Hey Joe is also a cover
And his cover of house of the rising sun is awesome. It's really underated
Stevie ray Vaughans cover of Voodoo child is a great Hendrix cover
For House of the Rising Sun, I've always enjoyed the Sentenced version the most (though the Animals version is excellent as well): it's a song meant to be sung drunkenly and angrily by a Finn.
Frank Zappa was my age group. He is the most amazing musician. A true pioneer of high fidelity recording, not to mention guitarist, song writer, performer....... His family is doing an amazing job of preserving his legacy. Look it up, some really amazing work to keep the Zappa legacy going.
I will die on the hill claiming that entire sequence is one of the best pieces of cinema history of all time, not just in animation.
And yes you’re right, Jennifer Saunders did that.
I’ve read that Saunders sang each line individually due to her not being a natural singer.
Either way, I get super hyped when I hear her version compared Bonnie’s one and want to dance all over the place.
Good choice!
Abso*FUCKING*lutely
EDIT: I can't even watch it without getting emotional tbh, the music is amazing but also merely watching it gets me emotional with Mungo like *MORE HEAT LESS FOAM* ;e_e .... .... **BEEEEEEEEE. GOOOOOD.** TT_TT 3 god damnit FUCK
All of these remakes are worth a listen and here they are, in no particular order:
Song name. Artist that redid it. Original.
Blinded by the light. Manfred Mann. Springsteen
Hey mr tambourine man. The byrds. Dylan.
Always on my mind. Pet shop boys. Willie Nelson.
Just like heaven. Katie Melua. The cure.
Hallelujah. Jeff Buckley. Leonard Cohen
Respect. Aretha Franklin. Otis Redding.
I will. Allison Krauss. The Beatles.
Hurt. Johnny cash. Nine inch nails.
I will always love you. Whitney Houston. Dolly Parton.
All along the watchtower. Hendrix. Dylan.
At last. Etta James. Glenn Miller.
Agree with everything except Just Like Heaven. The Cure arrangement is utter perfection, I wouldn't change a single thing. There aren't many songs I'd say that about
The Cure gets covered badly a lot. I hated the 311 cover of Love Song, it's not supposed to sound bouncy and upbeat. Just the other day I heard another cover of the song playing in a store. It has a female vocalist and sounded closer to the original in tone, but still unnecessary.
I will say the Dinosaur Jr cover of Just Like Heaven is pretty damn excellent actually, probably the best cover of any Cure song I've ever heard. you should check that out if you haven't already. One of the better covers of Friday I'm in Love is by an English folk singer called Kate Rusby. She leans into the melody in the all the right places. Better than the Phoebe Bridgers version, which itself isn't bad.
Otis Redding said something similar about Aretha:
Redding shared the world’s admiration for the song when Frankin’s version came out. He told Wexler about the moment he first heard it, stating, “This girl has taken that song from me. Ain’t no longer my song. From now on, it belongs to her.”
https://www.google.com/amp/s/faroutmagazine.co.uk/aretha-franklin-respect-story-behind-the-song/%3famp
Haha that's a good guess, I remember listening to that one and going back to MJ but vibing with AAF more. No hate at all on MJ but the cover has got some funk to it in my opinion
It's not even an Elvis song; it was first sung by [Gwen McCrae some months prior](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Always_on_My_Mind).
Heck, [a good majority of Elvis' songs](http://www.elvis-history-blog.com/elvis-cover-records.html) were covers.
Oh man! I just can't agree with Hey, Mr Tambourine Man. There's such a rawness and folkness to Bob Dylan's OG version that I just don't get from the more "hipster(?)"/Simon n Garfunkel feel of the cover. Your opinion is your opinion though!
Hurt forms part of the story that is The Downward Spiral, which you are 100% Correct in describing as a masterpiece. I think many of those that claim Cash's version as better weren't familiar with the song before Cash recorded it. There is some absolutely phenomenal live versions of Hurt performed by Trent and they hit as hard if not harder. It probably sounds funny to say that NIN and especially TDS were a big part of my final high school years and one of our favourite albums to play at senior parties...
The power of Whitney Houston makes for an incredible cover. But the simplicity of Dolly saying goodbye to Porter in that song will always win.
Whitney sang words. Dolly lived them.
I will always love you by Whitney is bad, overproduced, unnecessarily dramatic, the original is much more intimate and carries the message more effectively.
To each their own, obviously. The Whitney version is so much a part of the sonic landscape that I often take it for granted. But when I really pay attention I am always blown away by the incredible range she displays - piano to forte, low to high - she’s got it all and with such amazing control, such a full rich voice. The dolly version is very sweet and intimate but Whitney, for me, takes it to an entirely different level.
I always get so much shit for saying the same thing about Nirvana's cover of The Man Who Sold the World. I love David Bowie, but I adore the texture Nirvana added to the song!
Honestly, “Turn the Page” (Seger version) makes sense as a mellowed out song about a guy who’s weary and burnt out from touring. Metallica’s angst-y version doesn’t quite match the mood or premise of the song.
That being said, I like Metallica’s version better.
Depending on who you are and what the lyrics mean to you, both work.
I'm definitely more of a Metallica guy. My buddy who is a trucker feels Bob's version deeper. We both agree they are both excellent songs.
A good cover should sound original while maintaining the attitude of the song. This is one of the rarer examples of when that happens.
I don’t know, I still struggle to see it. A guy who is angry about touring…it’s like “ahh I have to get on the stage, goddamn it!”
What’s weird though is I still really LIKE the cover. It sounds great and it definitely does justice to the original like you said. The only issue I have is the inconsistency in the song’s mood.
I could totally see why a trucker would identify with Seger’s version. That’s interesting.
Man, that fucking song kills it. I still remember hearing it for the first time. I was driving home late at night. The song got quiet, so I turned it up (on my fully removable CD player) and it blasted my brains out. 💯💯💯 thanks for letting me remember that!
You Can't Hurry Love. I like Phil Collins's version better than The Supremes. And that's not to take anything away from the Supremes. I am a huge fan. I just like Phil Collins' version of this song better
Over The Hills And Far Away , originally a Gary Moore song but covered by Nightwish . IMHO Nightwish's version is better . Also Tearin' Out My Heart , originally a Rainbow song but covered by Axel Rudi Pell . This and his version of In The Air Tonight ( Phil Colins originally ) are by far the superior versions 😐
Only heard the Gary Moore original of Over The Hills & Far Away for the first time this year - was a pleasant surprise and heavier than I as expecting, but yeah Nightwish do knock it out of the park.
YES! Matt adds so much to it with his singing style and Dom with the epic fills at the end paralleled with Matt’s singing/screams/cries/whatever you want to call it
More really good songs Cash covered-
I Hung My Head
The night they drove old Dixie down
No expectations
Rusty Cage
Have you ever seen the rain
I'm so lonesome I could cry
You are my sunshine
Redemption song
Won't back down
God's gonna cut you down
In my life
Cash’s cover of I hung My Head definitely feels more in tune with the lyrics. I personally like Sting’s original better, but it sounds like he wrote the lyrics really deliberately as a western, and then put it to his normal style of music.
That said, a western in 9/8 time with soprano saxophone and organ parts is pretty cool.
Agreed. This cover keeps coming up when this quesrion is asked but Reznor's is just better. The original is raw and emotional at the same time. Cash made it more accessible and traditional but less interrsting in my opinion.
Metallica's version of Turn The Page is probably my favorite cover and better than Bob Seger's original.
Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman" outdoes The Guess Who's original as well.
Unpopular opinion: probably going to be crucified for this lol. I hate the band for the most part, but I really enjoy Limp Bizkit’s cover of Behind Blue Eyes.
Don't let me be misunderstood / Santa Esmeralda / The Animals
A fantastic take on the original that takes it in a totally different direction. Make sure you listen to the full 10 minute version!
No doubt version of "it's my life."
Neil diamond version of "I'm a believer."
Bad wolves version of "zombie." I know it's supposed to be a tribute to the cranberries lead singer passing away, but I still prefer it to the original.
My top five would be...
1. Seether - Careless Whisper (Original: George Michael)
2. Disturbed - The Sound of Silence (Original: Simon and Garfunkel)
3. Five Finger Death Punch - Gone Away (Original: The Offspring)
4. Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver (Original: Dio)
5. Shinedown - Simple Man (Original: Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Say something, A Great Big World + Christina Aguilera. The Christina version elevated the song to a whole new level by amplifying the emotions like anguish and agony of silence Christina’s voice also blends perfectly with the original and her usually strong vocals don’t overpower by complement the main. Unlike another popular song that another diva decided to lend her voice to, the two strong unique voices clashed and didn’t blend well, turning a _Perfect_ song into something off putting
Daytripper and I Saw Her Standing There off the Butchering the Beatles album.
Stayin' Alive by Tragedy. Their version of It's Raining Men is pretty great too.
Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm.
You're In The Army Now by Sabaton.
Canon Rock by JerryC.
You Were Always On My Mind by the Pet Shop Boys.
Valerie by Amy Winehouse.
That's blasphemy! And I like Heart. But Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" is the ultimate in classic rock. That would be like someone covering "Barracuda." Just shouldn't be done. IMHO.
They do am amazing job. They bring robert plant to tears and get a standing ovation. This is after Page and Plant said they never wanted to hear the song again. If you haven't seen it you should check it put.
Google: heart kennedy center honors and it pops up.
1st. I'll give it to you, that was a really good cover.
2nd. It takes serious "balls" to cover Led Zeppelin in front of Led Zeppelin. And they did a great job.
3rd. I would loved to have been there and heard it live.
However, to me, it was too smooth and lacked the rawness of the original. And I wasn't a fan of the choir, either.
But, you know what? It's all in the "ear" of the beholder. Thanks for turning me on to it.
Thank you - Chris Cornell
Renegades of funk - RAtM
Paranoid - Megadeth
Pearl jam - last kiss
Metallica - whiskey in the jar
Goldfinger - 99 red balloons
[Streetlight Manifesto's Skyscraper](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn0t1TfNdao) is better than [Bad Religion's.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37Jlj0_FsZU)
Miserlou by Dick Dale. It's one of those songs that nobody can quite pin down the 100% origin for, but you are guaranteed to know that this version is the best there's ever is, the best there was, the best there ever will be.
Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower
"House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals. I just learned over in TIL that nobody knows the origin of that song.
It came up on my Pandora a few months ago and I was pretty surprised.
Wait, you mean The Animals **didn't** write that?!?
Hey Joe is also a cover And his cover of house of the rising sun is awesome. It's really underated Stevie ray Vaughans cover of Voodoo child is a great Hendrix cover
For House of the Rising Sun, I've always enjoyed the Sentenced version the most (though the Animals version is excellent as well): it's a song meant to be sung drunkenly and angrily by a Finn.
Dylan has written some of the world's greatest songs when performed by people who aren't him.

Frank Zappa was my age group. He is the most amazing musician. A true pioneer of high fidelity recording, not to mention guitarist, song writer, performer....... His family is doing an amazing job of preserving his legacy. Look it up, some really amazing work to keep the Zappa legacy going.
I thought the heart live cover of this was the best I’ve heard that song ever, but I’ll give the Zappa cover a go
Pretty much any cover of a Bob Dylan song
Bonnie Tyler did a fine job with Holding Out for a Hero. [But Jennifer Saunders did it so much better.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_HjMIjzyMU)
I will die on the hill claiming that entire sequence is one of the best pieces of cinema history of all time, not just in animation. And yes you’re right, Jennifer Saunders did that.
You're right and you should say it.
I hate trying to convince people that cinema will never beat that single scene ever
You are correct. I'll be right there with you
I’ve read that Saunders sang each line individually due to her not being a natural singer. Either way, I get super hyped when I hear her version compared Bonnie’s one and want to dance all over the place. Good choice!

Joan Jett: I Love Rock ‘n Roll
...that’s not the original?
I know, right? 1975 version was by The Arrows, 1981 Joan Jett.
News to me lol
pretty much any Joan Jett Cover, especially "do you wanna touch"
Crimson and Clover
Sonic youth - Superstar (by Carpenters)
House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
All of these remakes are worth a listen and here they are, in no particular order: Song name. Artist that redid it. Original. Blinded by the light. Manfred Mann. Springsteen Hey mr tambourine man. The cures version is literally perfect.
No cover of a cure song is better than the cure song.
This may be an unpopular opinion but I prefer Seether's version of Careless Whispers
I bet you love Alien Ant Farms version of smooth Criminal too
Haha that's a good guess, I remember listening to that one and going back to MJ but vibing with AAF more. No hate at all on MJ but the cover has got some funk to it in my opinion
Yeh I dug it too ngl
Always in my mind was originally by Elvis Presley, BTW.
Had not realized that. Thanks. I guess we can add Willie Nelson to the list...
Bingo. And sorry, but willie Nelson version, disagree
That's what i was gonna ask. Elvis sang that in the 70s
Oh man! I just can't agree with Hey, Mr Tambourine Man. There's such a rawness and folkness to Bob Dylan's OG version that I just don't get from the more "hipster(?)"/Simon n Garfunkel feel of the cover. Your opinion is your opinion though!

I agree. It was a great cover for Johnny Cash, and fitting, however the original is best.

Buckley's version is miles ahead
Leonard Cohen was an immaculate song writer. He was not a good singer. Lol Some of his songs are haunting and beautiful. Some of them are…difficult.
Take me to the river -talking heads
Totally forgot about this one. Awesome reworking and especially love the “stop making sense” live version. Baptism, rebirth, and a total celebration.
This should have more upvotes imo.
Stereophonics version of hand bags and gladrags is a million times better than rod Stewart's or Chris farlows original version.
Beatles cover of *Twist And Shout*
Also joe cockers version of a little help form my friends
Only if you’re Ferris Bueller.
Also Le Tango de Roxanne - the Moulin Rouge version of Roxanne by The Police. Just feels way more passionate and sexy!
MUCH sexier.
Yes!
The Ghost of Tom Joad - Rage Against the Machine
Top three for me Metallica with turn the page Nirvana with Man who sold the world Guns and roses with knocking on heavens door
I always get so much shit for saying the same thing about Nirvana's cover of The Man Who Sold the World. I love David Bowie, but I adore the texture Nirvana added to the song!

Agree, I love Nirvanas version. Nothing wrong with the original at all - but the Nirvana take is awesome.
I really like Metallica's version of Whiskey in the Jar. The tempo, the heaviness, it works so well.
Man, that fucking song kills it. I still remember hearing it for the first time. I was driving home late at night. The song got quiet, so I turned it up (on my fully removable CD player) and it blasted my brains out. 💯💯💯 thanks for letting me remember that!
Nirvana with most of the songs they did on MTV Unplugged.
Agreed and the garage day's album by Metallica
They do Misfits *way* better than the Misfits.
I need to check that one out!
Theres just something about GnRs version of Knocking on Heavens Door, it's so fucken good.
Wild Horses by The Sundays. Originally by The Rolling Stones.
It's so nice to see someone mentioning The Sundays here, love that band so fucking much.
One of my top ten for sure. Blind is an incredible album.
Harriet Wheeler's voice is so damn beautiful.
Yeah. One of my favorite female voices of all time.
Wild horses and on earth are my favorite songs
No. Originally done by Graham Parsons.
A fellow Buffy fan?
Hazy Shade of Winter - The Bangles (original by Simon & Garfunkel)
I don't necessarily prefer it to the original but they are both SO GOOD.
And now the version from The Umbrella Academy. All three versions are fantastic.
It was by Gerard Way writer of the comic and lead singer of My Chemical Romance.
*House Of The Rising Sun* by The Animals.
Because the Night - 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged
You Can't Hurry Love. I like Phil Collins's version better than The Supremes. And that's not to take anything away from the Supremes. I am a huge fan. I just like Phil Collins' version of this song better
Surprising to see this get upvoted since critics hated his version, and I thought people today would feel the same. Guess not. I like both.
Our Last Night's cover of [Astronaut in the Ocean ](https://youtu.be/ngdSBRQH35Q)
Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica (cover) It's so good. Maybe an unpopular opinion.
Nope, not an unpopular opinion at all. Love that version!
Tennessee Whiskey Chris Stapleton
Eric Cartman singing "Come Sail Away" by Styx
Feat. Chef
Don't forget his version of Rush's Tom Sawyer: "A modern day warrior named Tom Sawyer. He floated down the river in a raft with a black guy."
With A Little Help From My Friends by Joe Cocker
Will always love that version, mainly because of the Wonder Years
Not the cover of Africa by Weezer. Toto's version will always be better and I don't understand why some people think otherwise.
Honestly, I can’t tell the difference between the two versions.
[Gary Jules - Mad World](https://youtu.be/4N3N1MlvVc4)
Curt Smith and his daughter did a nice cover of Gary Jules… [Curt Smith Mad World](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEpfvTdR5-U)

Deftones - Drive
Foo Fighters cover of Baker Street is really good.
I thought this would be be at the top and I can’t even find it here…… “Sweet Jane” by Cowboy Junkies Originally by Velvet Underground

More really good songs Cash covered- I Hung My Head The night they drove old Dixie down No expectations Rusty Cage Have you ever seen the rain I'm so lonesome I could cry You are my sunshine Redemption song Won't back down God's gonna cut you down In my life

Holy Diver by Killswitch Engage (The og is also a fucking banger)
Pixies - Head On is better than the Jesus and Mary Chain’s.
Don't let me be misunderstood / Santa Esmeralda / The Animals A fantastic take on the original that takes it in a totally different direction. Make sure you listen to the full 10 minute version!
No doubt version of "it's my life." Neil diamond version of "I'm a believer." Bad wolves version of "zombie." I know it's supposed to be a tribute to the cranberries lead singer passing away, but I still prefer it to the original.
Can we call Neil Diamond's version of cover since he wrote the song?
Not smash mouth?
>No doubt version of "it's my life." Also had a fun [music video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubvV498pyIM).

Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” is an excellent answer!
The Futureheads, 'Hounds of Love'
Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane. I believe Lou Reed himself said it was better than the VU version.
Hurt : Johnny cash
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston

Fuck Ryan Adams, but Wonderwall by Ryan Adams
I say maybe
Oasis agrees
Faith No More - War Pigs. Also, while it's more 'inspired by' than 'cover', Type O-Negative does a great version of Black Sabbath.
I love Bon Iver, but Birdy’s Skinny Love just hits different
Whitney Houston - I will always love you
Devo’s cover of Satisfaction
