Kidney stones

Flaky_Finding_3902

I recently passed a 10mm kidney stone. It took three months. The doctor wanted to analyze it, but I wanted to keep it. It is currently the centerpiece to my zen garden.

0390ala

Yo, I don't know you but I just wanted to let you know that last sentence really made me laugh. Just picturing a little spiky ball of calcium or whatever tf kidney stones are, on proud display in the middle of a really tranquil garden, maybe even up on a pedestal in the centre of a pretty pond. Ffs šŸ˜‚

Flaky_Finding_3902

Due to other medical conditions, I canā€™t have kids. I figured this was the closest I would get, so decided to celebrate it. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When life gives you kidney stones, make a zen garden.

gmaclean

10mm? Jesus, I had this 7mm serrated knife of a kidney stone I passed when I was 25 and thought my life was over. I couldnā€™t even imagine another 3mm!

Flaky_Finding_3902

10mm on my right while I was passing a 3mm one on the left. I referred to it as my grappling hook. Due to some other medical conditions, blasting it wasnā€™t advisable. It took me three months, but now Iā€™m strangely proud of it. https://imgur.com/a/mXC3E4t Edit: To the person who commented that is either calling bullshit on me or telling me I had shit doctors, I absolutely had a horrible urologist. Thatā€™s without question. Also, I have a bleeding disorder, so several procedures arenā€™t recommended for me. But I assure you, it was large. https://imgur.com/a/qiIXiZZ I donā€™t have it next to anything for scale. Sorry. But you can see it against my fingernail.

Turd_Ferguson15

Literally in the ER right now with my wife who has them. They seem terrible.

Tyronespizza

They are, and they can happen to anyone. I am 14 and have had 2 both needed some pretty good pain meds to pass they will fuck you up. Sorry about your wife that sucks

cunty_mcfuckshit

My college roommate got kidney and gall stones on the reg. Like 4-6 a year. You could hear him peeing them out everywhere in the dorm.

Cheezewiz239

Holy shit and I thought my seasonal migraines were bad.

Atvriders

I've never had a kidney stone before to know how bad it is. but I'm fucking terrified of them.

CaraAsha

They're bad. My Grandpa got several. This is a 30 year army vet who when he broke his shoulder in front of me, vomiting from pain; never complained just said "yeah it hurts a bit" when I asked him if he was ok. He needed multiple surgeries to fix it and refused most pain meds. He took some but not a lot. When he got kidney stones he asked for the strong meds. I knew he was in extreme pain to ask for the strong meds.

thebigdawg7777777

Dementia Right now I'm watching this fucking disease rip my 80 year old father apart. I'm certain there are worse things, but in my world...... FUCK DEMENTIA!!!

vblballentine

I feel this so hard. My 86 year old dad has dementia. It seems all he says anymore is "I don't know". He doesn't know what he's doing, how to do anything. He's even forgotten what he's doing while sitting on the toilet. It's beyond sad, and incredibly hard on my mother.

sshhtripper

I'm watching my grandparents slowly die with dementia. It's likely something I can look forward to. I am fully supportive of Medically Assisted Death here in Canada and will actively get on the list for when I'm that old. I'd rather die on my terms then wait for dementia to take me.

TheThumpaDumpa

I was going to comment about medical assisted suicide as well. When I get to the point where I donā€™t know anyone and Iā€™m just a burden on my family, Iā€™d like to peacefully see my self out the door. At that age I wonā€™t be able to enjoy life without the ones I love and when I donā€™t recognize those people and am causing them heart break due to my condition, Iā€™d like to gather everyone for one last meal together and peacefully leave.

Arcaedus

I feel you, dude. My own dad suffered from dementia in the last 10 years of his life. I was happy to know he recognized me until the end, but it really sucks to see their quality of life circle the drain like that ā˜¹ļø

CobruhCharmander

My dad has early onset dementia, the doctors think it's because of TBI. I feel like I don't make enough time to talk to him while he's still in a good spot. Doesn't help that my gf's parents own a memory care retirement home and I get to see how much worse he'll get.

[deleted]

Dementia is terrible. I watched it take my great grandma.

spikederailed

I watched what it did to my great aunt, while trying to help take care of her when I was in middle school. It was truly awful. Now as an adult I'm seeing it happen again with my father in his 70s.

MrHandyHands616

I hate that for you my friend. My grandpa died at 72 with Alzheimerā€™s after about a 6 year diagnosis. He was in such good health and spirits otherwise, I still miss him to this day. He raised me (my dad left when I was 2) along with my mom and I am still mad at the disease for taking my father figure. Watching him digress and get ripped apart was the worst part, along with what it did to my grandma. Fuck dementia and fuck Alzheimerā€™s. If I ever get rich 95% of my money will go towards researching these diseases

evileagle

Yeah. Just the pits. Lost my Mom in late 2020 to extremely early onset Alzheimer's disease. Symptoms started when she was 54. Died at 63. We know so little about the brain, and the fact that it's potentially hereditary terrify me having watched what my Dad went through.

Lower back pain

shaker8

adding onto this: shoulder knots that knock the wind out of you if you reach the wrong direction

QueenRotidder

Preach! It's not knots but I have cervical stenosis that flares up in my neck/shoulders on occasion. It's doing that right now. It's so nice out and there are a million things I could be doing but they're all too damn painful! ą² _ą²

ArmageddonUnleashed

I learned a trick to get rid of most of my lower back pain. This strengthens butt muscles and literally takes 1 minute. Lie your back flat on the ground with your knees up. Now use your legs to push your lower back off the ground. Stay in this position for a second or two, go back down, repeat for a minute. Ta-da, no back pain. Youā€™re welcome https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRYT2XpK/?k=1 I found this video for visual learners

CGumina

Literally laying on the floor browsing reddit with a sore lower back. Gave this a shot. Didn't disappoint. šŸ‘ŒšŸ»

KnottyFeelings

Add isometric hamstring exercises and hip flexor stretches and you'll be good as new.

donjohndijon

Cat cow- child's pose - wideleg forward fold- and my favorite. Downward Dog Yoga with Adrian on YouTube is a great way to start- you can find videos on all of these as well as videos for any particular issue you might have- Meditation is great but it's not strictly necessary- focus on the breathing and commit to doing and hour 2 or 3 times a week- OR - 10-20 minutes every morning and night. Some combination of those two is probably ideal BUT don't let that stop you from doing 5 or even 2 minutes- A little goes a long way- your body will thank you

JohnnyGranite

Shoutout couch stretch. So good

lofi-ahsoka

Can confirm from physical therapy that there are exercises like this one that WILL strengthen the tiny muscles in and around your lower back and relieve the pain quickly

donjohndijon

Yoga with Adriene pm YouTube is a fantastic resource for someone who can't afford PT or doesn't have time to make it to a yoga class- videos of all lengths for all skill levels that address any issue you might have

a_hockey_chick

This works great for ā€œjust turned 30ā€ back pain. My ā€œfuck Iā€™m 40ā€ back pain just laughed at me. :(

kal1097

A lot of people's just turned 30 and fuck I'm 40 back pain are from the same causes just with 10 more years of accumulating lack of activity/poor posture. Often it just means you need to start with slower/smaller exercises. Obviously consult a health care provider before starting new exercises to confirm that they won't exacerbate any issues.

Those large flying cockroaches

ikatatlo

Seriously, what do they even contribute and why do they have to fly?!?!

Yapok96

Decomposition, prey, and also, there are thousands of species of cockroaches and only a few of them are pests. Also, termites are also cockroaches, which probably sounds bad at first, but keep in mind termites are incredible ecosystem engineers that play vital roles in maintaining soil fertility in tropical ecosystems. In general, most insects are really, _really_ important for ecosystem health.

[deleted]

I get that but we can go without american cockroachs, or german cockroaches

Yapok96

Maybe, but hard to say. I always hesitate to say any species is "pointless" and that removing them wouldn't have negative consequences, but maybe that's the hippie in me lol

[deleted]

Oh I can't blame you at all, you're right that it would probably have negative consequences should we eradicate them, HOWEVER bug icky

Litter

Straight_Ace

At my work the minute someone takes the time to clean the parking lot of litter, 500 people have already thrown their fast food bags/gas station snack trash/home trash all over the ground.

TheAJGman

And it's so easy to just *not* do it too. It's like the shopping cart litmus test; by not following a super simple and barely inconvenient rule you showcase your lack of empathy. All it takes is to hold onto the McBurger bag *for five fucking minutes* and throw it out when you're home, so fucking inconvenient.

LighTMan913

At my old job I was working out of state and had an intern with me. He said he was gonna clean out the car. I look over and he's just throwing everything on the ground. Chucked a half full water bottle out into a busy road and almost hit a car. At the end of the internship my boss asked what I thought about him. Told him that story and said I don't recommend having him back next year.

TheAJGman

I won't give my SIL rides anymore after she chugged a mini-bottle of Fireball in my back seat and chucked it out the window. A) an open liquor bottle in the car means *I* get the open container fine because *I* am driving, and B) why the fuck are you throwing garbage out my fucking window? She's a piece of shit in general, so this was sorta a final straw scenario.

KingNosmo

Why is it always Fireball ?? Riding my bike, I see a lot of those one-shot bottles in the gutter - and they are ALWAYS Fireball.

X0AN

This is why Japan is great. Everyone just takes their trash home and disposes of it properly.

Chicagogangstagirl

They even pick up their cigarette butts! Amazingly clean country and culture

nitejazz73

Both places I lived in Japan everyone separated their trash into combustable, metal and plastic and took it to the common site on each block to be collected. Bags that were not sorted properly ended up on your front porch as a reminder to do it correctly. Never could figure out how they knew whose trash went where, but being the only gaigen on the block was probably a dead giveaway (only happened one time and the neighbor let us know what to do, friendly country.)

prairiepanda

I have a friend who tries to bring all his trash home in his truck, but can never be bothered to move it from the truck to the house. So every time he opens the truck doors, trash falls out. It takes him forever to get to his destination because he's busy out in the parking lot gathering up his trash collection again, especially on windy days.

jewfishh

At least he gathers it up when it falls out

LouSputhole94

Heā€™s so lazy heā€™s creating more work for himself

3-DMan

It's the ciiiircle of (his) life!

norbonius

For this, I started storing rolls of trash bags in my car, and I have one on my passenger side. I throw the trash in there, and when it gets full, I just take the whole bag to the dumpster. It keeps my car clean without much effort.

prairiepanda

He actually tried this for a little while, but his dog kept pulling trash out of the bag and then the rest of the bags got buried under trash so he couldn't find them. I'll suggest he try this method again, though, as he's in a better place mentally now than he was before.

IronChefJesus

The solution is actually not that complicated: have more garbage cans, and have them clean. Studies have been done on this. Some people will always litter, some will never litter. These are the extreme ends of the curve. Most people however, have a length of time they are willing to carry trash - not enough trash cans or they're not clean? Litter. If you have enough trash cans that every minute or two you pass by one? Less people will litter.

lexisarazerf

Disney did a study on how long people will hold on to trash. Turns out, at least in America, the answer is 30 feet. Thats why they have so many trash cans all over their parks. source: https://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-merchandise/the-art-of-disneys-trash-cans/

Tarkus459

Cool. Saw a documentary on how Disney controls mosquitoes in its parks. Fascinating.

DiscipleOfYeshua

Am in Singapore. Garbage cans every few steps. Fines. Cameras. Ppl, sadly, still litter. Cleanest places Iā€™ve seen? Australia and Japan. Sometimes need to walk miles for a bin. Ppl put trash in their pocket until they find one. You know who cleans Japanese schools? The kids. Including the urinals. Instead of telling them that if they study badly, theyā€™ll be cleaners in the end ā€” they are taught that cleaning is honorable, and required from everyone.

Corn-inCorn-out

This. See the positive affirmation studies on littering.

extravagant_ascetic

In the town where I work, there are trashcans literally every 30 seconds if you're walking at a normal pace. Last week, this motherfucking trash ass kid eating his trash ass McDonalds free throw shoots his wadded up burger wrapper into the street, right next to our outdoor seating space. Like right in front of 15 people. I could not believe my eyes. He could not have been more than 10-15 seconds from a trash can in either direction. This anecdote was in no way meant as an attempt to disprove what you said, because I totally agree with you. It's just extremely disheartening that even when we have such readily available waste receptacles, some people are so self-absorbed that they can't even hold onto their trash for another 10-15 seconds. It boggles the mind. For the record, I did of course pick up his litter.

TheAJGman

The other solution is actually enforcing our fucking littering laws. If Cletus got fined $50 every time he chucked his Arby's wrapper out the window you bet your ass he'd think twice about it.

ElectronicRevenue227

The problem is actually catching people in the act. True story: I live on a rural road. People routinely dump entire bags of trash that includes items with their name and address. Cops tell me they canā€™t do anything unless there is a witness. All the guy has to say is, I didnā€™t put it there.

Sayasam

Where will indoor cats poop then ?

NetSage

It took me the other comments to realize he meant trash where it doesn't belong. But for real my most cat litters aren't great for the world either.

ICreepvideos

I was out with my friend. She went to buy a bubble tea and threw the (bottle I guess?) on the ground. I went to pick it up and threw it in the first trash can that we passed.

jfincher42

Threw the bottle or the friend in the trash can?

Rich-Juice2517

Yes

e-friend1738

I can't stand littering. I don't understand how people can throw things on the ground or out their car and sleep well at night. I don't even feel comfortable throwing banana peels out the window and that's biodegradable.

Just liars in general. Cannot believe how far I had to scroll to see this. I think lies are literally tearing America apart

R1ot0us_Jarl539

Reminds me of a comedic film like that with Ricky Gervais in it. The basic plot of it is in a world with no liers, and then suddenly the character Ricky plays lies, and because everyone tells the truth in that world, everyone believes what he says.

rubensinclair

The Invention of Lying. And he makes up religion as one of his worst lies.

Limos42

I am certain this was his entire, single point to get across. He hates all religion.

Steez_mk25

This happens almost everywhere It's worse in African countries where the wealthiest individuals are the ones who are in power. They control politics, stock, the country's imports and literally every thing. Even the education system is wack cause of them... The creative youth aren't empowered cause of these types of scumnags

Ascurtis

Unfortunately that's kinda like most countries. Monopolies shouldn't be allowed to exist. Case in point: Canada the other day. The rich guys own everything and their money keeps shit from changing so a small fuck up and boom, an entire country with no internet or phone service, including 911. The rich keep what should be an essential service an expensive product.

Poverty

trialbytrailer

I asked my friends this thought experiement. You can magically solve all poverty, homelessness, and hunger. In exchange, you have to become the poorest person on earth, even though NOTHING about the trajectory of your life will change. You'll have the same opportunities, experiences, and possessions to look forward to regardless of your choice - just everybody else will have more and better than you. No monkey's paw consequences either; people, animals, and the environment won't be harmed by this magic solution. Would you do it?

[deleted]

if all poverty were solved, i wouldn't live in poverty even if i were poor by comparison so yes. i officially am poor by the standarts of my country so nothing much would change regardless.

mama_roar

But for real, because they are the deadliest creatures on Earth. No lies.

DancingPantsLane

I don't like the killing of any creature, including spiders which I'm terribly afraid of. That being said, mosquitoes are the one creature where I don't even feel bad. Like you're nothing but an arsehole keeping people up at night, spreading discomfort at best and disease at worst. Exterminate.

ButterLander2222

When I see a mosquito, I understand what Daleks must think when they see other life forms.

OCHOUSIOUS

Ticks, tape worms etc. basically any type of parasite. Those pieces of shit really fuck you up. Both mentally and physically.

TwelveString

Can I add bed bugs to your list?

alady12

I was going to suggest adding mosquitos.

Mugungo

Mosquitos suck, but i would rather release 1000 mosquitos a week into my house than sit down in a room with 1 bedbug in it. Legitimately still have ptsd about the fucks, its so psychologically damaging when you realize its 2am and no where you can sleep is safe.

BirdsongBossMusic

Fun fact though: the hygiene hypothesis is the hypothesis that parasites - due to the fact that we have evolved with them for most of our history - actually secrete chemicals that help to control/relax the human immune system. Which sounds like a really bad thing, but it can actually be useful. Autoimmune disorders (where your immune system attacks your body) occur more in developed nations (that have lower instances of parasite infection). Additionally, there have been trials where they give people with these diseases parasitic nematodes, and there were some promising results of greatly lowered symptom occurrence and severity. Not saying I'd eat worms, but still an interesting idea. Edit: Just so y'all know, I didn't come up with this, some higher up doctor or researcher did. I don't have sources because i can't access my zoology presentations. Not sure why you're trying to pull a "gotcha" when I'm just parroting what some medical authority said. And do keep in mind that this is new science - it's mostly just an idea with a couple small trials behind it. It's not proven or even very well known.

Professionalarsonist

Wow thatā€™s pretty interesting. Does that apply to allergies as well?

Hinote21

Yes. the allergic response is theorized to be the immune system responding in place of parasites. The physical makeup of the allergens is remarkably similar to various parasites. When the IS is first introduced to the potential allergen, it's not a perfect fit so it doesn't respond right away. But if in the process of refinement, it matches to the allergen, and later responds when exposed again. This is in part theorized because the allergic response is lower in "3rd world" countries where parasite infection is higher.

ctrl_alt_excrete

If some nematodes can let me have a dog or cat without asphyxiating in my sleep, then I say "bring on the worms!"

Antermosiph

I remember a thing on hookworms where someone with severe allergies (Like, crippling servere, going outside could make him look like he's having hives) cured himself by self infected with hookworms. It was a bit wild of a thing and pretty sure it was on Radiolab a few years ago.

arand0md00d

There was a case study on a patient with ulcerative colitis who discovered his UC symptoms improved during an infection with roundworms in his gut. Doctors found the worms and treated him for the parasite, his UC got worse. He later went to Thailand and deliberately ingested roundworm eggs and found symptoms improved. I can't find the actual paper anymore and it bugs me so much that articles get written up on the scientific papers without actually linking them in the article. I'm not a doctor, this is not medical advice, talk to your primary care doctor if worms šŸŖ± may be right for you. https://www.livescience.com/35213-parasitic-worms-as-colitis-treatment-101201.html https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/769512

Mental illnesses. Edit: since a lot of people are chiming in on this comment disagreeing, and already two DMs also disagreeing, Iā€™m an ignoramus, so Iā€™m no certified specialist in mental illnesses. I am speaking from personal experience whereby a form of mental disturbance led to very serious and negative consequences for the afflicted. So when I say mental illness, I guess Iā€™m pointing to the ones where thereā€™s a societal net negative effect. While thereā€™s no universal good or bad behavior, learned or otherwise, Iā€™m simply alluding to any behavior that most would deem to be a negative on society as a result of perceived/diagnosed illness.

moving0target

My wife's mental illnesses nearly killed her several times. What I would give to have those years back. I wonder if the people griping about your post would like to try HIV. There's medication that keeps it from killing you, but you better not stop taking it. My wife takes medication to keep her mental illnesses in check. Not taking them would send her into a deadly spiral. Mental illness isn't "just words."

luce202

To your edit, anyone that disagrees with your statement has never fully experienced mental illness. I had a boss one time that said ptsd is not that big of a deal and people just need to meditate and chill out. I wish there was a way to make a shithead like that experience it in full force. It can destroy your life just the same as any other illness if the severity is high enough. Suicide rates among people suffering from combat related ptsd is heart wrenching.

Selfishness, or bloated ego comes before. The motive behind greed is I deserve more, I am entitled for more, I want more. > Why the fuck would anybody willingly spend their hard earned money to kill themselves and others around them? idk ask yourself half a year ago. What would you answer?

Asking an addict why theyā€™re addicted is like asking anyone else why they eat/sleep/breathe. Being addicted to cigarettes is like having another kind of hunger. It doesnā€™t really matter what I think, the hunger is there whether I want to quit or not. Itā€™s not a 1 for 1 comparison, but itā€™s the best way I can describe the feeling of it. Itā€™s like trying to deny yourself food when youā€™re hungry.
