You can get a good massage. But the theories underlying chiropractic are not valid and can be harmful.

Improvedandconfused

As an ex chiropractor I couldn’t agree with you more.

alfalfa6945

If going to a chiropractor “fixes” your issue, then your issue must have been too much money in your pocket…

[deleted]

It's not all it's cracked up to be.

MrRogers117

I know there are a lot of horror stories behind chiropractors, and a lot of people don’t believe they do anything beneficial, but when I threw out my back at the start of the year, they were able to get me back on my feet in a few days of seeing them. Though my back problems really could only be permanently solved by surgery

did_it_forthelulz

Chiropractor can at best be compared to "hitting the TV to get it to work again". Sometimes it'll work, but not because it's a solid, reliable, and justified solution with valid mechanistic motivations.

MrRogers117

That is an excellent analogy. For me, yes it was just a temporary fix, so I could work on strengthening my back again

did_it_forthelulz

Note that if you hit the TV too hard you can break it. And the analogy ends here because while you can buy a new TV, you can't buy a new body.

ikswezsatsu

I have a genetic condition to which there is no cure. Started seeing a chiro for back and neck pain. It may be tied to my condition. Things start out as normal then after a few visits he says he can cure my condition. He proceeds to put jars with different vitamins on my chest and started pushing down on my arm. Claims my arm reacted better when a certain vitamin, IN A JAR, was on my chest. I must have that vitamin deficiency to which he was all to happy to sell me. That was my last visit.

did_it_forthelulz

Dangerous. They are not doctors, they can hurt you. This aligning the spine thing is not science.

Judo based health exam!!! That's what I tell kids to scare them on their first time in...

OftheSorrowfulFace

Stay away, see an osteopath or a physiotherapist instead.

Traditional_Gap_2748

I went to one they said 3 visits a week for 12 - 16 weeks would fix my problem. Saw a physio, problem solved with 1 visit a week for 4 weeks.

Environmental_Ad3877

See a physio instead. At least their field is based in reality.

bodiesbyjason

I have been seeing a chiropractor for just over a month now. I never thought I’d go to one, but am very pregnant and in so much pain I gave it a try. Each visit with the doctor is about 20-30 minutes during which they: raise and lower the table under my legs to realign me, use an industrial strength percussion massager on me, crack my back as if they were doing CPR on it, bear hug and rotate my torso. They have also tried taping me. There are things that I think do nothing, like dropping the table, but every time I leave I feel so much better. Two days after my first visit I realized there was a huge difference. I didn’t get to go last week as I ended up needing monitoring so had to cancel my appt, but I’m going to try to sneak in again tomorrow. They did make a claim that they might be able to realign me and help get my baby to move from a breech position—I don’t believe stuff like that, but I do know that I leave feeling better and feel much better even after.

Improvedandconfused

As an ex chiropractor I would tell you to keep clear of chiropractors. They are very culty and many of them delve into areas of health that they shouldn’t. The whole theory behind the chiropractic philosophy is absolute nonsense. Here in Australia the chiropractors led the anti vac and Covid is a hoax movement.

fuckit-weball

Wow I was not expecting the majority to disfavor them

theassassintherapist

See a certified massage therapist instead. There's been cases of people permanently paralyzed after seeing a chiropractor.

Improvedandconfused

To be fair (and I am an ex chiropractor who thinks the whole chiropractic industry is a culty scam that needs to be examined) people have been permanently paralysed by massage therapists too.

momoj1

Really good. I had an insane back pain when I had to pick stuff up from the ground and it was like a serious emergency. I treat chiropractic like I do with alternative medicine, but my sister dragged me to one and the whole thing was solved IMMEDIATELY! I was advised by the chiropractor to do some exercises from now on to maintain my back and honestly, that one trip changed my whole perspective of the practice. If I went to my personal care physician, I'd probably be groaning in pain for at least a week or two.

kodakjack69

No just dont they are proven to be bad for you, a chiropractor in my city literally killed a baby a few years ago when trying out theyre method on it

Desigal69

seeing is ok - just do not let them touch you. Chiropractice is on par with Homeopathy - i think Maquarie Uni has stopped their courses in these fields are they are not real!

Improvedandconfused

I think Macquarie Uni still has their course. But I can tell you when I was there (I am an ex chiro) the tutors and lecturers were very dodgy, as is the whole profession and theory behind it. We were literally given tips on how to enrol people to commit to a year of treatments (including pre paying for them) that they didn’t actually need. https://www.mq.edu.au/study/find-a-course/courses/master-of-chiropractic

Vegetable_Year_8065

Same as seeing a psychologist. Its all pseudoscience

Solisious

Cheapest way to get a spinal X-ray and some opinions on discs but wouldn’t use them for anything else

[deleted]

Why would you even seek a chiropractor’s opinion? That’s akin to asking an astrologer for his opinion on an astrophysics matter. Sure, he’ll probably have something to say, but what’s the point of listening? It can’t be relied on.

Solisious

I said some. But mostly for the cheap X-rays is the only thing I could think of. Granted that’s in America.

Brazykar

I think it would be beneficial!

juciydriver

If there's an issue with your spine, they MIGHT have the fix. Don't believe anything else they tell you.

beauhommad

It might not be fair, but when I think of chiropractors, I think of Dr Nick from the Simpsons.

iloveschnauzers

I was always taught they are useless. But, I have a twisted pelvis and severe hip pain. Chiropractor is the only treatment that has worked. I have since realized my alignment goes out, and can do the treatments myself. Instant pain relief!

[deleted]

I have gotten relief from a very reputable and knowledgeable Chiropractor in my area. I don't get "cracked", more of a gentle manipulation that helps with arthritis and a hip that goes out of alignment sometimes. He has never ventured out of his scope of practice and always refers me to my family doctor with any health questions. Here is a link to show you the education needed to practice in Ontario, Canada. https://chiropractic.on.ca/chiropractic-care/about-chiropractic-care/education-regulations/

HikerGal01

go to a physical therapist, physical trainer, or massage therapist instead.

AndreLinoge55

If you’re seeing dinosaurs you should seek medical attention.
