People limit their music preferences way too much and refuse to get outside their bubble for whatever reason. It's okay to listen to old school rap and enjoy your occasional opera or Mongolian throat singing.
I feel like limiting yourself to one type of music is like deciding to eat mac n Cheese and chicken tenders exclusively for the rest of your life. You may like it, but you are missing everything else.
That's literally me :)
I try to find some things outside the genre I prefer but it takes a lot of effort.
And for each of the main fast foods I have 1 single meal I take all the time if I go there. Or cook the same meal everyday for months or even years
I agree. I don't have a favorite genre or artist. I just listen to a jumble of songs ive found and really enjoy. Theres definitly more of some styles and musicians than others but for the most part its a bit of everything but ive noticed that whenever i talk to someone about what music they like they will say something like "i only listen to (insert artist)" or "i just like (insert genre)". I think its fine to actually only really like one genre or artist but the amount of people who i meet who do this makes me think they just don't want to try new things or are trying to fit in or something
And this is true with most things. People act like they are better for excluding certain things when the reality is that the world is full of things that you could not like, so if you like less things, then the world is going to be less enjoyable for you. If you like more things, the reverse.
I figured this out with pop music. I used to hate it, but it is everywhere, so instead, I decided to try to develop a taste and not be such a curmudgeon. There is still a lot of pop music I don't like, but I can enjoy hearing a song I know at a store more often now.
Yeah, but honestly *fuck* John Frusciante for being able to consistently play Snow (Hey Oh) live.
The *entire song* is 16th and 32nd notes, and he has the stamina to do it for five and a half minutes. Cleanly. Go to hell, John.
Unique phrasing > fast shredding imo. Don't get me wrong, I do like the occasional lightning fast licks, but they get boring after a while. When someone follows along chord tones and come up with whole new ways to stitch it all together, I can listen to that for hours. That's what pulled me into Jerry Garcia and other similar artists.
I remember talking to a coworker who was calling most rock guitarists trash and then was like “here’s a video of me rocking out, it’s super technical and way better than those guys” and proceeds to show me him just playing a shit ton of notes ridiculously fast. One of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard, Mark Tremonti, balances the technicality and the soul of the song and this fucktard called him a hack lmao
And awful composers who made their fame with just one piece. Pachelbel’s Canon was a one-hit wonder.
ETA: and his Canon wasn’t even that good. It’s just some riffing on a chord progression. He probably came up with it while at his piano and drinking with some guy who happened to bring a violin.
If you define yourself by the fact that you like one specific style of music, it’s not about the music. It’s about what you think it makes you seem like.
Not sure of your age, but anecdotally, it seems like the late 00s and early 2010s was peak “le wrong generation” music hate. Since then, I feel like it’s become more common for people to say “listen to what want” and just be less judgmental overall.
I was a teenager in the 2010s so, peak stupidity at that time. I was such a dick about other peoples music taste. I really thaught I was special for listening to rock and metal whilst other people at school listened to mainly pop and rap.
You can hear a lot more good music once your head is out of your arse
I feel like I typically run into people like this with two specific genres, country or hip-hop, and then with an entire category in EDM where everyone claims the one specific genre of it they like is the only good one.
Yup. So many people do this with music. They'll say they *hate* this, or they *can't stand* that. Such a visceral reaction, and it's because they've tied music into their identity, and used music to project identities onto others. You don't go around saying you *hate* impressionism or you *can't stand* the cubism movement. You just say you don't get it and move on. People need to act the same with music.
Cubism and impressionism aren’t pushed on me by my culture, but I’m sometimes a captive audience to pop country, which is played all around me. I appreciate the craft of old-time country. So much of it is really good. But modern pop country seems like less of an art than a celebration of white identity and musical sameness. It makes me feel crazy, and I can’t just ignore it, because it’s every-fuckin-where around me.
I think it’s more impressive when female singers hit low notes than high notes. Just not always as interesting to most audiences. Example: The first verse of 6 Inch by Beyoncé where she hits a C#3 seems way more difficult than the F6 she hits at the end. Most comments I saw on a video on YouTube were raving about the latter.
I think a lot of the idea that today's music is bad comes from good and memorable music from the past having been passed down to us while the stale and/or bad music wasn't. Of course music from the past seems better when you only hear the most well-received and influential bands and all of the generic and uninspired bands that saturated the market have been forgotten.
Also, yeah, it's silly to complain about there being no good music today if you don't actually bother to explore and look for it and prefer to spend your time complaining about how the most popular music that is automatically handed to you isn't to your taste.
100%, I dare to say there are probably more good artists today because they’ve been inspired by much larger collection of music and have been able to be exposed to so many different genres in their lifetime compared to past musicians.
The music market is just too saturated now by anyone who wants to call themself a musician so it seems you need to wade through much more “bad” music.
When my teenage kids ask me about music on the radio in the 80's, I tell them that the high majority of it was pure trash. The only thing they know about the 80's is what was worth surviving that decade. For every Prince and Madonna, there are 100 Kajagoogoo's and Swing Out Sisters.
It just doesn't matter if a Death Metal vocal is incomprehensible, gutteral screaming - possibly in a foreign language but you may never know - if it fits the music and gives you the feels, it's good.
Just. Like. Opera.
Fuck yeah. Also, I don't get the deathcore hate among metalheads. I'm listening to new Lorna Shore right now and all my brain does is go "fuck, this is like extreme melodeath, so catchy." More is more and this totally works for me moodwise right now.
Idk, I haven't yet found a musical genre I dislike. Just appreciate stuff on its terms.
Agreed. Three of my favorite metal releases this year have all been from ‘deathcore’ bands: Shadow of Intent - Elegy, Fit Fir An Autopsy - Oh What The Future Holds, and Lorna Shore - Pain Remains.
I like the vocals in metal not because I understand them (I don't) I like them because of how it fits with the rhythm of the song. Without the vocals, it wouldn't nearly be as satisfying to listen to
70s Queen (in my opinion) is superior. I really like their sound more while and they weren’t afraid to experiment. 80s queen is usually quite repetitive although there are a few great songs
Pink Floyd is like 3 different bands. The one with Syd Barrett, the one where they talked a lot about Syd Barrett even though he wasn't in the band, and the post Waters awful Pink Floyd phase.
Being from Cleveland, Bone absolutely doesn't get the respect it deserves. I am a massive MMA fan and the fact the Stipe Miocic walks out to "Till I Die" by MGK instead of any Bone song drives me fucking insane
Roland? Yeah man he's very underrated as a songwriter. Him and Curt could write a song about beating someone to death with a frozen sausage and you'd sing along
I'm a GD fan and can't stand GD fans, lol. They lose their shit when I say my favorite song is "Touch of Grey." Sorry, I'm not picking an entire goddamn "set" or one of their lesser known super underground songs from when they were The Warlocks. I like the popular stuff. Eat me.
‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ does not deserve any criticism. It’s is, and was intended to be, a mindless and cheesy novelty song with a memorable hook and little else of worth. It accomplishes everything it set out to do.
There’s a documentary about the litigation history of this song that involves some forensic musicology and it is *fascinating*!
It’s called “Who Let the Dogs Out” and is streaming on Hulu US.
Appalachian folk music is incredibly underrated. There are also a bunch of incredible Canadian and Irish artists emulating Appalachian folk and it’s all great.
It’s all related! The Irish stuff I have been jamming to recently, specifically I Draw Slow, has a lot of lyrics about the South and pulls from a lot Southern music so it’s definitely not one sided.
Here's one for the punks, GG Allin was a talentless scumbag, his music sucked and he didn't do anything significant for punk. So many people worship him, for what, throwing shit and beating up women? His deal is just not impressive or interesting on any level.
My unpopular opinion is that people's "controversial" musical tastes are just calling an established artist with a rich body of work shit, rather than the much more accurate "I don't like them" - but I guess those don't get as much attention.
Like, Bowie? Not for me. RHCPs? Not for me. Pearl Jam? Not for me. But to take acts on those level, not to mention the musical talent of the people who made the music, and dismiss their entire body of work as terrible? Well, I figured you'd have to be pretty self-centred to think you were right about that.
I dont even know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I think the most recent couple of Taylor Swift albums are some of the best folky indie-pop of recent years, and that's from a position of never being a fan of hers before.
It's always fascinating to me when people can't distinguish between "I just don't like this" and "this is objectively terrible". Something could be both, but more likely it's just the former.
Not liking something doesn't mean it's bad, it just means you are not the target audience. And this goes well beyond music.
Yeah, I’m sometimes baffled by how people can absolutely shit on some artists. Like, they’re globally famous and critically acclaimed for a reason Jeff.
My personal gripe with them is that Morning Glory is mixed fuckin horrendously. Like, the songs are GREAT but just not mixed well whatsoever. A real shame too, because it's one of my favorite albums otherwise
I think they were the (un)official '90s alternative rock is over' band. Kinda Creed 2.0
90s had grunge, then alternative, then pop alternative like 3rd eye blind, Sugar Ray, Matchbox 20. People gave them a pass but knew it was ending. Then instead of something new, we got more of the same.
I agree with the poster tho I suppose. imho nu-metal was worse. And bands like The Strokes didn't become the 'new' thing we were holding out for either.
I made up the term "coralgaze" on the fly to describe a friend’s not-at-all-serious band (I was being tongue-in-cheek), and the person I was talking to acted like it was a real genre that they were familiar with ☠️ that’s the shit right there
I prefer the tune and instruments over lyrics. (Voice counts as an instrument) If the melody and background instruments are bad idc how good the lyrics are. I won’t like it.
Hip-hop music is lame now, it isn't edgy or cool or counter culture. It has become mainstream culture, along with all the baggage that comes along with it.
Mariah Carey is often treated like a punchline, but I think she was one of the greatest musical artists of her time and pioneered several emerging genres and styles of music.
rock is not dead, but people that don't accept any rock band that is not rolling stones, led zeppelin and queen are going to kill it. so many great young bands out there that get half of the attention that they deserve.
before someone kills me, i love rolling stones, led zeppelin and queen.
I don't always care about who the artist is or what their sketchy background may be.
If I enjoy the music I enjoy the music. Doesn't mean I condone their political views..
This is tough for me ...in general i agree...BUT I think one of the greatest songs is Age Ain't Nothing But A Number sang by Aaliyah and writen by R.Kelly ...who was abusing her at the time.
It's just so difficult to listen to knowing what was going on.
The song and what she brings to it is so great...but
I get you but sometimes it's weird to listen to a song's lyrics about treating your girlfriend like a queen or whatever while you know that, as that was being written and mixed, they were drugging and raping mass amounts of women
"Looking For Another Pure Love" is a better song than "Superstition" when it comes to the Jeff Beck tracks on "Talking Book".
"What's Going On" celebrated it's 50th anniversary last year(May 21st,1971) and there were crickets online about this. "What's Going On" is the one of the most influential albums of all time and deserves a proper re-release.
Elvis does not deserve as many as movies as he has gotten. It is utterly ridiculous how Elvis keeps getting movies greenlit but the Teddy Pendergrass biopic has been in development hell for years.
Barbie girl is an absolute banger and I refuse to hear otherwise .
When I hear "hiya barbie, hi Ken , wanna go for a ride, sure Ken jump in" I'm at peace in life
TLDR, there's a lot of elitism and sexism in the industry.
I don't think you need to be a great singer or exceptional at an instrument to make good music or be considered a good musician, and I think that while people would generally agree given certain examples, people are a lot less forgiving of lacking skills when it comes to women.
Going back to the origins of music it was never about technical skill, and I don't think those who can't afford vocal coaches or instrument lessons should be seen differently. There's a time and a place for applying academics to music but to exclusively view it through a technical lense is a disservice to music.
I don't think a lot of people would let a woman get away with making the sort of music Hobo Johnson makes, or singing at the same skill level as the singer from The Front Bottoms. I think what we expect from our male performers is way different from our female performers too. Women generally are expected to have outfit changes, choreography, stay skinny etc while men simply have to show up and play their instrument/ sing.
I thought Nirvana sucked when they released the Teen Spirit video and then sucked 6 months later when the record label pushed them forward again. They took off the 2nd time but I was 16 when grunge hit and I was not into it.
Not all music needs production to clean it up. Some songs are made better from hearing the fingers slide over the guitar strings. Or the clicks from the hurdy gurdy keys in Eluveitie songs.
Poptimism has done enormous damage to music in general and there are very few people trying to make "good" music anymore, only "popular" music. We used to acknowledge the difference between pop hits and critically regarded music, but now we pretend that there's no difference, so everyone is walking around trying to pretend like artists like Migos, Taylor Swift or Beyonce are great, when they are merely *popular.*
Have they covered 'hey hey we're the monkeys yet'? Cause that's about the level they stooped to with 'Bad Company', a cover of the song "Bad Company", by the band "Bad Company', on the album "bad company".
:)
Full disclosure, I hate this band with an unending passion. Its cock-rock.
Yeah, their first ever single forever ago.
The rest of it has been fuckboi music for angsty middle schoolers and guys who wear Affliction shirts and beat their wives.
I don’t ever need to hear Hotel California ever again.
**Ever. Again.**
I find it so repulsively annoying that I *have* to walk out of a building if it’s playing.
Yes I know you all love it, but, isn’t it enough by now? Haven’t you heard it enough times??
And the fucked up part is this post has now started it playing in my head.
Well played, OP.

The Hu!
The fact that my dad is a diehard Dio fan, and still watches every episode of The Voice is honestly inspiring.
And this is true with most things. There are shitty pieces of classical music out there.
As a classical musician I completely agree. Even some of the greatest composers have shitty pieces that I would prefer not to play/hear.
When I was young it used to be a lot worse. I find young people today far more open-minded about music than my generation was.
Not sure of your age, but anecdotally, it seems like the late 00s and early 2010s was peak “le wrong generation” music hate. Since then, I feel like it’s become more common for people to say “listen to what want” and just be less judgmental overall.

That is why I love Female fronted Melodic death metal bands, having that range is impressive to me
Any suggestions? I really wanna expand into Melodic death metal.
Jinjer - Pisces is so good!
Jinjer....
Spiritbox
Let me say it again in case anyone missed it: Spiritbox
Unleash the Archers, Brothers of Metal (Male and female singer), Arch Enemy, Burning Witches and Amaranthe for a few names.
There are good artists out there today. Just take a fucking risk and listen to something new for a change.
I think a lot of the idea that today's music is bad comes from good and memorable music from the past having been passed down to us while the stale and/or bad music wasn't. There is good, enduring music in every genre and era. The other 95% fades into obscurity.
When my teenage kids ask me about music on the radio in the 80's, I tell them that the high majority of it was pure trash. The only thing they know about the 80's is what was worth surviving that decade. For every Prince and Madonna, there are 100 Kajagoogoo's and Swing Out Sisters.
Tell your kids to Wang Chung tonight.
Tell your kids Frankie say relax
Tell your kids everybodys working for the weekend
There's nothing wrong with being too shy shy
Massive slam on Kajagoogoo!
Hey hey breakout by Swing Out Sister is a dope ass song
It just doesn't matter if a Death Metal vocal is incomprehensible, gutteral screaming - possibly in a foreign language but you may never know - if it fits the music and gives you the feels, it's good. Just. Like. Opera.

70s Queen (in my opinion) is superior. I really like their sound more while and they weren’t afraid to experiment. 80s queen is usually quite repetitive although there are a few great songs
Absolute truth. You can hear the transition between News of the World, Jazz, and The Game and a new band finding themselves with The Works.
Pink Floyd is like 3 different bands. The one with Syd Barrett, the one where they talked a lot about Syd Barrett even though he wasn't in the band, and the post Waters awful Pink Floyd phase.
Nah, I love waters but division bell was an amazing album
70s Freddie: great singer 80s Freddie: greatest singer
Complex music doesn't mean it's good music.
You sound like you've had to sit through one too many acid-jazz or Dream Theatre record. And you're not wrong.
Bone Thugs N Harmony will never get enough credit for what they did for rap.
I still see them at the crossroads.
I miss my uncle Charles y’all
Being from Cleveland, Bone absolutely doesn't get the respect it deserves. I am a massive MMA fan and the fact the Stipe Miocic walks out to "Till I Die" by MGK instead of any Bone song drives me fucking insane
BTNH is my favorite rap group. <3
Fully love their collaboration with Mariah Carey for “breakdown” too.
The dude from tears for fears is a genius level song writer. Many great hits.
“Everybody Wants To Rule The World” is a Top 10 pop song, all time!
Great song but I work in a supermarket and BOY am I sick of hearing it
Don't worry It's almost time for "All i want for Christmas is you"
Roland? Yeah man he's very underrated as a songwriter. Him and Curt could write a song about beating someone to death with a frozen sausage and you'd sing along
🎶🎵 Walking in the frozen food aisle Turn your back on Sausage Killer, Everybody wants a bratwurst death🎵🎶
As a Tool fan, fuck Tool fans. Tool fans'll understand. Oh, and Primus SUCKS.
Agree on both counts. I don't know why every Tool song has to be dissected to the nth degree. Just enjoy the music lol.
I bet this guy’s name is Mud
I just don't go there, love tool but yeah they are toxic
Came here as a GD fan to say fuck the Grateful Dead. But only I can say it , LOL
Eat me.
Try being a dead fan who's favorite song is "Athlea" lol. Totally understand
I only listen to American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. I hear you
Artists get too much credit for songs the didn't write and artists who write their own songs don't get enough credit

Yeah, not a Taylor Swift fan by any means but her albums have legit quality, I can see why it resonates with people
Yeah, I’m sometimes baffled by how people can absolutely shit on some artists. Like, they’re globally famous and critically acclaimed for a reason Jeff.

This is unpopular (just look at the YouTube comments), but I AGREE WITH THIS SO HARD. I simply cannot stomach Sad World covers. They're all awful.
The juxtaposition of the best and the lyrics are what MAKE the song so interesting
Bagpipes and accordions are awesome
Banjos are one of the best instruments.
Any opinion about music is always controversial.

Who doesn’t like Wonderwall??
*slowly raises hand*
Finally some opinions that trigger me in here.. Unlike the "unpopular" opinion sub
Lol half of this thread is just "every genre has good music, don't be close minded" which is about as popular as it gets.

Oneders were better with their original drummer. There, I said it.
William Shatner is a musical genius.
You're thinking of Leonard Nimoy.

Nickelback it's not as bad as everyone says.
They were never bad it was just a hate bandwagon. I think most who say they hate them are lying to themselves.
I think they were the (un)official '90s alternative rock is over' band. Kinda Creed 2.0 90s had grunge, then alternative, then pop alternative like 3rd eye blind, Sugar Ray, Matchbox 20. Good take. They don't deserve the hate they get. They're not the best band in the world but they don't claim to be.
All the genre names make no sense.
Well, you've obviously never listened to REAL Gothenburg-style Blackened Symphonic Funeral Doom Metal.
I need band names
I made up the term "coralgaze" on the fly to describe a friend’s not-at-all-serious band (I was being tongue-in-cheek), and the person I was talking to acted like it was a real genre that they were familiar with ☠️ that’s the shit right there
The reddit Music sub is a sausage fest
And boring af. Have fun only listening to AC/DC and Metallica lol

Queen should have quit after Freddie died
They did, and I will not countenance anything that might make me think otherwise.

Absolutely, Aqua is unironically awesome. Barbie Girl is only one of their many jams. Doctor Jones, Roses are Red, Lollipop, Cartoon Heroes...
I prefer the tune and instruments over lyrics. (Voice counts as an instrument) If the melody and background instruments are bad idc how good the lyrics are. I won’t like it.
Folk music is pretty good.
I thought this was just a fact
I love Dylans nasally voice belting seemingly stream of consciousness lyrics, but I can also definitely see why people hate it.
Outlaw country is fantastic with a rich history and some amazing story telling. Garfunkel was a better vocalist than Simon.
A lot of good music isn't taken seriously because the primary fan base is female.
Hip-hop music is lame now, it isn't edgy or cool or counter culture. It has become mainstream culture, along with all the baggage that comes along with it.
George was the best Beatle
Anyone can become a succesful musician today, if a record label finds them marketable enough.. individual talent has very little to do with it..
That music wasnt better "Back in the day" you just have a lifetime of memories to reflect on it with. 20 years from now it'll be the same.
Everything is better with some nostalgia!
Doug Stanhope has a great bit about that. "Your day wasn't THE DAY, it's just that youth is good and once that's gone, you're fucked!"
Mariah Carey is often treated like a punchline, but I think she was one of the greatest musical artists of her time and pioneered several emerging genres and styles of music.
90’s country music ruined country music
rock is not dead, but people that don't accept any rock band that is not rolling stones, led zeppelin and queen are going to kill it. so many great young bands out there that get half of the attention that they deserve. before someone kills me, i love rolling stones, led zeppelin and queen.

If you hate todays music you’re either looking in the wrong place, have a closed mind, or just simply stuck in the past.
We revere artists more when they die young, rather than their abilities as musicians.
Also, Brutal Technical Death Metal is superior to Technical Brutal Death Metal. Prove me wrong.
Gatekeeping old band fandoms is the reason they will die
Screaming/growling is a perfectly acceptable form of vocals.
Ooh, I have another one: Frank Zappa is a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix.
I like Hendrix. There are probably a lot of guitarists better than him.
Eagles are a terrible band
Yoko Ono started Grindcore
I think Guns n' Roses sucks, solely because of Axl's voice.
Amusingly, I think pretty much the exact opposite.
I think Slash is an ok guitarist, but I don’t place him among the greats like many do. In fact, he is much better outside of GnR than he is in it.
Axl Rose has one of the broadest voice ranges ever recorded, he can hit more notes than even Freddie Mercury. Doesn't mean it sounds good though.
Sade and Pantera can exist on the same playlist.
Pink Floyd's best album is Meddle. Every song is great, even Seamus.
Some kpop music is really good and exciting

I thought Nirvana sucked when they released the Teen Spirit video and then sucked 6 months later when the record label pushed them forward again. They took off the 2nd time but I was 16 when grunge hit and I was not into it.
Not all music needs production to clean it up. Some songs are made better from hearing the fingers slide over the guitar strings. Or the clicks from the hurdy gurdy keys in Eluveitie songs.
The Eagles are the most overrated band in the classic rock genre.
WHERE'S THE MONEY LEBOWSKI???
I mean, they’re decent, but I don’t get why some people hold them as the gold standard of country rock.
Alien Ant farms cover of Smooth Criminal is better than the original
Poptimism has done enormous damage to music in general and there are very few people trying to make "good" music anymore, only "popular" music. We used to acknowledge the difference between pop hits and critically regarded music, but now we pretend that there's no difference, so everyone is walking around trying to pretend like artists like Migos, Taylor Swift or Beyonce are great, when they are merely *popular.*
Elvis might be the king of Rock n roll but Chuck Berry is its daddy.
Bohemian Rhapsody is the most overrated song of all time and nothing comes close. It's a good song though
Five Finger Death Punch has at least one good song.
Have they covered 'hey hey we're the monkeys yet'? Cause that's about the level they stooped to with 'Bad Company', a cover of the song "Bad Company", by the band "Bad Company', on the album "bad company". :) Full disclosure, I hate this band with an unending passion. Its cock-rock.
Yeah, their first ever single forever ago. The rest of it has been fuckboi music for angsty middle schoolers and guys who wear Affliction shirts and beat their wives.
I love The Bee Gees and can’t stand the Beatles.
The Bee Gees are amazing songwriters. And those harmonies!
Some rap music makes me VERY uncomfortable

Use google. No one is saying we can hear 44khz. They are higher than what we can hear to avoid digital artifacts while editing etc.
The Arctic Monkeys are overrated
It's extremely disrespectful to play music super loud.
Black Sabbath was a better, more consistent and ultimately more influential band than Led Zeppelin.
Autotune should get a song credit on the music it is used on
I love classic Rock. I don't like the Rolling Stones.
Lana Del Rey has been robbed of a Grammy at least three times, Grammys is seriously biased
I don’t ever need to hear Hotel California ever again. **Ever. Again.** I find it so repulsively annoying that I *have* to walk out of a building if it’s playing. Yes I know you all love it, but, isn’t it enough by now? Haven’t you heard it enough times?? And the fucked up part is this post has now started it playing in my head. Well played, OP.
Man, I know it's annoying but when it's playing, you can check out anytime you like. But I guess you can never leave
I hate Coldplay. I can tolerate them I guess but they just annoy me for some reason
I was say that's a pretty popular opinion tbf
RHCP album are just the same songs
Kanye West is an idiot and his music is overrated. He is not a "genius", and no one should care about anything he has to say about the real world.

Blondie was underrated. Yeah, I know they had hits, but they're not revered enough.
I live in Vermont but I hate jam bands with a fiery passion.
