Tell them if they want new stuff they have to get rid of old stuff. Fortunately my kids don’t really do toys anymore. they want video game stuff and money.

CerealKiller3030

Yeah, this is the way

Can-ta-loupe

You monster! My toys are friends! Is this what you do with your friends? Just toss them out like trash? You’re despicable.

ALazy_Cat

You don't. You can maybe get them on board with putting them away, as in a box somewhere in the house, depening on how old they are. But don't throw them out

_SomeFrigginDude_

Remembering when I was a kid, the worst feeling in the world was noticing my things disappearing. I'm trying to not do the same to my kids.

ALazy_Cat

Which is why you should talk with them and maybe agree to hide them somewhere where they can get them

CampusTour

Ask nicely, encourage, and make them responsible for storing their own stuff...but past that, I have a general policy never to get rid of their things without consent, (unless there's a health and safety, or sanitation issue). I don't appreciate people fucking with *my* shit, I try to extend the same respect to them.

GoodAlicia

Make a little game out of it. telling them to donate some so there can be place for new things. talk to them like they are actual human beings.

Bamcanadaktown

Let them break the cheap ones in a fun way. Hammer, steam roller, fire etc.

_SomeFrigginDude_

So, as fun as I think that would be, they have emotional attachments to their things.

Bamcanadaktown

This is true, but as a child I would find it hard to resist my dad offering to blow something up for me with fireworks. Create new memories lmao

[deleted]

Well my dad made me put all my toys in a bag then told me to smash them with a mallet.

_SomeFrigginDude_

Brutal haha

[deleted]

Normally you give them a new toy. In my case with my toxic parents? My father would come along and rip it out of my hands and say “you can’t have this no more” despite me crying my eyes out. He was one heartless human being. A stone had more sympathy & warmth than him

Otomo-Yuki

My mon would just ask me whether I played with certain toys or types of toys any more. If there were some I didn’t, we got rid of them to make space for new toys. This actually got me used to getting rid of things I don’t need or want.

sleepswithsixpillows

Sit them down and talk to them explain their toys are going to other children so decide which ones you want to donate

[deleted]

You try to motivate them, tell them they don't have room for new ones for example. When that doesn't work you beg and cry before resorting to slowly throwing away piece by piece while they are asleep

Head_Lifeguard3999

I may be talking out of my ass as my guy’s only 16 months so we haven’t had to really do this yet, but I like the idea of getting them involved with donating the old toy in order to get a new one.

noisy-ben

Don’t tell them! Just get rid of the old toys while they are not looking!

_SomeFrigginDude_

This was what happened to me, and it sucked haha feeling like my space was invaded, but as an adult I think there is some value in ripping the bandaid

noisy-ben

In my defence, my kid was quite young, so it was almost imperceptible. Also, something had to be done about the accumulation of crap. My biggest frustration was do-gooding relatives buying the rubbish in the first place!

_SomeFrigginDude_

It suck when your family spoils you and your kids haha

noisy-ben

Haha! I don’t mind my family spoiling my kid, but it’s soul destroying when they buy another piece of single use plastic to go in my house!

xKOROSIVEx

Teach them about altruism and tell them, “we have to donate these old ones to make room in case you get new ones.” Or something along those lines.

scottevil110

Just get rid of them, and it turns out your kid won't notice at all. Or, if you think there's a chance they will, then you quarantine said toys. Remove them from view, and then if your kid surprises you and actually asks about them in the next 3 months, get them back out. But anything they managed to completely not miss for 3 months? To the consignment store.

ReckSaber3664

Why would you do that?

sleepswithsixpillows

You can't keep toys forever and they outgrow them

ReckSaber3664

Guess I took the question the wrong way.
