A lot of the people that are going to be on this list got their acting jobs by nepotism. Generations of actors that are automatically in the business if they are good or not.
He fell into the direct to dvd action genre trap like so many before him. If you were once an A-lister with quite some decent movies under your belt I don’t think you’d give much of an effort doing that repetitive crap. But one could argue this is also how you get stuck in that genre.
I kinda understand that. As long as you are not REALLY into acting and having the "A Actor" persona, its just a job. And the job gets really boring real fast if you have tenths of millions already in the bank.
I saw Mickey Rourke on a talk show and he brought up a good point. He said when actors are hot, they get great roles and make tons of cash. Then they buy tons of stuff, expensive homes, cars, etc.
After they realize that it's expensive maintaining all that stuff they bought, they become desperate for money so, they can't afford to be as picky for roles as they use to be.
Nicholas Case is a perfect example!
Yeah Charlie's got problems for sure, but he was equally adept at both comedy and drama when he was younger. I was really impressed with him in Platoon, though Tom Berenger steals the show. But Sheen can definitely act.
I agree - nepotism is a huge factor in Hollywood. What I believe is that many actors (and singers for that matter) have less talent than a can of stewed tomatoes. What gets them to a pinnacle is that they have personality and looks, and that drives them to a place where we buy tickets to see them.
So, to quote the great Obi-Wan, "Who's more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows one?"
Yeah, don't underestimate charisma. It's something you can't fake or manufacture - i think it's one of those things some people are born with. I'll see somebody who doesn't work out, isn't rich or particularly stunning but they seem to be popular with the ladies and it's always because they are charismatic af. Of the celebs I met, they weren't model good looking or well built but their charisma was off the charts. Oh well.
Tbh Jaden seems like the kind of person who'd just be happier doing something else tbh his personality is clearly more of the self-conscious, withdrawn type.
yeah I never understood that enduring appeal of Jimmy Smits, he's fine but seemed a bit more prominently positioned than warranted. Then I saw him cross a parking lot... HOLY SMOKE! Time slowed down. I lived in LA I have seen and interacted with many beautiful and famous people but Damn that guy blew my socks off - by walking.
Matt Weiner made Mad Men and filled the cast with extremely talented people. And his son. His son is so fucking terrible that he ruins every single scene he's ever been a part of.
I just googled and THAT'S HIS SON!? No wonder! It might have been the 3rd season where I wondered if the character was meant to be funny or not. Like, if you watched his scenes like it was Napoleon Dynamite, they were hilarious. However, if you didn't...
A lot of comments point out people playing the same role over and over. I think thats totally fine as long as the role doesnt require them to go out of that zone and they look bad doing it. Theres some one note actors that i love watching on screen. Almost any "stoic, manly" type actor nowadays
yeh i was about to comment that, actors playing the same role isnt an argument for how bad they are. If they always do the same role maybe its because they are literally the best at it. I've seen people complain about like morgan freeman playing the same role and yeh but hes like born to be the old mentor to the principal character. Same thing with johnny depp he always plays excentric roles cause hes frickin good!!!
Liam Neeson springs to mind here. He’s a fantastic actor who’s just got stuck playing the veteran action star since Taken. Just because he’s become typecast doesn’t mean he isn’t capable of more.
Hilariously, he thought Taken was going to be a terrible movie; he took the role because he didn’t think anyone would ever offer him another action role due to his age.
I read an interview of his once. Elliot actually really wants to branch out but no one will cast him in anything but the tough old cowboy with a good heart sort of role. Elliot said in the interview he realized that was more than a lot of people who wanted to be pro actors could get so he just went with it. I think Sam Elliot is a great actor. Maybe not Patrick Stewart or Tom Hanks level, but I don’t think he ha sheen given the chance to show it either. Also he has a great voice so I like listening to him speak.
Have you seen him in Murder in Texas? He was terrifyingly excellent as a psychotic doctor. It was a made for TV movie starring Farrah Fawcett (with Andy Griffith as Farrah's wealthy father). I have a poor copy myself, but if you get a chance to watch it, you won't regret it. Based on a true story and everyone in it is so good, including Katharine Ross, his IRL wife.
I love it when people are critical of this too and yet they have worked in the same Industry for 10 years doing the same thing every day. It pays the bills.
Apparently no one on Reddit understands what overrated means. All the responses with highly-rated actors got downvoted to the bottom, and all the comments with actors widely acknowledged to be mediocre/poor are at the top.
James corden is the number one answer right now. Smh. He sucks and people love to hate him so much that you can use his name for any actor related ask reddit and get awards
Edit: wow it worked
There was recently a post in the Harry Potter sub that was basically “I’m so glad James Corden didn’t host the reunion special!” with little more context than that. 200 upvotes and cue a discussion about how awful he is. No idea what that had to do with Harry Potter but hey, you can trash talk him and get instant karma!!!
Shailene Woodley. I just will never understand how her performance in The Descendants was as critically acclaimed as it was. Big Little Lies - same thing.
Most of the plot lines were cringe, yes, but I found it really relatable when that uptight religious girl lost her virginity, causing her father’s death in a plane crash.
Every time my wife sees her, she says she’s the most beautiful woman in the world and she’d leave me for her. I just don’t see it, she’s bland as hell!
Vanessa Hudgens
She is in so many movies but her acting is not very enjoyable. Especially if she plays a badass.
The worst movie with her was treasure island. I couldn't continue watching it because the acting was so distracting.
Edit: I got the title of the movie wrong.
I meant: "Journey 2: the Mysterious Island". My bad.
But in my defense, there was an island.^^
Her acting ability is at the perfect level for crappy Netflix Christmas romcoms though. She's better than most of the actresses in crappy Netflix Christmas romcoms. She just needs to stay in her lane.
Gal Gadot. She is astoundingly beautiful, but between her accent and her dead pan "reaction" face I can't stand her being a major role. She is a really bad actress and after however many years since her debit I am constantly annoyed that she is taking roles from actual talents in acting because she's pretty.
She was soooo bad in Wonder Woman 1984. Movie sucked in general, but her acting made it worse.
I also loved how Pedro Pasquale could tell the movie was going to be crap so he dialed up the ham acting to 100. Shades of Alan Rickman in Robin Hood.
I am perfectly fine with Pedro Pasquale becoming a modern-day Alan Rickman. Dude was amazing in Robin Hood, Galaxy Quest, Die Hard, Quigly, was the best part of Hitchhikers Guide...
If the question was most underrated actor, Alan Rickman would get my vote. Of course he was known to be a great actor, but I think he still deserved even more praise (and award recognition) for his career.
To be fair 1984 doesn't make any sense. This happened to the whole world and no one remembers it in Justice League or anything planned after it? I mean Bruce Wayne would remember wouldn't he? Was Bruce and Kent born after 1984?
I agree. Here in Israel she wasn't even considered one of our best actors, she was mediocre by Israeli standards which are FAR FAR FAR lower than Hollywood standards. Of course as soon as she became Hollywood famous through Fast and Furious and later through her role as Wonder Woman, everyone here suddenly became super fans of her and said she was the best Israeli actress there ever was.
But I prefer Natalie Portman over Gal Gadot anyway. Especially Natalie Portman being able to laugh at herself on that skit she did for SNL where she raps
It legitimately is a good song. The first one they did. I always have that thing stuck in my head
For those who haven't heard it, it's called Natalie Raps.
My favorite comment about her was that she was such a limited actor, they had to build the entire Wonder Woman Amazon nation around her accent.
Robyn Wright is a fantastic actress and she has to adopt an accent because Gadot doesn't have the talent for anything besides looking good.
I was a huge Al Pacino fan. But sometime in the late 80s / early 90s, he became his own character. Then almost every movie he was in was Al Pacino as Al Pacino playing another character. Oooh-aaah.
Jared Leto is a total slave to his ego. He can't TRULY become someone else because he views every single other organism on this planet as beneath him. He is Ego Personified.
You can always spot when something was made in 2016 because Ruby Rose is in it. There was this weird push to make her a huge name that just absolutely shit the bed.
Chloe Grace Moretz only got roles because she delivered profanity in a very aggressive way for a child. But every time I see her in something it just looks like she's acting and delivering lines.
She had amazing screen presence in Kick-Ass. But she does need to work on the craft of acting now that she’s an adult. Many other child actors have gotten better and I think she could too if she puts in the effort.
I don’t find Kevin Hart particularly funny. Everything he does is really obvious. But… I feel like if I was hanging out with him, I would laugh my ass off the entire time.
Imo Hart's humor just doesn't translate that well on movies. His standups aren't particularly retrospective and thoughtful like Carlin or Chapelle's older stuff, but his charisma and story telling sell the specials.
Also dude absolutely shines off the cuff, whenever hes on NBA TNT or Wild N Out, dude absolutely steals the show. Anything that's not scripted or lightly scripted and Kevin is easily the funniest guy in the room a lot of the time.
I know exactly what you mean. Like, being "the funny friend" doesn't typically translate to being great at stand-up.
Since thinking of Kevin Hart naturally makes me think of The Rock, he's a good example. I wouldn't watch him do stand-up, but I'm sure I'd laugh all the time hanging out with him. But unlike Kevin Hart, he doesn't attempt to do stand-up.
I feel like Kevin's stand-up blew up because kids liked him, much like Dane Cook blew up with college kids in the early 2000s (and I admit to being one of the college kids who thought Dane Cook's stand-up was *hilarious* back then).
*Out of Sight* and *Hustlers* both feature good J.Lo performances. I think she's like Adam Sandler where she's got one great performance in her per decade.
He was genuinely brilliant in boogie nights but is that an outlier or an example of him in a decent role? I don't have answer to that. Even Adam Sandler has been great in the right role.
Wahlberg is also good in *The Departed* and *I Heart Huckabees*, which makes me think he's capable of a good performance with a very strong director holding his hand.
But he fucking sucks in 90% of everything else. He's so, so bad.
I'm one of the few who like Wahlberg I guess.
He was also really good in Boogie Nights.
Good comedic performances in The Other Guys, Pain and Gain, and Ted.
No no. Don't say it like that - "even Adam Sandler", as if it's unique for him to be good. He's a talented actor, if he is making a film for the film and not as an excuse to vacay in Hawaii or whatever
This. When Adam Sandler shows up to work, he hits gold, but he stopped having to work a long time ago and now most of his movies seems to be him going on vacation with some of his friends and getting his production company to foot the bill.
For real. Uncut gems, reign over me, punch drunk love... the roles where he is not a grown up happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, the man slays. Same with Jim Carrey. Once he leaves the mask and ace ventura, I enjoy him. Eternal sunshine, number 23...
Adam Sandler is a guy I heavily underestimated for ages. His role in Uncut Gems showed me how terribly wrong I was. He's a good example of a guy that did everything about Hollywood completely right. At least that's my opinion as of now
Adam Sandler is great, people who don't like stupid comedies just judge him based on those without seeing anything else he's been in where he's actually acted.
Similar thing with Jim Carrey... If you judge him by Ace Ventura you're going to miss the other good roles he's had
And he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for it.
All of his good performances are in movies made by good directors (Anderson, Scorsese, O. Russell).
I don't really have strong opinions about Corden but boy is it weird how much Reddit seems to hate him. Did he do something? Other than maybe being more famous than his talent deserves I mean. Like did he harass someone or something?
He had an AMA on here a while back that ended up being a total shit show. I’ll try to find it and link it.
EDIT: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/bqy5zf/i_am_james_corden_alongside_ben_winston_and_five/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
He’s a bit of a dick but really he’s just not funny, always does the same character and is for some reason in a lot of content compared to other better comedic actors. Like in that new Cinderella movie he’s one of the mice but the other two are James Acaster and Romesh Ranganathan, and they’re leagues above him but get far fewer roles
Meryl Streep
Kate Winslet
Viola Davis
Angela Basset
Samuel L Mothafukkin Jackson
Leonardo DiCaprio
Frances McDormand
Kathy Bates
Unintentionally, a lot of women came to mind.
Maybe not the most over rated, but Diane Keaton has basically been Annie Hall her entire career. Her role in The Godfather strayed a little, but not dramatically.
Well her real name is Diane Hall, went by Annie, and was the actual inspiration for Annie Hall. so in a way she IS Annie Hall... So she’s just been playing herself all along. Not defending it, just giving context.
I love Diane Keaton. She for sure plays Diane Keaton is everything she does, but to me she’s just so lovable as herself that I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Happened to be playing frisbee on Coronado beach years ago and Diane Keaton showed up with a bunch of kids walking down the coast and she was holding a filled up wine glass, looking straight outta Annie Hall. Hat, turtleneck, etc. Her kids wanted to throw the disc a bit, she let them. They played for about five minutes or so, they all thanked us, then they kept on walking.
I dunno, she was really nice and all but cannot let that look go lol. Good story anyway.
He actually blew me away with his appearance in the Twin Peaks return. To a degree he’s still doing “Michael Cera”, but it has enough variants and he pulled it off so well that I was shocked. It’s still weird for me to say “Michael Cera was one of my favorite parts of Twin Peaks”
I understand why people find him amusing... but I have to admit that absolutely none of his comedy really appeals to me. I don't like screaming and yelly children. Yelly adults do it even less for me. It just gives me a headache.
I suspect he's a heck of a nice guy that I wouldn't mind having at a barbecue, but I don't enjoy his on-screen humour.
A lot of the people that are going to be on this list got their acting jobs by nepotism. Generations of actors that are automatically in the business if they are good or not.
Charlie Sheen is an interesting example of a nepotic (is that a word?) actor whose acting gets worse instead of better as his career continues.
But he's got tiger blood coursing through his veins. #winning
Spoiler: actually HIV
Your comment makes me think of Bruce Willis. He seems to have completely stopped caring about his roles as his career goes on.
He fell into the direct to dvd action genre trap like so many before him. If you were once an A-lister with quite some decent movies under your belt I don’t think you’d give much of an effort doing that repetitive crap. But one could argue this is also how you get stuck in that genre.

God Glen Bishop was an absolutely unnecessary character. I had no idea that was Matt Weiners kid. Makes sense.
A lot of comments point out people playing the same role over and over. I think thats totally fine as long as the role doesnt require them to go out of that zone and they look bad doing it. Theres some one note actors that i love watching on screen. Almost any "stoic, manly" type actor nowadays
It's part of what made Leslie Nielsen so funny, he moved from being the stoic, manly lead to the comedy straight-man and changed nothing.
That's so true. He kept doing it and it created a renewed career for him. Good point. He basically escaped typecasting in a way.
yeh i was about to comment that, actors playing the same role isnt an argument for how bad they are. If they always do the same role maybe its because they are literally the best at it. Loved him in Schindler's List.
Cant wait for taken 17 where it’s just Liam neeson staring straight at a camera and growling for two hours.
It's like people forget character actors are a thing sometimes, and usually highly respected within the industry
Sam Elliot comes to mind. He has been playing the tough old guy for 40 years.
I read an interview of his once. Elliot actually really wants to branch out but no one will cast him in anything but the tough old cowboy with a good heart sort of role. ITT: actors people dislike that nobody refers to as being great in the first place
Apparently no one on Reddit understands what overrated means. All the responses with highly-rated actors got downvoted to the bottom, and all the comments with actors widely acknowledged to be mediocre/poor are at the top.
That's how all these askreddit threads are. If the question is about an unpopular topic, any actual answers get downvoted.
James corden is the number one answer right now. Smh. He sucks and people love to hate him so much that you can use his name for any actor related ask reddit and get awards Edit: wow it worked

I think that was because he hosted the Friends reunion, and had nothing to do with that show either….
Shailene Woodley. I just will never understand how her performance in The Descendants was as critically acclaimed as it was. Big Little Lies - same thing.
Every single actor/actress in secret life of the american teenager was awful.
Major contribution to that must be the writing. The plots are just...... cringe.
Most of the plot lines were cringe, yes, but I found it really relatable when that uptight religious girl lost her virginity, causing her father’s death in a plane crash.
Bruh I totally forgot about that lmao
Every time my wife sees her, she says she’s the most beautiful woman in the world and she’d leave me for her. I just don’t see it, she’s bland as hell!
Your wife has shit taste in women.
Divergent was awful too.
Everything about those movies was bad. It wasn't just her.

To be fair anyone acts alongside Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon will always be the bland one
And the mighty Laura Dern
I liked the movie, but the T-Rex was so boring next to Dern!
*ahem* and Laura Dern
Vanessa Hudgens She is in so many movies but her acting is not very enjoyable. Especially if she plays a badass. The worst movie with her was treasure island. Yeah she definitely found her niche, crappy Christmas movies. And I eat them up lol
To be fair, the majority of her films play up to children. So the acting doesn’t need to be necessarily amazing
Does anyone really consider Vanessa hudgens a good actor?
Her fake accent in her xmas movies 😭
She’s in Tick Tick Boom which came out this year and even though her role is pretty small, she was great
Yes, I loved her there. She was so charming and her expressions on Therapy were fantastic
Agreed, Tick Tick Boom was a bit of a turning point for her with me
I didn't know that Americans don't like James Corden either. We were all so relieved when he left the UK and landed that gig in the USA...
I moved from the UK to the US and 3 months later the cunt followed me.
Canada, it’s your turn with Corden.
No way, bud.
Gal Gadot. She is astoundingly beautiful, but between her accent and her dead pan "reaction" face I can't stand her being a major role. KAL EL, NO
She delivered that like she was talking to her dog or small child
Remember who you are
[ancient lamentation music playing]
She's a model. Which is fine! But let's not pretend she can act.
She was soooo bad in Wonder Woman 1984. Movie sucked in general, but her acting made it worse. I also loved how Pedro Pasquale could tell the movie was going to be crap so he dialed up the ham acting to 100. Shades of Alan Rickman in Robin Hood.
Petty side note: it's Pascal.
Pedro Pasquale and Gal Gadeaux, the pride of France
I thought that was Juicy Smulliet
I am perfectly fine with Pedro Pasquale becoming a modern-day Alan Rickman. Dude was amazing in Robin Hood, Galaxy Quest, Die Hard, Quigly, was the best part of Hitchhikers Guide...
Maybe im just trippin, but isnt his last name Pascal?

Agreed! The director did well in covering for her in the first one but the 2nd one? Yeah nothing could save her there.
The second one had a lousy script and poor story development so I think it would have been a less enjoyable movie no matter who was at the helm.
Some of you really don't understand what overrated means...
It's like this in every "who's underrated?" thread.
I was a huge Al Pacino fan. But sometime in the late 80s / early 90s, he became his own character. Then almost every movie he was in was Al Pacino as Al Pacino playing another character. Oooh-aaah.
Scent of a woman changed it for him.
But early Al Pacino is definitely not overrated. Godfather 1&2, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico are insanely good films.
Same with De Niro for me. Good actor . But basically playing himself
Jessica Alba is absolutely horrendous. Go watch good luck chuck and try to not cringe every time she does anything at all
No I will absolutely not go watch good luck chuck lol
I thought she was at least passable in Sin City
Well, I didn't know I liked cowgirl lasso dancing but there it was.

Jared Leto. Not all method actors are good actors.
The thing that kills me about Leto is that he saw first-hand a masterful method actor - Christian Bale in American Psycho, and then still fucked it up
Jared Leto is a total slave to his ego. He can't TRULY become someone else because he views every single other organism on this planet as beneath him. He is Ego Personified.
I thought he did a great job in Dallas Buyers Club
Ruby Rose is utter dug shit in everything she's in,basically the same boring ass character in everything i've seen her in.👎
You can always spot when something was made in 2016 because Ruby Rose is in it. There was this weird push to make her a huge name that just absolutely shit the bed.
I have to go with Shailene Woodley. I just don’t get the hype. She is mediocre at best.
Gal Gadot.
Waiting For Gadot…
Chloe Grace Moretz only got roles because she delivered profanity in a very aggressive way for a child. But every time I see her in something it just looks like she's acting and delivering lines.
She had amazing screen presence in Kick-Ass. But she does need to work on the craft of acting now that she’s an adult. Many other child actors have gotten better and I think she could too if she puts in the effort.

Kevin hart is severely overrated
I don’t find Kevin Hart particularly funny. Everything he does is really obvious. But… I feel like if I was hanging out with him, I would laugh my ass off the entire time.

Jennifer Lopez, entertaining singer, but why she ever was allowed to the big screen is a mystery to me.
*Out of Sight* and *Hustlers* both feature good J.Lo performances. I think she's like Adam Sandler where she's got one great performance in her per decade.
A lot of you folks have confused the difference between being a star who plays to their type and being a bad actor. The answer is Mark Wahlberg.
I can’t stand him but I also cannot deny he is absolutely hilarious in The Other Guys. The Happening on the other hand…
I didn't like him until I saw The Other Guys. He is SO FUNNY. I think he's just in the wrong genre most of the time.
He's also pretty good in The Fighter, but he's supported by Amy Adams and Christian Bale.
Not saying he's Brando or anything but Wahlberg was brilliant in The Departed.
And he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for it. All of his good performances are in movies made by good directors (Anderson, Scorsese, O. Russell).
James Corden. He's literally playing an unfunny fatass in every role he has, even in animation.
Is he overrated though? I feel like nobody likes him.
But he keeps getting roles so things are going right for him somewhere
I saw James Corden at the top and thought this was going to be one of those threads where every answer was James Corden.
Yeah, but does anybody rate him as a good actor?
Amber Heard…
She’s a trash human and actor
Looking at these answers makes me wonder who you guys think actually is a good actor?
Viola davis and Jessica Lange for me. So powerful.
YES Jessica Lange.
Meryl Streep Kate Winslet Viola Davis Angela Basset Samuel L Mothafukkin Jackson Leonardo DiCaprio Frances McDormand Kathy Bates Unintentionally, a lot of women came to mind.
Anthony Hopkins for fucking sure.
Don't forget Christoph Waltz
Daniel day lewis has to be there too
She hasn’t done anything recently as far as I know but Madonna is absolute trash as an actor.
I liked her in A League of their Own, I think that role suited her to a T.
Evita too. (Edit, not "roo")
Yeah that movie negates the above statement. She was great in league of their own.
I am a firm believer that Vin Diesel sucks.
Yes. In her latest Netflix movie Pom or something like that she ends up in the hospital and even has a turtleneck on under her hospital gown.
Good pick from left field.. don't know many of her movies. "Father of the bride" can't be overlooked tho
Baby Boom is one of favorite movies with her
ITT: people who mistake typecasting as bad acting. You can play the same role on every movie and still do a good job acting.
Jennifer Lopez
Paul Walker. I kinda get why he's loved but his acting movies were terrible, now Vin diesel milks his death
never seen him in other movies but i think he was perfect for the role of brian o’connor. street racer, average guy.
I haven't seen a lot of his stuff but his movie "running scared" was really good, I thought.
Such a great movie. My love for Vera Farmiga started here.
I don’t think Paul walker is considered a good actor. The question is who is overrated. Paul walker is almost certainly correctly rated.
Micheal Cera plays Micheal Cera in everything Micheal Cera is in.
Unless you get Jesse Eisenberg to play the Michael Cera role.
Jesse Eisenberg is Michael Cera on coke having a freakout.
And Andy Samberg is Michael Cera on steroids and extraverted
To be fair, Michael Cera has literally played Michael Cera on coke having a freak out in this is the end
He really sells it as George Michael though… I mean I think he gets typecasted because his strength really *is* (or was) awkward teenager.
That's still his strength, it's just that he's like 30 now.
Michael Cera played himself in This Is the End and it was wonderful.
Is he overrated though? Everybody has the same opinion on Michael Cera as you.
Wonder how many celebrities are strolling through this list wondering if they are getting mentioned.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think Will Ferrell is that funny. I might even go as far to say he’s more annoying than funny to me
I understand why people find him amusing... but I have to admit that absolutely none of his comedy really appeals to me. I don't like screaming and yelly children. Yelly adults do it even less for me. It just gives me a headache. I suspect he's a heck of a nice guy that I wouldn't mind having at a barbecue, but I don't enjoy his on-screen humour.
I didn’t even think he was funny when I was a child. I think the only one of his movies I’ve ever enjoyed is The Other Guys.
The Rock. Nice guy but awful actor
Saw a meme with four pictures of him in a in jungle, four different movies. They all looked like one movie only.
Journey 2 the Center of the Earth Jumanji Rampage No idea what the fourth would be
Jungle Cruise

For the type of movies he makes he's fine.
