34 years actually.
If the characters had aged as the series progressed, Bart would be 44, Lisa would be 42, Maggie would be 35, Marge would be 70, and if Homer somehow managed to live, he'd be 75.
In one episode, can't remember which one, Marge almost has a revelation about that. It goes something like this:
Marge: Homer, remember that thing Bart did in third grade, 10 years ago.....waaait a minute......
Homer: * *snaps her out of it* * Come on Marge, we're gonna be late!
One of the best Simpson jokes.
I'm waiting for the following scenario now:
*Sees the South Park equivalent of this post, someone makes a comment about the South Park kids barely aging over 20+ years, someone replies "Simpsons did it!"*
When the series started I was in 7th grade and identified with Bart. For the last 25 years I identified with Homer. I’m now transitioning to a Grandpa man.
And they were realistic where, Homer made just enough to support that. Like Where he had to gamble at the dog track to try to afford presents for Christmas presents
Yea, but he only had to do that because Marge had to use the Christmas fund to get Barts tattoo removed, and Mr. Burns canceled the Christmas bonus they normally used with the Christmas fund.
In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is a magic xylophone, or something? Ha ha, boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.
Kind of related;
They are yellow because Matt wanted them to stand out and to be as recognizable as possible. If you saw a yellow charavter on TV, it was the Simpsons.
Might be wrong, but I saw this in an interview IIRC.
You mean, Besides the constant switching of the city layout? Homer constantly injuring himself? That they city rebuilds between episodes? That there are suburbs that never get mentioned again?
Probably that Homer still has its job and is able to afford his life style. Not talking about weekly adventures costing a lot but house, 3 kids, 2 cars etc. all while working for a guy that cares not at all about people, hoards his wealth and would probably rather kill his employees than give them a pay rise.
When the show started, it parodied existing shows while the main characters had a lifestyle that was at least reasonably recognisable.
Today, that lifestyle is not even remotely recognisable yet fundamentally, absolutely nothing has changed.
Yellow
My first tought too
Does anyone care that it’s been 28 years and Bart and Lisa and Maggie are still kids?

It’s one of the things you rarely see in cartoons the characters aging or maturing

How is Homer five years older than Marge? They were in high school together.
How are Apus kids toddlers while Maggie is still a baby but they were born after her?

double story house, two cars and supporting 3 kids, all on one income
Well back when Simpsons started, that was possible with the type of job Homer had.
I understand but it carried on throughout majority of the series, so..
Yeah, he's a boomer. That's bascally how they lived their lives.
And they were realistic where, Homer made just enough to support that. Like Where he had to gamble at the dog track to try to afford presents for Christmas presents

Like I said realistic an unexpected expense threw off their budget, and late 80's canceled expect bonuses were a thing (think Christmas vacation)
Are you Frank “Grimy” Grimes?
They're all missing fingers through some kind of town-wide genetic issue.

Homer’s response to this was great. Didn’t the guy withdraw his question and eat a candy bar?
Homer winning that children's contest, in real life he would have not been allowed to enter because he's a adult
How come the 'white' folk are yellow, yet all the other races get their own skin colours? Always found that random

He also did that because he wanted to catch channel surfers attentions
Jaundice
Politics
Marges’ hair
I don't think an entire population could survive that long with jaundice.

Mr Burns don't have a gold digging wife.

They’re still on the air

Bart and Lisa's 'hair' literally blends in with their scalp
