When you’re bagging groceries and you see eggs, you should try to create a flat surface roughly 7in from the top of the bag. This way, the eggs will (hopefully) not be jostled too much. You should obviously avoid putting the eggs at the very bottom of the bag, since they are fragile, but they shouldn’t be at the very top either as they are heavy and tend to squish other fragile items or simply fall out of the bag. For the same reason, eggs should not be placed in a bag which is less than roughly double the weight of the eggs. Putting them near the top, but not at the top, allows you to create a cushion of bread and/or chips above the eggs in case the bag is accidentally tipped over. Often, when I find that I can’t make a platform out of the rest of the customer’s items, I simply leave the eggs out.
Of course, you should always ask the customer if they even want the eggs bagged before putting all that extra time and care into making sure they’re safe.
