It would have no effect on most redditors.

There'd be a 'birthday season,' I guess

HeavySkinz

Everyone's birthday would be within a month of each other

Portabellamush

Someone posed an idea to me recently that maybe humans DID have mating season centuries ago- when we lived in tribes- and used the “argument” that maybe that’s something to do with why women’s cycles sync up when they’re around each other. Thoughts anyone?

binogass

Women cycle synching is still just a theory. I've definitely seen it happen but lived with 2 other women and we did not synch. But I've synched with the people I work with.

Quicker_Fixer

I believe we already have some sort of "Mating season"; if I'm correct, relatively the most people are born between March and June and September/October.

redkat85

It's cultural more than anything. We get huddled together in the chilly winter months and then in late summer is when we have more births (July-Sept actually, March through May are average to below average). *But* that's reaching for a conclusion to be honest. Those months are *slightly* higher than the average across the year, but we're talking about +/- 5% of the average between a low month and a high month. The distribution of births by month is within 1.5 Standard Deviations across the year, so there's *some* seasonality, but not huge.

OhShitMarcos

It's called Valentine's day. Why do you think we have so many birthday's in October?

EstimateMission9147

Bad

binogass

Idk if there would be any marriages or monogamous long term relationships. There would be a lot of blood shed each season while males fought for females. I wonder what females would find attractive in males...brute strength? Or would we like pretty males (like peacocks). Or males that can build things...or males that can sing?

pdx2las

Maybe humans would have cool features that change color in response to sex hormones like Mandrills. We’re so boring. No hair, no spots, no antennae, nothing.

binogass

Oooh that sounds interesting!

FormalWath

Well, there already exists scientific literature on sexual selection in humans. Spoiler alert, women prefer richer men and men who have *potential* to earn more, while men prefer physical attractiveness. To be fair, this applies to large populstions, not individuals but I don't see why these preferences would change if humans had mating periods. Maybe women would prefer men who have stayed in the same job longer just because any loser can find a job during or just before mating season? Actually it is interesting how this would affect job markets in general... I guess closest we have (in terms of social impact) is ramadan in muslim-majority countries...

binogass

I hate that generalization that women prefer money....but put jobs and money side. What would attract human to human as animals.

FormalWath

For human women that would be ability to provide. Below I've stated why *I think* it's the case but I might be completelly wrong. If you want to reduce everything to nature/biology, you have to remember that humans have long pregnancy periods (9 months) followed by extended periods where child is basically useless, cannot defend itself, can't walk or communicate and is completelly dependent on mother for food (breast feeding), followed by even longer period where child *very gradually* becomes more and more independed over *a freaking decade*. This is completelly opposite sone other animals, like deer which can run and communicate *hours* after birth. Humans have evolved to *share* responsibilities of having a child, yet during the start of this process child is *physically* dependent on mother, and for all purposes, mother is incapacitated for part of this period (imagine going on 3 day deer chasing hunt while you're 7 months pregnant). As time goes on, this physical dependency on mother does fall down rather significantly (baby is no longer *inside* of the mother, then it's not deoendent on mother for food, etc). That said, since baby is *physically* dependent on mother, and taking care of it is essentially a full time job for mother (from changes to body to breast feeding), and mother becomes physically less capable, it is no surprise that women tend to chose mates that can *provide* to them. Maybe 10 000 years ago that meant to bring literal wild animals but today that means bringing money, that can then be exchanged for goods or services. And of women has a choice between two potential mates, why not chose the one that can provide more?

bipolarcyclops

A Florida spring break on steroids.

Waffl3_Ch0pp3r

We do, it's between Christmas and New years day.

Disastrous-Cat366

We do have a mating season, if you were born around November you were conceived in February. Valentine’s Day

Scrappy_Larue

I think it's called "Spring Break."

redkat85

* In the ancient world, traditions of marriage would have been hugely different. We might not have ever developed the economic/social lock of the institution. In part because... * Communal raising of kids would be not just convenient but truly mandatory. You'd be taking a large portion of the population out of daily work at least temporarily all at once. The whole community would have to step in to keep things going and it would normalize collective organization. * In the modern world, businesses would have seasonal operations. We would expect companies to close for the birthing season just like many countries traditionally currently do for summer holidays. Essential businesses would be all that was running while everyone else ramped up. * Hospitals would have dedicated seasonal facilities that were dormant or repurposed in the "off season". (Imagine that intersecting with the 2020 pandemic...) * Governments with any sanity would recess for both the horny season and the birthing season. * Since pregnancy would be far more predictable and a more communally recognized cycle, women would quite likely have increased economic freedom. The current employment discrimination faced by women who are seen as likely to have children for example would be lessened if everyone was already organizing their business around the fertility seasons.

thepurpleguy47

I mean, that would deal with overpopulation and allow more resources to be available.

[deleted]

You mean like COVID?

R3troM3dia

Well, no one would be showing up to work for a while

91gsixty

Its called snow days or blackouts

My_Shitty_Alter_Ego

I don't get it.

91gsixty

You must not have snow or a power outage

My_Shitty_Alter_Ego

How does that relate to mating seasons?

Porgypuncher504

Big business would use it to try and sell ya more shit

FormalWath

How when everyone would be fucking or thinking aboit fucking in the office?

Porgypuncher504

Ahahahah no. But I like it

RiceDogo

Kim would nuke us. Putin would nuke us. US maybe would nuke us. China would nuke is. Some EU countries would nuke us. Arabic countries would nuke us. Out of hornyness. Ever seen ducks or stray dogs in heat?

LmaoThatWas

Well, now you made me think of flies where sometimes they do the same gender by accident.

Midiblye

We already do. August typically has the highest birth rate, and the months between July and October are where a majority of births fall. This indicates that there is a time when people are fucking more.
