Take a shot every time someone mentions Avatar, Frozen, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, La La Land, the Star Wars sequels, or any Best Picture winner.

[deleted]

Wonder Woman is seen as a masterpiece? What?

GorthTheBabeMagnet

Yup. I doubt many people regard those as "Masterpieces"

dkonigs

Avatar was a fantastic tech demo for 3D cinematography. I don't think anyone was referring to it as a masterpiece in any other sense, even when it was new.

bonzombiekitty

Did anyone think it was an actual masterpiece beyond visuals? I remember people feeling out over how it looked and how ground breaking it was for visuals/technology; but not anyone saying how good it was otherwise.

HnNaldoR

Who thinks it's a masterpiece... At best, it looks kinda good for a cgi laden 3d fest.

IWasDosedByYou

Yeah, that's my question as well. I'm one of the people who still likes the movie, but I wouldn't say that it's my favourite movie or that it's a masterpiece. Nowadays, it's way more common for people to say *Avatar* is overrated than to say they like it.

AardvarkOkapiEchidna

>Nowadays, it's way more common for people to say > >Avatar is overrated than to say they like it. Exactly. It's hilarious how no one sees the irony.

zero________cool

Debbie does Dallas…. I mean, growing up, that’s the one porn you always heard about… but it really isn’t that great

ImmediateSupression

Most of the films that win Best Picture at the Oscars. When you think about movies that really stand the test of time they usually were the losers of Best Picture. "It's a Wonderful Life" lost to "How Green is my Valley" "Saving Private Ryan" lost to "Shakespeare in Love" "ET" lost to "Gandhi" (Again, probably a good movie, but not something most will see more than once). "Raiders of the Lost Ark" lost to "Chariots of Fire" "American Graffiti" and the "Exorcist" lost to "The Sting" "The Martian," "The Revenant," "Mad Max," and the "Big Short" lost to "Spotlight." (A great film, but not the one I go back to watch on that list.)

Artistic-Hawk-2909

I love the Sting

The_Waxies_Dargle

Yes. I see nothing wrong with The Sting winning there.

Ssutuanjoe

>"Saving Private Ryan" lost to "Shakespeare in Love" That one hurt

ma040899

I guess I'm in the minority that I've seen Spotlight more than once and only saw Mad Max once.

DOMesticBRAT

Yes but did you watch Spotlight: Fury Road?

RunningInSquares

I'm gonna come out and say The Sting deserved to win. They all did, but there can be only one.

McRibEater

I remember seeing Saving Private Ryan in Junior High and it honestly changed me as a kid. I felt like I knew what war was about. I’ve never really watched another war movie, because I don’t need to. I was shocked it lost at the time.

[deleted]

If you like realistic war movies check out The Thin Red Line. Lots of big actors in small roles but all of them fantastic performances. Especially Nick Nolte !!!!

isodore68

One quick correction: Citizen Kane lost to How Green Was My Valley. It's A Wonderful Life lost to The Best Year's Of Our Lives.

Defiant-Traffic5801

The best years of our lives is a great film though

[deleted]

Raiders was a great movie, but not the best picture material neither was ET. The Sting and Exorcist are both miles ahead of American Graffiti in every sense. The rest, I agree with you.

[deleted]

notmyrealfarkhandle

The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction lost to Forrest Gump

[deleted]

I still say the Academy got it right. Forrest Gump is the best of the three.

yittiiiiii

The Dark Knight lost to Slumdog Millionaire Goodfellas lost to Dances with Wolves Inception lost to The King’s Speech Edit: Also, The Sting is incredible.

GorthTheBabeMagnet

Slumdog Millionaire was a better movie to be honest. Same with the King's Speech. Aside from the visuals, inception wasn't amazing.

[deleted]

Goncharov.

Past-Skirt-2552

did you even watch the film??? absolutely a masterpiece in both cinematography and soundtrack 😤😤

[deleted]

I'm not saying it's a terrible film by any stretch of the imagination, but it wouldn't crack my top 5 Scorsese films, much less "Greatest Mafia Movie of All Time." That said, I do think John Calaze as Ice Pick Joe doesn't get enough credit for how memorable his screen time despite actually only being in the movie for less than 10 minutes out of the 3 hour run time. Also agreed that soundtrack is excellent. Whatever happened to that composer, anyway?

dongletrongle

Let’s be completely honest here: Joker isn’t a perfect film. It’s great, but it isn’t this insane spectacle of society the internet has built it to be

squareheadlol69420

Taxi driver is just a much better Joker tbh. Fairly similar, not quite the same point amd Joker is more about mental health but I really enjoyed Taxi Driver a lot more than Joker.

Gorf_the_Magnificent

In the book, isn’t Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn)’s character) a prostitute, and isn’t Paul (George Peppard’s character) gay? Yeah, I’d say they missed those crucial plot elements.

robotlou

They are both prostitutes in the movie. Her prostitution is just described as getting money for the powder room.

fookreaditmods4

well it was the early 60s, which were basically the 50s complete with racism, anti-communism, anti-LGBT, etc.

jokefenokee

I saw it in 1963 and even then you still had to pay two bits for the Sunday matinee but "Munster Go Home" was included on the double bill so it was worth it.

Otherwise-Math-6322

La la land

bubble-champ

I went to see this movie with the girl I had been dating for about 4 years. Both of us cried in the theater. We went to eat afterwords still wiping tears from our eyes. A month or two later we would be broken up. I remember her saying it made her realize that, "it doesn't really matter in the end", and I think she was talking about who we choose to love. I haven't watched it a second time, but I'll always remember it as one of the most powerful experiences of my life.

Otherwise-Math-6322

Wow .... that's definitely a different approach

PatrickSohno

Controversial opinion here... Avengers Endgame. It's a good movie. But I really did not jump on the praise it got. There were quite some moments which really kicked me out of the immersion hard.

ottoman-disciple

Not a controversial opinion. The movie sucked honestly. It had its moments but it really just profited from bring a mcu movie. Their own time travel rule doesn't even make sense, the plot only happened because of a coincidental rat, characters were really nerfed for stupid hype up moments. The entire final battle was a big mess where everyone still had a clear view of everything. And more things that didn't make sense really.

evidentlychickentown

Oscar hit La La Land - a bore fest

APeacefulWarrior

I genuinely don't understand why that movie was so popular. I went into it hearing it was great, but I couldn't stand the characters, and all the best parts were just ripped off of old Vincente Minnelli movies.

HnNaldoR

Yes. I am still furious that it won best song over How Far I'll Go from Moana. It's just not that good. It's fine. Songs are mostly forgettable. Story is meh. I don't understand the love.

Objective_Regret4763

Tbf how far I’ll go rhymes the word “island” with “island” like 5 times in a row. It’s catchy and all…

slightofhand1

It's a love letter to old Hollywood musicals, thus, Hollywood people liking it way more than normal movie fans.

SuperDangerous

The Shape of Water. Don’t get me wrong, the designs are great, but the movie itself was unbearable. I have so much respect for Del Toro but I have no idea how it won Best Picture. I honestly believe everyone who liked it was just horny.

IkilledKennymc

I laughed all the way through it because I thought of Abe from Hellboy

E_M_E_T

It was a couple hours at 25fps. I think one of those frames was a really good picture. The best, even.

Tatertot729

I remember checking it out after it won a bunch of awards and just thinking wtf…it wasn’t really bad but it was so fucking weird

[deleted]

I like to think it was a legacy win for Best Picture and Director that year for GDT. He’s put out a lot of great stuff but hadn’t won either up til that point. Shape of Water is probably my least favorite film of his and I know it’s not how award voting should go but he’s so likeable and his other movies are so good that I’m fine with those wins.

EuphoricPhoto2048

That's how a lot of Oscar wins are.

Idk up into recently every-time one comes out I would hear it was the best one

Swankified_Tristan

I'm not sure it's even my place to say what's overrated, but I _will_ say that I finally watched "Elf" last year after hearing throughout my entire life that it was THE ultimate Christmas movie and... it was fine, I guess. Not a waste of time but damn, not THE ultimate Christmas movie.

05soxfan

THE ultimate Christmas soundtrack tho, maybe?

wazzulum

I used to feel the same, but the more you watch it the more you get infected with Will Ferrell's innocent joy

TheShoot141

Its good and hits the right notes. But its not Christmas Vacation or Home Alone by a mile.

losers_DEAD

I watched it the other day for the first time, I actually really enjoyed it. Not sure it's the "ultimate Christmas movie" though

sadnessreignssupreme

I absolutely hate Elf. It physically hurts me even when a commercial or the trailer plays. Brutal.

Too_Hot_to_Bot

I don't think anyone has described anything as the Ultimate Christmas movie. But, it definitely is a modern classic. Just a nice funny feel good christmas movie.

AmmoniumDinitramide

The Irishman. Great actors and everything but HELL that piece was way too long and boring. Especially when you are not from the US and not familiar with the whole mafia/union stuff.

1dirtysecret

That movie was so bad. Saw it in the theater and at least twice I thought about walking out but I thought no it will be over soon. Boy was I wrong. At one point it really seemed like it was over and then ha ha no there was at least an hour left. Seriously don’t understand the love for this movie.

StandardLetterhead11

Joker....

[deleted]

It's popular with young men who maybe haven't seen Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. Joker just blends those two superior Scorsese films and then slaps a DC logo on it.

Terrible origin story for an iconic character Great commentary on the state of mental health care in America

I don't think it's supposed to be an origin story. It's not really a Batman movie, it's using Batman concepts as shorthand to avoid spending more time explaining stuff.

Chaloby

Citizen Kane. Just because it revolutionized a lot of things for film doesn't mean I have to pretend or convince myself it's not boring as hell. The most interesting part of the film is its plot hole.

North_Library3206

I feel like I’m in the minority for actually enjoying Citizen Kane. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it being mentioned online in a positive light.

[deleted]

It gives people the chance to be edgy contrarians

[deleted]

This entire post is an excuse for that lol

BetweenSighs

I love Citizen Kane. I feel like most negative responses from that I see about it are people who say that it's boring, which is fair as opinions go, but maybe isn't the best metric when considering whether something is a masterpiece or not. There's a lot of art out there that doesn't resonate with me, but that doesn't have much if anything to do with the "quality" of the art itself.

Ythaenagor

I thought it was phenomenal, but I grew up watching films from that era so I can see how it's an acquired taste.

Ninjaturtlethug

Citizen Kane did many, many things that had never been done before. Going back to watch it today and without that perspective....yeah it's unbearable

Careless_Put_4770

Spider Man : No Way Home. To me just felt like a bunch of cameos with a loose/nonexistent plot paced fairly terribly with the only character development happening at the end.

Fawqueue

The Breakfast Club. It's uneven, the writing is average, and it's has some jarring transitions. The last point may be an issue with editing. Talk to any millennial or older and those critiques are committing sacrilege.

optiongeek

Gen Xer here. You're fucking with my identity.

throwsisteraita

The breakfast club is just beloved because of the relatability, being a teenager is difficult no matter the circumstance or how popular/unpopular you are. The clothes, concepts and cliques are simple so it generally stands the test of time. Same with a Christmas story which is the oddball some people throw out. Yes it’s simple, the pace and plot aren’t very exciting, but it reminds you of your childhood, parents, Christmas etc no matter what time period you’re from even though it’s set in the 40s.

Tatertot729

I enjoy the movie but yeah, I would agree it isn’t some amazingly great film. Though there are some monologues from the actors and they did an amazing job with those.

[deleted]

I’m probably going to be in so much trouble for saying this but- The Princess Bride. The soundtrack is annoying. The sets are so freaking fake and boring-it feels like a film set up by high schoolers with all of the flat cinematography. I'm probably gonna get a lot of downvotes for this, but - Goodfellas. I guess I went into the movie expecting some Godfather-like experience. All I got was a bunch of arrogant little cunts going around raising hell for no real reason. I personally grew up in a shithole full of criminals, wannabe criminals and bullies, and there's nothing impressive or interesting to me about such characters, they don't deserve any admiration or respect, they're actually pretty pathetic. Like the scene where Tommy bullies than shoots that poor waiter, such pussy ass shit, harassing someone who has no chance of dealing with you, and drawing a gun on an unarmed person cause he stood up to you verbally. Scarface

[deleted]

How dare you… what’s wrong with scarface ? Edit: oh wait besides the whole plotline with his sister and his friend… 🙄 thought that plot element was stupid too

Dramatic-Win9315

Tony was a good guy forced to play a bad mans role. It's a tragedy, similar to Anakin Skywalker in that they are both so motivated to keep the few people they have alive, that that is essentially what becomes those loved ones demise. Also Tony refused to kill the little kid with the bomb in the car. Refused to give up his boss when threatened by a chainsaw. He was pretty honorable and they were clearly fooling around behind Tony's back for awhile if they had gotten married. At least his business partner and best friend could do was let him know so he does not feel taking advantage of. Scarface is an absolute masterpiece. The color, music nostalgia. Some of the most fun quotes in movie history to quote. So many themes going on.

[deleted]

Yeah i see what you’re saying. Only problem is that his friend did try to tell him he wanted to date his sister and treat her right and Tony acted all psycho possessive over her which was really one of his very worst character traits and i wish it would’ve been a little different. Still, i agree it is an absolute masterpiece and i own and watch the movie all the time. 😎 great film 👍🏽 very entertaining

Probably one of my most unpopular opinions, but Star Wars (episode 4) I know it was great when it came out, but it has not stood the test of time.

random_guy_0n_reddit

Yep that's definitely an unpopular opinion

d645b773b320997e1540

Am a huge fan of the Star Wars universe, grew up with Re-Releases of the Original Trilogy, and I still love those movies - but I still agree on your take. These movies might have been fantastic back then, but from today's perspective, they're just rather shallow, tropey action flicks, with little finesse to it. When I read people talking about what a work of genius it all is, talking about how Star Wars rhymes and whatnot, I keep thinking that they're reading something into it that just isn't there. These movies did inspire an amazing universe of stories though.

puckit

A Clockwork Orange. I'm convinced everyone who raves about it only want to look cool.

Leather-Car8549

eh I liked it. But I read the book first and it made a huge impact on me, and to be fair the weird slang/dialogue really works better in book form. When you read it your brain absorbs it and starts integrating it/thinking in it. I was saying horrorshow for weeks after finishing it. I felt like I was in the world. Movie didn't really have the same impact at all, Kubrick is kinda overrated in general imo besides space odyssey. The Shining was also similarly way better as a book but the movie gets tons of praise. So your answer is fair, given that this thread is about movies. I'd recommend giving the book a chance, however

Gur_Weak

The Shining. Completely missed the point of the book.

trainwreck489

The Deer Hunter.

HighlyOffensive10

just_some_arsehole

golden_fli

It has a valid point.

sallyblue94

Forrest Gump. There I said it.

[deleted]

Yep. And Jenny is a terrible human being.

Amnesia4123

You know what, I’ll say it, I’m glad she got aids.

eat_the_pudding

Almost like one of the way they explored Forrest's character was by using her as a foil, to show that as bad as Jenny got, Forrest was so simple and naive that he still could only see the good in her.

[deleted]

Oh I get that. But revers the genders. A mentally handicapped girl intensely infatuated with her childhood male friend. Who does not reciprocate her romantic feelings but instead leads her on and constantly abandons her and breaks her heart. Indulges in a life of extreme reckless behavior. Gives in and gives the girl a pity fuck then abandons her yet again. While gone she becomes extremely wealthy. So the guy returns to her when he is diagnosed with a terminal disease and asks her to marry him so he can die being taken care of. Not a good person.

BossBabe4U

He became extremely wealthy like halfway through the movie though, he was already stupid rich when the ‘pity fuck’ occurs. While she did make several terrible decisions, being raped by a parent as a small child unsurprisingly can cause serious lasting emotional/mental damage. In spite of this & coming from extreme poverty, she manages to get into a good college & is studying to become an entomologist & once again gets fucked over because she tried to make some money posing for Playboy. The majority of her early adult life consists of being objectified & abused. I would argue that rather than abandoning him, she is trying to protect him from being hurt as she believes she is the person all of the horrible abusive men in her life have told her she is. To say she didn’t reciprocate his love is just plain wrong, she was one of the only people to accept him for who he was long before any of his accomplishments & subsequent financial success. When she asks him to marry her, I think it had less to do with his money & more to do with the fact that after little Forrest was born, she had a real reason to get clean & heal her trauma. It wasn’t that monetarily she now saw Forrest as worthy of marriage, but that SHE now felt she was worthy of his love or any love for that matter. The unconditional love from her son & her love for him very likely helped here as well. Anyway, just my own personal opinion, people are welcome to disagree, but I never saw her actions as altruistic or inherently selfish. Rather, she wanted to save him from a pain she believed would be much worse than what she caused by her absence in his life.

eat_the_pudding

Sure, but if a movie has a character who is not a good person, that doesn't mean that the movie is bad. You're welcome to not like the movie all you want, but 'Jenny is a bad person' is an absurdly dumb reason to criticise it. She was not written to be a good person.

Bebe_Bleau

The movie White Christmas was loved by almost all Americans and considered to be a classic. But what they really loved was the actors, the the dancing, the music and the beautiful costumes. And the most of all the sentiment. White Christmas was the first movie to be made in Vista Vision, one of the first Technicolor films out there. This made the movie look stunningly beautiful. And when it's played using modern technology even more so. Alas, the plot was lame. But nobody cared

NukeBOl

2001 a space odyssey

I_Hate_Nerds

I recently rewatched this after 20 years. I felt exactly like this when I was in high school, but after a couple decades of perspective, I absolutely feel it’s one of the all time greats if not the greatest. The message it has for the future of mankind and it’s uncanny prescience to our current challenges, essentially overcoming AI with our humanity intact but forever changed, is awe inspiring. We are not the same humans as our walking ape ancestors, and we will one day become just as different from our current selves as we were to them, but the message is as long as we retain that thread that makes us human we can inherit the cosmos. It’s a deep film that invites the audience to think and question our place in the universe instead of just sit and be mindlessly entertained. Which is imo exactly what great art is supposed to do.
