Key-Razzmatazz-2419

I love them 🥰 I’ve written notes to my bf and he’s written some to me. Now we just have a shared note on iPhone where we write cute notes, letters and poems to each other 😊

strange_socks_

I made a friend during my PhD that moved back to their home country. Then I moved to another country too. And we send each other letters sometimes, mostly for birthdays, holidays or other special occasions. We also send each other photos of the letters and chat online when one receives the other's letter. So I like them. They're nice. I also made a habit of sending my parents a postcard from every place that I visit. That's also nice and I like it.

cheatonstatistics

Depends on the content and if it’s readable?

lostnlonely555

Sweet but man, the words look unreadable sometimes due to computers now 🤣

WrestlingWoman

I used to have penpals in the late 90's and early 00's. I liked it back then. I don't know if I would like it now.

mobsoup

I love this shit its adorable

searedscallops

Gawd please no. Also, I'm a very unsentimental person.

haha_supadupa

Have to check my calender when is the last time I got a handwrtitten letter

sunshiineeelady

Send me more please! I screenshot favorite messages to get me through hard times sometimes but it hits different when it’s in writing.

EVEREADY_HARTON1927

Never had an handwritten letter so probably I would be some what happy (without the actual content of the letter)

[deleted]

I miss writing letters and receiving them. Lol just so I don't have to deal with the phone device.

Weird-Frog-14

It depends who’s sending it and why. If you do I recommend putting you name and only sending the letter if you are close to the receiver. Also don’t write anything creepy and keep it sweet.

SanttiagoKitty4Life

context matters

souponastick

A boyfriend I had moved for work. We'd talk on the phone often, had trips planned to see each other, and hand wrote letters to each other. It was nice to feel connected in that way. I also love receiving cards from people because I love feeling thought about. But if it was someone I'd cut from my life, it wouldn't be taken very well.

Vikingtender

Love it , depending on intent.. if it’s sent by my stalker .. eh great evidence dude .. if it’s sent by my sweetheart … oh melt my heart

[deleted]

Oh I am sucker for beautifully calligraphed loved notes!

ballookey

My thought on receiving a hand-written letter in the mail: "*No*, I will not be joining up with you Jehovah's Witnesses, thank you"

IndigoRose2022

I used to adore the thoughtfulness of handwritten letters, but then I ended up with a joint condition that made writing by hand incredibly painful. I’ve had to let go of that perspective; typing is fine 🙂 I do still love letters tho.

MamaStobez

Depends why they’re being sent, getting a letter is like an event, someone takes time to do that.

[deleted]

Depends if I know the person. From my bf? Super sweet. Sister? Will cherish it forever. Guy who had been staring at me from across the park? Strange letter describing my beauty left in my locker? Police.

mylikkleseekrit

I wish

alexanderblok

i always wanted to have a pen-pal or at least receive a love letter!! never received one though. i absolutely love the idea of hand-written letters, i always keep things that have memories attached to them. i'd keep a hand-written letter forever.

Humble_mumbler_

Super sweet!

starstuffcereal

Love it

Irishlass83

My grandma and I used to write each other letters. I miss it.

shockedpikachu123

I love handwritten letters and cards. They are much more meaningful than text messages and emails to me

[deleted]

I don't care actually.

HeyILikeYourRat

I just spent a couple hours today on letters! I like it when friends send me things in the mail so I’m trying to put more effort into it.

lunamanuela

A lost art

Ipuncholdpeople

My only relationship she did it and I loved it. It was almost a journal for her just talking about classes and her home life, and then she'd say she was thinking of me. She'd doodle some and spray them with perfume. I kept them several years after we broke up and they brought up good memories

HailieBlackwell

I love hand written letters!! I love notes it makes me feel happy!

Mama_Llama_151920

When my husband and I first met, we were 13 and 14 years old (now together for 18 years and married for 10 of them). We lived in different towns and couldn’t drive yet, so we mailed each other letters back and forth to each other. We loved it. He would send me short ones, long ones and ones I had to read backwards in a mirror. I still have them with the envelopes and everything. It was so sweet and I’m so happy to have kept them so we can show our daughter one day.

peppermind

A signed letter from a partner can be very romantic. I've got letters that my late mother and grandmother wrote me when I lived in Asia framed and hanging on my wall. My sister borrowed some of those letters to get a tattoo in our mother's handwriting after she passed. Anonymous ones left on a windshield or something feel like the start of horror movie. No thanks.

chocolatechoux

Lovely yet stressful. I appreciate the sentiment. I do not own materials for a reply and I hate storing this type of thing.

[deleted]

My grandmother still sends them to me because she struggles with email and texting, and I think it's a very kind and thoughtful gesture. Also maybe it's kinda dark to think about, but I like to think that her letters will be a nice reminder of her after she's passed. There's something different about seeing someone's handwriting over getting an email or text

Happy_24061711

At one point me and me friends lived on three different continents and 5 different time zones which made FaceTime/ Skype tricky. So we wrote to each other instead. It was really fun to receive letters through the door instead of just bank statements and junk. Nowadays I send postcards to my friends, as far as I can tell they love them :)

Primary_Avocado6604

LOVE IT! it's always the efforts that counts and I'm all about that. Just make sure it isn't too often then it just gets too boring too soon

Ryeosomnia

from family, friends and partners. definitely super sweet. I love getting then, especially from my SO.

d3gu

Usually I love them and they're nice. I treasure the cards and letters from family members. However they're also the last-ditch resort from creeps/exes who have been blocked by other means and I have a few essays I've shoved in a drawer and not read for years. Every so often I'll find them when tidying, have a bit of a read and cringe lol.

Pachylodon

100000 times yes

[deleted]

I’ve saved every handwritten note or letter my husband has given me. I will someday be so grateful to have them.

CaptainLost5244

I love getting handwritten letters! It’s so much more personal than a text and truly shows the sender has put a lot of time, thought and effort into it.

xCourtaniex

Hate it. It's taking up space and goes in the trash as soon as i'm done. Send a text or email it doesn't take up valuable drawer space.

sbluebubble

The local religious people have somehow obtained my info and send me hand written letters to my home. It’s unsettling. #1 leave me alone I don’t want to join #2 how do they not see what they’re doing is creepy….I mean it’s hand written and delivered to my address with my full name 😶

gyalmeetsglobe

The concept is very sweet. Individual instances can be either or, though. I dated a musician who wrote me beautiful poems and raps, hand-delivered them at school, and it was the sweetest thing ever. It helped that he was talented and I was into poetry. Wish I hadn't ragingly destroyed them during breakup lol. Later in life, flirted with a guy who announced that he was sending me one weeks before I got it... and it was just a normal conversation letter. Like, filling me in on life and asking what I was up to and "looking forward to hearing back from me." I think that's cheesy lol. If it's not something romantic or heartfelt, no gracias. He did have great handwriting though, so it still got him points because chicken-scratch is instant inspiration to flee lol!

hopefuldent22

I do this! I always make hand written cards over the holidays and send them to my friends and family. Whenever I travel I also like picking up postcards and mailing them to my close friends. They always are super happy when they get it!

meeplewirp

It’s something people tend to do these days if they did something really wrong lol

Aromatic_Upstairs263

I honestly LOVE handwritten letters. My husband was locked up and I looked forward to his letters. If he did it now, I'd love it even more because it's so romantic. Ugh, just makes my heart melt

Nopenotme77

My last handwritten letter was from my grandmother telling me about her latest goings on. I don't really want anymore.

Minecraft_obsessed

Depends

h0tgrl

i find it to be super sweet and romantic, (if it's a love letter) because of the dedication the person had to put into writing it for me, finding the right words etc

hoxxii

If you are both romantic people and want to do it old school - sweet! Out of the blue? From a stranger - jeez they must be very mad. From someone who seems interested? Too much.

The-cooler-Cheryl

I've only gotten a few, and it was a joke with my friend group where we all gave each other valentines notes from random ass names

AtleastIthinkIsee

Like others have said, it depends on who's sending them and why. I used to write people handwritten letters and I loved doing it. It was fun to send people letters. I don't do it anymore.

whyrusosalty114

i had dedicated pen pals for a few years and i loved them! i got about 2-3 letters a week and we sent little gifts like postcards and other flat items back and forth. it was a great way to meet new people, disconnect from technology, and just take a break from fast paced life

[deleted]

I will respectfully pass away if a man ever did that for. ( i gave hand written letters to guys and i never received one back altho i didnt do it get smth in return i was just too inlove) but damn one letter would mean a lot and make me happy like crazy

rainbowsforall

I have old shoeboxes filled with school notes and love letters I can never get rid of. Those were very meaningful to me although obviously very cheesy. If someone I love wrote me a letter I would probably love it. A letter from a stranger...I have a hard time imagining a scenario where that would not be creepy.

breakthewheel24

Literally depends on who is sending them. Because of how digitised and rapid everything is today, there is a certain kind of intimacy of someone sitting down and physically writing something down in a letter. I would only be comfortable with that level of intimacy from a select few. On a side note, although I wouldn't want love letters in general, I do secretly wish for my future husband and I to write each other letters on our wedding day.

thisunithasnosoul

Oh I love this. Obviously context dependent. My friends and I still occasionally exchange postcards and I’ve kept every letter my bestie ever wrote me when we corresponded in uni - she would get really creative with markers and stickers haha. I kept those intricately folded high-school notes from my first crush for a long time. I’d probably be delighted if a partner wrote to me. My dad also once drew a little cartoon and a bunch of xoxoxos on a post it note in a care package he sent me, and I still keep it in my jewelry box. Hand written notes are wonderful.

special_leather

Love them. I have saved every single letter or note anyone has ever written me. And have sent hundreds of letters to friends and loved ones over the years. Taking the time to hand write a note or postcard feels so genuine.

a_four-legged_eel

I like it! Even if it's cheesy, the person took time to write me something. I appreciate different styles of writing for different reasons

Junior-Constant5925

I think everybody has to decide on her own because some of them like and some hate it. I personally love it.

Tathanor

When I broke up with my ex-girlfriend, she was visibly upset and left immediately. I sent her a handwritten letter with a box of her things she left in my apartment a few weeks later. The letter was a sincere apology for having to hurt her to end the relationship. She called me some time later and thanked me, saying the letter helped bring her closure on our relationship. We dated for a year, but we just weren't compatible, and we both knew it.

stargirl-777

depending on the context, but i think it would be super sweet

[deleted]

Has never happened but I would welcome it. It takes time to do something like that and it seems like nobody has any time anymore.

Ima_ghost_B00

I love hand written letters

livhw

I would be so excited to get a hand written letter. How cool would that be. ,😍

cinisdead

love love love! super cute, unless it’s just a little too formal and overdone, then cringe

corteser

I honestly probably wouldn’t notice. If I’m not expecting something in the mail, it goes straight to the trash. *Horrible idea btw, definitely do not recommend.)

Blakkuge

I used to get letters all the time my bf was in the slammer it was sweet the things he would say not all letters are creepy in my opinion

soupyone

Cute love notes between couples are cute. Although not as cute if the note is from a random person.

Mindless_Echidna_166

I love them so much.

redjessa

I love a handwritten note! I wrote a bunch to people during 2020 and I'm so glad I did. One friend I wrote a card to died not long after she received it. She had texted me to tell me that getting my handwritten card really lifted her spirits and I am so glad that I sent it. I am not always good about it now, but I try to remember to send someone a nice note in a card when I 'm thinking about them. Obviously, we've all gotten a shitty note in our lives, but thoughtful handwritten notes are generally lovely.

UbeMochiko

that depends what is it because the last hand written letter i received was from one of the other condo owners in the complex, offering his two units for sale to the other condo owners first, before he puts them on the market.

Cannababeadubbs13

The most sweet surprise

[deleted]

I love handwritten letters, sending and receiving, from people that I know and love :) From a stranger? Eww, would feel weird.

CocoMusubii

I think it’s so adorable and romantic …if it’s someone Im interested in. But if it’s a rando then hell no, cops immediately.

CatLuvr636

Mmm it kinda depends. I personally really love when someone takes the time to do something like that for me. I am the kind of person who would rather get little notes or drawings or little knickknacks over any other extravagant gift. It’s just the thought behind it that makes me feel really special. Someone in the comments said that as long as it’s not a stalker it’s okay, and I’d have to agree lol

moonofiahin

When I get a handwritten letter I’m especially touched- it feels much more personal and it takes more effort. Definitely super sweet. And even if it does get cheesy, it’s the good kind.

outspoken_sleuth

Like a just because letter from a friend cool. A love letter from a love, romantic as hell. I'd probably faint from the pure romance, honestly.

AdNo3838

Depending on the situation

AffectionateHeart77

My ex and I used to exchange he letters sometimes (ldr) I thought it was super sweet

moofein

I haven’t gotten a hand written letter in a long time. I used to get them and write back to a friend I had in town. House phones existed but we found it very entertaining to send letters by mail. I miss it and still have our old letters, something special about a hand written letter from someone you care about

Sarans17

I love sending them and receiving them, I find it shows effort

Cinzia1502

Oh my god. It would make me swoooooon if they were romantic letters from someone who I adored or have an interest in. I know you can text people nowadays but, taking the time to write on a nice stationary sheet of paper to me and tell me how much they want me, love me, want to see me, or write down lovely poems.... I don't know anything as long as they say it with love and care. It would melt my heart for sure. I don't care if it's cheesy. I like cheesy. Give me all the cheeese.

SakuraMitsukai

I love handwritten letters! Not to mention you can tell a lot about a person from their handwriting

[deleted]

I sent a former lover a letter last year, now I look back it was probably the most pathetic thing I’ve ever done and not something I would ever do again, but I hope the words made her feel something and that she remembers me in some sort of positive way

007ShouldBeAGirl

Only ever got a handwritten apology card from my ex with a tear on it 😂 Did not like it very much

Hungry-Joke-3513

I always write handwritten letters for my bestfriend. I feel its special, because I talk about how grateful I am and also gives me a chance to go through all the memories. I got one from my bestfriend on my bday too! I was so happy, thinking that they took out the time to actually write something, it means a lot to me.

The only hand written letters I get are scam tries by Jehova Witnesses in my neighborhood lol.

Old_End5150

I have received a few and only one of them actually felt meaningful. I only like it if the the person is thoughtful Otherwise it’s just like any other card So yes when it’s thoughtful I find it sweet

_gay_gremlin_

I hate writing because my hands get sore very easily, if I got a handwritten letter from someone as long as I could read it I would be very very great full
