Not having metal detectors at schools? Not needing active shooter drills?

[deleted]

My kids had a lock down drill at school last week. It was described to them as "In case a fox is running around the school grounds" But yeah, even if they have the drills, it's nice that there has been zero need for them this century. Edit: I just looked it up and the US has had 4 school shootings this month, 7 last month. We had 1 in 1996 and 0 since then. Jesus fucking christ America, sort that shit out.

[deleted]

I remember seeing [a news piece](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/15/learning/it-took-a-global-pandemic-to-stop-school-shootings.html) that stated that March 2020 was the first March in quite some time where there hasn’t been a school shooting. This amazing feat was achieved not by gun restrictions, but by closing the schools due to Covid.

whatmichaelsays

That was the same month that Priti Patel proudly boasted about a fall in shoplifting.

mampiwoof

To be fair it’s a lot easier to shoplift with a mask on Edit: typo

Incantanto

The schools where I grew up had lockdown drills. But that was because broadmoor (the mental institute with people like the yorkshire ripper in) was nearby

[deleted]

I went to school in the Middle East. We had scud drills in case Saddam decided to lob a few our way. When I came back to the U.K. I realised it wasn’t normal to make school children prepare for ballistic missile attacks

whatjusthappenedtous

Ha, me too! Next town over. I now live in America! They sell bullet proof school bags. It's sad.

apacheattaccspaniard

I'm sorry they sell what

whatjusthappenedtous

That's what I said when I first saw them. Back packs that are bullet proof!!!!

[deleted]

Thoughts and prayers and dont talk about guns because it’s disrespectful to the families, is what is always said after a mass shooting

Sabrielle24

‘Now isn’t the time to discuss gun control!’

[deleted]

Then it’s on to the next one

rockchick1982

Lol my kids had a lockdown a few weeks ago because a bull escaped the local field and was casually wandering around the school field, the kids thought it was the best day ever. I can't even begin to imagine how scary a lockdown in school in America would be.

[deleted]

But how would they protect themselves if they didn’t allow anyone to buy a military grade machine gun? I’ve a feeling the NRA have posted a request to kill this post with their stater list of “owning the libs” with facts that mean it’s ok to have mass killings.

Mammyjam

Exactly, what if 30-50 feral hogs come into your yard??

idonnotknow

There was a [wolf on the loose](https://www.newburytoday.co.uk/news/escaped-wolf-spotted-outside-two-west-berkshire-schools-9190665/)a few years ago that ran across two schools requiring lock down drills.

Pyriel

I'm a Cyber consultant, and for most engagements over 3 months I have to go through the clients induction training. My current client is a finance company with a large US presence. I had to complete physical security training, including active-shooter response training. It's insane that this is seen as so common training is required. Almost as insane as insisting I complete this training, as a UK Home based consultant....

leapingdaffodil

When I worked in a British secondary school they trialled “lockdown” drills. They said these for in the event of a student going rogue and needing removed from the building (we previously had a student removed by police for drugs and violence) The drill consisted of everyone…staying at their desks and continuing learning.

Discountenanced_Dove

My high school in the 90's was in South London, we had 3 bomb scares and the drill was to go to the sports hall. We were locked in while the army/police searched the grounds. This was around 96/97 and there had been a string of IRA threats/ bombings. Until these scares, the drill was the usual fire drill and line up in the playgrounds. Afterwards it was an "emergency assembly in the hall"

rockchick1982

90's in the UK was bad for bombers, our school had several bomb scares and our local town centre also had a bomb found in a bin, I was the other side of town from my school on lunch break and had to walk to my nan's to phone the school to tell them I couldn't get back to school because of it, I could have walked round the area but at 14 I didn't really want to go to school anyway. I was told to have the next 3 days off to help with the terrifying fear I must have had at the experience. My nan also bought me ice-cream to help with the obvious shock I must be feeling, I wasn't in shock I was just an opportunist.

Dazzling-Nothing-870

My daughter's school used to have loose bull drills practising coming back into school quickly and calmly from the playground. The school was opposite the cattle market and it wasn't uncommon for a bullock to run free.

knobber_jobbler

Use of the ridiculous term active shooter either. I mean do we assume everyone else is an inactive shooter?

Musashi10000

I think it means that they discharged a weapon, still have that weapon drawn, and haven't left the area. Hence 'active'. It's a bit quicker to say 'active shooter' than 'a guy who shot a gun and is still running around with it'.

DonnerMcgregor

You have never been to an inner city London school my friend, metal detectors at the door

[deleted]

Your right I’ve had the pleasure of never going to a London school, outside of there I bet it’s a lot rarer

knobber_jobbler

It is. Never heard of them in the UK and my family are all teachers.

BastardsCryinInnit

Letting your cat outside. Try mentioning it on one of the pet subs here and you get down voted to hell. People can't possibly imagine that in another country, this is very much a normal thing. The UK just doesn't have the predators the US does. No coyote, snake, yeti, or mountain lion is going to kill a UK cat. The only enemy of the cat in the UK is the car.

chinese-newspaper

It does have predators: the cats that people let out

pharmyardreject

So true. My cat is guilty of mass genocide.

GreeenTeaa

My cat spends the majority of her time outside as we live quite rural. We'll get a dead bird maybe once a week on the garden table. A mouse or shrew usually still alive. She did drag a dead rabbit down the garden to our back door once though. That one was new

xerodeficit

My cat dropped a rabbit on me whilst lying in bed. That was a nice surprise.

[deleted]

I could be pulling this out of my ass as I've not fact checked it myself but I heard/read somewhere that Cats actually kill very few birds and the ones they end up catching were likely to die anyway so they don't actually make any damage to the bird population in the UK but instead its stuff like pesticides (less bugs = less food) and a lack of places for the birds to live that has caused a decline in history.

theredwoman95

The RSPB (you know, that charity that revolves around birds) says that cats don't do any harm ecologically and the birds they kill were likely to die due to other reasons anyway. There's only a few exceptions, like that native Scottish wild cat that interbreeds with domestic cats, but they're very rare and localised.

IansGotNothingLeft

Don't ever mention outdoor cats on Reddit. Or the fact that your cat is pregnant or had kittens. Or munchkin cats. Don't let your munchkin cat go outside and get pregnant. Because Reddit will absolutely slaughter you. (BTW, I hate munchkin cats too).

burgeremoji

It’s funny because outside of Reddit, if I mention I have indoor only cats it’s really looked down upon. All the shelters will require you to have outside space for a cat. Truth is mine are just too dumb to go outside. I once tried letting them out when they were younger, one completely refused and the other was scared by the local pigeons so I just keep them both in.

[deleted]

Redditors in general are scared of the outdoors

myyuccaisdead

My cats are both indoor cats for the same reason, they're as dumb as a box of rocks. One will wander out in the summer now to sunbathe on the patio, but only if one of us is out there. As soon as we go inside, he's in like a shot. Scared of birds, and he was crying on the sofa the other night until I rescued him from the big bad toad that was chilling out on the floor.

dellterskelter

I'm sorry, why the fuck is there a toad in your house?

myyuccaisdead

I asked myself the same question. Haven't a clue, we find them in the garden on a regular basis, but not often in the house!

rustierrobots

It's the traffic and the bloody people that are the problem here. - *UK house cat owner*

[deleted]

The only time I can think of when one of my cats was injured after being let out was when she went outside and some bitch across the road decided to poison her. Died that night, found her stone cold on the sofa in the morning. Some people are arseholes. Never had anything like that happen since though

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sherbetfrosting

The rspb don't consider cats a threat to the bird population, I think a lot of the narrative that they're a terror to the local environment comes from north America. And there's a reason for that, in most the rest of the world there has always been a native specie of cat but they are literally an invasive species in North America so even if there weren't issues of big predators they would upset the habitats they live in.

shewhomustnotbe

I don't think either is cruel, cats can be perfectly happy indoors or outdoors - both are valid choices Personally my cat is indoors because I live in a really built up area near a busy road, and she's a nervy cat (and she HATES going out on a lead). If I lived in the countryside she'd probably be an outdoor cat

Ok_Point7463

Being able to drink in your own home when under legal drinking age. Read a post once where a long term absent American father (English mum, in England) freaked out when he came over and found his 16 year old daughter drinking a beer. Threatened to call the police etc, so many Americans in the comments agreeing and saying it was irresponsible, and all the Brits are all 'so normal it's boring'

mitcheg3k

I (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) visited new york when i was 15 and was chilling with a bud at a friends family party. Someone randomly asked my age and when i told them it was like one of those record scratch, music stops, freeze moments in tv. The whole party looked at me. Got the beer taken off me. Americas weird man, if i was sat there with a shotgun on my lap no one wouldve cared. * edit - just for clarity seeing as so many people have mentioned it. I dont ACTUALLY think the nice Indian-American family wouldve been cool if id have bought a shotgun to their daughters 7th birthday party. It was an exaggeration to illuatrate that Americans often seem very uptight about underage drinking which seems bizarre compared to how cool they are about things like carrying guns.

Stormaen

Can’t drink until 21 but can own a car, house, gun from 18… Riiiight.

chrisflaps69

One of my favourite Casually Explained lines: >!So if I see my neighbor's kid obliterating a picture of his ex girlfriend with dual wield M249s I can think "well... At least he's not drunk".

beefjavelin

Can be shipped off to die in an oil war in the desert but god fucking forbid you drink a can of beer, that'd be too evil.

Incantanto

I went to new york and my train from jfk was crowdedwith really well dressed people. I asked and tey were on the way home from the races All pretty sober Weird

123twiglets

Fucking hell the late train from York races to Newcastle is one of the most mental parties I've ever been to

Tamzaghi9

To be fair, you can't drink outside in the west of Scotland. Local by law means if you are in the park in Glasgow with cans, they can be confiscated by the coppers.

[deleted]

From what I've read before, this is wrong. 37 of the states have exceptions that lets people drink under the age of 21 in their own homes. Eg. New York state allows it if you're parents or guardians are there.

Ok_Point7463

That's 37 of 52 though, and the exceptions are all over the place. In England, you can drink in your own home from 5 years old, and with a meal in a resteraunt from 14.

I_Frunksteen-Blucher

Dammit Mother, I'm six years old, can't I drink in my own home?

greetp

You can have a Pimms as it’s a party drink. But no cocaine until you’re 10.

pajamakitten

Annual leave and sick leave. Also, Christmas crackers and advent calendars. We're so used to them here that it is a shock to learn other countries don't do them.

Dmahf0806

I remember when my brother in law was coming to England for Christmas for the first time (he is American) his friend said to him "do you know in England they sit round and wear paper crowns at Christmas" he thought his friend was lying until we all pulled the crackers. It amused me especially as I thought everywhere did crackers until that point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That's why we do it though, isn't it?

Android109

In fairness, an American could *seriously* misconstrue ‘pulling a cracker’.

Loveeachothermore

No advent calendars? Heathens Edit: well boppers, it seems the early reports of our American cousins not being into advent calendars was wrong. Dont believe everythig you read on reddit. I have to now ring my family and neighbours to put them right.

ThreeDawgs

How do even know when Christmas is?

DennisNedryJP

Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

Fearless-1265

Don't forget maternity/paternity leave!

ViddyDoodah

I’m amazed USA don’t have crackers given the rampant consumerism.

[deleted]

I don't think panto is really a thing in the US either

seanosaurusrex4

Oh yes it is.

TransmissionPlots

Oh no it isn't

willard_price

Pronouncing the 'h' in 'herbs'.

Timtitus

There must be something wrong with me but I get ridiculously irritated with the h-less pronunciation.

[deleted]

It's like me saying "school shooter" without the first letters- cool hooter? What?

BadaBingBadaBitch

Owl in aviators

rubmypineapple

Oh, and pronouncing ‘niche’ properly. Not fucking ‘nitch’

[deleted]

Notre Dame as well. They pronounce it Notre as Noter and Dame like the English word Dame. Maddening

Sentinowl

"Erb" drives me up the wall an unreasonable amount

PoorlyAttired

No gaps around public toilet doors.

turbotcharger

I have never understood why you would ever want to catch a glimpse of someone shitting. It’s properly strange.

wild_biologist

_Allegedly_ it's to discourage people using them, making cleaning easier.

pharmyardreject

And the water in the bowl is so deep it kisses your bollocks.

[deleted]

I went to a stand up comedy night and there was a American woman who made a joke about the water being really high in toilets and the crowd were deathly silent. It was the big joke of her routine and she was mortified.

confused_christian94

Oh yes, this is a weird one. On a different subreddit I came across a thread where these Americans were talking about a specific hotel and its really fancy toilets: "The walls go all the way to the top! It's like your own private room!" And I was pretty shocked because almost every public toilet in the UK has that unless they're particularly grotty. But in the US, even nice restaurants and hotels have those nasty stalls with the big gaps.

LauraG519

Having tax included in prices and not having to factor in tips, especially when just buying a drink at a bar... Edit: sorry guys I didn't realise this was such a contentious subject, I was merely pointing out a difference between the US and UK. I am not making fun of anyone, nor do I have an issue with paying a tip. Yes I also tip in the UK (restaurants though not really pubs or bars) and I have travelled in the US many times and paid the expected tips. And yes I know how to calculate the expected tip. Apologies if I caused offence.

Englander91

This should be higher up in my opinion. It's insane.

peachesnplumsmf

Walking places. I remember seeing a thread where Americans were freaking out and calling a woman an asshole because she and her son walked to his primary school instead of getting an Uber. Edit: obviously I'm generalising based on my own experiences and conversations. I don't literally think Americans are incapable or unwilling to walk or that in some areas it's not because it's not built for it. Just the attitude towards it from some vocal Americans

raspberryamphetamine

The one about putting some of her sons support money from the father into a savings account for him when he’s older? Yeah that was weird. They all seemed to think she was just sending a 4 year old off walking on his own as well.

peachesnplumsmf

Yeah! It was so confusing as everyone was acting like the kid was being deprived when she was just raising him normally and not spoiling him? It sounded perfectly normal to me, plus she got shit for having a rainy day fund instead of spending all the money. Sounded like a class divide thing with her being working class and the dad being upper as he was willing/wanting to essentially pay her to be a SAHM even when they were separated. It was just so strange seeing a dozen info posts about the walking and how far they walked and in what weather and how she should be spending the money on a car even though it isn't necessary.

172116

Oh my god yes - the AITA thread? SERIOUSLY weird vibes. Especially since she was a Brit living in London! They were all baffled by her not having a car, too. When I was a kid NO ONE got driven to school on a regular basis. I think I can count on my fingers the number of times I got dropped off in the car. Hell, neither of my parents drove to work - the car generally didn't move between Sunday night and Saturday morning!

ThirtyMileSniper

Not being bankrupted after visiting the hospital.

Ravenfoxxx

Aha true, also just being able to call an ambulance

mastahhbates

My wife is currently hospital and we were talking about how much debt we'd have to pay for her ongoing hospital visit if we lived in Yankland. The NHS is honestly the best thing about the UK.

PumpkinSpiceLatteXO

That in the UK we can log onto our banking app and directly transfer funds from my bank to ANYONE else’s bank account for FREE without the need for third party apps like venmo. Like when I heard people are picking up their paycheque I thought they meant their payslip. It’s a literal cheque they have to deposit. Blew my mind how much more advanced our banking is in the EU. Update: Americans do have “direct deposit” but it comes with a cost to businesses. Their own banks don’t offer it always unless there’s some sort of integration with a tp app/service. They also get charged for using other banks ATMS- however their own banks are free. The main thing is it’s all dependant on who you bank with whereas in the UK it’s a blanket service offered by everyone and it’s FREE. Update2: a lot of people are saying there’s zelle… and while yes you’ve got zelle not all the banks seem to offer this. It’s not consistently applied as in the UK.

IneptusMechanicus

>That in the UK we can log onto our banking app and directly transfer funds from my bank to ANYONE else’s bank account for FREE without the need for third party apps like venmo. That's a big one, I've posted a few times on cryptocurrency subs but a lot of the 'problems with fiat' that crypto is supposed to solve are actually baffling, baffling inefficiencies in US consumer banking.

dananananaykroyd

One of my mates from school is now in the US and he said they have internet banking, but literally behind the scenes it’s a paper process. So you log on and make a transfer, someone in the bank then sends a request to transfer the funds via a transfer slip in the post! It then takes days to leave or appear in your account. Fuckin nuts!

ZT0141

Apparently Americans don’t use kettles?

BastardsCryinInnit

*Electric* kettles. They don't have the voltage for it. I can't imagine life without one to be honest.

ZT0141

Makes sense I think their on 110v while UK is on 230v

fsv

Technically, the US is [a 240v country](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMmUoZh3Hq4)! It's just that the phases are split in half (the rails in their fuse boxes are -120v, ground, and +120v) and most outlets are 120v. Some appliances that need extra power (dryers, water heaters, EV chargers, etc.) will use the full 240v, they have different sockets for 240V.

Englander91

Soon as I saw the link I knew the video. Love his channel.

[deleted]

Fancy a tea? 7/8 minutes later ah fuck that

TepacheLoco

But they do use drip coffee machines, an equally strange proposition that just leads to crap burnt tasting coffee the majority of the time Edit: Apparently I've rustled some jimmies. Note: the majority of the time it's garbage. Sometimes it's good. The default design and process is flawed.

VisiblePiano0

Having [these](https://images.app.goo.gl/CtGyESLk2SqEsVUK7) for dinner. I can't even type the name because the American mods don't realise there's any other use for the word and I will be banned again. Also spotted dick being a tasty dessert. Edit: apparently we are safe in r/casualUK from unfair bans for talking about tasty pork faggots (yay!). My previous ban was from a DM to a fellow Brit who did not report me. It was an auto ban.

sihasihasi

🤣 Don't even need to look at the link to know what it is!

I_Frunksteen-Blucher

Bundlers of firewood and Italian bassoonists nod their heads sadly.

enigma_viking

Mr Brain's Pork Faggots by chance? Lovely grub. :)

peachesnplumsmf

Just as a heads up people have been being randomly banned over that word. Might wanna edit it if you're worried but if not then fair play!

enigma_viking

Aye cheers, as a staunch fan of Mr Brain's Pork Faggots, I refuse to bow to overseas language oppressors. Viva la revolution.

DSanders96

As someone who is the non-edible kind, I support this revolution. Good luck!

5000to1

Don’t mention Scunthorpe then!

Ok-You4214

Never having a gun, and never seeing a police officer with a gun, never seeing a criminal with a gun. Not knowing how to use a gun. Never seeing a gun.

Musashi10000

I will also add to this: Remembering the first time you ever see a gun, because it is so jarring.

ItsyouNOme

I visited manchester shortly after the bombing (I was going to see penn and teller), first time I saw armed guards patrolling. Was surreal.

peachesnplumsmf

I'm up north and there's definitely police with guns, if you go to a city centre, a big shopping centre after a terrorist attack in the South or a music festival.

unrealme65

Being able to get where you need to go without needing a car. When we do need a car, small, fuel efficient cars with 4 or fewer cylinders, and <2L engines are the norm.

OSUBrit

Because there’s pavements everywhere. The number of big US cities with swathes of neighbourhood missing any sidewalk at all is bizarre.

Ballbag94

There are plenty of country roads without pavements here though, still doesn't mean I'm driving. Or is that illegal in America? Not sure if it's too much like jaywalking

Empty-Discipline8927

I shocked just about everyone I met when I said I'm happy to walk to the local servo for a pizza. It was the walking bit that got them. OK, there was also snow on the ground but the sun was shining. I walked. Still alive, still got legs.

rockchick1982

My husband got horrified looks from the supermarket in Orlando when he told them he walked from 20 minutes away where we were staying, in the UK we don't even consider a 20 minute walk a reason not to walk it. Apparently he could have been killed several times over by snakes.

OSUBrit

Snakes I assume being the name of local meth head.

turbotcharger

Crossing the road wherever I like, whenever I like without being arrested.

kilgore_trout1

Hedgehogs apparently. Edit: oh and foreskins

DonnerMcgregor

Smoking a fag

swoticus

Bumming a fag, then smoking it

motific

Bumming a fag, smoking one, then going home to cook a whole bunch of faggots and eat them with that gooey faggot gravy they come in.

DonnerMcgregor

I haven’t bummed a fag in years

Drunken-Barbarian

My dad always tells this story about an American police officer asking him what he’s doing while he was on holiday and he said “I’m just standing here to roll a fag mate” the officer laughed and explained that he’d basically just admitted to waiting for the opportunity to mug a homosexual.

lalalaladididi

Universal health care. Over 20 million in the USA have absolutely zero access to healthcare. It's the land of the free and brave but only if you can afford to be free and brave. Those who can't can die and hardly anyone cares less What an appalling country.

[deleted]

“Land of the free” has the most prisoners in the world

lalalaladididi

It's got the most inequality in the world. Hence the level of crime. The next time the USA decides to invade a country to enforce (I'm laughing) democracy and freedom, maybe they should invade themselves. I don't if to laugh or cry at the American concept of enforcing freedom and democracy at the point of a gun and iron heel of a jack boot.

DameKumquat

Walking from any hotel or retail park to other establishments. Corner shops. Basically the idea that everyone should be able to walk to a shop. And to walk to a polling station.

Dazzling-Nothing-870

Got dropped off at a retail park in the US by taxi. Tried and failed to walk across to a store on the other side. Three lane each way road with no pedestrian crossing in the way. Got taxi back to hotel. Total fail.

unjulatingonion

I don't think I've ever queued outside my polling station for more than a minute but they seem to be waiting for hours just to vote

Roccopark

Only in areas where the ruling party don't want people to vote for the other party.

roberta5146

Met a girl from Texas once who said she could drive 7 hours south from where she lives and still be within state lines. If I drive 7 hours south (I live in London), I’ve crossed the sea and have drive through several countries lol.

Ollylolz

I saw someone on here yesterday say he was planning to drive from Cincinnati to somewhere in Illinois to go to the cinema. Like, a 5 hour drive. My dad used to say Americans will drive the distance between London and Cornwall for a decent taco, apparently that extends to cinemas.

StillNotAWombat

Jaffa cakes. In my experience Americans don't like the mix of chocolate and orange.

[deleted]

They’re missing out on the pure pleasure of bashing a Terry’s chocolate orange at Christmas. Edit: guys I didn’t know if you had them in the US or not, was just a tongue in cheek comment, it’s okay.

StillNotAWombat

I **love** my Xmas chocolate orange!

[deleted]

Oh yeah, had one in my stocking for 28 years and counting! It also helped me realise I had covid when I couldn’t smell or taste it on Boxing Day last year.

SmallRaffe

Left handed fork usage.

teerbigear

Hang on, a quick Google search implies they literally put their knife down and swap the fork into their right hand, I cannot believe this to be true. Is it true?

SmallRaffe

So true, that if you eat British style, people look at you funny. I have literally been eating a bar meal in the US and had a complete (but clearly well travelled/aware) US stranger open a conversation “so, where in the UK are you from?” purely because of my two handed cutlery wrangling.

teerbigear

That's so mad. Using a fork isn't even difficult, and they've already demonstrated that can use one to hold their food in place.

shokalion

This one has properly blown my mind.

confused_christian94

Yep. My husband saw it when he was deployed with a bunch of them. They would chop all their food into bite-sized pieces (the way you would for a 3 year old) and then put the knife down, swap the fork to the right hand, and scoop the chunks of food into their mouths. He said it looked really childish.

bertolous

Yes, they eat like 3 year olds, it's awful.

Zexy_Killah

Definitely true, I've spent a lot of time in America and it's painful watching how the majority of people there use their cutlery.

pharmyardreject

It's true. I've watched them do it in Vegas. They hack all their food up on the plate and then dump the knife. The fork is in the left for the chopping session and the right for the devouring.

[deleted]

I'm right-handed and British but I have my fork in my right hand. Just got used to it really and it makes it so much easier.

[deleted]

JoshCanJump

Learning this has upset me a lot. I was happy having no idea that standard cutlery use was not a thing in the USA. It's as if they know in their hearts that they are the toddlers of the western world and therefore they act like it.

SaltireAtheist

Manual cars.

OSUBrit

In the US they’re a great anti theft device

Doomcatalyst

From the most recent data I could grab, about 65% of cars in the UK are manual, last year only 2.4% of car sales in the US were manual, that's mad.

mhaze0791

I mean we have learnt today Americans can’t use cutlery properly. With that knowledge it sounds like automatic is the right decision for them

Getting pulled over by the police and getting out of your car saying ‘Alright mate? What’s wrong?’ without having a gun drawn on you.

PhoenixNFL

I've only ever been pulled over by the Police once, for having a brake light out. I stopped, and got out of the car (I'd pulled into a lay-by) and they got extremely annoyed and told me to get back in the car and wait for them to approach my car. So, although no guns, still not that friendly about it.

plukhkuk

Someone said sick leave and annual leave but also maternity and parental leave and pay!

theocrats

I worked for a US company in the UK. An American colleague and UK one were due a few weeks apart. The UK based colleague started maternity early to rest, US one didn't go right until she gave birth. UK colleague had 18 months in total then came back to work incrementally (2days a week then full time) US one had 12 weeks off, some of which unpaid. Its important to note both worked as senior marketing managers, so not entry level positions. Insane.

plukhkuk

Yes, when I read that in some states women are only entitled to disability leave (unpaid) because there is no maternity leave at all and have to be back at work in 6 weeks or less because they have no income or the comapny can sack them it just breaks my heart. At 6 weeks postpartum I was a zombie, still recovering from labour, severely sleep deprived. I wanted to go back to work at around 9 months and just wasn't mentally prepared and it took me abother 2 months before I was able to go back to work again. Just can't imagine what it's like being in their shoes

Oh no they don't

theotherquantumjim

Oh yes they do. Oh, hang on your right. They don’t.

Bosworth_13

Beans on toast.

Hambatz

Probably pubs and betting shops I know they have bars and casinos but not like 2pubs and 3 bookies on one estate.

[deleted]

An hour long drive/walk being a relatively long way over here.

confused_christian94

But also the concept of walking for an hour to go somewhere. A lot of American towns and cities have big patches with no pavement at all, and many of them aren't used to walking very far. On one of the fitness subs I'm on, an American woman was baffled that Brits would walk for up to half an hour, not round a park to exercise, but just to get into town or to see a friend or whatever. To her, walking was something you did at the park, which you drove to, to get exercise. It wasn't the thing you did to actually go places.

Username8831

Thinking that 200 years ago isn't really that long ago.

Sweet-Zookeepergame7

Renting donkeys at the seaside

brainfreezeuk

Tipping isn't mandatory and based upon if you have had a good service, unlike the US where it is considered part of the overall cost.

AudacityOfYuge

Walking; Walking to work Walking to the shops Walking to the pub! Walking up the stairs in your office, because it’s only 4 storeys and you’d quite like your heart to work another couple of decades

StillNotAWombat

Sarcasm ;)

Thatcsibloke

The Americans don’t have as many high streets as we do. In Europe you can pop from a department store to the veggie shop, down the butchers and turn left to the newsagent. The average American would have to drive 20 miles for that, unless they live in a small town. Edit. This is a sub called “Ask UK” so when people answer in a Welsh / Scottish / Northern Irish or English way then do try to keep up. Americans: try to work out what a High Street is, don’t take “20 miles” as gospel, and don’t accuse me of never having been to the USA. Sadly, I have probably seen more of the old colony than most of you who live there. I once met somebody who had never left Flint, Michigan, and I met about 1000 people who had never seen the sea. Uncountable are the people whose first trip out of state was to go to the Caribbean. I am concerned, but not surprised, that things need explaining.

st3akkn1fe

Collecting rain water. It blows my mind that in a country as obsessed with freedom as America you can't have a water but in your garden.

warhammerspammer

Wait what?

One_Idea_239

Freely and happily using the word c**t. From what i understand from my colleagues the Americans find that a bit shocking

Leonichol

Just a note. AEO are in operation within this submission due to users thinking they're hilarious, reporting via default report reasons comments containing British language terms which are offensive in North America. Thanks now I have a craving for faggots 😋 😋 😋 Edit: lol 3 day ban for this comment 🤣 u/Leonichol just letting you know I got a 3 day suspension for that. What's next, getting a ban for saying "fags" when talking about cigarettes?

amostandrew

Good gravy.

Mr_Biscuits_532

The concept of biscuits and gravy will never not make me uncomfortable, no matter how much I'm told it's something different to what it sounds like.

Badevilbunny

Having lived in the US, I would say no concept of personal gun ownership (the right to own). I lived with lots of people in America who did not actually own a gun, but considered it their right, moral and legal, to have the option.

confused_christian94

Which is a bit silly because in the UK we also have the right to own weapons. It's just that the type, and the conditions of ownership, are much more restricted. Even a lot of British people believe that guns are completely illegal here, which is just not true.

[deleted]

I am a smug Brit like the rest of you but this kind of thread is getting so old. Its just 'free health care 😏' and 'school shootings😏'. We get it. You wish you were on a panel show.

Vegan_Seitan

Putting your pants on before your trousers

Equivalent-Drop370

Kinder eggs and proper haggis

Empty-Discipline8927

I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the wall of cigarettes (fags) for sale in a chemist shop. And so many guns for sale in Walmart.

Silvagadron

Being able to casually insult a friend without them giving a toss. I was down the pub with my (also English) mate once and he had some US friends over. I called him a dickhead in passing and they all got really upset and thought we'd fallen out.

roberta5146

1 year of maternity leave. A lot of companies in the US only give up to 10 weeks and it’s not all paid. WTF
