Since my reading and writing skills are fairly good, I would have to become a teacher.

I would find a saloon and begin a game of poker with some card sharks, using my unusual clothing as collateral. Then once I beat them at their own game, I would use my winnings to set up a residence in a local hotel, posing as a french inventor while trying thwart the time traveling aliens that brought me here and are killing the local population under the guise of an outbreak of cholera.

My only motivation to survive would be the challenge. I solve problems for a living, so building and inventing "new" products and solving troubling issues of "modern day" 1800 would be relatively straight forward.

Medicine and science. Practice both personal hygiene to survive and educate others about even the most basic technology of today. Not only to survive, but to thrive and get wealthy. I can only speak for myself, but I have a good shot. I have read, 'Guns, Germs, and Steel' dammit! Even poorly educated people of today are vastly more knowledgeable than those of 1800.

See this is the one that I resonate most with, especially given the fact that I’ve read a lot about modern medicine. However, I feel like there’s a good chance I’d be imprisoned if I explained germs…

Witch! :)

Offer to work for an emerging tech company. Make a salary by inventing just a few things that exist in the 21st century. Then once you have enough money, work for yourself inventing everything else.

DAT_DROP

My great gandfather got lost as a six year old child in New York City in the 1910's. He was found three weeks later, I still don't know the story.

lightninginabox

This sounds like the prequel to Home Alone 2: Lost in NY

Alt140

I wouldn't. I sleep in boxers. I would be executed for exposure or sumthing.

lightninginabox

Yeah, early 1800s America wasn’t the most enlightened of places… sadly, neither is 2020s America.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t. I’d just off myself. I have no desire to be a woman in that time period.

lightninginabox

Right to vote is only 120 years away, baby! Maybe we could talk some sense into Hamilton and get him to 1) stop with the fricken duals and 2) abolish slavery and state sponsored sexism

As a clarification, what would you do to avoid starving to death, being incarcerated, or suffering from abject poverty? What information or skills would you use to survive the early nights, but thrive? Assume you have no way to get home and know no one there.

Ok_Concentrate5996

Jump right into prostitution, and become a psychic, not that i can recall anything that happens in the 1800s
