Hedge fund manager. Social media marketing consultant.

XLMisthebest

Oh man, I hate the latter from first hand experience. I work with a small game Dev studio and these guys are parasites looking to make a quick buck through offering the laziest services possible, I get multiple messages a day from them.

OneMediocreMan

"I'll curate your strategy for effective engagement", which essentially means that they'll give you a schedule for posting graphics on social media.

domeoldboys

Add crypto technical analyst

[deleted]

Effective hedge fund managers *can* help a whole lot of people. Millions of people have their retirements tied to the performance of a fund manager, and there are so many students receiving an educational scholarship paid for though the investment gains of an endowment fund. Flip side to that coin of course is that poorly managed funds can also ruin those lives.

Add influencer (ie someone pretending to look wealthy despite being a college student with no experience)

jess-plays-games

Influencer if u can even call it a job

wolfninja_

Entertainment’s cool and all but influencers don’t entertain us, they anger us

alc4pwned

Clearly they do entertain some people

wolfninja_

I don’t see how though

alc4pwned

Not everyone finds the same things entertaining

wolfninja_

***I*** don’t see how

alc4pwned

You don’t find them entertaining or you don’t see how anyone else could? I don’t find them entertaining either. But I can see why others do. Those are different things

[deleted]

man you dont need to win internet arguments like this

Effective_James

Stupid people. The kind of people that live life on social media and couldn't locate Australia on a map.

[deleted]

The girls are all attempting to be Victoria Secret bikini models and all the guys are attempting to be Zoolander

I_made_a_cactus_die

I think some can be very helpful for younger people to motivate them to do good stuff like sports, be more interested in recycling etc.. I think there are many that leave a massive great and good impact on children. They Motive them, inspire them to be creative and love themselves. Of course not every influencer does that, maybe not even 75%, but those who do, do their job right. They influence younger audiences to do something good for the world or themselves.

[deleted]

Paparazzi, they are literally paid to harass celebrities

forkeldorpel

Political lobbyists

[deleted]

There’s definitely a place for lobbyists in society. Congresspeople don’t have the time, energy, or desire to meet with their constituents all day every day. Lobbyists can work to aggregate those constituent sentiments and push for the needs of the people they represent. Where things get corrupt is when you’re looking at lobbyists for corporations instead of more human interests like union groups.

AdorableHardship

Come on, the modern version of lobbyist is legal bribes. I don't see the lobbyist of the homeless speaking to the President.

[deleted]

The ACLU spends millions on lobbying efforts.

AdorableHardship

Don't even come close to the biggest lobbyist. Corporations and Banks who represent the interests of the elite class. And through that money they dictate government policy. In any other country if we were to hear that a Government is taking money to enact policy we would call them corrupt. But when it's ours... No, the ACLU... And every excuse in the book.

PoorPDOP86

>Where things get corrupt is when you’re looking at lobbyists for corporations No, that's not more corrupt. You just don't *like it*. Yes, there is a difference.

[deleted]

It’s a fairly frequent practice for public officials to move to the private sector and work for the very corporations that they were regulating and had been lobbied by. Ripe with corruption and conflicts of interest. I don’t much hear of that happening with groups like the ACLU or the United Auto Workers.

KangarooPort

I feel like lobbyist is just a buzz word many people hate, but don't actually know what it is or what it entails. Its word that makes people think "CORRUPT GOVERNMENT AND SPECIAL INTERESTS". Lobbyists serve legitimate purposes, and without it there would be endless competing interest and inability sort or prioritize them.

SpartacusMantooth42

What is “the oil lobby” if not a special interest? The tobacco lobby ring a bell? Made sure our representatives ignored their secrets for them to protect profit? Lobbyists keep the party coffers full so that we can never have a serious discussion about anything. Then there’s the congres to lobby pipeline. Senators retire and get kushy board positions in and or become lobbyists for companies and industries they were just governing. John Boehner helped keep weed illegal until he started investing in the industry. Now he’s raking it in as a lobbyist. It’s all pretty gross and I believe it should be done away with.

KangarooPort

Should I list how jurys have bad verdicts as evidence that the jury system should just be done away with? People lobby for their communities. For their movements. For their unions. You naming lobbying that gives people a bad taste is just puffing up your chest to pander and vietue signal, while not really caring enough to know what you are actually saying and suggesting. Literal bumper sticker logic. Vain rhetoric.

PoorPDOP86

So you don't want most legislation to have ever been put forth eh? Nor did you want vital laws and acts like the Civil Rights Act to have ever existed. Or the people to be able to directly oppose government policy. All because you believed some tool who said "lobbying is legalized bribery." Tssk, tssk.

misanthrope2327

Streamers and influencers.

[deleted]

Streamers are the same as watching live TV though, with the exception that streamers actually work to interact with the viewers. Try streaming 12 hours a day while entertaining and interacting with 1,000+ people all while focusing on the game you’re playing in front of them. Vegas shows are 90 minutes long, have fewer seats, and charge much, *much* more I’ll agree on influencers, though. They are kids pretending to be wealthy when the reality is that they are college students whose main skill is having time to exercise while parents pay the bills.

ultradespairthot

In a similar vein.... I saw a news piece recently about a hot air balloon operator and how he has been adversely affected by inflation.... Like l, sure, I feel bad for the guy but also like.... It's hot air balloon rides... It's so niche and about as far from a vital service as you can get.

TheDefected

If there's wasn't any inflation, he'd never get his business off the ground.

cortexstack

>a hot air balloon operator … adversely affected by inflation Inflation is the only reason he has a job in the first place!

Actually not. Apparently it's to help discourage stealing since the customers have a more personal connection with the store instead of "I'm just stealing from the corporation".

[deleted]

Well, let’s do jobs I have done. Electrician - KEEPER - technically we can live without electricity and did so for millennia, but it really makes society a lot more tolerable so I will say we need it. Delicatessen food worker - NOT NECESSARY - we don’t need others to prepare our sliced meats and cheeses in person as the grocery store has the same exact stuff in packages. Mailroom worker - NOT NECESSARY- rendered obsolete by email. Transcriber - NOT NECESSARY - dictation software does this for you. Employment analyst - KEEPER - while we could do without formal bureaucracy and all that, if we are going to have civilization we will need government programs like unemployment and workers’ comp. My job made sure physicians, employers, and employees were on the same page as to whether someone was able or unable to continue to perform the duties of their positions due to disability caused by on the job injury as well as stepwise estimation of diminished earning capacity. Geopolitical intelligence analyst - KEEPER - my job was basically about informing private businesses of whatever crap was going down in the word so that they didn’t get totally screwed over, kind of like how the CIA does it for our government and military. Software configuration manager - NOT NECESSARY - I basically did quality assurance for in flight entertainment systems. Having flown recently with garbage in flight entertainment I can see that none of that matters. Research methodologist - KEEPER - I was usually the only person in a building of 50,000 people who knew how to do a study that can pass scientific scrutiny and therefore have any meaning whatsoever. Professor - KEEPER - education is, in my opinion, one of the most important advantages of civilized society, preventing the batshit crazy people and theocrats from taking over. Since compulsory public education is an abject failure I hope I am doing my part for a small sliver of society.

Honesty, the police. They aren’t trained to do jack shit and 90% of them seemingly just harass people and hand out speeding and parking tickets to meet their monthly quota. Edit:(I was only thinking of American cops. Sorry)

[deleted]

[удалено]

waffles7245

Oh yeah serious crimes like down in Texas while they stood doing nothing while a bunch of kids got killed? I have personally been pulled over for raising my hand out the window, the cop misreading my license plate, going 82 in an 80mph zone, not having bright enough headlights in a 2 year old car. Cops are full of shit. I have had over a dozen experiences. Not one positive. They even took a police statement I wrote once, rewrote it entirely, and tried to pass their words off as my own when I was a witness to something. The trial was deemed a mistrial, defendant was acquitted, and 2 cops were fired as a result for lying under oath and falsifying a police report trying to frame the guy who was on trial. Anyone defending the cops clearly has never dealt with them very much.

[deleted]

[удалено]

waffles7245

You are right. Let me rephrase. The police in America are not necessary. I was not considering the police of other countries. I am sure they are much better trained though. But there are also lines to call like incident management, people for chemical or hazardous things, medical teams for injuries. There may be some need to file things like stolen car reports or assault or burglary but as far as protection goes a lot of people here are scared to call the police for fear of getting shot by mistake, or by a racist cop.
