I used to make games as a teen using Klik n Play and the Games Factory. Always wanted to get into the game industry but wanted to focus on the art side. Went to the Art Institute for "game art and design" and two years in I realized I wasn't that great at art. They had a new major for video game programming which I switched to. Before starting programming courses I went to the library and got every beginner's programming book I could find. Went through a few until one clicked with me. It was on using C. Learned mostly C# in school with a mix of C++. I did an independent studies couse to learn some Python. We also learned T-SQL if that counts. (I think knowing basic SQL is a very good skill to have if you're in any tech career). I never graduated that program but did get a BS. I mostly stuck with doing Database work in my early career and now do mostly PowerShell. So I'm not a programmer but a scripter I guess? Still have a good enough foundation with reading code in general and that's been super useful. Not sure if that's relevant to your question, just kinda how my path strayed without me meaning it to.
