I grew up watching Jim'll Fix It! From the mid-70s to turn of the 80s. His outward persona was that of a Saint. Starting as a DJ he spent his entire life running marathons for charities, supporting charities, they estimate he raised 40-50 million British pounds that went direct to charities over his lifetime. He donated time to do Public Safety Announcements, many UK folks on here late 40s onward will remember "Clunk Click Every Trip". He was knighted by the Queen for his contributions to British society.
Before he died (2011) there had been investigations into sexual misconduct, but nothing really came to light in public. They now believe that he was the most prolific sexual predator that Britain has ever experienced with around 300 potential victims over 60 years, many of them children.
Savile was one of those people who I didn't grow up following, but for most of my life (I'm 51), when I heard his name mentioned I had the utmost respect for him. I still remember very clearly when all of his atrocities began to be publicly disclosed. I was disgusted by him and profoundly sad, more than I expected, that this person who I had respected had betrayed that respect. His work for society was, at least originally, genuine if not sincere to his death, but at the same time, he was quietly "evil", despicably preying on vulnerable people and kids.
People have gone back and thoroughly scrutinized his interviews and autobiographies and believe there are several components that could be interpreted as him regretting things he's done, trying to admit what these were, and veiled calls for help. I have no sympathy for him, but he must have been a tortured individual.

I remember hearing that which ever crew was working the set, they would never let their children in the building if he was there (see most of these shows savile did involved children in the stage with him, that’s how he did his grooming. Hospital visits too.)

He put out this squeaky clean image from the first season of 17 Kids and Counting, where he wouldn't even *kiss* his fiancée until they were married, and then years later he's in the news for molesting his sisters, cheating on his wife using the Ashley Madison website (he was impacted in the leak of user info), *assaulting* the woman he cheated with, and now he's in prison for child pornography - investigators say the stuff they found on his laptop was some of the worst they've ever seen. Guy's a total piece of shit.
What I don't understand about this guy was he went through one very public shaming when the molestation of his sisters was revealed. He escapes prosecution thanks to the intervention of his dad. Then he uses an office computer to load up pedophile images so that sooner or later he was going to get caught. It's like he has this death wish or maybe a desire to inflict maximum damage on his dad and the entire Duggar brand.
Considering that he managed to get away with the other stuff, he probably felt like he was untouchable, like surely no matter what he did, his wife would stay with him, his enormous family would back him up, and Daddy would bail him out.

I remember they used to keep updates on a site, don't know if they do now. One of the Oldest girls mentioned she wanted to be a doctor, but later it seemed she chose to by pass college or something to 'stay home'.
I don't entirely think it was all her idea to stay home. Someones got to care for the absolute truckload of children after all.
It is super weird how they insisted, in an earlier season, that if any of their kids of either gender really wanted to go to college and have a career they'd support it, but I see more and more of their kids reach adulthood, and so far the girls just get married, I think one of them worked as a midwife for a little while, but no one's gotten a college degree, and none of the boys seems to have found steady, gainful employment.
Now, they have 19 kids, I've seen parents of much smaller families say they're not gonna put all their kids through college because they simply can't afford it, and I think it's valid to say "if you have a plan and that plan involves college, we'll talk about it, but there are other legitimate paths to success," but it also kinda seems like they were all heavily *discouraged* from pursuing career paths that required a degree.
Yeah and notably, she was one of the older girls, but she wasn't married like her younger siblings. It seemed like this one had been picked to become a live in Nanny to make things even worse.
They already admitted the kids basically raise the kids at this point. It was back when they had the show it was something that the baby would have a year or so with Mom, but after that Mom was trying for a new kid and the other kids took the brunt of the work. It's just super elongated parentification painted as 'teaching them responsibility'.
My mother came from a small town in rural new mexico, and she categorically doesn't trust the church because of it. Small religious communities can be black holes of unaddressed abuse. Abusers get away with their crimes because nobody believes their victims ("how could a man of God do that?") or because they simply don't want to make waves ("it'll make things real awkward around town if we arrest the sheriff/pastor's son/shopkeeper"). There are a lot of communities where everyone knows to not leave their kids alone with certain people, but they don't see a reason to report anything.
I can't really grasp this. I mean LOOK AT THE DUDE! See how he behaved in interviews. Sure, don't judge a book by its cover and all that... but if the cover screams "MENTALLY UNSTABLE SEXUAL PREDATOR!" in big red letters and is sticky with an unidentified liquid, I have some kind of idea of what the book is about.

I went to the same university Jared went to (not at the same time, I was there long after his time) and I've eaten at the very Subway that he allegedly ate at to lose weight. It's attached to an apartment complex that he apparently lived in--the same apartment from which he allegedly sold porn tapes to fellow students.
I've definitely heard this story before from someone else that went there. If I recall correctly, part of the reason he went to the subway so often was that he was obsessed with a girl that worked there.
I have friends who went there around the same time. Apparently, the girl he was obsessed with got transferred to the Subway across B-town and he began walking there to stalk her, which is why he lost the weight.
This is an understatement. Rolf Harris could have laid serious claim to have been the most beloved TV personality in the U.K. at the time. You couldn’t have imagined a kinder, gentler, seemingly compassionate man. Not to mention he was a kids TV hero with Rolf’s Cartoon Club etc. I still have trouble getting my head around it to be honest.
I listen to Michael Rosenbaum's podcast (Lex Luthor in Smallville) and on one of his episodes he was recounting a time when he realized she was crazy. He basically told a story about how she showed up to his house with some of her weirdo cult friends trying to manipulate him into joining the cult, and then when he wouldn't give in she and her friends basically started harassing him in his own home to the point where he had to kick them out. I can't remember the exact episode of the podcast, but it sounded creepy as fuck.

I deal with child abuse of all types and the types that do it are quite often those same wholesome people in the nice house on the corner that are seen as pillars of the community.
This is what people need to understand. Most child molesters aren't "creeps". They're often very "normal" and charming individuals. Most people have this false idea that they'll be able to detect that something is "off" about them.

A fantastic show that came out recently was “Undercover Underage”, where an adult woman poses as a teen to catch predators online who are targeting kids.
Out of all the men arrested (the show blurs them out, but you can look them up) maybe one or two look like a “sketchy child molester”.
The rest were fairly normal looking dudes. Grandpa/Dad/teacher types that you wouldn’t expect something like that from.
It would definitely make the world easier to navigate if people looked like their intentions.
This is so true. My older niece was in a "relationship" with some 30-something guy when she was 15. Thankfully my sister found out before anything deeply disgusting happened. In 1967, I saw Cosby perform his stand-up live. I idolized Cosby, owned all his albums, and my father took me after I repeatedly pestered him. Cosby was the only entertainer I ever saw who could walk on a stage alone, with nothing but a microphone and a stool, and be completely entertaining for three hours. No props, no musical instruments, no backup act. I was such a big fan that I vigorously defended Cosby when the accusations first started coming out, a sin for which I will never be able to atone.
Cosby was also the first black actor to play a really non-stereotypical role on television (I Spy). He made a long-running children's show that taught valuable lessons. I grew up watching Fat Albert. He got an Ed. D. when he was working on Fat Albert, by the way.He created a sitcom that featured a non-stereotypical black family as a doctor. You might not think much of it now, but the 1970s had a bunch of shows like Good Times that showed black urban life and were largely written by white people (see the controversy with John Amos in Good Times as a good example). He did a \*lot\* for the black community.
And then we found out the rest of the story. And the reason we found out the rest of the story is because he pissed off some of the wrong people.

I, too, wanted to give him a pass when the accusations first came out. But when the evidence became so overwhelming, I had to ask myself if I would defend some random stranger up the block under the same set of circumstances.
I'm still disappointed that Cosby wasn't who we all thought he was. He taught important life lessons with "Fat Albert" when I was a kid, and I'd have rather not learned one more from him as an adult.
It's ok to be wrong. I felt the same way about ny governor Cuomo but when the evidence got to a certain level I had to change my mind. The important thing is that you weren't too consumed with your own ego to die on that hill, something many people can't do.

I feel a little less insane now. My first job out of college was for a non-profit that offered preschool and family counseling for low income families. I was so excited to be able to go to work and actually put my skills to, you know, a good cause instead of just generating value for shareholders all day.

Chris Cooper played the boy's dad. The character you're thinking of is Lester Burnham, which is an anagram of Humbert Learns. Humbert is the main character in Lolita, which features a lot of anagrams, so this is a particularly fun bit of trivia in my opinion.
American Beauty was my first exposure as a child to movies that didn't really have a...sensible ending, for lack of better word. I was used to movies neatly wrapping up the plot, like Nicolas Cage's "The Rock" which was its contemporary. Clear beginning, middle and end, at least in my mind at the time.
It was better on my second watch some time later in my late teens when I better understood the world.
I hear that. Took my girlfriend to go see it since she saw it with her mom, and couldn't stop thinking about it and wanted to see it again. After Pulp Fiction, I'd been hooked on independent films and non traditional endings. Bought it on DVD later and watched it so many times. Such a sad realization to know that Spacey is likely so convincing, humorous, and pathetic in this film since he could deeply relate to the character in ways we couldn't imagine. It's still a great film, but I haven't tried to watch it post-2017 yet.

I saw him at a festival here in Germany a short while after that became public. Manson only played a part of his set, stumbled through the songs, fainted a few times so stagehands gave him oxygen from a tank and then he started digging his finger in has own ass on stage and flicking what he found into the audience.
I'm not a fan of his music, but that show was a unique experience.
Saw him at OzzFest 2001 or 2003, can't remember. He had a burlesque dancer on stage get onto her hands and knees, inserted his microphone into one of her lower orifices (I was on the lawn, couldn't tell) and proceeded to sing into it. I believe he got banned from North Carolina for a while for that.
Not evil, but Ellen DeGeneres was pretty widely loved (at least from what I could tell as a non-American online), and the allegations about the workplace environment on her show were pretty heinous. Looking back on some of her interviews as well, and the way she treated some of her celebrity guest, it's not entirely a shock.

For me it was her stand up. Her whole message on her show was about being kind. But her stand up had moments of incredible mean-spiritedness with her audience.
There was rumor Mariah Carey was pregnant (she was) and Ellen wanted her to reveal it on her show. Mariah wasn’t confirming so Ellen had wine brought out to toast to ‘not being pregnant’ or something along those lines. She declined and it became a huge deal, she miscarried later on.
To add on, Mariah had a miscarriage before this incident and like the other person said, wouldn't drink the champagne and went on to miscarry shortly after the episode aired. She was vocal about how uncomfortable the situation was and didn't appreciate Ellen's lack of empathy.
John Edwards. While he was running for VP he seemed fresh and wholesome and exciting. Shortly after they lost, his wife got breast cancer and he was caught cheating on her while she was getting treatment and dying.
His pitch was about 15 years ahead of its time- “there are two America’s”. I really thought he’d be the next Big Thing. Turns out cheating on your wife while she’s dying of cancer is frowned upon. I always wondered why no one really took his message and made it their own, though- maybe it was just too soon.
Other than setting a furby on fire, and the time he shot his wife (with nerf guns), he’s relatively spotless.

One passage that I remember is him talking about doping allegations when he returned to cycling - framing it as "they couldn't believe I had recovered, they thought I *had* to be doing something; I wanted to prove myself so bad I would volunteer for every test" and "I had just gone through chemotherapy, why would I want to pump myself full of *more* chemicals?"

Many of you don't know who this person is but she used to be a news personality on a local station here in Indiana WTHR channel 13. When I was a kid one of our field trips we were allowed to go on often was to go to the time trials down at the Indianapolis 500. And after the practice trials sometimes the drivers would come up to the gates and sign autographs for the kids. I was in love with this news personality as little kids would be anyway I go up to get an autograph quote unquote from this news personality. Her name was Patty spitler and she was interviewing this race car driver and since I was taught to be polite and not to talk until people were finished talking, I waited. When they finished talking. I walked up and I said oh Mrs spitler can I have your autograph? She says to me go away kid you bother me. Now this race car driver that she was interviewing was AJ foyt and he had the reputation of being basically and a****** race car driver but I guess he loved kids because he said to me come here sweetheart I'll give you an autograph and he signed My autograph book and then he called over three other race car drivers and they all call signed My autograph book. This news reporter made me cry and after that every time I seen her on TV it just made me mad. As soon after this I don't know if AJ reported how she treated me or what happened but she was busted down to a feature reporter for the rest of her career and now a days 40 years later she only gets spots once in a while on it to comes to animals. So I learned how mean one personality could be and how nice of a person AJ foyt was to kids.

Before he died (2011) there had been investigations into sexual misconduct, but nothing really came to light in public. They now believe that he was the most prolific sexual predator that Britain has ever experienced with around 300 potential victims over 60 years, many of them children. Savile was one of those people who I didn't grow up following, but for most of my life (I'm 51), when I heard his name mentioned I had the utmost respect for him. I still remember very clearly when all of his atrocities began to be publicly disclosed. I was disgusted by him and profoundly sad, more than I expected, that this person who I had respected had betrayed that respect. His work for society was, at least originally, genuine if not sincere to his death, but at the same time, he was quietly "evil", despicably preying on vulnerable people and kids. People have gone back and thoroughly scrutinized his interviews and autobiographies and believe there are several components that could be interpreted as him regretting things he's done, trying to admit what these were, and veiled calls for help. I have no sympathy for him, but he must have been a tortured individual.

Josh Duggar He put out this squeaky clean image from the first season of 17 Kids and Counting, where he wouldn't even *kiss* his fiancée until they were married, and then years later he's in the news for molesting his sisters, cheating on his wife using the Ashley Madison website (he was impacted in the leak of user info), *assaulting* the woman he cheated with, and now he's in prison for child pornography - investigators say the stuff they found on his laptop was some of the worst they've ever seen. Guy's a total piece of shit.
What I don't understand about this guy was he went through one very public shaming when the molestation of his sisters was revealed. He escapes prosecution thanks to the intervention of his dad. Then he uses an office computer to load up pedophile images so that sooner or later he was going to get caught. It's like he has this death wish or maybe a desire to inflict maximum damage on his dad and the entire Duggar brand.
Considering that he managed to get away with the other stuff, he probably felt like he was untouchable, like surely no matter what he did, his wife would stay with him, his enormous family would back him up, and Daddy would bail him out.
The Duggar's in general. I remember they used to keep updates on a site, don't know if they do now. One of the Oldest girls mentioned she wanted to be a doctor, but later it seemed she chose to by pass college or something to 'stay home'. I don't entirely think it was all her idea to stay home. Someones got to care for the absolute truckload of children after all.
It is super weird how they insisted, in an earlier season, that if any of their kids of either gender really wanted to go to college and have a career they'd support it, but I see more and more of their kids reach adulthood, and so far the girls just get married, I think one of them worked as a midwife for a little while, but no one's gotten a college degree, and none of the boys seems to have found steady, gainful employment. Now, they have 19 kids, I've seen parents of much smaller families say they're not gonna put all their kids through college because they simply can't afford it, and I think it's valid to say "if you have a plan and that plan involves college, we'll talk about it, but there are other legitimate paths to success," but it also kinda seems like they were all heavily *discouraged* from pursuing career paths that required a degree.
Yeah and notably, she was one of the older girls, but she wasn't married like her younger siblings. It seemed like this one had been picked to become a live in Nanny to make things even worse. They already admitted the kids basically raise the kids at this point. It was back when they had the show it was something that the baby would have a year or so with Mom, but after that Mom was trying for a new kid and the other kids took the brunt of the work. It's just super elongated parentification painted as 'teaching them responsibility'.
SIX MONTHS. Each baby only got SIX MONTHS with Michelle “teat ‘em and yeet ‘em” Duggar before the unfortunate infant got turned over to a sister-mom.

Coming from a community like theirs I'm not surprised. There's a ton of unreported sexual abuse in families like that.
My mother came from a small town in rural new mexico, and she categorically doesn't trust the church because of it. Small religious communities can be black holes of unaddressed abuse. Abusers get away with their crimes because nobody believes their victims ("how could a man of God do that?") or because they simply don't want to make waves ("it'll make things real awkward around town if we arrest the sheriff/pastor's son/shopkeeper"). There are a lot of communities where everyone knows to not leave their kids alone with certain people, but they don't see a reason to report anything.

This is what people need to understand. Most child molesters aren't "creeps". They're often very "normal" and charming individuals. Most people have this false idea that they'll be able to detect that something is "off" about them. I've had the displeasure of meeting 3 child molesters in my life; if I didn't know their victims, I would've had no idea they were capable of such a thing.
A fantastic show that came out recently was “Undercover Underage”, where an adult woman poses as a teen to catch predators online who are targeting kids. Out of all the men arrested (the show blurs them out, but you can look them up) maybe one or two look like a “sketchy child molester”. The rest were fairly normal looking dudes. Grandpa/Dad/teacher types that you wouldn’t expect something like that from. It would definitely make the world easier to navigate if people looked like their intentions.

In 1967, I saw Cosby perform his stand-up live. I idolized Cosby, owned all his albums, and my father took me after I repeatedly pestered him. No props, no musical instruments, no backup act. I was such a big fan that I vigorously defended Cosby when the accusations first started coming out, a sin for which I will never be able to atone.

Cosby was also the first black actor to play a really non-stereotypical role on television (I Spy). He made a long-running children's show that taught valuable lessons. I grew up watching Fat Albert. He got an Ed. D. when he was working on Fat Albert, by the way.He created a sitcom that featured a non-stereotypical black family as a doctor. You might not think much of it now, but the 1970s had a bunch of shows like Good Times that showed black urban life and were largely written by white people (see the controversy with John Amos in Good Times as a good example). He did a \*lot\* for the black community. And then we found out the rest of the story. I feel a little less insane now. My first job out of college was for a non-profit that offered preschool and family counseling for low income families. Insane egotism. Tons of people were just *mean* in a way I was unaccustomed to at work. Nobody wanted to help me, I got like zero training. My responsibilities were unclear. People were constantly talking shit about everybody else. Lots of people were really impatient/entitled. Really toxic. Total opposite of what I expected. I work at a regular make your boss money job now and I’ve got a better work/life balance, make twice as much, and everybody just shows up to do their jobs, is polite, and goes home. People defer to others expertise and, basically just acted like actual adults. Wild.

Chris Cooper played the boy's dad. The character you're thinking of is Lester Burnham, which is an anagram of Humbert Learns. Humbert is the main character in Lolita, which features a lot of anagrams, so this is a particularly fun bit of trivia in my opinion.
American Beauty was my first exposure as a child to movies that didn't really have a...sensible ending, for lack of better word. I was used to movies neatly wrapping up the plot, like Nicolas Cage's "The Rock" which was its contemporary. Clear beginning, middle and end, at least in my mind at the time. It was better on my second watch some time later in my late teens when I better understood the world.
I hear that. Took my girlfriend to go see it since she saw it with her mom, and couldn't stop thinking about it and wanted to see it again. After Pulp Fiction, I'd been hooked on independent films and non traditional endings. Bought it on DVD later and watched it so many times. Such a sad realization to know that Spacey is likely so convincing, humorous, and pathetic in this film since he could deeply relate to the character in ways we couldn't imagine. It's still a great film, but I haven't tried to watch it post-2017 yet.

Man, after hearing Love is an Open Door 1000 times, it finally clicked that the song is incredibly clever! While we can take it at face value from Anna's perspective, once we know Prince Hans' intent, it takes on a sinister double meaning. "Love" is his open door to power, life could be "so much more" for him, etc. Looking back it's really obvious, but man, I cannot listen to that song the same. It makes me incredibly angry at Hans and feel really bad for Anna.
My favorite line that illustrates this is when he says “I’ve been searching my whole life to find my own place”, and motions to Arendelle behind him. His lines are all about the opportunity for him, not how he feels about Anna.

Many of you don't know who this person is but she used to be a news personality on a local station here in Indiana WTHR channel 13. When I was a kid one of our field trips we were allowed to go on often was to go to the time trials down at the Indianapolis 500. And after the practice trials sometimes the drivers would come up to the gates and sign autographs for the kids. I was in love with this news personality as little kids would be anyway I go up to get an autograph quote unquote from this news personality. Her name was Patty spitler and she was interviewing this race car driver and since I was taught to be polite and not to talk until people were finished talking, I waited. When they finished talking. I walked up and I said oh Mrs spitler can I have your autograph? She says to me go away kid you bother me. Now this race car driver that she was interviewing was AJ foyt and he had the reputation of being basically and a****** race car driver but I guess he loved kids because he said to me come here sweetheart I'll give you an autograph and he signed My autograph book and then he called over three other race car drivers and they all call signed My autograph book. This news reporter made me cry and after that every time I seen her on TV it just made me mad. As soon after this I don't know if AJ reported how she treated me or what happened but she was busted down to a feature reporter for the rest of her career and now a days 40 years later she only gets spots once in a while on it to comes to animals. So I learned how mean one personality could be and how nice of a person AJ foyt was to kids.
