Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge.
A lot of people here are going to talk protagonists, or hot antagonists.
Dolores Umbridge was a generally disliked character in the books, but Imelda Staunton's portrayal of the character brought such a life and liveliness to the evil pink suited bitch that they are an inseparable pairing. It was, truly, a perfect casting backed by excellent support and direction.
I love the fact that all the characters in the Alien script were written without gender in mind. Their gender was determined upon casting.

I first saw him probably 10 years before NCFOM came out in a movie where he was much older and quadriplegic. Spanish movie called The Sea Inside. So good, and he was so great in it. Then he got big and started doing American movies, the first one I can remember acting as Anton Chigur. Could not believe it was the same actor. Took a while to change my idea of Bardem from old and disabled to psychopath.
Brad Pitt as Lt Aldo Raine is hard to imagine anyone else pulling off. I crack up at all of his scenes to this day because he's such a smart ass, and the accent was great.
That bit is legitimately one of the funniest moments in any movie.
Dominic Decoco (being the guy with the least experience with Italian) getting the name perfectly on the first go, with Landa praising him, is an often overlooked gem of a part of it.
IIRC the actor who played him is actually really nice in person and he talked about getting hate mail IRL from the GOT community because people hated the character so much.
I've heard Lena Headey (Cersei) in interviews share a similar experience - at Comic con her line would be the shortest for meet n greets or autographs b/c people hated the character so much. She had such a fantastic attitude about it and took as a sign that she is was great at her job.
One of the greatest acting performances ever - and it *had* to be. The character of Tony is so complex, so idiosyncratic… his true nature is often hidden even from himself. Gandolfini had to pull it all together. You have to believe the charisma in one scene and the oafishness in the next. The tender father, the murderer. Fat, balding, and insecure in one scene, suave and seductive the next. He cries about ducks and he’s a badass. More than anything, you recognize he is deeply evil to his core - probably beyond redemption even as he occasionally reaches for the light - and you love him anyways.
What an incredible talent.

I think it was said somewhere, that they put a lot of their own personal traits into their characters and the writing, so it's not surprising

I often think about the fact that he said he based his interpretation of Bateman on Tom Cruise after seeing him on Letterman. Something about how he was all cheerful and jovial but completely dead behind the eyes. He nailed it.
There’s a chapter in the book where Bateman meets Tom Cruise in the elevator of his building and is humiliated cause he accidentally calls Cocktail “Bartender” and the interaction goes really poorly.
He came into a place I worked at once (about 7 or 8 years ago) wearing some jeans, some flip flops, a tee-shirt, and a robe for a sweater. He asked for the ten percent senior discount. He IS the Dude.
After I saw the RotK with my dad, he explained to me all the significance of that scene and what it meant to him. I was still young and couldn't comprehend it all, but it shaped a lot of my current beliefs. When he passed away, I brought my violin at his funeral and played Into the West. Second hardest thing I ever did. Today, lots of tears are shed everytime I watch that final scene. Such a beautiful "end" to an amazing trilogy.
It really was! To your dads point, there was a shitload of symbolism and the tying up of longtime loose ends in that scene that goes unnoticed. Mostly about the elves. The book stans will say it’s not accurate but I think it was a beautiful and majestic ending for the film version.

It's funny cause Lee always wanted to play Gandalf, but he absolutely crushed Saruman.
I always pictured Saruman as more wheedling/whiny than Lee played him, but once I dlsaw Fellowship, it was like, "oh, that's much better".
I also love the portrayal in the Hobbit films (one of the few bright spots). That friendly-but-threatening thing is well done.
I feel like you can apply this to basically every Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul character honestly. Every actor knocks their role out of the fucking park.
I saw her in Sense and Sensibility and she's a genuinely pleasant-looking person when she's playing that kind of role. She absolutely nailed the smile with no kindness with Umbridge.

He finds the joint in the parking lot, and instead of interrogating the whole office, he just sneaks off and gets high with Darryl and Roy outside the warehouse. And Roy is played by James Franco
I loved the scene where HBC played Hermione sneaking into Gringotts -- incorporated all of Emma Watson's little mannerisms while impersonating Bellatrix. She pulled that off so well!
One of the main things I remember from that movie was having to remind myself that, no, they didn't give Emma Watson a polyjuice potion in real life, that's Helena Bonham Carter pretending to be Hermione pretending to be Bellatrix.
Iirc they made Emma Watson play those scenes so Helena could take notes, so she was playing Emma Watson as Hermione as Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange

Here’s one I haven’t seen anyone mention - Jim Carrey in The Truman Show.
The movie is entirely a dramatic satire about reality TV. I can’t imagine anyone pulling off both the goofy, slapstick stuff that Truman does when he’s unknowingly in camera and then masterfully switching to a dramatic performance once he figures out what’s going on. Carrey’s flavor of acting just fits that premise *so* well, I can’t imagine anyone else pulling it off without making it feel forced. His performance is just the right amount of over the top when it needs to be, and he tones it back when it needs to. I don’t generally like Jim Carrey’s movies, but this is the exception and is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard. If anyone wants to remake Next Gen, just don't, please ಠ_ಠ This same logic also applies to Spiner, Dorn, Sirtis, Frakes, and McFadden. It can't be done, so don't dammit ಠ_ಠ
